I went to the library recently and checked out so many books on self-help and self-improvement. It's really dawning on me that, in just a few days' time, I'll have a new name and, while I'll always be the same person, I am looking at it as a fresh start of sorts. One of the books I checked out was Caroline Adams Miller's 2009 book Creating Your Best Life: The Ultimate Life List Guide, and I enjoyed it so much that I reached out to her to chat about it. Well, wouldn't you know it, that same month Caroline had a new book coming out — and so today we are talking about both of these books! Caroline's new book is called Big Goals: The Science of Setting Them, Achieving Them, and Creating Your Best Life, which came out November 27. I found Caroline, both in her books and in this conversation, to be a wealth of knowledge. In Caroline's groundbreaking Big Goals, we learn about Goal Setting Theory and about goal setting practices for personal and professional goals that will ensure that we make all of our goals a reality. Caroline spent over 15 years researching this book, and it's packed with data. It connects beautifully with Creating Your Best Life, her 2009 book, which we also speak about today. Caroline is a pioneer in the areas of the science of goal setting, happiness, success, and grit. Creating Your Best Life was the first mass-market book on goal accomplishment that included evidence-based research, and it also connected the science of success with the science of happiness for the first time. It is so popular that it was re-released in 2021. Caroline also wrote many other books, including Getting Grit in 2017, and she is a keynote speaker who has worked with clients like Morgan Stanley, lululemon, Harvard Law School, and many others. Caroline has taught as part of the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton Business School Executive Education program and has also taught in NYU's School of Continuing and Professional Studies and the University of Texas-Dallas School of Management. A graduate of Penn and Harvard, she's been featured in hundreds of magazines, newspapers, and other media outlets, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, BBC, NBC, NPR, and CNN. She's also a top-ranked Masters Swimmer and even has a black belt in martial arts. She's clearly pretty good at this whole goal setting thing. We've got much to learn from her. Got grit? According to the guest in this episode of the CUES Podcast, getting grit is about having passion and perseverance in pursuit of long-term goals. It's about going outside of your comfort zone and taking risks to live your best life. As a bonus, the process of getting grit will likely inspire other people to want to behave that way as well. “Grit is really defined also by the fact that these are your goals, your unique goals that you want to accomplish,” explains Caroline Adams Miller, author of the books Getting Grit and Creating Your Best Life. “And why is that? Because it's this passion, this inner passion that keeps you going when the going gets tough. And if it's someone else's goal, you're not going to have that. So it has to be your why not someone else's why. “People have what I call authentic grit simply by virtue of how they live and how they do hard things,” continues Miller, who will present a keynote about grit at Directors Conference, slated for Dec. 4-7 in Las Vegas. On the other hand, it's a good idea to try to avoid having what Miller dubs “stupid” grit. “Stupid grit is marked by arrogance and a lack of humility,” Miller explains in the show. “Stupid grit is when conditions have changed and you refuse to take in information or data from the environment or other people that would caution you to change course or think a little bit differently about how to behave.” Fortunately, authentic grit is contagious. Miller tells in the show about how West Point roomed cadets with somewhat lower grit scores with cadets with higher grit scores. Over time, the overall grit scores went up. It's a great idea to embed people with the qualities of authentic grit “into your organization, on your team, in your school environment, in your family because we know that simply observing and being around it .. has that effect of elevating and uplifting other people's behaviors,” she says. The show also gets into: Selfie grit and faux grit The dangers of having raised a “self-esteem” generation Who does not need to develop more grit Links for this show:Directors Conference Books by Caroline Adams Miller, including Getting Grit More content from Directors Conference speakersVideo: Five Things Boards Need to Know About Data Governance If You're Not Thinking About Next-Generation Board Leadership, You Should Be

Hatoon Kadi is a Saudi Arabian comedienne, best known for her YouTube show Noon Alniswa, where she has over 355,000 subscribers. Hatoon uses satire to present social phenomena from a woman's perspective, and is one of the funniest people I’ve ever met. Perfectly bilingual in Arabic and English, she also teaches Research Methodology at a private university. Hatoon started her career as IT support – that person you call if you’re computer gives you blue screen of death, or your hard drive self-combusts. Cables and mouses were not her end game and she pursued her PhD in social science & information systems. Hatoon was inspired to start creating content while she was doing her PhD, when she realized that there were plenty of Saudi Arabian internet comedians, but almost no women at the time. We had a high-energy discussion about her path, going from IT personnel to YouTube comedy. We talked about how Hatoon’s career prior to freelance comedy instilled in her habits that have served her well professionally. We talked about the messages we receive as children and why they should be revisited. We covered cyber-bullying, the imposter syndrome and self-worth. Hatoon also shared practical tips on content creation. My two favorite quotes of the episode are: “Knowledge is nothing without sharing it”. And “It’s brave to quit if things are not working”. Hatoon recommended books by two Egyptian authors: Youssef El Sibai and Mustafa Mahmoud - as well as the work of Elizabeth Gilbert. To see Hatoon in action, head to her YouTube channel Noon Alniswa. If you'd like to get in touch with Hatoon, you can find her @hatoonkadi on Twitter and Instagram. What makes one person persevere through challenges, while another succumbs to them? The character trait of grit is only partially inherent; people can develop the grit they need to flourish in difficulties with the right mindset. In this episode, hosts Kelly Palace and Maria Parker speak with best-selling author about her latest book GETTING GRIT and how we can get grittier. You’ll love to hear great advice from Caroline Adams Miller, who is one of the world’s leading experts on the science behind successful goal setting and the use of "good grit" to achieve hard things. For more than 30 years, she’s been sharing her research-backed, actionable strategies to help people cultivate more grit and dig deeper to clarify and achieve their toughest goals. Caroline breaks down the idea of grit into several types: Good grit: This is the type of grit that is authentic, and that awes or inspires others. Bad grit: Also referred to as "stupid" or "stubborn" grit, this type happens when the individual pursues personal goals at all costs. Selfie grit: The need to tell everyone about the difficult things the individual is accomplishing. Faux grit: People who want the recognition of doing accomplishment without actually doing the hard work. Hear Caroline speak in person at the upcoming event: Creating Your Best Life -- How to Pursue Meaningful Goals and Live with No Regrets on April 26 to 29 at the Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health in Stockton, Massachusetts. Learn more here. Quote of the Week: "People with grit are renowned for setting hard—some would say unrealistic—goals. Because people with grit don’t go for easy, low-hanging fruit and have to work persistently for a long time to see success, their pursuit of tough goals, and often their success in achieving them, is what inspires other people to step out of their comfort zone, too." - Caroline Adams Miller Subscribe to the Champion's Mojo podcast on iTunes, Spotify and Google Play. Caroline Miller is one of the world’s leading experts on the science of goal setting and grit. She’s spent more than 30 years helping individuals, leaders and companies to cultivate grit to achieve their goals and find personal and professional success. Caroline is the author of six books, including Getting Grit and Creating Your Best Life. Her work has been featured in The New York Times, The Washington Post, BBC and CNN. During our chat we discussed the two kinds of goals – learning goals and performance goals – and how grit helped Caroline overcome bulimia at the age of 22. We talked about the value of humility, hope and optimism. We defined happiness and I learned the happiest people are the people who wake up to hard goals – people who have “ikigai”, a Japanese word that means “reason for being”. I was delighted to hear that only half of grit and happiness are hard-wired – the rest we can develop. Caroline mentioned “job-crafting”, a way to find your purpose in whatever role you have. We also got into women bullying other women, and how important it is that women support each other through “active constructive responding” and push each other forward. At the end of the episode, Caroline makes specific recommendations to build your tribe and help others thrive: for example, find two women you know and share their success stories on two social media platforms #share222; or list 5-6 people you know who are givers and set up a monthly meeting to share goals and hold each other accountable to them (in a kind way!) Too often, women feel a sense of competition with other women and tear each other down instead of supporting each other. Today I have the pleasure of interviewing my dear friend, and a genuine inspiration to me and countless others, Caroline Adams Miller, an expert in, among other things, utilizing positive psychology research to help people find success, and how we as women can support and uplift each other. When Caroline was young she struggled with competition with other women. Her awareness of unhealthy competition among women continued over the years, and as she spoke with more and more women, she learned that every women seems to have had experiences of other women tearing them down or engaging in forms of unhealthy competitiveness with them. There are many reasons why women engage in this unhealthy competition with each other. For some, it's driven by jealousy. For others it's scarcity theory, the fear that there's only “one seat at the table,” or that there isn't enough success to go around. For others it might have a cause rooted in evolutionary biology. And for others, watching another woman go after her dreams in a big way triggers FOMO, a Fear Of Missing Out. Caroline shares research that says that 84% of women confess to being surrounded by “frenemies,” friends who are really enemies, and women often keep these people around out of fear of standing out and standing up for themselves. But keeping them in your life is a huge danger, because they bring you down and make it much more likely that you'll give up on going after your dreams. Research by Shelly Gable at UCLA on Active Constructive Responding teaches us that the way people around us respond to us greatly increases the chances that we'll abandon our goals or interpret our progress as negative. We need to be much more selective and intentional about who we allow into our “inner circle.” The people who are “in” should be the people who are enthusiastic about our dreams, our goals, and our ideas. We also discuss Adam Grant's book, Give and Take, and what we can learn from it about giving to others, and the concept of “relational grit,” which Caroline and Lee Waters, the current president of the International Positive Psychology Association, have come up with. Caroline and I are both huge supporters of dialogue with other like-minded women, participation in masterminds to uplift each other and support each other's efforts towards goals, and we talk about the importance of developing these support systems. As Caroline learned more about this issue she eventually came to the point where she decided that talking about it wasn't enough; she needed to DO something about it! So she came up with a multi-pronged approach drawing on Shelly Gable's research on Active Construcive Responding and on Peter Gollwitzer's work on implementation intentions (which involves creating if-then scenarios to prompt you to do things that are difficult for you). Caroline has created a simple way for women to uplift other women, which she calls Share 2 To 2. Every week, Caroline shares the successes of two women, each on two different social media platforms, and she uses the hashtag, #Share222. She often doesn't know the women she uplifts personally; she finds them on LinkedIn, or on some other platform, and shares their successes with others. She firmly believes that by uplifting other women and highlighting their successes, there will be more women at the table in positions of authority, and there will be less of an effect of scarcity theory, less fear from some women of other women succeeding, and it will be a positive spiral. I end with a few Purpose Power Tips, including learning about Active Constructive Responding, using the hastag #Share222, and “I'll have what she's having!” Click here to learn more about the summit in Melbourne, Australia, in July 2019, in which Caroline will be participating with the founder of Appreciative Inquiry as they explore, using the tools of positive psychology, how women can uplift and inspire other women in the best possible ways. To learn more about Shelly Gable's work on Active Constructive Responding, here's an article summarizing it, and here's her original research. To learn more about Caroline, go to CarolineMiller.com, and for more background into #Share222, take a look at her LinkedIn articles on it.
