The Dating Game Killer out now!  Luis and Angelo discuss Rodney Alcala, the notorious serial killer known as The Dating Game Killer, who is believed to have killed up to 130 people during the 1970's.  Criss-crossing the country from California to New York over a 10-year span, Alcala was best known for his appearance as a contestant on The Dating Game Show in 1978, where he was chosen as the winning bachelor, all while in the midst of a murder spree that included at least 8 women.  It was only after authorities discovered a storage unit containing thousands of photos of more than 100 unidentified young women did it become apparent that Rodney Alcala may have been responsible for more deaths than any other serial killer in U.S. history.

We regret to inform you that today's legal regime of protecting corpses from desecration is a modern development, and even worse, royals have a rich history of relying on them for all sorts of things. Today we get into the alleged curative powers of corpses, especially among Spain's Hapsburg leaders a few centuries back. Don Carlos himself, whom we covered last week, is said to have recovered from that serious head wound he received with the help of a local miracle-maker named Diego de Alcala - a Franciscan lay brother who had died some hundred years before. Apparently the Spanish royals frequently slept beside the corpses of the venerated long dead. For instance, Isidore the Farmer was born around 1070 in Madrid and, over the course of his life, developed a bit of a legend for alleged miracles and feeding the poor. In death, his legend continued to grow, resulting in him being declared a Saint in the Catholic Church in 1619, then having his teeth pulled out to be placed under Charles II of Spain's pillows to aid his many ailments in 1696. Speaking of Charles IIs, England had one, too, and he also had a penchant for human body parts. In his case though, the medicinal aspect was attained through consuming a tincture made from human skull fragments. And best of all, "The King's Drops" became all the rage across Europe for a century or more, which was certainly one way to put the remains of your ancestors to work for you. When Cheryl Bradshaw appeared on the popular game show The Dating Game in 1978, she was charmed by bachelor number one, Rodney Alcala, and by the end of the episode, she'd chosen him to take her on a date. However, just minutes after the episode finished taping, Cheryl met bachelor number two in person backstage and was immediately uncomfortable and quickly contacted producers of the show to cancel the date. Rodney Alcala: The Dating Game Killer & the Psychological Impact of Predators This week on Terror Talk, we delve into the twisted mind of Rodney Alcala, the so-called “Dating Game Killer.” Known for his charm and good looks, Alcala was a manipulative predator whose crimes shocked the nation. We explore his psychopathy, criminal behavior, and the chilling psychology behind his ability to deceive and harm. We also discuss Woman of the Hour, Anna Kendrick's powerful directorial debut based on Alcala's infamous appearance on The Dating Game. In 1978, a Texan-born man went on national TV, competing in and ultimately winning an episode of the popular American game show The Dating Game. This man was, according to host Jim Lange, a "successful photographer" who you might find "skydiving or motorcycling." Left out of that description – unknown to Lange, the show's producers and millions watching at home – was a terrifying secret: that Rodney Alcala was a rapist and murderer, who would eventually be sentenced to life in prison. He died in 2021, leaving behind a terrible legacy of unthinkable violence – conclusively linked to eight murders, with the true number of his victims thought to be closer to 130.This week on Script Apart, Al is joined by Ian McDonald – the screenwriter behind Woman Of The Hour, an Anna Kendrick-directed thriller telling the tale of Alcala's Dating Game appearance. Other storytellers might have approached this real-life story determined to answer one question: what possessed a man meant to be lying low, evading the law, to parade himself in front of the nation, for all to see? Ian, though, had a different question that he wanted to get to the bottom of. Never mind the motivations of this cowardly abuser. How was his killing spree enabled by a broader culture of misogyny, prevalent in the media? To answer that question, the film centres not on Alcala, but on Cheryl Bradshaw, a real-life contestant on that episode of The Dating Game, played by Kendrick. In the spoiler conversation you're about to hear, you'll discover why that is, what the meaning of the film's evocative title is, and what it is about society that seems to reward misogynists – then and now, more than ever.Script Apart is hosted by Al Horner and produced by Kamil Dymek. He also pleaded guilty and received a sentence of 25 years to life for two further murders committed in New York and was also indicted for a murder in Wyoming, although charges were dropped due to a technicality. While he has been conclusively linked to eight murders, Alcala's true number of victims remains unknown and could be as high as 130.Alcala compiled a collection of more than 1,000 photographs of women, teenage girls and boys, many in sexually explicit poses. In 2016, he was charged with the 1977 murder of a woman identified in one of his photos. Alcala is known to have assaulted one other photographic subject, and police have speculated that others could be rape or murder victims as well.Prosecutors have said that Alcala "toyed" with his victims, strangling them until they lost consciousness, then waiting until they revived, sometimes repeating this process several times before finally killing them. One police detective described Alcala as "a killing machine," and others have compared him to Ted Bundy. Alcala is often referred to as the Dating Game Killer because of his 1978 appearance on the television show The Dating Game in the midst of his murder spree. Full Text of ReadingsTuesday of the Twenty-third Week in Ordinary Time Lectionary: 438The Saint of the day is Saint Thomas of VillanovaSaint Thomas of Villanova’s Story Saint Thomas was from Castile in Spain and received his surname from the town where he was raised. He received a superior education at the University of Alcala and became a popular professor of philosophy there. After joining the Augustinian friars at Salamanca, Thomas was ordained and resumed his teaching–despite a continuing absentmindedness and poor memory. He became prior and then provincial of the friars, sending the first Augustinians to the New World. He was nominated by the emperor to the archbishopric of Granada, but refused. When the see again became vacant he was pressured to accept. The money his cathedral chapter gave him to furnish his house was given to a hospital instead. His explanation to them was that “our Lord will be better served by your money being spent on the poor in the hospital. What does a poor friar like myself want with furniture?” He wore the same habit that he had received in the novitiate, mending it himself. The canons and domestics were ashamed of him, but they could not convince him to change. Several hundred poor came to Thomas's door each morning and received a meal, wine, and money. When criticized because he was at times being taken advantage of, he replied, “If there are people who refuse to work, that is for the governor and the police to deal with. My duty is to assist and relieve those who come to my door.” He took in orphans and paid his servants for every deserted child they brought to him. He encouraged the wealthy to imitate his example and be richer in mercy and charity than they were in earthly possessions. Criticized because he refused to be harsh or swift in correcting sinners, Thomas said, “Let him (the complainer) inquire whether Saint Augustine and Saint John Chrysostom used anathemas and excommunication to stop the drunkenness and blasphemy which were so common among the people under their care.” As he lay dying, Thomas commanded that all the money he possessed be distributed to the poor. His material goods were to be given to the rector of his college. Mass was being celebrated in his presence when after Communion he breathed his last, reciting the words: “Into your hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit.” In his lifetime Thomas of Villanova was already called “the almsgiver” and “the father of the poor.” He was canonized in 1658. Thomas of Villanova’s liturgical feast is celebrated on September 22. Reflection The absent-minded professor is a stock comic figure. Thomas of Villanova earned even more derisive laughs with his determined shabbiness and his willingness to let the poor who flocked to his door take advantage of him. He embarrassed his peers, but Jesus was enormously pleased with him. We are often tempted to tend our image in others' eyes without paying sufficient attention to how we look to Christ. In the 1970s, serial killer Rodney Alcala killed at least 7 people in California, New York, and likely many other states. When he was arrested, hundreds of photographs of men, women, and children were found that he had taken as a “professional photographer”, and many were extremely explicit. While he was eventually convicted of 7 murders and other crimes, it is believed the hundreds of unidentified subjects of his photographs could be victims of Alcala's that are currently cold cases. Here are the photos that have been shared with the police asking for the public's help in identifying the people in them. If you have information about the identities of the people in the photographs, you can contact Sgt. Sam Shepherd with the Huntington Beach Police Department at (714) 536-5947. Some of today's top storiesWe begin this morning with the latest on the Borel Fire, still burning in the mountains east of Bakersfield.     People in those communities still watching and waiting to return to their homes...or at least to go back and see what's left.  The U.S. Forest Service now reporting this wildfire has scorched more than 58-thousand acres. But firefighters continue to make progress... The wildfire is about 39-percent contained as of news time. The Borel Fire started over a week ago when a pick-up truck crashed over the edge of the canyon on highway 178...catching fire and killing the driver. The inferno exploded in a matter of hours...eating up dry fuel and racing up unforgiving terrain...showing firefighters fire weather they'd never seen in that area before. It more than tripled in size Friday night...destroying the historic town of Havilah in the process. The blaze continued to spread over the weekend...threatening the communities of Bodfish and Lake Isabella. But conditions eased and firefighters reported containment for the first time Monday. State and local leaders declared Borel an emergency...and CHP reopened highway 178 Tuesday. Still thousands of people remain under evacuation orders and warnings...and, while the scope of the evacuations hasn't grown in days... there's no clear timeline of when those orders will be lifted. The people of Bodfish are slowly returning to their homes in the Kern River Valley, with the grim prospect of picking up the pieces from the fire that tore through their community.    17's Rob Hagan has more on the relief efforts there.Price gouging during an emergency like the Borel Fire is illegal.    That's the warning from California's top prosecutor. Attorney General Rob Bonta issuing a reminder to businesses and landlords they cannot raise the prices of essential supplies, hotels, rental housing and more during this time of a natural disaster.    He urges those who believe they've been the victim of price gouging to report it to their local authorities.    Any business found in violation will be subject to criminal prosecution that can result in a year in jail and a possible fine up to $10-thousand dollars. In your 17 News court watch...    The trial of two men charged with the murder of a Kern County corrections counselor is nearing its end after weeks of testimony. Closing arguments began in a Bakersfield courtroom yesterday.    Prosecutors say Robert Roberts and Sebastian Parra fatally shot prison counselor Benny Alcala Jr. while trying to rob him at the Stockdale Target parking lot the night of Aug. 24, 2022. But an attorney for Roberts says *Parra* was the shooter...painting him as a psychopath who killed Alcala for no reason.    Meantime, Para's lawyer says Roberts acted alone and his client was nearby, but didn't participate.    Closing arguments will resume later this morning. The discussion on a motion to postpone a preliminary hearing of a former Bakersfield police officer charged with vehicular manslaughter is set for today.    The motion hearing was originally scheduled for July 23rd.    But attorney David A. Torres made a special appearance for the attorney representing former officer Ricardo Robles...and asked that the hearing be moved to August First -- which is today.    The 24-year-old officer is accused of driving a patrol vehicle early January 19th, 2023 at more than 100 mph –- without overhead flashing lights activated — as he tried to catch up to a chase.     He ran a stop sign and hit a Honda Accord at the intersection of South Vineland and Muller roads -- killing the driver, Mario Lares, and seriously injuring the passenger, Ana Hernandez.
