Caroline Crampton was born on the Thames Estuary to parents who had sailed there from South Africa in the early 1980s. Having grown up with seafaring legs and a desire to explore, Caroline is both a knowledgeable guide to the most hidden-away parts of this overlooked and unfashionable part of the country, and a persuasive advocate for its significance, both historically and culturally. As one of the key entrances and exits to England, the estuary has been pivotal to London's economic fortunes and in defining its place in the world. It has also been the entry point for immigrants for generations, yet it has an ambivalent relationship with newcomers, and UKIP's popularity in the area is on the rise. As Caroline navigates the waters of the estuary, she also seeks out its stories: empty warehouses and arsenals; the Thames barrier, which guards the safety of Londoners more precariously than we might; ship wrecks still inhabited by the ghosts of the drowned; vast Victorian pumping stations which continue to carry away the capital's sewage; the river banks, layered with archaeological Anglo-Saxon treasures; literature inspired by its landscape; beacons used for centuries to guide boats through the dark and murky waterways of the estuary; the eerie Maunsell army forts - 24 metre high towers of concrete and steel which were built on concealed sandbanks at the far reaches of the estuary during the Second World War and designed to spot (and shoot) at incoming enemy planes; and the estuary's wildlife and shifting tidal moods. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/pbliving/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/pbliving/support

BRINK OF GREATNESS

Caroline was not the first person to find herself in a good job with all the security, money and niceties that a good corporate job provides. She was also not the first person feeling unfulfilled in that role; a burning sense that something was missing in her life. The difference is⏤Caroline Boudreaux acted on that feeling. She decided that 'money would not be the main ingredient that would make her world go round'. "I always thought if I made more and more money that I’d be happier, but it worked the opposite, the more money that I made, the more confused I became", expressed Caroline, "I had everything that money could buy, but I wasn’t happy". And with that, Caroline and her best friend Kris decided to quit their corporate jobs and take a trip around the world for one year.  It was a trip that would change her life forever. She walked into an orphanage in India that as she describes "felt like a concentration camp." "I was totally unprepared to meet 110 filthy, bald and hungry children. We called them Velcro babies because you’d sit down and have ten kids on you and then stand up and still have 10 kids on you. I saw this little baby girl. I could tell she wanted my attention. This little infant was only 18 months old. I picked her up. Like with all of them, they would push their bodies into you. I rocked her asleep and sang her a lullaby in honor of my mother and she fell asleep in my arms. When I went to put her in her room, I walked her into her room and noticed her bed was a piece of wood on the ground. The minute that I laid that starving baby on the wooden bed, I thought, somebody better help these children." It was at that moment that Caroline Boudreaux recognized her life would never be the same again ,"I knew it had to be me. I knew it was my responsibility". The story continues on the Brink of Greatness Podcast… The Next Leap Forward Miracle Foundation was founded by Caroline Boudreaux on Mother's Day in 2000. It's a non-profit organization that brings life-changing care to orphaned and vulnerable children from around the world. Caroline has a big goal⏤to eradicate orphanages by insuring every child has a loving family to call their own by 2040. As Caroline explains⏤"Today, there are 8 million children living in orphanages around the world and almost 500,000 children in the United States foster care system. None of them want to be there. Ask any child and they will tell you that their biggest dream is to be part of a loving family — it’s where they thrive. With global awareness, collaboration and your help, our goal of a safe, loving family for every child is fully achievable by 2040." Too often, women feel a sense of competition with other women and tear each other down instead of supporting each other. Today I have the pleasure of interviewing my dear friend, and a genuine inspiration to me and countless others, Caroline Adams Miller, an expert in, among other things, utilizing positive psychology research to help people find success, and how we as women can support and uplift each other. When Caroline was young she struggled with competition with other women. Her awareness of unhealthy competition among women continued over the years, and as she spoke with more and more women, she learned that every women seems to have had experiences of other women tearing them down or engaging in forms of unhealthy competitiveness with them. There are many reasons why women engage in this unhealthy competition with each other. For some, it's driven by jealousy. For others it's scarcity theory, the fear that there's only “one seat at the table,” or that there isn't enough success to go around. For others it might have a cause rooted in evolutionary biology. And for others, watching another woman go after her dreams in a big way triggers FOMO, a Fear Of Missing Out. Caroline shares research that says that 84% of women confess to being surrounded by “frenemies,” friends who are really enemies, and women often keep these people around out of fear of standing out and standing up for themselves. But keeping them in your life is a huge danger, because they bring you down and make it much more likely that you'll give up on going after your dreams. Research by Shelly Gable at UCLA on Active Constructive Responding teaches us that the way people around us respond to us greatly increases the chances that we'll abandon our goals or interpret our progress as negative. We need to be much more selective and intentional about who we allow into our “inner circle.” The people who are “in” should be the people who are enthusiastic about our dreams, our goals, and our ideas. We also discuss Adam Grant's book, Give and Take, and what we can learn from it about giving to others, and the concept of “relational grit,” which Caroline and Lee Waters, the current president of the International Positive Psychology Association, have come up with. Caroline and I are both huge supporters of dialogue with other like-minded women, participation in masterminds to uplift each other and support each other's efforts towards goals, and we talk about the importance of developing these support systems. As Caroline learned more about this issue she eventually came to the point where she decided that talking about it wasn't enough; she needed to DO something about it! So she came up with a multi-pronged approach drawing on Shelly Gable's research on Active Construcive Responding and on Peter Gollwitzer's work on implementation intentions (which involves creating if-then scenarios to prompt you to do things that are difficult for you). Caroline has created a simple way for women to uplift other women, which she calls Share 2 To 2. Every week, Caroline shares the successes of two women, each on two different social media platforms, and she uses the hashtag, #Share222. She often doesn't know the women she uplifts personally; she finds them on LinkedIn, or on some other platform, and shares their successes with others. She firmly believes that by uplifting other women and highlighting their successes, there will be more women at the table in positions of authority, and there will be less of an effect of scarcity theory, less fear from some women of other women succeeding, and it will be a positive spiral. I end with a few Purpose Power Tips, including learning about Active Constructive Responding, using the hastag #Share222, and “I'll have what she's having!” Click here to learn more about the summit in Melbourne, Australia, in July 2019, in which Caroline will be participating with the founder of Appreciative Inquiry as they explore, using the tools of positive psychology, how women can uplift and inspire other women in the best possible ways. As a girl, Caroline Dean would watch the cherry trees in her childhood garden unfurl their pink and white blossom and wonder how it was that they all flowered at exactly the same time. She tells Jim Al-Khalili that the flowering synchronicity she observed was to spark a life-long fascination with the timing mechanisms of plant reproduction, in particular with a process called vernalisation - how plants respond to extreme cold. Professor Dame Caroline Dean of the John Innes Centre in Norwich has focussed right down to the molecular level, homing in on the individual cells and genes that flip the flowering switch. For thirty years running her own lab Caroline has been asking (and answering) questions like why some plants need a period of cold before they can flower the following Spring, how plants know that the cold winter is really over and it's safe to flower and, when winter is so different around the globe, how do plants adapt? Her team focused in on one gene - with the snappy title of Flowering Locus C or FLC - and by delving into the world of epigenetic regulation, they uncovered the processes by which this gene was slowly turned off over winter, enabling the plant to flower the following spring. These ground-breaking discoveries have profound implications for human health and for food security. As Caroline tells Jim, the cellular memory system behind a plant gene flicked to the "off" position, is very similar to the switching and expression of genes that cause diseases like cancer in the human body. And as the climate warms and fluctuating temperatures affect our seasons, her work will deepen understanding of the molecular basis for flowering times - vital for farmers and plant breeders to adapt and protect our food supply. Write those reasons down. Let them out of your system. Stare them down, give them a good look. Notice if they’re really aligned with reality. 195: How to Make Your Dream Come True: 5 "Bills" to Expect

~The Simple Sophisticate, episode #195 ~Subscribe to The Simple Sophisticate: iTunes | Stitcher | iHeartRadio | YouTube The 43rd time was the charm. At least in the case for currently number one ranked women's tennis player Caroline Wozniacki. Winning her first grand slam title with the Austrialian Open at the end of this past January, Wozniacki, after 43 entries at grand slam events, earned her first in 2018 after 12 years on the tour. As Caroline's and many other successful dreamers have demonstrated upon finally reaching the summit they had in their sights from the beginning, it takes time. Often more time than one expected upon stepping forward toward their dream, but it is possible. The mindset that a worthwhile dream will be easy is often understood, but what isn't initially understood is what you will have to "pay" so to speak to attain your goal. Much like upkeep on a house, in order to accrue interest, in order to increase the value of your investment, time must pass. As we look at the real estate market today, some will not have to wait long in certain parts of the country while others wait decades to see a worthwhile increase should they wish to sell for a pretty profit. Along the way of living in our homes, there are certain bills that we expect to pay and some we do not. We expect to pay utilities, we expect to pay for upkeep of the roof, siding, etc., but we don't anticipate disasters such as broken boilers or a tree after being struck by lightening sliding down the side of your home and requiring a tree service to remove promptly from the street (the latter examples were both experienced at my last owned home and the tree service was my father). Each of these incidents, expected or not, are bills that must be paid if we want to maintain our home, if we want to someday be able to sell it and receive a return on our investment. Dreamers who set lofty goals are not to be laughed at because what they are choosing to do is courageous as it will require great tenacity, perseverance and willpower paired with clarity of vision. As you will see below, there will be some "bills" that must be paid along the way that most likely were expected by the dreamer, but there will be some that cannot be predicted until we set about on our journey. However, hopefully today's list of "bills" to expect will ease your mind as you run up against each one, reassuring you that such occurrences are not a sign to stop or give up, but rather par for the course. Your dream is waiting to be materialized and now you will know what to be prepared for. 1. The errant belief that it's not possible and the courage to dismiss said belief Support along our journey toward our dream is vital; however, the catch is that because you are pursuing something that many people have not acquired, you may not have as much support as you would expect. Fear not. The first foundational form of support begins with you. So long as you have an unwavering determination and belief in what you are pursuing, that will reveal to the supporters that do stand by your side to stand tall with you. The supporters that stand with you need not be people who entirely understand what or why you are traversing towards; however, if they know you well, they are confident in your abilities. In other words, it is the quality of support you surround yourself, not a vast amount of supporters. Once you are clear as to why you are pursuing what you have set out to attain, the clarity will be the roots for courage to blossom when unknowns and confusing moments arise. 2. Stepping forward without seeing the tangible outcome No one can predict the future, even people who are following a prescribed plan of their life based on what society, their family or their community has modeled for them. No one can know for certain what lays ahead for any one of us, but we can put the odds in our favor. We can investigate individuals who have while maybe not having pursued the exact path we are choosing to walk along, have, for example, chosen the entrepreneurial path. We can look to them for the obstacles they maneuvered around and outcomes they attained. Different times combined with different people and talents will render a different outcome each time, but you are the constant. And when you know with clarity where and why you are choosing your path, the outcome doesn't have to be readily visible, but your confidence to step forward does need to be present. 3. Running into obstacles They will happen. Guaranteed. But as I shared in my conversation on Afternoon Live last week with regards to sticking to your New Year's resolutions, often the universe is double-checking to make sure you indeed want what you say you want. Be sure to have a look at that particular segment to hear more about this inevitable moment. 4. Evolution of your mind and habits Last week I took a moment to contemplate what my life was like 10 years ago, and I immediately recognized that I could not have predicted in ANY way where I am today and what I am doing. It was only 9 years ago that I began the blog, but 10 years ago if you would have told me I would have not only a blog, a podcast, a vodcast and working on my second book while officially setting up my business as a corporation, I would have been perplexed (in other words, I might have said "what's a vodcast?"). This truth, this "bill" is an exciting bill to pay because it is growth. It is each of us stepping into our full potential and sharing with the world what we uniquely have to offer. We do not often know what it is the world needs and what precisely we can give when we begin, but we figure it out along the way and we figure out the growth we would like to undergo as well in order to achieve what we see as necessary and possible. 5. A trust in your vision that is unwavering I was recently listening to the second season of the podcast "Making . . . " on WBEZ Chicago (their first season focused on Oprah). Focusing on Obama and his years leading up to the Presidency, the first episode dives into his time as a community organizer and why he chose from that experience to pursue public service. His decision was predicated on the reality that in order to help the people in the African American communities of Chicago and around the country, they needed a voice. From the time in 1984 (he graduated from Columbia University in 1983) upon taking the organizer's job (which paid $12K/year) through this three year time period, his purpose never waivered, he just realized he had to change the methods to making the change plausible. You too will adjust as you make your way toward your dream. You will come to realize that the initial approach you began with is no longer serving the purpose you had hoped it would, and so you will tweak your method. So long as you trust your vision, how you change it won't matter or that you changed it, what will matter is that you remained laser focused on why you are making the changes. The word "bills" is not one we enjoy seeing unless we are the ones being paid, but the truth is that whether we pay with our time, our tenacity, or our money, when we invest wisely with clarity of purpose, the dream will be realized in its own time. Hang in there and you too, like Caroline Wozniacki will find yourself in disbelief, but at the same time reassured, that your journey, your effort and your sincere desire was right on track and on time. ~SIMILAR POSTS FROM THE ARCHIVES YOU MIGHT ENJOY: ~Give Yourself Permission to Be Awkward, episode #185 ~The Benefits of Having a Mission Statement & How to Create Your Own, episode #173 ~How to Build a Life for Ladybugs: Choosing Hope Over Fear, episode #154   Petit Plaisir ~The Love Gap: A Radical Plan to Win in Life and Love by Jenna Birch ~Look for her be a guest on this podcast, Monday March 5th, episode #198 ~Read many of Jenna Birch's articles and columns here ~Check out Jenna's website     Sponsor of this week’s episode: Lifesum ~Visit the Top Ranked Health & Fitness app and receive 30% off the Premium Membership. ~Visit lifesum.com/simple       Images of Caroline Wozniacki via The Australian and Steve G Tennis; Jenna Birch author pic via JennaBirch.com

When faced with a storm the key is to stay calm and get prepared for whatever it might bring. Sometimes dealing with the system and fighting for your child with additional needs is like sailing into a storm. This week Caroline, in part 2 of her interview, talks about her experiences of staying calm and getting prepared. Caroline starts off by reminding us that parenting is already hard without having the extra challenges that having a child with additional needs brings. As Caroline says, as new parents we are often left to cope until a professional decides that they know better and suddenly we end up being sidelined. It is then that we need to stay calm even if our most natural responses might be anger or frustration. She explains her own experiences and how she learnt the key skill of not saying what she really thought. Caroline advocates becoming an expert yourself to help you deal with the experts who are sometimes deciding your child’s future. Research is key, in her opinion, so you become aware of what options are out there, even what new thinking is happening that could change the direction of your child’s life. Some of the professionals you deal with will welcome your knowledge and input and see it as a way to make their job easier. Others, and they will be a minority, will not be so welcoming of your input but at the very least they will be aware that you are ready and willing to equip yourself with whatever is needed to get the best for your child. We finish the interview by coming back to Caroline’s son James and what his future might hold. Caroline shares his thoughts on future careers and as she says some might need a little more thought and others will rely on some technological advances. But the world is changing, and with that more options open up that we could never have imagined. Caroline’s experiences of her journey with her son are unique to her and her family but there will be similarities with your journey in there. Sharing our unique stories helps everyone because even if the road taken is different our destinations are all the same – our children maximizing their own unique talents. Paul and Caroline Daley review TV - Disenchantment | The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel | This Is US | The Orville | Handmaid's Tale |

Spoiler warnings: I reference Battlestar Galactica and 12 Monkeys in this episode and give away some pretty awesome plot points as ways of drawing parallels between this episode and those other shows. Look out! Potential bird-themed resistance leaders of the LA bloc take note: the Cardinal followed Quayle into great beyond this week. Even with Total Rendition now in the near future, you were probably looking at a short tenure anyway. As Caroline points out in the podcast, this episode featured a lot of meetings. Alcala meeting Nolan. Helena meeting Alcala. Snyder meeting Nolan. Snyder meeting Maddie. Helena meeting Snyder. Brobow meeting Karen. Whew. So many meetings! No wonder the Brobow crew had to go freaking postal at the end of the episode! A special recognition award in the field of sliminess should be given to Nolan for the timing he allowed the Red Hats to apprehend Maddie. He gave a new meaning to "one for the road" with his celebration of kicking Hudson out of the house (what else could he have been so excited about?). Overall, for an episode meant to get people moved into certain positions and dominoes about to fall, it was very satisfying thanks to the big action piece at the end.
