Coastal Learning and Stewardship Guest Maureen Dewire, Education Coordinator, Narragansett Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve Numerous animal species rely on salt marshes for nesting and breeding. Most of the fish and shellfish eaten in the United States, including herring, crabs and oysters, complete at least part of their life cycles in salt marsh estuaries. Over time, coastal development, introduction of invasive species, over-fishing, dams and climate change have led to a decline in the health of estuaries. The Narragansett Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, is one of 30 National Estuarine Research Reserves located around the country, established to provide long-term protection of coastal lands so they can serve as platforms for research, education and recreation. The Reserve's education sector strives to cultivate awareness, knowledge, and appreciation for Narragansett Bay's natural resources through a variety of place-based experiences for all ages. Education Coordinator Maureen Dewire shares stories about the Reserve's education programs and describes how she collaborates with others to teach about local research, impacts of climate change and land stewardship. Dewire grew up in Stonington, CT and made her way to North Carolina where she attended UNC-Wilmington, receiving her Bachelor's degree in Marine Biology and a Master's degree in Environmental Studies. She worked for a non-profit, Bald Head Island Conservancy, as the Director of Education and Senior Naturalist for 8 years where she was lucky enough to spend her days surveying beaches, kayaking through tidal creeks, and hiking in the maritime forest while delivering programs on sea turtles, alligators, birds and coastal ecosystems. Her love of New England brought her back in 2011 when she obtained the position of Education Coordinator position at the Reserve…and she hasn't looked back since! It is unclear how many undocumented immigrants live in Canada. Estimates range from 20,000 up to 500,000. Many of these are youth who were brought to Canada as young children and had no choice in the matter. Youth with precarious status or no status struggle to access public services like health care and education. Who are these undocumented youth, and does our country do enough to protect them? We ask: Sarah Pole, Childhood Arrivals Support & Advocacy (CASA) Program, Director at Justice for Children and Youth Legal Clinic; Akil Augustine, producer and host at MLSE and the Toronto Raptors, formerly undocumented; Arlo Kempf associate professor at Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto; and Stefan Enrique Joseph Kallikaden Youth and Access to Education Coordinator at FCJ Refugee Centre.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

She has been instrumental in the growth of this organization, guided by her faith. Alison shares her story of faith, particularly during difficult times. Transitioning from two incomes to none while having a newborn tested her faith, and she had to rely on the Lord's promise to care for her family. Additionally, when facing a health scare, Alison confronted hopelessness and chose to keep her eyes on God. It is often in the small things and moments of hope deferred that we grow the most. Her story is incredible, and you do not want to miss it.

Today, I'm excited to chat with Kylie Neagle about fostering curiosity and critical thinking on self-guided field trips for teachers and students.Kylie Neagle is the Education Coordinator at the Art Gallery of South Australia (AGSA) in Adelaide . With a small team and limited resources, catering to diverse student needs can be challenging. Volunteer Gallery Guides, though invaluable, cannot always provide guided tours. At the Art Gallery of South Australia in Adelaide (AGSA), this prompted a shift towards empowering teachers to lead self-guided tours, emphasising inquiry and engagement rather than content delivery. The aim is to discourage teachers from relying on booklets during gallery visits. When students solely focus on facts or information from wall texts, they miss out on the chance to discover artworks that genuinely pique their interest. And this is where the Curiosity Cards come into play. These fantastic cards are a set of 52 tools designed to enhance art engagement among students. Perfect for self-guided gallery visits, they ease the pressure on teachers and empower students to articulate their thinking. They promote 'long looking' and also foster critical thinking, creativity and confidence in discussing art, enriching the whole learning experience. In this Power of One episode we answer your submitted question. This week it is on what makes a great Education Co.
We all seem to be waiting for a "sci-fi" moment in our lives. Can we see what we don't believe? Can our attention be farmed? Can we see the color blue!? What will we manifest now that we are deeply questioning reality? We live in a hyper-reality of hallucinated information transposed by what's important for our survival. We commission a hallucination and show ourselves for tactical purposes. The eyes are a stage the mind palace uses to play a scene. Our real-world is received through the pineal needle in the center of our head. Our senses are here to only show us a reality our system can stomach. All of our vision and hearing is restricted by melanin, dopamine, and the emotional filters of the amygdala. Just as truth is suppressed in society, so is it suppressed by our amygdala. It is trying to protect us. This is how we come to learn about aperture. Aperture is the lensing of consciousness.
