The second week is set at the US Open in Flushing Meadows, without Novak Djokovic or Carlos Alcaraz. Words we never thought we would be saying! Alexei Popyrin got his revenge after losing to Novak Djokovic twice at slams already this year. This means Novak Djokovic is without a slam for the first time since 2017 and the first time since 2002 that one of the Big 3 have not won a slam. Now that the draw has opened it up it presents a big opportunity for slam winner Jannik Sinner and Daniil Medvedev as well as home hopes Taylor Fritz, Tommy Paul and Frances Tiafoe to be the first US male winner since Andy Roddick in 2004! On the women's side the top seeds had no trouble racing through to Week 2, with Iga Swiatek, Coco Gauff, Sabalenka and Paolini all breezing through to Round 4. Muchova and Wozniacki are on the comeback trail and have made it to the fourth round for the second year in a row despite not having the most time on court in preparation. Joel and Chris also look ahead to some of next week's clashes and revisit their Tennis Weekly predictions and make new ones based on the form of the top players in Week 1 and the luck of the draw in New York.
Carlos Alcaraz and Frances Tiafoe's five set thriller lit up Wimbledon on a very wet and gloomy day in SW19. We hear from Carlos Alcaraz in his own words on why he is SO and SO tough to beat in 5th sets as well as Jasmine Paolini on her improving relationship on grass.Emma Raduncau was the British highlight of the day and her relentless dismantling of Maria Sakkari harked back to that US Open 2021 run when she defeated the same opponent in the semi-finals. We hear from Emma on how this performance ranks in her most fun matches and also her next opponent Lulu Sun on her fascinating background from New Zealand to Shanghai to Switzerland and even her UK connection. As always Joel and Chris look towards the order of play and make their predictions with clashes like Rybakina and Wozniacki as well as Cam Norrie playing Alexander Zverev on Centre Court.SOCIALSFollow us on Twitter, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube, plus email the show tennisweeklypod@gmail.com.MERCHPurchase Tennis Weekly Merch through our Etsy store including limited edition designs by Krippa Design where all proceeds go towards the podcast so we can keep doing what we do!REVIEWS***Please take a moment to rate and review the show on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you get your pods. Caroline Wozniacki er videre til tredje runde ved Wimbledon efter en mærkværdig kamp, der endte med at blive rykket til en anden bane midt i tredje sæt. Alligevel formåede hun at hive sejren hjem.

Ougi is in Las Vegas with his family. Alexandra talked about the scene in front of him - Las Vegas spread outing front of him. They talk 49ers KC Chiefs. Alexandra says her heart is with Mahomes but she picks 49ers to win and Ougi picks the Chiefs. They talk where in the world is tennis in a season that has everyone yawning so far. David Witt leaving Jessica Pegula as her coach was biggest news. Carlos Alcaraz has a BMW commercial. Osaka is a wild card in Abu Dahbi. Big question is can she compare her game with Swiatek, Sabalenka, and Rybakina. Osaka says she will just be patient. Alexandra compared Osaka and Wozniacki in their personalities. Alexandra said Osaka is quiet with her talk to the media - while Wozniacki is aggressive and loud about winning. Wozniacki says she should win everything she plays. Their game styles are as opposite as their personalities. They talk about Jay Z calling out the Grammys. Miley Cyrus. Fashion picks from Alexandra and outfit changes. Alexandra shouts out to Trevor Noah as an amazing host. She gives him a 10. They end the podcast calling out Taylor Swift, who has been a season favorite of Alexandra for not acknowledging the iconic Celine Dion on stage. Ougi lives in Quebec. Celine is from Montreal. Canada is upset with Taylor for snubbing the great Dion. Miley Cyrus was presented her first Grammy from Mariah Carey. She not only hugged her, she acknowledge her with butterflies in her acceptance speech. Taylor Swift was more interested in marketing her next album. It was definitely a faux pax that perhaps shows us a real side of Taylor Swift.
Ben and Tumaini turn to the women (and the miscellany) in this second Australian Open wrap show. This one was more straightforward, resultswise: Aryna Sabalenka was the best player, by a lot, defending her title in emphatic fashion. What do we make of her consolidation as a champion? And where is the sport at now, geopolitically? We also cover the strong runs of Coco Gauff and Zheng Qinwen, as well as early exits of Swiatek, Wozniacki, and Naomi Osaka. We also cover some other miscellaneous stories of the tournament, including the delightful Hsieh Su-wei, the tacky trophy boxes, and new the freedom of movement.
Welcome back to The Gay Tennis Podcast! In this episode, we discuss the gayest news from the first week of the 2024 Australian Open. Highlights include discussion of players like Osaka and Wozniacki who did not mother, debate about Djokovic's “brilliance,” defending some of our horrible predictions, and the gayest matches and disappointments thus far. We also explore what made our gay hearts sing, including Amanda Anisimova's return and Daria Kasatkina's tweets. Follow us on Twitter or Instagram for more from us! Hosted on Acast. Ben and Tumaini convene in the late hours of the night after Jelena Ostapenko thunderously knocked out Iga Swiatek, emphatically ending both Swiatek's title defense and her 75-week reign at the #1 ranking. Given Ostapenko's talent and head-to-head record, should this be considered a "bad loss" for Swiatek? Can Ostapenko win the tournament? How does Aryna Sabalenka come into the #1 ranking? Plus, a bit on Gauff d. Wozniacki, the constant corner chatter of coaches, and on how the worst way to beat Novak Djokovic seems to be to take the first two sets against him. In this week's special preview podcast, Erik Gudris and Richard Pagliaro join Chris Oddo to look ahead to the Wimbledon fortnight. Here are the topics we canvas: Can we really read anything into the grass court warm up results as indicators before Wimbledon? Maybe it's recency bias but I have my eyes on Keys / Kasatkina. I'd say yes. Huge experience for Alcaraz/ Swiatek/ I think you can pick out positives, and maybe not sweat the negatives. The draw's out, did it change anything about the way you view this Wimbledon playing out? To me it worked in Swiatek's favor a bit because the bottom half is stacked. Is Djokovic the best men's grass-court player in history if he wins this title? Federer 192-29 on grass with 19 titles. Djokovic 109-18 with eight titles. DJOKOVIC 3-1 VS FEDERER AT GRASS AND 3-0 VS FEDERER IN WIMBLEDON FINALS Has Swiatek played herself into favorite status with her performance at Bad Homburg? How is this year's draw different, with Russian and Belarusian players in the mix again? How will Wimbledon's decision to allow them to play impact the fortnight? What is your most outrageous pick for a run to the semis or beyond? How much has Alcaraz improved on grass – and as a player in general – since last Wimbledon? Won his final 10 sets at Queens. Using the slice. Returning aggression. Is Medvedev a tad overlooked as a grass-court talent? 35-19 with a title on grass. 8-4 at Wimbledon, missed last year but made second week for the first time in 2021 (Hurkacz) Can we expect anything from Berrettini or Kyrgios? What do we make of Venus Williams and what does it mean for Wimbledon to have her in the draw? What do we think of Wozniacki's comeback? 30 titles No.1 for 71 weeks Slam champion going to be 33. physicality???!!! Your favorite first-rounder, men's and women's?
