Welcome to the What's Next! Podcast with Tiffani Bova. I have the honor and pleasure of welcoming Caroline Adams Miller to the show today. For over three decades, Caroline has been a pioneer with her groundbreaking work in the science of goal setting, grit, happiness, and success. She is recognized as one of the world's leading optimistic psychology experts. She is the author of nine books but we're here to discuss her most recent book, Big Goals. THIS EPISODE IS PERFECT FOR… anyone who wants to set bigger, more meaningful goals and follow through with success. TODAY'S MAIN MESSAGE… most people approach goal setting the wrong way—relying on outdated methods, setting goals that are too small, or giving up too soon. Caroline Adams Miller shares why the science of goal setting is crucial for success and proposes new strategies to push past mediocrity and create a more fulfilling life. KEY TAKEAWAYS: Meaningful goals should challenge you and push you outside your comfort zone. The best goals align with what you won't regret pursuing later in life. Learning goals require patience and time, while performance goals demand high standards of excellence. Who you surround yourself with can determine your success—seek out supporters, not frenemies. Goal-setting isn't about quick wins; it's about creating long-term strategies for success. WHAT I LOVE MOST…Caroline's insight that true goal setting isn't just about ambition—it's about meaning. The goals that truly change our lives are the ones that challenge us, push us forward, and align with what we'll be proud of in the long run. Do you have a dream that feels just slightly out of reach; just a little too impossible? Well, today is for you because it's all about setting big goals and finding the right pathways to achieving them. We begin with the definition of “big goals” before exploring why it's vital for human growth and development to always shoot for the stars. Then, we unpack Caroline Adams Miller's summation of Dr. Edwin A. Locke's Goal Setting Theory as found in her latest book, Big Goals, why you need to be surrounded by people who support you while also holding yourself accountable, how to build the necessary grit and resilience to help you persevere, and the undeniable power of consistency. We end by examining the motivations behind your goals and the importance of understanding your “why”, and it's always helpful to remember the people in your life who may be affected by your actions and decisions.
As the clock winds down for another year, now is the perfect time to think about what you hope to achieve in 2025. But are the goals we set for ourselves big enough and perhaps more importantly, are they the right goals? Today we pose these questions to the eight-time bestselling author, international speaker, and world-renowned expert in positive psychology, Caroline Adams Miller. Caroline's work is focused on setting big goals for yourself and finding the grit and determination to achieve them, and she begins today's conversation by sharing details of her latest book, Big Goals – a manual that reveals the science behind the power of Dr. Edwin A. Locke's Goal Setting Theory. Caroline defines “big goals” and how they differ from others before explaining how setting big goals can change a person for the better. We discuss the modern trend of trying to eliminate all stress from our lives and how that has bred a timid generation, helpful tips and tools from the world of applied positive psychology, how learning goals and performance goals manifest in real life, and the roles of happiness and accountability in achieving everything you set out to do. We end with the reminder that hard work often leads to satisfaction and that through healthy competition, we are able to develop resilience, determination, and grit.

I went to the library recently and checked out so many books on self-help and self-improvement. It's really dawning on me that, in just a few days' time, I'll have a new name and, while I'll always be the same person, I am looking at it as a fresh start of sorts. One of the books I checked out was Caroline Adams Miller's 2009 book Creating Your Best Life: The Ultimate Life List Guide, and I enjoyed it so much that I reached out to her to chat about it. Well, wouldn't you know it, that same month Caroline had a new book coming out — and so today we are talking about both of these books! Caroline's new book is called Big Goals: The Science of Setting Them, Achieving Them, and Creating Your Best Life, which came out November 27. I found Caroline, both in her books and in this conversation, to be a wealth of knowledge. In Caroline's groundbreaking Big Goals, we learn about Goal Setting Theory and about goal setting practices for personal and professional goals that will ensure that we make all of our goals a reality. Caroline spent over 15 years researching this book, and it's packed with data. It connects beautifully with Creating Your Best Life, her 2009 book, which we also speak about today. Caroline is a pioneer in the areas of the science of goal setting, happiness, success, and grit. Creating Your Best Life was the first mass-market book on goal accomplishment that included evidence-based research, and it also connected the science of success with the science of happiness for the first time. It is so popular that it was re-released in 2021. Caroline also wrote many other books, including Getting Grit in 2017, and she is a keynote speaker who has worked with clients like Morgan Stanley, lululemon, Harvard Law School, and many others. Caroline has taught as part of the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton Business School Executive Education program and has also taught in NYU's School of Continuing and Professional Studies and the University of Texas-Dallas School of Management. A graduate of Penn and Harvard, she's been featured in hundreds of magazines, newspapers, and other media outlets, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, BBC, NBC, NPR, and CNN. She's also a top-ranked Masters Swimmer and even has a black belt in martial arts. She's clearly pretty good at this whole goal setting thing. We've got much to learn from her. Today in The Change Lab, I'm joined by my former coach and goal-setting expert, Caroline Adams Miller. Twenty-three years ago, Caroline helped me achieve an impossible goal that changed my life. In our conversation, Caroline breaks down the difference between learning goals and performance goals and why distinguishing one from the other matters; why women need less consolation from their friends and more encouragement to go after hard goals; and how she's approaching her next big goal…writing her forthcoming book, Big Goals, which comes out in the Fall of 2024. As Caroline reminds us, “the happiest people wake up to hard goals.” This episode is a must listen if you have big dreams, but feel stuck without a clear idea of how to realize those goals. If you're tuning into this episode of This Is Woman's Work, I'm guessing it's EITHER because you listened to last week and CAN'T WAIT to hear the rest of this amazing conversation, or you happened to stumble upon our show. If that's the case, I'd like to encourage you to go back to last week's episode, because this is Part 2 of a two-part episode on the patterns, approaches, and ways that women ARE NOT supporting women. And let me tell you, this conversation goes down as one of my all time favorites in the 3.5 years I've been hosting this show. Caroline Adams Miller brings a scientific, research-backed, and data led approach to the important topics we're covering. The time has come for ampliship - let's SHARE the stories of women doing amazing things. Collaborate with other women to promote and recognize each other. GO PUBLIC with your support. Make sure there are witnesses as you promote them, reference their work, and celebrate their successes. Become a MASTER of supporting other women. Let's make ampliship both the word and the action of the year. That is WOMAN'S work. I often challenge men to be open, curious, to truly LISTEN, to not be so defensive… and now it's our turn. Friends, buckle up, because we're going full throttle on the bullshit that WOMEN do. The second I met Caroline Adams Miller, I just KNEW she needed to be our guest for this conversation. Caroline is a well-respected expert, whose scientific approach to change fosters lasting success in organizations and individuals. She has a Masters of Applied Positive Psychology from the University of Pennsylvania and graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University. The author of eight books, including Getting Grit, Creating Your Best Life, and My Name is Caroline, Caroline's work has been featured worldwide and she's here today to help me, not just to have the discussion, but to provide that scientific, research-backed data so we're not just talking “in theory” about the things that aren't working for us, but providing concrete evidence of it. Are you just a grown up Mean Girl? Are you going silent on the women in your life? What might you be doing that's comfortable and convenient for you, but isn't in support of other women? It's time for us to be open and curious. It's time for us to check ourselves. And, because this conversation is so good and so necessary, we've made it a two-part episode. Meet us here next week for Part 2 of this conversation. Got grit? According to the guest in this episode of the CUES Podcast, getting grit is about having passion and perseverance in pursuit of long-term goals. It's about going outside of your comfort zone and taking risks to live your best life. As a bonus, the process of getting grit will likely inspire other people to want to behave that way as well. “Grit is really defined also by the fact that these are your goals, your unique goals that you want to accomplish,” explains Caroline Adams Miller, author of the books Getting Grit and Creating Your Best Life. “And why is that? Because it's this passion, this inner passion that keeps you going when the going gets tough. And if it's someone else's goal, you're not going to have that. So it has to be your why not someone else's why. “People have what I call authentic grit simply by virtue of how they live and how they do hard things,” continues Miller, who will present a keynote about grit at Directors Conference, slated for Dec. 4-7 in Las Vegas. On the other hand, it's a good idea to try to avoid having what Miller dubs “stupid” grit. “Stupid grit is marked by arrogance and a lack of humility,” Miller explains in the show. “Stupid grit is when conditions have changed and you refuse to take in information or data from the environment or other people that would caution you to change course or think a little bit differently about how to behave.” Fortunately, authentic grit is contagious. Miller tells in the show about how West Point roomed cadets with somewhat lower grit scores with cadets with higher grit scores. Over time, the overall grit scores went up. It's a great idea to embed people with the qualities of authentic grit “into your organization, on your team, in your school environment, in your family because we know that simply observing and being around it .. has that effect of elevating and uplifting other people's behaviors,” she says. What makes one person persevere through challenges, while another succumbs to them? The character trait of grit is only partially inherent; people can develop the grit they need to flourish in difficulties with the right mindset. In this episode, hosts Kelly Palace and Maria Parker speak with best-selling author about her latest book GETTING GRIT and how we can get grittier. You’ll love to hear great advice from Caroline Adams Miller, who is one of the world’s leading experts on the science behind successful goal setting and the use of "good grit" to achieve hard things. For more than 30 years, she’s been sharing her research-backed, actionable strategies to help people cultivate more grit and dig deeper to clarify and achieve their toughest goals. Caroline breaks down the idea of grit into several types: Good grit: This is the type of grit that is authentic, and that awes or inspires others. Bad grit: Also referred to as "stupid" or "stubborn" grit, this type happens when the individual pursues personal goals at all costs. Selfie grit: The need to tell everyone about the difficult things the individual is accomplishing. Faux grit: People who want the recognition of doing accomplishment without actually doing the hard work. Hear Caroline speak in person at the upcoming event: Creating Your Best Life -- How to Pursue Meaningful Goals and Live with No Regrets on April 26 to 29 at the Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health in Stockton, Massachusetts. Because people with grit don’t go for easy, low-hanging fruit and have to work persistently for a long time to see success, their pursuit of tough goals, and often their success in achieving them, is what inspires other people to step out of their comfort zone, too." - Caroline Adams Miller Subscribe to the Champion's Mojo podcast on iTunes, Spotify and Google Play. Too often, women feel a sense of competition with other women and tear each other down instead of supporting each other. Today I have the pleasure of interviewing my dear friend, and a genuine inspiration to me and countless others, Caroline Adams Miller, an expert in, among other things, utilizing positive psychology research to help people find success, and how we as women can support and uplift each other. When Caroline was young she struggled with competition with other women. Her awareness of unhealthy competition among women continued over the years, and as she spoke with more and more women, she learned that every women seems to have had experiences of other women tearing them down or engaging in forms of unhealthy competitiveness with them. There are many reasons why women engage in this unhealthy competition with each other. For some, it's driven by jealousy. For others it's scarcity theory, the fear that there's only “one seat at the table,” or that there isn't enough success to go around. For others it might have a cause rooted in evolutionary biology. And for others, watching another woman go after her dreams in a big way triggers FOMO, a Fear Of Missing Out. Caroline shares research that says that 84% of women confess to being surrounded by “frenemies,” friends who are really enemies, and women often keep these people around out of fear of standing out and standing up for themselves. But keeping them in your life is a huge danger, because they bring you down and make it much more likely that you'll give up on going after your dreams. Research by Shelly Gable at UCLA on Active Constructive Responding teaches us that the way people around us respond to us greatly increases the chances that we'll abandon our goals or interpret our progress as negative. We need to be much more selective and intentional about who we allow into our “inner circle.” The people who are “in” should be the people who are enthusiastic about our dreams, our goals, and our ideas. We also discuss Adam Grant's book, Give and Take, and what we can learn from it about giving to others, and the concept of “relational grit,” which Caroline and Lee Waters, the current president of the International Positive Psychology Association, have come up with. Caroline and I are both huge supporters of dialogue with other like-minded women, participation in masterminds to uplift each other and support each other's efforts towards goals, and we talk about the importance of developing these support systems. As Caroline learned more about this issue she eventually came to the point where she decided that talking about it wasn't enough; she needed to DO something about it! So she came up with a multi-pronged approach drawing on Shelly Gable's research on Active Construcive Responding and on Peter Gollwitzer's work on implementation intentions (which involves creating if-then scenarios to prompt you to do things that are difficult for you). Caroline has created a simple way for women to uplift other women, which she calls Share 2 To 2. Every week, Caroline shares the successes of two women, each on two different social media platforms, and she uses the hashtag, #Share222. She often doesn't know the women she uplifts personally; she finds them on LinkedIn, or on some other platform, and shares their successes with others. She firmly believes that by uplifting other women and highlighting their successes, there will be more women at the table in positions of authority, and there will be less of an effect of scarcity theory, less fear from some women of other women succeeding, and it will be a positive spiral. I end with a few Purpose Power Tips, including learning about Active Constructive Responding, using the hastag #Share222, and “I'll have what she's having!” Click here to learn more about the summit in Melbourne, Australia, in July 2019, in which Caroline will be participating with the founder of Appreciative Inquiry as they explore, using the tools of positive psychology, how women can uplift and inspire other women in the best possible ways. To learn more about Shelly Gable's work on Active Constructive Responding, here's an article summarizing it, and here's her original research. The most fulfilled innovators and influencers who lead lives of mastery and meaning—at some point get cracked open by wonder, get cracked open to a purpose greater than themselves. Today, Jeffrey reflects on Season 1 of Tracking Wonder, looking back at his conversations with leaders, change-makers, artists and creatives to identify the wonder switch in each of their stories, those moments when they were opened up to a greater-than-you purpose that drives the work they do today. Jeffrey begins with Susan Piver’s experience of being cracked open in love after a serious car accident by way of a surprising connection with another person. He reminds us of Caroline Adams Miller’s inspiration—people with the grit to do extraordinary things in their ordinary lives. Jeffrey speaks to the challenge of ‘standing in love’ with your big idea, revisiting Jonathan Fields and Dorie Clarke’s discussion around the need for authentic community. He also covers the concept of conscious leadership, reflecting on Mike Erwin and Todd Henry’s respective takes on sourcing bravery from within and leading with a mindset of service. Listen in as Jeffrey highlights Marty Neumeier’s theory on doing the ‘right thing’ that leads us to beauty, cohesiveness and order and learn why wonder is the key to unlocking our compassion—and ultimately making decisions with an eye to the future. Key Takeaways [7:50] Susan Piver’s experience being cracked open in love Boyfriend served as lifeline after serious car accident ‘Surprised to have someone reach through haze—and reach back’ [11:50] The kind of grit that inspires Caroline Adams Miller Uplifted by people doing extraordinary things in ordinary lives Awed by those who do what’s necessary without fuss, fanfare [15:48] The challenge of ‘standing in love’ with your big idea Requires deep drive to survive challenges Impact assumes different forms [18:36] Why the world needs brands to build authentic community Sense of belonging impacts cognitive ability, health Movements bring people together around shared set of values [23:30] The concept of conscious leadership Bravery comes from within Lead with mindset of service, elevate people around you [27:06] Why we have an ethical responsibility to lead with our ideals Short-term, selfish good vs. long-term, broadly beneficial good Make choices that further human evolution to beauty, coherence and order [38:30] The role of wonder in evoking empathy and compassion for others Need each other’s perspectives to open heart Look beyond cubicle-sized view to impact on future Resources The Heart of Altruism by Kristen Monroe ‘Blessing the Boats’ by Lucille Clifton The Art of Loving by Erich Fromm Getting Grit: The Evidence-Based Approach to Cultivating Passion, Perseverance, and Purpose by Caroline Adams Miller Stand Out: How to Find Your Breakthrough Idea and Build a Following Around It by Dorie Clark Good Life Project The Positivity Project Accidental Creative Herding Tigers: Be the Leader That Creative People Need by Todd Henry Liquid Agency Upheavals of Thought: The Intelligence of Emotions by Martha C. Jeffrey’s Premise: “The people who lead lives of meaning and mastery let a force of character - a young genius - guide them as they pursue their most meaningful work and ideas.” ‘You are seven years old.’ What if we approached each day with a childlike mindset? Would it cultivate original thinking? Recapture a spirit of play and exploration? Bring us back to our young genius—the unique force of character we were born with? We have reached the halfway point of Season 1, and Jeffrey is stopping to reflect on the idea of ‘retrieving childhood at will’ and aligning our current work with the young genius of our seven-year-old selves: Is there a correlation between paying attention to this unique force of character and our own capacity to lead a life of meaning, if not mastery? Today, Jeffrey introduces us to the concept of a ‘genius force,’ explaining why the most influential and fulfilled people allow their young genius to lead them. He looks back at Charlie Gilkey and Pam Slim’s stories of their own young genius and how their childhood memories of channeling MacGyver and burying marbles inform their current work. We consider the idea of ‘primal uniqueness’ as a seed seeking nourishment and explore how our genius force might still thrive—even in a hostile environment. Jeffrey reminds us of Caroline Adams Miller and Ishita Gupta’s challenging childhood experiences as well as Srini Pillay’s curiosity for the forbidden and Alex Soojung-Kim Pang’s detour from cultural expectations. Listen in for insight around remembering your own young genius and finding work that allows that genius to flourish. Key Takeaways [1:26] The concept of a genius force Leads to creative fulfillment Most influential use as guide [4:33] The invitation to remember being a seven-year-old Produced more original responses in NDSU study Recaptures spirit of play, exploration [8:57] Charlie Gilkey’s ‘MacGyver’ young genius Creative with limited resources as child Became profoundly resourceful consultant [10:17] Pam Slim’s genius as a brilliant connector Elaborate fantasies in childhood (planting marbles, reading …Narnia) Feeling of magic, adventure and story in current work [12:08] Robert Greene’s idea of primal uniqueness All born with seed that wants to be nourished Express uniqueness through work to heighten chance of mastery [13:05] Caroline Adams Miller’s challenging childhood Lack of love from biological family Found happy, safe place at school [15:12] Ishita Gupta’s precocious childhood Middle class family, told what to do Curiosity, questions got into trouble [18:07] Srini Pillay’s experience growing up in apartheid Curiosity for forbidden Genius rose above environment [20:33] Alex Soojung-Kim Pang’s rebellion from expectation Expected to attend Ivy League school, become doctor/lawyer Found intellectual satisfaction in consulting, think tanks Talent for making technical knowledge useful [25:31] The challenge of remembering your young genius Georgia O’Keeffe encouraged to pursue talent at UVA Others reflect genius back to us, including children [31:13] The young genius’ role in questioning the status quo ‘Is this a dream or real life? Jeffrey's premise: "One factor that helps high-achieving creatives and fulfilled entrepreneurs face daily challenges is that they have some sense of purpose that helps remind them why they're doing what they're doing every day."You are what you pay attention to, and if your willpower, focus and time are spent trying to control your body image, for example, that quite simply distracts you from becoming who you want to be. Too many young women lose their voices—and ultimately their purpose and passion—in the pursuit of perfection. And if you are busy with the ‘part-time job’ of an eating disorder, it is impossible to achieve your potential or uncover your unique gift to the world. Today on the Quest Series Roundtable, Jeffrey is joined by podcaster, blogger and author Katie Dalebout and executive coach, speaker and author Caroline Adams Miller to discuss some of the reasons why we tend to lose our purpose as young adults. Katie and Caroline both share their struggles with body image and eating disorders, explaining how they found their way back to health and discovered joy and meaning in giving back. They speak to the value of journaling when it comes to self-awareness, making meaning of our lives, and healing, and offer their best advice around taking care of yourself in the pursuit of a purposeful life. Key Takeaways [3:05] Katie’s take on her young genius Only child, raised on ‘adult farm’ Propensity for performing Knew wanted life to be big [8:24] Caroline’s childhood Girl who wanted to be loved School as happy place (solace in thinking, reading and writing) Sorrow gave empathy, desire to give back [11:50] Why we lose our purpose as young adults Girls lose their voices Must get angry enough to ‘throw off chains’ Lose purpose, passion [15:25] How Katie deals with the ‘mean girls’ in her mind Use as tool for self-awareness [19:18] The common issues Katie sees among young women Body image/diet culture Risk aversion (i.e.: entrepreneurship) Impact of social media (distraction, comparison) [31:02] Katie’s struggle with eating disorders Anorexia at end of college Received treatment, developed orthorexia Obsessed with control, miss out on life [38:02] Caroline’s fight against bulimia Thought next achievement would eliminate sadness Bulimia as ‘part-time job’ while studying at Harvard Started recovery in 1984 (just after marriage) Found joy in giving back, sharing hope [45:20] The value of journaling Allows for honesty, self-awareness (first step to change) Opportunity to make meaning of lives Positive intervention, part of healing process Ask good questions to get good response Eventually have to ‘feel the feelings’ [57:17] Caroline and Katie’s advice around self-care Purposeful life isn’t always easy Seek out your unique gifts Surround yourself with supportive people Be gentle with yourself Do things that make you feel good Out your shame, fear Connect with Katie & Caroline Katie’s Website Katie’s Podcast Caroline’s Website Caroline’s Blog Resources Let it Out: A Journey Through Journaling by Katie Dalebout Generation Startup Film Getting Grit: The Evidence-Based Approach to Cultivating Passion, Perseverance, and Purpose by Caroline Adams Miller My Name is Caroline by Caroline Adams Miller Caroline on The Good Life Project Activate Leadership: Aspen Truths to Empower Millennial Leaders by Jon Mertz Larissa Rainey Study: ‘The Search for Purpose in Life’ A special thanks to the early supporters of the Tracking Wonder Podcast. I Believe - the podcast Change can happen in an instant - I know because I've seen it happen, heard of it happening and had it happen to me too! I was reminded about this when hearing how a lady, Caroline Adams Miller, changed her life around from suffering bulimia to becoming the amazing person she is. How? by changing a belief or more specifically taking on a new empowering belief. It came through an AH-HA moment. You just have to be willing and open when they do come - because they will change your life. Last podcast we discussed how beliefs around our identity effect everything and a positive change of belief around your identity will positively effect everything from you skills/capabilities, your behaviors and how you can perform in any environment. When I work with clients it seems that I always find, just below he surface, an 'un-supporting' belief which reinforces the negative behavior or emotion. Then it's just a matter of understanding the positive intention for having this belief, emotions and behaviors - that's when the MAGIC happens and we find just the right process to make the positive changes quickly. Sometimes we have to go outside our comfort zone, I did when I embarked on this adventure and boy was it worth it! So here's where I want to encourage you to step up and achieve your dreams because I truly believe! Believe you can and will all you have to is decide, set your intention and then GO! Yes, I'll give you something to think about and ways, some 'ways' to start you on your way. It's simple and please don't think simple is soft because my simple processes are what I use to make empowered great changes in both mine and my clients life. I'll give you a couple of examples from my clinic and take you through finding the positive intention behind your negative beliefs and emotions/behaviors and understanding the conflict. How with this understanding you can begin to learn better ways to achieve that intention and guess what? Make positive changes and let go of the old ways. YAY!!!!! Guest: For almost three decades Caroline Adams Miller, MAPP has been a leading voice in applying the science of goal-setting, grit, happiness and success. In 2015, she was named “one of the ten Positive Psychology coaches to follow.” Her latest book is, Getting Grit: The Evidence-Based Approach to Cultivating Passion, Perseverance, and Purpose.Story: A fiercely-competitive athlete and academic even in her youth, Miller was exposed to Bulimia at the age of 14 and turned to it as an outlet and control mechanism. Outwardly successful by every external measure, she eventually attended Harvard, got married and started a family, all the while keeping her disorder secret. Until one day, gripped by the need to control her disorder any more, she began to reveal her secret life and seek help.Fortunately, she heard the right words at the right time during a support group meeting, which helped turn her life into one of purpose. Caroline drew upon this life-changing experience to write a book about bulimia that exposed the disorder in a way that is still saving lives. That also started her down the road to understanding the human condition, studying positive psychology, writing a series of books and eventually focusing in on goal-setting and grit.Big idea: Grit is only good when it’s used for the right reasons, in the right context, and awes and inspires other people to play bigger and be better. You’d never guess: Why Caroline’s great-great-grandfather was in Abraham Lincoln’s Honorary Guard and why Lincoln and other presidents frequented his store in Washington D.C.Current passion project: Educating thousands of people around the world on the science of goal-setting, grit and their intersection with Positive Psychology.Rockstar sponsors:Get paid online, on-time with Freshbooks! Today, we're joined by Caroline Miller, author, public speaker, coach, and expert on “grit.” For almost three decades Caroline has been a pioneer with her ground-breaking work in the areas of goal setting/accomplishment, grit, happiness and success. She is recognized as one of the world's leading positive psychology experts on this research and how it can be applied to one's life for maximum transformation and growth. In 2015 she was named “one of the ten Positive Psychology coaches to follow.” Caroline has also been featured in hundreds of magazines, newspapers and other media around the world for several decades, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, USA Today, US News and World Report, ABC, CBS, NBC, NPR and CNN. She's even published an impressive 6 books, including Creating Your Best Life, Positively Caroline, and Getting Grit. In this interview, I wanted to dive into a topic we haven't covered much at all on the show: grit, or, as I understand it, tenacity and perserverance. What is it? What does it help with? How does it work? Can you learn it? Of course, Caroline offered all of that - but much, much more. We go into her story, the role of passion, the power of patience, and much, much more. I just know you're going to love this episode.
Caroline Miller is one of the world's foremost experts in positive psychology and the author of books such as Creating Your Best Life and My Name Is Caroline. With Sounds True, she has recently published Getting Grit: The Evidence-Based Approach to Cultivating Passion, Perseverance, and Purpose. In this episode of Insights at the Edge, Tami Simon and Caroline discuss the concept of "grit"—the ability to stay passionate and persistent in one's long-term goals even in the face of considerable hardship. Caroline explains the different kinds of grit, including "false grit" that encourages stubbornness or flatters the ego. Finally, Tami and Caroline talk about the startling fact that we don't become happy when we are successful; rather, we become successful because we're happy first. (56 minutes)
Today, Kathy welcomes Caroline Adams Miller as they discuss long term recovery. Caroline struggled with bulimia in the 70’s and 80’s, and she shares her story from the past, but just as importantly her success in the present, as someone who is recovered. Within this podcast, Caroline expresses some opinions about the eating disorder field which may rub some people the wrong way. We want to emphasis that these are Caroline’s opinions, though we hope they can help lead to a dialogue or conversation that will continue to spearhead more stories of recovery in people of all ages.
