In today's episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek, brought to you by LMNT, we are joined by thru-hiking power couple who've hiked more than 11,000 miles together Chris and Sara, known on trail as Endless and QB. “What haven't they hiked?” is a fair question, because it's been a lot, including the AT, the PCT (twice), CDT, CT (twice), Arizona Trail, Manaslu Circuit, Hayduke, Long Trail, Cohos Trail, Loowit Trail, Wonderland Trail, Ruby Crest Trail, Why-wash, (ahl-pah-MY-oh) / Santa Cruz Trek, the GR20, and more, believe it or not. They share the story of how they met, offer tips for making a marriage work both on trail and off, discuss how they befriended Mac from Halfway Anywhere and Viking during their many trail adventures, and explain why rafting the Grand Canyon stands out as the most epic adventure of them all. We wrap the show with news of the asshat who vandalized the Katahdin sign, the triple crown of seafoods, and definitively answer the age old question of window vs. aisle. Your weekly guide to the music biz and how it all works. And goodness me, there's a lot in this week's episode of The Price of Music for our dynamic duo to get stuck into...Listener Richard sent us a great question about music journalism – and Steve has a lot to say when answering: what's changed about music journalism, whether music journalism is still important, where the music print media has gone, and what the future of music writing holds. (Plus - does Steve get paid when his 1991 “Nevermind” NME review is re-printed today?)Stu's Big Number is 75 million – and they are “spam tracks” that Spotify has removed from its service in the last year alone. But what on earth is a spam song anyway? What extra information do artists need to attach to their songs when they upload music? Spotify has new rules around AI music – so what's banned, and what's not banned?TikTok is apparently about to be sold in the US (maybe) – but why is TikTok so important to the music industry? Why are old Billie Eilish and Rihanna songs re-emerging to huge popularity? The Great Record Shop Album Filing Debate rumbles on – where would you file Elton John – “E” or “J”? (Plus: a listener report from the Resident Records shop that started it all…)And in the special post-show lock-in section just for our Patreon Superfans, Steve and Stuart prop themselves at the bar to chat about:More on music journalism: are video creators being ‘encouraged' to do certain reviews? (And in what ways in the past were journalists persuaded to write reviews?)Doing an artist interview in real life versus doing it over ZoomShould online influencers who help songs become successful get a cut of the song's profits?Introducing Slady – the all-women Slade tribute band! (And why did they have to cancel a gig?) Why are people now buying tickets at the very last minute - and why does the economics of ticketing mean artists won't be able to do as many gigs?Do you always turn up early for support bands – and have you ever discover a new favourite band this way?As ever, we welcome your feedback, emails and – in particular – any questions you might have about how the music biz works!Email us: thepriceofmusicpodcast@gmail.comSee you next week!Steve and Stuart======Support The Price of Music on Patreon:https://www.patreon.com/ThePriceofMusicFollow Steve on X - @steve_lamacqFollow Stuart on X - @stuartdredgeFollow The Price of Music on X - @PriceofMusicpodFor sponsorship opportunities, please email - joe@musically.com

Call screening technology is finally getting the upgrade we've all been desperately waiting for. Apple's iOS 26 introduces a revolutionary feature that puts unknown callers into a holding pattern, requiring them to state their business before you decide whether to answer. For those of us bombarded with daily spam calls, this could be the most practical smartphone innovation in years.Meanwhile, the digital safety nets meant to protect our children continue to show alarming gaps. A troubling study reveals that Instagram's teen safety tools are largely failing, with researchers finding that 30 out of 47 protective measures are either substantially ineffective or completely nonexistent. Despite Meta's reassurances about "industry-leading" protections, their platform continues exposing young users to harmful content while seemingly encouraging risky behaviors that attract inappropriate adult attention. This ongoing failure raises serious questions about whether social media companies can ever truly prioritize safety over engagement metrics. On a more positive note, the tech world offers exciting new options for both computing and gaming enthusiasts. The Raspberry Pi 500 Plus delivers impressive computing power with 16GB RAM and dual 4K display outputs for just $200, while the new ROG Xbox Ally handheld aims to bring premium gaming on-the-go—though at the eyebrow-raising price of $999. As we review both options alongside our whiskey tasting of Mickter's exceptional Barrel Strength Rye, we explore the value proposition each offers and whether they're worth your hard-earned money. From practical advice on avoiding increasingly sophisticated scams to insights about malware that's been silently stealing data from U.S. organizations, we're covering the technology developments that directly impact your digital safety. Join us each week as we decode the tech world with straightforward explanations, honest reviews, and perhaps a little whiskey on the side. In today's episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek, we are joined by Spencer “Boiler” Dunn. Boiler, is a self-described “pro-yapper”, improv leader, former employee of Parks Canada, pie enthusiast, and of course, a backpacker. Spencer takes us through his long trail adventures across Canada, including the Bruce Trail, West Coast Trail, North Coast Trail, and Nootka Island Trail—journeys that brought him face-to-face with some incredible wildlife, from bears to whales to the elusive sea wolf. We also dive into his recent hike on the PCT—how he broke the record for pies per mile, the notoriety that earned him on trail, navigating people's perceptions as a plus-sized hiker, how his trek deepened his connection to his queer identity, and, of course, his unapologetic hatred for gear talk (which I make him do). We wrap the show with news on New Zealand's most famous thru-hike getting a whole lot pricier, tackle the age-old question of which liquids we'd want to dispense from our fingers, we do the Triple Crown of tummy aches, and hear a listener's compelling pitch for taking this circus to the Pacific Northwest. In today's episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek brought to you by Topo Athletic, we are joined by Wesley Tils, known on trail as Megaman. Buckle in because oh boy does Megaman have an origin story. After growing up in the Mormon church, leaving the church to become a pro boxer, quitting boxing to give the church another shot and going on a missionary trip as his trial of faith, and ultimately leaving the church for good during this missionary trip, escaping onto the PCT with several church members essentially chasing him in pursuit, Megaman's path to thru-hiking was not exactly conventional. Since hitting the trails, Megaman hasn't stopped hiking, accumulating more than 15,000 miles across 18 long trails in 9 years. We learn about all his adventures, including hikes of the Maah Daah Hey Trail, River to River Trail, his self-made Mexico to Canada Trail called “the fourth crown route, and a goosebump inducing story about an aggressive encounter with a grizzly bear on the CDT. We wrap up the show with our one-minute elevator pitch to convince aliens that humanity deserves to survive, the triple crown of cable channels, share the news of Tara Dower's latest FKT, and deliver a five-minute one-minute gear review of a new free-standing tent from Hyperlite Mountain Gear. In today's episode of Backpacker Radio, presented by The Trek brought to you by LMNT, we're joined by Jeff Oliver, better known on trail and online as IBTAT. In addition to building a large following on YouTube and Instagram, IBTAT will be a familiar voice to long-time Backpacker Radio listeners, as he was part of our first season of Trail Correspondents. We dive into IBTAT's story, including his journey to 12 years of sobriety — going from drinking two fifths of liquor a day to cutting alcohol cold turkey overnight, and the dangerous side effects that followed. We also cover his more than 11,000 miles of trekking over the past seven years, including hikes of the Triple Crown trails, the Scottish National Trail, the C&O Canal Towpath, and Sweden's Kungsleden Trail. Lastly, being a talented photographer and videographer, IBTAT shares expert advice on choosing the right camera and capturing quality photos and video during your hikes. Sassafras, Double Dip and I wrap the show with a call for this year's AT thru-hikers to take the 2025 Appalachian Trail Survey, we opine on what the AT will look like in 2035 (and look back at how it's changed over the past decade), we find the precise point at which a walk becomes a hike, Sass and Katie share how they got started in the Outdoor Industry (providing advice and inspiration for those who want to follow in their tracks), and we do the Triple Crown of cooking tips and hacks. Over the weekend, my Instagram account was hit with thousands of spam followers and over 1,000 spam comments – right as I was gearing up to launch my free Cracking Christmas workshop. In this short solo episode, I share: What actually happened and how Meta responded (spoiler: not well) Why the experience reminded me never to rely too heavily on one channel The importance of owning and nurturing your own audience What I'm doing differently for my launch – and why I'm not changing my big goal If you've ever felt stuck depending on social media, or worried about what happens if things go wrong on a platform you don't control, I think this will resonate. And if you want to feel more confident and in control of your wholesale sales this Q4, join me for my free workshop:

In today's episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek, brought to you by LMNT, we are joined once again by Dan Durston. Dan is the man behind Durston Gear, a backpacking gear brand that has exploded in popularity amongst long-distance backpackers over the last handful of years. Dan gives us the rundown on how his business and life have changed since he was last on the show, when another company was exclusively selling his designs via a third-party manufacturer, including taking a second mortgage out on his house, quitting his job as a biologist, and going all in on slinging packs, tents, and poles to his loyal cult-like following. Dan shares some insights on why he thinks he's developed such a loyal following amongst this community, the struggle of trying to strike a healthy work/life balance, and the challenge of balancing scaling his company while maintaining the hands-on customer service experience his customers have come to expect. Chaunce and I unveil a new segment with Dan- Piranha Pool- where we pitch some of burning backpacking innovations and Dan is forced to invest in either of our ideas on the spot. Sassafras and I wrap the show with the best section hikes on the PCT, we break down our weekend at Cascade Locks for PCT Trail Days, the triple crown of jobs we definitely couldn't do, Sass previews a Trek blog post that angered a lot of the Internet (and why she loved it and agreed with it) and a listener gives us some very important grocery store history. The Paid Search Podcast | A Weekly Podcast About Google Ads and Online Marketing
In this episode, we break down how to spot and stop spam traffic and leads before they drain your budget. We cover the risks of leaving Search Partners and Display Network wide open, including mobile apps, ad farm sites, and suspiciously high CTRs. You'll learn why location targeting should be set to “people in or regularly in your targeted area” and why “interested in” leads to bad traffic, especially with Search Partners. We also dive into shady search terms like competitor names, phone numbers, and support queries that often signal spam. We explain why chasing cheap clicks under $1 CPC can be dangerous, especially with broad match keywords. You'll hear why click fraud tools are not a real solution, and how data exclusion can help when spam waves or tracking issues pop up. Finally, we put all the red flags together to show how Google's recommendations often push you toward clicks, while the smarter move is optimizing for real conversions.Try Opteo for free for 28 days - https://opteo.com/pspChris Schaeffer - http://www.chrisschaeffer.comWatch this episode on YouTube: https://youtu.be/_kJty78-DhgSubmit a Question - https://www.paidsearchpodcast.com
Museums are where we put our best stuff. An item might belong in a museum if it's rare, expensive, irreplaceable, or so ordinary and beloved it becomes extraordinary. A self-portrait by Vincent Van Gogh, a can of SPAM, a Romanian mud hut, a narwhal horn, a discarded red stiletto: They can all be found in a museum somewhere in the world. But exhibitions in museums are more than mere collections of striking items. Museums are vital institutions that take on the tasks of collecting, interpreting, and caring for artifacts so they can be experienced by the general public. The Ancient Greek word mouseion means ‘seat of Muses.' In classical antiquity, a museum was a place for contemplation and philosophical debate. When art moved from the open air, larger-than-life statuary of the Greco-Roman era to more intimate, human-scale paintings and objects, the definition of museum changed, too. It became a place to visit to see art — and anything placed in a museum became art. In this episode, we romp through the delightful hoarding behavior behind Renaissance Wunderkammers, learn about the first museum curator (spoiler: It was a woman!), and celebrate the majesty of the Louvre. Then we recommend books that transported us to museums around the world. Here are the books we recommend on the show: A Little History of Art by Charlotte Mullins A Parisian Cabinet of Curiosities: Deyrolle by Prince Louis Albert de Broglie Cabinets of Curiosities by Patrick Mauriès How to Enjoy Art by Ben Street Metropolitan Stories by Christine Coulson The Last Painting of Sara de Vos by Dominic Smith For more on the books we recommend, plus the other cool stuff we talk about, visit show notes at http://strongsenseofplace.com/podcasts/2022-07-18-museums Do you enjoy our show? In today's episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek brought to you by Topo Athletic, we are chatting all things Wonderland Trail. The Trek's very own Jess Stone is fresh off her thru-hike of this near-100 mile lap around Mt. Rainier in Washington, and gives us a detailed breakdown of her journey and the trail at large. We cover the ideal number of days to do this hike, the standout campsites, wildlife, the permitting process, and the best games to play on trail with your hiking buddies to pass the time such as eating rocks. We wrap the show with a couple of new opportunities to get involved with The Trek, why Nova Scotia has banned all hiking for the foreseeable future, ranking a series of different hiking conditions (or- why postholing is the worst), the triple crown of gear deal breakers, we get even more input on the very controversial decision to use dry ice for resupplies, and a listener reminds us that not all owl encounters are all that interesting.
