When we talk about building community, we often get stuck trying to bridge tribal divides, particularly in a media landscape designed to monetise division, amplify hatred, and draw us into cycles of righteous anger.But what if there was a different approach? One that creates a sense of individual and collective agency, that centres the gifts and strengths of everyone in the room in a way that lets everyone feel heard and so sweeps beneath the tribal divisions to the heart of things, where we all care about a future that feels safe, and open, where we all feel confident and heard and seen, where we can bring our soul's growth to the table and be taken seriously. So how do we achieve this social sculpting?  This week, we're talking to three members of the Generative Journalism Alliance to find out how they bring these very skills to disparate people in disparate places, to bring about real world changes. Tchiyiwe Thandiwe Chihana was born in Bradford to Zambian born parents, and her existence is a tapestry of migration through generations. She is a public-interest broadcaster & moderator, building civic storytelling platforms that connect institutions & communities. Managing Director, African Voices Platform (TV & DAB) and Co-Founder, Generative Journalism AlliancePeter Pula has been exploring the pathways to social evolution since founding the Grassroots Review in Canada in 1992. Since then he has been actively involved in federal politics, led a corporate communications firm and established the practice of Generative Journalism in an international arena. Jack Becher is a systems change facilitator and story weaver with a background shaped by social-ecological movements. For more than 40 years Juanita has collaborated as a thinking partner with senior leaders across sectors in the U.S. and abroad, crafting large-scale change strategies and creating innovative forums for strategic dialogue on critical business and societal issues. Juanita has served as a Research Affiliate with the MIT Organizational Learning Center and the Institute for the Future, and as a Fellow with both the World Business Academy and The Fielding Institute for Social Innovation. Now in her 80's, Juanita contributes to local community resilience and social healing from her family's legacy homestead in the mountains of North Carolina.  Since 1978, Mesquita da Silva has worked in Brazil and internationally in consulting, training, and coaching across human, social, environmental, educational, and organizational development, collaborating with nonprofits, universities, governments, businesses, and United Nations initiatives. Riak Sungai Kapuas yang mengalir tenang menjadi saksi bisu dari sebuah upaya besar dalam menjaga ingatan kolektif warga. Seorang ahli, David Cooperrider, pernah menyatakan bahwa dunia yang kita tinggali sebenarnya dibentuk oleh percakapan-percakapan yang kita lakukan. Di Kabupaten Kapuas Hulu, melalui Workshop Co-Creation: Mengarsipkan Cerita, Merawat Ingatan Warga Sungai Kapuas, sebuah narasi baru sedang dibangun untuk masa depan sungai ini. Perjalanan ini dimulai dengan membedah kekuatan diri melalui metode Perisai Diri. Rekan-rekan dari Putussibau Art Community, Samodra Kudong, dan Borneo Catalyst memetakan modal berharga yang mereka miliki: keahlian teknis, kelenturan hati dalam berkolaborasi, akses informasi, hingga keunikan diri yang menjadi jati diri setiap tim. Kekuatan inilah yang menjadi fondasi utama sebelum mereka terjun langsung ke tengah masyarakat. Visi besar pun mulai diletakkan dengan menatap jauh ke tahun 2060. Melalui perencanaan skenario, disadari adanya tarikan kuat antara arus masyarakat global dan kekuatan masyarakat lokal. Sebuah pertanyaan mendasar muncul: apakah peradaban Kapuas akan dibiarkan runtuh, ataukah kita akan bergerak bersama menuju skenario yang optimis dan transformatif? Jawaban atas pertanyaan ini mulai dirajut melalui dokumentasi yang dilakukan hari ini. Untuk mewujudkan misi tersebut, alat perjuangan bernama Z-Template digunakan sebagai logika dasar dalam menyusun cerita dan melakukan wawancara mendalam. Proses ini dimulai dengan Sensing, yaitu menangkap realitas yang kasat mata; diikuti Intuition untuk menggali makna di balik kenyataan; kemudian Thinking untuk menyusun data secara logis; dan diakhiri dengan Feeling agar cerita yang dihasilkan mampu menyentuh sisi kemanusiaan yang terdalam. Melalui latihan produksi podcast, setiap peserta belajar untuk mempraktikkan Radical Listening atau mendengar secara radikal. Prinsip utamanya adalah menyadari bahwa setiap pertanyaan yang tepat bukan sekadar pencarian informasi, melainkan sebuah intervensi yang mampu mengubah cara pandang narasumber maupun pendengarnya. Misi utama dari kegiatan ini adalah menemukan dan mendokumentasikan 300 Social Hackers atau para penggerak perubahan di tingkat tapak. Setiap tim bertanggung jawab untuk memotret dan menuliskan profil dari 100 pejuang lokal yang memiliki gagasan unik serta solusi nyata dalam menjaga kelestarian sungai dan kehidupan mereka. Seluruh temuan ini akan diabadikan dalam sebuah Coffee Table Book yang berfungsi sebagai arsip penting bagi peradaban di sepanjang Hulu Sungai Kapuas. Sebagai langkah nyata, perjalanan akan dilanjutkan menuju utara, menempuh waktu sekitar dua jam menuju Menua Sadap di Embaloh Hulu. Di pemukiman Dayak Iban ini, peserta akan melakukan sensitisasi atau pengasahan kepekaan terhadap alam dan masyarakat. Mendengarkan langsung cerita dari rumah Betang Sadap dilakukan dengan satu komitmen utama: menjaga martabat para narasumber. Dengan prinsip Appreciative Inquiry, setiap karya foto dan tulisan difokuskan pada hal-hal terbaik yang dimiliki warga. Tujuannya adalah memastikan bahwa setiap intervensi kreatif yang dilakukan mampu mengangkat harga diri dan menghargai keberadaan mereka sebagai penjaga sungai. Inilah misi Madani Berkelanjutan dan Inspirasi Tanpa Batas atau INSPIRIT bersama para penjaga garda depan Kapuas. Sebuah kerja kolaboratif untuk memastikan bahwa ingatan tetap terjaga dan peradaban tetap merawat kehidupan.

Kapuas sedang sesak napas. Merkuri di Kapuas Hulu, sedimentasi di Sintang, hingga banjir di Sanggau bukan lagi sekadar berita, tapi ancaman nyata bagi nyawa peradaban. Namun, di tengah rintihan sungai itu, muncul para peretas. Bukan peretas komputer yang bersembunyi di balik layar, melainkan Social Hacker. Mereka adalah para penyimpang positif yang memilih jalan berbeda saat orang lain menyerah pada krisis. Di tangan mereka, masalah besar dihack dengan kearifan lokal yang cerdas, menjaga sungai agar tetap menjadi sumber kehidupan, bukan sumber bencana. Tugas Social Hacker Team adalah memburu cahaya-cahaya sunyi ini. Mereka tidak mencari panggung di kantor dinas, tapi blusukan ke dermaga dan warung kopi saat fajar menyingsing. Menggunakan teknik Outlier Analysis yang dikemas dalam obrolan santai, tim ini mencari sosok-sosok "aneh" yang tetap mampu memanen kebaikan di tengah kerusakan alam. Dari ibu penenun yang setia pada warna alami hingga nelayan yang mengharamkan setrum, kawan-kawan tim bergerak merajut kembali simpul-simpul harapan yang sempat tercerai-berai oleh tekanan ekonomi. Inilah inti dari "Kapuas Bercerita". Kita tidak hanya mencatat angka kerusakan, tapi mengabadikan martabat manusia yang menolak punah. Melalui pendekatan Appreciative Inquiry, setiap narasi Hacker Sosial ini dijadikan energi baru untuk melawan keputusasaan. Kita ingin dunia melihat bahwa di pedalaman Kalimantan, tangan-tangan kasar yang berurat itu sedang bekerja memulihkan luka Kapuas. Selama para peretas sosial ini masih bergerak, Kapuas akan terus bercerita tentang daya lenting dan kejayaan peradabannya yang takkan pernah hanyut oleh banjir zaman.

Let's be honest. The world feels a little nuts right now. Divided. Loud. Unsettled. Tired. And organizations don't exist outside of that. They absorb it. So in this episode, we ask a simple but uncomfortable question: What does OD need to be when the world feels like it's coming apart? And maybe even harder… How do we act hopeful when we don't always feel hopeful ourselves? That's not fluff. That's leadership. Instead of offering grand theories, we get practical. We suggest starting here: Stop trying to fix everything. Start by finding the energy. In every organization — even the messy ones — there are pockets of good energy. People who still care. Teams that still want to build something better. Conversations that feel constructive instead of draining. If you think in systems, you know this is true. OD's job? Go find that energy. Name it. Amplify it. Build from it. We also talk about diagnosing energy instead of just diagnosing problems. Ask: • Where do people feel most alive? • Where do meetings feel productive? • Where is there momentum — even if it's small? Energy is data. And then we double down on participation. Because when people help shape the way forward, they create the hope they're looking for. Participation isn't soft. It's catalytic. We close with a practical exercise inspired by Power vs. Force by David Hawkins — a simple way to surface the life-giving energies (like courage and willingness) versus the draining ones (like fear and blame) that may be shaping your culture more than you realize. Consider this episode another tool for your toolkit. Not because we have all the answers. But because in chaotic times, OD isn't just about alignment and strategy. It's about stewarding energy. And if OD can't create hope… Who will?

Dr. Cassie Martin In this episode, Diana interviews Dr. Cassie Martin, Executive Director of Special Education for the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction in Washington State. She was also the architect of the Inclusionary Practices Demonstration Sites Project, which is what our conversation was focused around. She talks about the 16 demonstration sites that highlight inclusionary practices, and why and how she and her team brought these schools into existence, and how they have transitioned into a movement, and now a network. Appreciative Inquiry, equity, social justice, and research-based inclusive practices have made her model successful with educators and students. Dr. Martin also discusses the technical pieces as well as adaptive pieces and relationships that must be addressed in order to be successful in inclusive schooling.
