Good Sunday to you,I am headed to Birmingham and Huddersfield week after next. If you are in either neck of the woods, come and see the show.Don't it always seem to go That you don't know what you've got ‘til it's goneJoni MitchellBack in the 1980s I remember the newly privatised British Telecom, in its wisdom, decided to get rid of Britain's red telephone boxes and replace them with things made of glass or was it perspex? The originals were designed, I've since read, by one Giles Gilbert Scott, who got the gig as a result of a design competition. (I've since learned he also designed Battersea Power Station, so he was quality).British Telecom wanted a rebranding, so somebody at HQ decided to waste lord-knows-how-much money getting rid of however many phone boxes there were around the country - they're cast iron so this was not an easy job, nor a cheap one - and replace them with something better, which inevitably turned out to be worse. Here's the iconic before:Here's what they replaced them with:I barely remember these. You probably don't either. Because they were soon got rid of and replaced with these. Why did they bother? The glass replacements are just so bland you cannot not even describe them as ugly. They are just characterless nothings. Why people in corporations feel this need to glassify everything - it's happened to buildings as well, of course - is beyond me. I guess they think it's “dynamic”. (Indeed, they've done something similar to language).BT justified the rebranding by saying existing phone boxes got vandalised: prostitutes and mini cab drivers left their calling cards in them, people pissed in them. All of this is true, but there were other ways of dealing with these issues. (It's not unlike the many invented problems being cited today to justify hoisting digital ID on us). The bottom line is that the powers that be wanted a rebrand. Good for their egos, I guess. And thanks to the privatisation they now had bucket loads of capital to spend on it.Whatever. They spent a shedload and made it worse. So there I was walking along Parliament Square the other day and what did I see but a this huge queue of tourists lining up to have their photo taken by a phone box. Not one of the glass ones obviously. And I mean huge queue. See for yourself.I would say there are 40 or more people in that queue. If they each take 45 seconds for their photo, that's a good 30-minute wait. The rest of the world loves the English for who we are. For our history, our culture, our style, our character, our charm, our order, our beauty. That's why so many tourists flock here. Why are we incapable of appreciating ourselves and loving what we have created? - instead choosing to self-hate and apologise for what we have done. The rest of the world wants the England of red phone boxes, afternoon tea, good manners and Downton Abbey. They don't want England for its diversity (diversity is not London's greatest strength, despite what they mayor may tell you - London's greatest strength is that it is the capital of England, not Diversityland), nor for its gender-neutral toilets, glass fronted buildings, low trust communities or its street crime. They want England for the English. So the point of today's missive.A few years ago somebody got the no-doubt-very-well-paid gig erecting cycle sheds around the capital. Here was an opportunity to design something iconic, something which added to London - like the old red buses, black taxis, post boxes and, yes, the phone boxes. Things that characterise London, and thus things that people love London for. Here's what we got. They even put a picture of a bicycle on the side, just in case you're totally moronic.Talk about a wasted opportunity. They look like budget Anderson shelters. And what's the shelf life of one of those. Ten years, maybe? Can you see tourists seventy or eighty years from now queuing up for half an hour to get their photo taken next to one?Oh well.If you enjoyed reading this, please share it far and wide.Lots of things to share with you this week* Here ICYMI is this week's commentary:* Here is a piece from my comedy Substack about Prunella Scales, who died on Monday. It also contains an episode of a 1975 sitcom you've probably never heard of but in which she was absolutely brilliant. I urge you to watch it - you will thank me.* I made an appearance on Jeremy McKeown's new podcast, along with Tim Price, to talk gold.If you live in a Third World country, such as the UK, I urge you to own gold or silver. The bullion dealer I recommend is The Pure Gold Company. Pricing is competitive, quality of service is high. They deliver to the UK, the US, Canada and Europe or you can store your gold with them. What's happening to gold?  Is the so-called debasement trade over? Have we just seen another FOMO driven momentum bubble hit a blowout top?Is that it for another decade? Of course, a bubble is a bull market that we are not involved in, and from the outside, the recent frenzy over gold is just another case of market hysteria, right? Conspiracy theories like the dollar debasement are just, well, conspiracy theories, right? This week I invited two long standing and respected sound money advocates to share their thoughts on gold, where it came from, where it might be heading and why. We had a great chat.  Dominic Frisby has recently published his latest book, The Secret History of Gold: Myth, Money, Politics & Power and is also the man behind the excellent Flying Frisby Substack … Wealth manager Tim Price of Price Value Partners is also the author of Investing Through the Looking Glass, a rational guide to irrational financial markets.  We discussed why gold is valuable, why the gold price has recently been so strong and how investors should think about gold as an investment asset class in a world of government deficits, spiralling debt and uncertain geopoliticsBut as ever, none of what you are about to hear is any kind of advice; hopefully, it is informative and entertaining. Please take professional advice before investing a penny in these crazy markets. And with that, please enjoy my conversation with Dominic Frisby and Tim Price    Brought to you by Progressive Equity

Don't Quill the Messenger : Revealing the Truth of Shakespeare Authorship

Tim Price of Price Value Partners (Citywire's #1 fund YTD & over 12 months) feels that the performance of gold this year is less a gold story than a currency one. Freezing Russia's reserves torpedoed the US's funding powers when it has $38tn debt to fund. Since then, central banks have been disinvesting US debt in favour of gold bullion. The fiat currency jig is up. We know what a kilogram is, but no longer what a dollar is. Tim also discusses the malign effect of over-regulation, a fantastic book by Dominic Frisby about gold, how investors can tell when gold and silver have gone high enough and why you should not put your faith in debt and cash. This episode takes Jack Aldane to Manchester, where he meets two men who knew Martin Amis in a rather unique setting. Ian McGuire and John McAuliffe, both esteemed authors, are the co-founders of The Centre for New Writing at the University of Manchester. Not long after establishing this bastion of new literary talent in 2007, the pair began the search for ambassadors to endorse its mission and teach new entrants. In 2006-2007, Martin Amis joined as Iconic Professor of Creative Writing. He was followed in 2011-2012 by Colm Tóibín, who in turn was followed by Jeanette Winterson, who has filled the role since 2013. More recently, the centre has enjoyed the employment of Emma Clarke and Tim Price on its new screenwriting modules. As its website explains, the centre teaches people "how to write novels, short stories, poems, plays and screenplays", helping students "to read as a writer reads, offer seminars on form and theory, and on contemporary publishing".Ian and John recount their fondest, funniest memories of working alongside Amis, as well as the political climate after 9/11 that made him more of a political figure than he'd ever been before. This conversation captures an altogether different look at who Amis was. This is Martin Amis not so much performing for an audience as seeking to impart the best of what he knew to a new generation of writers. This was, as John describes, an "avuncular" Amis, then in his 50s and early 60s, still game for a pint down the local with his students, and with arguably some of his best work still ahead. And then there was Amis's surprising grasp of the 5 principles of Pilates. If you want understand what that's about, you know what to do.FOLLOW US ON TWITTER/ X: @mymartinamisFIND US ON YOUTUBE Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

We're back! Welll, I mean, we weren't like, gone, really, just not releasing shows. We released a show! And it's a part one of two, so that means we will have released two shows! Nothing will stop us now! One Halloween, long ago, one of our Crossover episodes got religion. Or rather, the discussion about the comic that we were covering with guests Tim Price and Sean, Podcast Host and Man of Knowledge, turned to that topic without having been planned that way, and we wound up having an informative and extremely interesting discussion. You can listen to that here: https://marriedwcomics.libsyn.com/mephisto-vs-the-podcasters-three-god-dracula-and-everything-else   It was well-received by our listeners and we were complimented on how civil and non-jujdemental we came across. Since this surprised us as much as anyone, we thought we'd have them on again for a (slightly) more structured discussion. In part one, we cover the Fantastic Four: Hereafter arc, and talk about death and resurrection in comics, how aspects of the story come across when filtered through the lenses of different faiths (Including how one story element is technically blasphemous for different reasons for different religions, but only if you're really really trying to see it that way.   In Part 2, we will have a no-questions forbidden roundtable on religion, in which we compare and contrast dogma, talk about how each of our religions thinks about the other ones, and all sorts of other things that you'd think would have led to huge arguments, but didn't!  We decided to split this episode, both due to the time, and content:  part one is more comics focused and part two is more religion focused. This will allow people that are not interested in one or the other topic the opportunity to focus on the one they want. After both are published, we may publish one that includes both, for all you completists out there.
