Sean Mullin is an award-winning filmmaker. He has been a writer, director and/or producer on seven films that have received theatrical releases. His critically-acclaimed feature film debut as a writer/director – Amira & Sam – won the top prize at numerous festivals and was distributed theatrically by Drafthouse Films in 2015. His documentary about baseball legend, Yogi Berra – It Ain't Over – received a theatrical release by Sony Pictures Classics in 2023. It is one of the best reviewed sports documentaries of all time – and it was nominated for two Critics Choice Awards and a Writers Guild Award. Prior to his filmmaking career, Sean graduated from West Point where he played rugby. He served an army officer, stationed in Germany and he finished his time as a Captain in the New York Army National Guard – where he was a first responder after the attacks of September 11th, 2001. For several months, he spent his days working as the Officer in Charge of the soldiers stationed at Ground Zero – and his nights performing stand-up comedy.  Sean's most recent documentary – Brothers on Three – is an unprecedented look inside the most unique culture of any Division I Athletic program in the country – the West Point Army Rugby Team – as they fight to defend their National Championship. The film hits theaters in November of 2025, and streaming in spring 2026. Jerry and John got an early screening and were blown away. In this weeks podcast, we discuss the film with Sean, and the incredible emotion it invokes as it follows the West Point rugby team. It is a film about positive masculinity, overcoming hardship, and the love among not only teammates, but the men and women who serve our country. Chris Armas is a 2025 inductee into the US Soccer Hall of Fame. During his playing career, he played 12 seasons in Major League Soccer for the LA Galaxy and Chicago Fire, and was a 5x MLS Best XI selection, an MLS and US Open Cup Champion, and played 66 games for the US National Team. The 2000 US Soccer Player of the Year and 2005 MLS Comeback Player of the Year, untimely injuries derailed his inclusion in the 2002 and 2006 US World Cup teams. After retireing from playing, Chris began a coaching career that has taken him to assistant coach roles at Manchester United and Leeds United, as well as MLS Head Coaching stops with the NY Red Bulls (2018 Supporters Shield winners), Toronto FC, and in 2024-2025 the Colorado Rapids. In 2024, he led the Rapids to a remarkable improvement of 23 points, finishing 7th after finishing dead last in 2023. For this he was named an MLSCoach of the Year finalist. In 2025, the Rapids missed out on the playoffs on the final day, and Armas and the Rapids agreed to part ways. In our conversation today, Chris and John discuss the importance of building strong relationships with athletes, establishing trust, and helping each player get better. We discuss his time in England, meeting Sir Alex Ferguson, the British press, and his time in Colorado including the the joys of 2024 and the heartbreak of missing out on the 2025 players due to a stoppage time goal. This week we step away from youth sports and talk about how parents can best support truly elite level, college, and professional level athletes on their journey in sports with Dr Sue Schimmel and Maureen Breeze, authors of the new book Playing the Long Game: A Handbook for Parenting Elite and College Athletes. We discuss conversation strategies, unintentional parental pressure, and investing in the relationship before you invest in the performance. Its a great conversation. Dr. Sue Schimmel is a clinical psychologist with over 20 years of experience working with professional and collegiate athletes. She serves as a registered provider for several major leagues, including the NHL, MLS, NFL, and PGA, and is also listed in the USOPC Mental Health Directory.  For three years, she worked intensively with a Division I men's soccer team and continues to consult with multiple collegiate programs. Dr. Schimmel is also the co-author of Playing the Long Game: A Handbook for Parenting Elite and College Athletes and co-founder of The CAP Project, which offers resources, consultation, and research to strengthen the coach–athlete–parent relationship.  Maureen Breeze is a leadership development specialist and certified executive coach serving organizations including NASA, Johns Manville, Arrow Electronics, Kraft Heinz, University of Colorado School of Medicine, and Newmont Mining, among others. She has facilitated leadership trainings and team capacity building sessions for organizations across the U.S. and in Germany, Mexico, Spain, Switzerland, and China. Dr Neeru Jayanthi is one of the leading experts on youth sports health, injuries, and sports training patterns, as well as an international leader in tennis medicine. He is currently leads the Emory University Tennis Medicine Program and is the President of the International Society for Tennis Medicine and Science (STMS) and a certified USPTA teaching professional. He has also been a volunteer ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) physician for 15 years, serves as a medical advisor for the WTA (Woman's Tennis Association) Player Development Panel, and is on the commission for the International Tennis Performance Association (ITPA). He has been selected to the board of directors for the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM) twice, and serves as a Consultant for the AAP (American Academy of Pediatrics) Council on Sports Medicine and Fitness, Aspen Institute Sport and Society Program, and Mom's Team. Dr. Jayanthi has won multiple AMSSM Foundation Research Grants for his collaborative research on early sports specialized training and overuse injury in young athletes. He previously was the medical director of primary care sports medicine at Loyola University Chicago for 12 years. In our conversation this week, which was originally aired back in 2020, we discuss overuse injuries, the importance of multi movement experiences for children, and how parents can best support their kids in today's youth sports world. Becky Burleigh began her college soccer coaching career at the ripe old age of 21, coaching Berry College to two NAIA National Championships before moving onto the University of Florida. In her nearly three decades at Florida, she won the 1998 NCAA Championship, a combined 26 SEC regular season and tournament championships, and over 500 games. Investigative journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell have seen some dumb litigators in their day, but the person representing former South Carolina Rep. RJ May is by far the biggest idiot. RJ May — who is representing himself in court after being charged with 10 federal counts of distributing child sexual abuse material this past June — filed his very first motion last week after firing his public defense team, who wouldn't file the motion for him … likely because it's a really bad idea.  The 32-page handwritten filing accuses the government of misconduct but not for any reason you could guess at. Mandy and Liz talk about RJ May's attempt at being clever and how they already foresee it blowing up in his face.  Also on the show, after 33-year-old (33:50) Scott Spivey was shot and killed on Sept. 9, 2023, by North Myrtle Beach businessman Weldon Boyd and his friend Bradley Williams, Horry County Police Department failed to separate both shooters. Hours later, when questioned by investigators and two prosecutors, Bradley Williams appeared nervous and careful about the details he gave. At that point, though, according to the case file, police had already intervened in the investigation to make sure Weldon and Bradley wouldn't be charged. So why interview them at all?  Mandy and Liz share the recording of Bradley's interview with police and the shocking moments that show just how little effort was put into investigating Scott's case. It's a surreal week for us at True Sunlight and LUNASHARK. On October 15th, the story that began here as the Murdaugh Murders Podcast will premiere worldwide as Murdaugh: Death in the Family on Hulu and Disney+. Seeing Mallory, Gloria,, Stephen, Maggie and Paul's stories honored on screen is bittersweet — a reminder of the victims at the heart of all of this. While that project brings global attention to systemic corruption in South Carolina, we remain deeply rooted in the work of uncovering the truth.  Thanks to Liz Farrell's intrepid reporting, Mandy Matney and Liz and review the 18-minute interview Horry County Police Department had with North Myrtle Beach businessman Weldon Boyd, who — along with his friend Bradley Williams — shot and killed 33-year-old Scott Spivey on Sept. 9, 2023, in Loris, South Carolina.  Despite inconsistencies between Weldon's 911 call (that they listened to as a group before Weldon was read his rights) the lead investigator in the case, Alan Jones, showed no interest in getting to the bottom of what actually happened that night with Scott. It is yet another example of Horry County Police doing their best to protect Weldon Boyd from being criminally charged in and civilly liable for Scott's death. So much to cover, so let's dive in!

Tom Renney is a Canadian former ice hockey coach and executive. Renney began his coaching career in the Western Hockey League (WHL), capturing a Memorial Cup in his two-year stint with the Kamloops Blazers. He served as an NHL head coach of the Vancouver Canucks, New York Rangers, and Edmonton Oilers and associate coach with the Detroit Red Wings. He also participated in the coaching staff for Canada's national teams on numerous occasions, capturing a silver medal as the head coach at the 1994 Winter Olympics. After retiring from coaching, Renney served as the chief executive officer of Hockey Canada from 2014 to 2022, and currently is dedicated to helping youth hockey programs at the grassroots level develop more resilient, confident athletes who thrive both on and off the ice. He's using his experience to work directly with minor hockey organizations to create more values-driven coaching environments and improve long-term athlete development. Investigative journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell share the horrifying details contained in the 105-page federal court transcript from the June 12 detention hearing of the now-former South Carolina House of Representatives legislator — and now-former state Freedom Caucus leader — Robert J. May III. RJ May. Though the tip about RJ's alleged activity was delivered on March 31, it would take nearly three months for that tip to make its way to South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson's Office, another week to make its way to the sheriff's office and another three months before RJ's house would be raided.  Mandy and Liz talk about what went down in the hearing and how it's even more egregious to know how few people in power have spoken out about RJ May's alleged actions. Investigative journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell were pleasantly surprised last week to find out how much power the South Carolina Attorney General's Office's packed with its punch back to Alex Murdaugh and his increasingly embarrassing attempts at getting his murder conviction overturned.  Six attorneys at the AG's office — including Creighton “BCE” Waters himself — compiled a nearly flawless 182-page response to Dick Harpootlian and Jim Griffith's arguments in favor of an appeal. Let's just say, BCE and Co. ate and left no crumbs.

Investigative journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell continue to connect the dots in the Scott Spivey shooting case as they impatiently wait for South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster to appoint a special prosecutor to revisit what has turned out to be one of the most corrupt police investigations in state history.  On this week's episode: Did shooter Weldon Boyd's months-long obsession over his ex-fiancé have him in a fighting-mood on the day he and his friend Bradley Williams killed Scott? In SLED's download of Bradley's phone there were 60 screenshots of text messages between Weldon and the mother and grandmother of his son, showing Weldon's increasing anger over his inability to control and manipulate his former fiancé. Those messages, along with court records, recorded phone calls and social media posts reveal that Weldon wasn't just momentarily upset about his broken engagement the afternoon of Sept. 9, 2023, when he encountered Scott on Highway 9 in Horry County…   Mandy and Liz share their new timeline on Weldon's potential state of mind as he tousled with Scott on the road, along with Weldon's tactical messages, seemingly crafted to create a paper trail for the narrative he wanted everyone around him to believe.  Let's dive in!

Investigative journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell share part three of their look into how the family of Scott Spivey was treated by the South Carolina Attorney General's Office. In April 2024, Prosecutor Heather Weiss  tried to explain why she felt there was “insufficient evidence” to charge North Myrtle Beach man Weldon Boyd and his friend Bradley Williams in Scott's shooting death.  Why would Heather Weiss' boss, Attorney General Alan Wilson, want to open the door to all-out vigilantism in South Carolina? Why would he want it to be legal for people to chase each other with guns and just be able to say the dead man started it with no meaningful investigation into that claim? Oh right. His brother Julian Wilson co-owns the private equity firm JJE Capital Holdings which owns the state's biggest weapons and ammunition retailer: Palmetto State Armory. How else can you explain why Alan's office continues to sit on their hands and do NOTHING when it comes to taking another look into the appropriateness of criminal charges against Weldon and Bradley?  Also on the show, did Weldon Boyd … record a video of himself killing Scott Spivey? At that April 2024 meeting with prosecutor Heather Weiss, Scott's family asked her if she was aware of this video. Surprise, surprise she wasn't.
