Brave new world, indeed: Globetrotting Shakespeare is presenting a live and virtual performance of The Tempest on Saturday, July 11, 2020, featuring multiple actors in four different countries and at least six time zones from Shakespeare Napa Valley, Shakespeare by the Sea, Prague Shakespeare Company, Atlanta Shakespeare Company at the Shakespeare Tavern Playhouse, and Shakespeare at Notre Dame. Directors Jennifer King (l) and Suzanne Dean (r) discuss how the project came together; how they see challenges as opportunities to create relationships and communities through Shakespeare; how they're seizing this opportunity to Rethink, Reframe, and Resume; the unfortunate problems with technology; how a disruptive pandemic has its own tempestuous qualities; and how we must continue finding (despite sometimes losing) our humanity in crisis. cw: adult language, religious trauma, eating disorder Bridget McCarthy (she/her,@SomethingWittyPlease) is an actor, playwright, teaching artist, and community theatre maker. In 2013, she stepped into a men’s prison for the first time and witnessed a theatre making circle. She fell in love with theatre as a tool of amplification, empowerment, and connection. Since then, she’s worked with the American Shakespeare Center, Elm Shakespeare, Pigeon Creek Shakespeare, Cincinnati Shakeapeare, and is now in residence at the Atlanta Shakespeare Company. Bridget’s greatest bliss is using theatre as a tool of amplification for unexpected voices. She has devised new theatre pieces with her neighbors experiencing incarceration, homelessness, folks who are reintegrating into life after sexual slavery, with those battling addiction, and with brave new Americans who came to us as refugees. In addition to community work, she is an advocate for eating disorder awareness and mental health destigmatization. Her one woman show is called Fat Juliet: One Woman’s Unsolicited Thoughts About Eating Disorders, Christian Extremism, Shakespeare, and AC/DC. It premiers this summer in Atlanta and is available for booking starting this fall. Host: Emily Stamets (she/her), @theemilystamets Original music: Jaclyn S. O'Connor Graphics: Tiffany Spence
Welcome to my very first podcast. Treading the Boards is a book I've published for 20 years. It gives information for over 400 regional equity theatres around the US so theatre artists can get work. Between publication dates, a weekly email goes out with news, articles, interviews and sometimes Something I Had To Share With You because I'm so excited about it. The reason for the email is to keep you, the theatre artist, well-informed. It seemed like a natural transition to creating this podcast which supplements the email and the book. In this first episode, I'll give you some back story about how I got here but first the news. In Season Announcements, Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati in Ohio, MetroStage in Virginia, The Shakespeare Tavern Playhouse with the Atlanta Shakespeare Company based in Georgia and PICT Classic Theatre in Pittsburgh all announce their 2018-2019 seasons. The next segment is Who's In and Who's Out which will focus on Artistic & Executive leaders coming in & going out. No movers & shakers this week though. Next up is Articles & Interviews which are things I've read or listened to that I think they are relevant and interesting. There's a Q&A with Laura Leffler, AD of Umbrella Collective & associate AD for Park Square Theatre, on MinnesotaPlaylist.com. Playbill.com's Stage Directions Interview with director Darko Tresnjak and on PBS.org Christiane Amanpour interviews Sir Ian McKellen.
