In this episode of ThimbleberryU, we talk about what a giant IPO like SpaceX could mean for a personal investment portfolio. The conversation starts with common questions many investors ask when a major private company gets ready to go public. Am I missing out? Is my index fund going to own it? Am I exposed to something I do not understand? Amy explains that many people assume an index fund owns the biggest companies in the market, but that is not always true. Index funds follow rules. For example, a company in the S&P 500 usually has to meet certain requirements around profitability, public trading shares, and time as a public company. So a company can be huge and still not appear in an index fund right away. That distinction matters, but probably not as much as the headlines make it feel. For most investors, one company being absent from an index now or added later is a small part of a diversified portfolio. The bigger risk is behavioral. A headline can create fear of missing out, and that fear can push someone to chase a single hot stock. That reaction can do more damage than the index rules themselves. Amy also explains where this can show up in real accounts. Broad index funds may be held in taxable brokerage accounts, 401(k)s, or IRAs. If those funds are designed to track an index, then the rules of that index shape what the investor actually owns. An index fund does not necessarily mean the investor owns everything. It means the investor owns what the index includes at that time. The episode also explains the difference between active and passive investing. An active fund has a manager making ongoing decisions about what to buy and sell. A passive fund tracks an index mechanically. That does not mean no decisions were made. It means the decisions are built into the index rules rather than made day to day by a fund manager. Amy thinks this is not a one-time issue. Large private companies have been staying private longer and going public at larger sizes. That means investors may keep seeing a large gap between when a company becomes enormous and when it appears in an index fund. The practical takeaway is not to reshuffle a portfolio because of a headline. The better move is to understand what your funds actually own and why they own it. Investors should check whether their index exposure reflects their goals, either with an advisor or through careful research. The calm, fact-based review is more useful than reacting to news. Would you agree with this sentence: “It is becoming common knowledge that social media use has led to harmful psychological consequences, including the amplification of a psychological phenomenon known as FOMO, or fear of missing out.” Those words penned by professor Keith Hess of Oklahoma Baptist University in a recent edition of Salvo Magazine, in an article entitled “Beware the Other Attention Deficit Disorder.” Hess says that FOMO is pushing us into two manners of faulty thinking. One is the bandwagon fallacy, where we see something online and we decide to do it only because others are doing it. The second is the false urgency fallacy, where we act quickly without thinking, simply because we feel we will miss out if we don't. These fallacies are nurturing us and our kids away from acting with wisdom and discernment. ‘Banks are doing stupid things.’ Zijn grootste zorg is nu: Banks are doing stupid things. For this show The Boys pair a rye you might not know (but should) and a limited edition tequila you might not find (but should). The Catoctin Creek Roundstone Rye is a 100% rye mash bill and the Mijenta Blanco blends agave from all five states of the official regions of production. There's a long tangent about limited editions, allocations, the Bourbon arc vs the Tequila arc, Fear Of Missing Out, advertisers, haters, influencers, taters, piñas, industry/market predictions and no real solutions to any of it - if you dare! The only fact we can all agree on is this: your tasting notes are valid because they are yours. Both spirits are loaded with complex and delicate flavors, but you'll have to hang on to the end to see how the QuickSips™ turn out. Grab some whiskey and some tequila, invite a friend, listen and sip along, and Make It A Happy Friday!™

Today I am recording on another topic, one that has been coming up recently in correspondence and conversations. I think it may be helpful if it were addressed. The topic is Spiritual FOMO. FOMO is, of course, the acronym meaning Fear Of Missing Out. I notice Spiritual FOMO both in Christian circles and among people interested in nondual spirituality. In nonduality it comes in the form of Enlightenment FOMO. Quite a few people who reach out to me are afraid that they are going to miss out on enlightenment. They are afraid they will continue to miss out. They do not get it, and they are afraid that they will never get it. They have been trying spiritual practices for years, and they feel like they will never spiritually awaken. They are afraid that they will never be enlightened, at least not in this lifetime, if they believe in multiple lifetimes. They feel like giving up. There is a parallel in Christianity. Many Christians feel like they are missing out on something important in the spiritual life that their form of Christianity is not providing them. That there has to be something more than what they are experiencing in their church or tradition or religion or personal spiritual practices. That they are missing out on the fullness of God, on the genuine spirituality. Sometimes among Christians this fear goes all the way to feeling like they are going to miss out on heaven. Through honest reflections on comparison, expectations, and the pressure to measure up, she shares how God has been reshaping her perspective. Her story offers a refreshing reminder that a life surrendered to Christ is never wasted, even when the path feels unseen or slow.Topics DiscussedThe subtle ways comparison fuels fear and insecurityWhy “falling behind” is more about perception than truthLearning to trust God with timing, calling, and identityHow hidden seasons often become the most shaping onesWhat surrender looks like when fear gets loudAllowing God to define significance instead of culture or peersKey TakeawaysFear of wasting your life usually grows in the gap between what you expected and what God is actually doing.Comparison blinds you to the quiet work of grace happening beneath the surface.God never wastes obedience; He wastes nothing surrendered to Him.Slow seasons are often the most formative, teaching humility, trust, and resilience. The antidote to fear isn't striving harder but resting more deeply in God's faithfulness.Faith Talks is a monthly program on the Thee Generation Podcast designed to help young ladies grow in faith and live it out daily. As part of the “Fear Free Fall” series, Heather unpacks the spiritual roots of FOMO, exploring how it impacts our faith, contentment, and even our relationship with God. It can be tempting to make your life seem much more luxurious and interesting than it actually is. We think if we post videos at a cool party or photos of us in an expensive car, it will wow others and make them envy our lives. But what is more important?
