26 - I didn't want to be a "Banquet Chaplain" with Jeffery Gallagher Rev. Jeffery Gallagher is a Chaplain for the Tolland Fire Department in Connecticut and he is the Lead Chaplain for the Connecticut State Police. When he was first considering becoming a chaplain, he told the fire chief that he wanted to be more than just the "banquet chaplain" who prays over the Christmas banquet. With no prior experience working with first responders he knew he needed some training and was able to take classes in CISM, Mental Health First Aid, QPR (as a trainer), IAFF Peer Support, IAFF Behavioral Health Awareness, Tactical Emergency Casualty Care, he took the Federation of Fire Chaplains Essentials course as well as the National Fallen Firefighters Line of Duty Death course. Today on the podcast we talk about his work as a Chaplain and how it has impacted him and those he works with. ABOUT REV. JEFFERY GALLAGHER I am an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ and have served churches in Maine and Connecticut for over 20 years. I am currently the Senior Pastor of the United Congregational Church of Tolland, Connecticut. As part of my work beyond the church, I serve as the Chaplain of the Tolland Fire Department and the Lead Chaplain for the Connecticut State Police. I have been in both of these Chaplaincy roles for about 7 years. In addition to my work as a Pastor and Chaplain, I am the Director of the Tolland TOPSoccer program (for children with special needs), a runner, and I have hiked 41 of the 48 mountains in New Hampshire's White Mountains that are over 4,000' tall (hoping to finish next year!). I am the author of the book "Wilderness Blessings: How Down Syndrome Reconstructed My Life and Faith" (2010). I have been married to my wife Kristen for almost 22 years and we have two children: Noah (18) and Jacob (15). The clothes we wear, the cars we drive, the planes we fly in, and the furniture in our homes. We may not often think about how these things are made. But that's not the case for Lenny Marano, Lectra president of Americas. “We're a strategic partner to those in the fashion, the furniture, and the automotive value streams,” Marano said. Lectra, a Paris-based technology company, acquired Gerber in 2021. In April, Lectra officially reopened a manufacturing facility in Tolland. The move came after outsourcing manufacturing to Massachusetts in 2018. “Since Lectra bought us, we know that we have a permanent home and we can make long term investments,” Marano said.

A viral video from Tolland has circulated in Connecticut, showing a violent street takeover. Chaz and AJ spoke with Tolland town manager, Brian Foley about the incident and how police are largely unable to do much to prevent these incidents. Doug from Tolland, a former police officer who served for 30 years, followed with more information on how things like street takeovers have become more and more common. A street takeover in Tolland has residents living in fear.
There's a nearly forgotten, 100-mile-long trail that brought the founders of Connecticut from the Massachusetts Bay Colony nearly 400 years ago. The gorgeous and rustic Old Connecticut Path runs through northeast Connecticut's so-called “forgotten corner” in Windham County (including the towns of Thompson, Woodstock, Eastford, Ashford, Willington, Tolland, Vernon, Manchester, and Hartford). Much of the trail is still in its natural state and the Massachusetts man who has rediscovered and publicized the trail's existence, Jason Newton, thinks it should be preserved for future generations before it's too late.
Movie guy Joe Meyers has nothing but excellent things to say about John Wick 4. Joe called in to talk to Chaz and AJ about the non-stop action, which feels fresh even over a longer runtime. He insists it is best viewed in the theater. (0:00) Comedian Matt Lopes is a self-proclaimed "movie buff," and yet has never seen a movie made before 1995. Chaz and AJ invited him in studio at 6 AM to watch "The Breakfast Club" for the first time, and then share his immediate review live on the air. Does it hold up to today's standards? Plus, AJ samples some of Vince Berry's homemade hot sauce, by dunking an Oreo cookie in and taking a bite. (12:23) Former Hartford Police Detective Brian Foley was extremely impressed with the swift and decisive action taken by Nashville police in subduing the school shooter. Brian is also the town manager in Tolland, which very recently had to deal with a live broadcast feed getting hacked with pornography, so he shared an update on that investigation. (29:43) Dumb Ass News - Judge Lisa Wexler had come in studio to talk about a specific story, but Vince's home made hot sauce was too compelling. He and Matt Lopes both sampled it live on the air, again by dunking an Oreo cookie into the sauce. (39:03)

ComEDY star/Author-Barry Friedman Commentary by Roger Homefield! ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Theresa Contaxis is an author, reverend, and student for life. She recently published The Littlest Sailboat: A Journey of the Soul (IPBBooks), an inspiring tale of how one finds their place in this world and calls upon faith for guidance. Contaxis suffered from loneliness and depression while pregnant with her third child. It was then that she found herself on a formal spiritual journey, attending a spiritual retreat, EMMAUS. The retreat was a defining moment in her life that forever changed her direction. A mother of three, Contaxis studied under a nun, multiple energy workers, James Twyman, and two shamans for two years before becoming a Reverend at All Faiths Seminary International. She has studied mysticism from various spiritual leaders. Her writings reflect her spiritual evolution. “It is important to laugh as you learn and grow,” she says. “I am grateful the Spirit teaches me through humor. I have lots of examples of that. For those that are at the end of the rope, there is always hope. For those who feel unloved, that they are loved, loving and lovable. This applies to all people. Especially those who feel they have led a ‘bad' life. They are loved. And underneath the actions that we see, our spirits are always connected to God, Source, Divine, Ralph whatever you want to call it.” She graduated from Hartt School of Music and earned an MBA from University of Hartford. She worked in finance for a short time, and then stayed home to raise her family. Theresa resides in Tolland, Massachusetts.

Connecticut farms have experienced extreme drought and floods, finding it increasingly difficult to prepare for alternating extremes. While 2021 brought floods that devastated many Connecticut crops, farmers are again dealing with drought this summer. On Friday, federal officials declared New London and Windham counties "primary natural disaster areas" due to drought, while Hartford, Middlesex and Tolland counties are designated as "contiguous counties." Farmers interested in applying for assistance can contact their local Farm Service Agency office. This hour, we hear from local producers, including from Provider Farm in Salem. State Department of Agriculture Commissioner Bryan Hurlburt also joins. Plus, Long Island Soundkeeper and fish and wildlife biologist Bill Lucey has observed changes in fish populations in fresh- and saltwater, and the habitats where they live. "Extreme weather events impact wildlife in many diverse ways," says a spokesperson for the state's Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, noting impacts on flora and fauna from migratory birds and insects to berries and acorns. "If it's too wet, nests can flood and wash away; if it is too dry, food and water can be harder to find close by. More frequent intense storms can topple nest trees, erode stream banks, and create many other habitat changes that challenge wildlife." A Connecticut state trooper who is a native of Poland got quite the surprise while responding to an SUV with a flat tire Wednesday — a passenger in the vehicle happened to be former Polish President Lech Walesa. State police said Trooper Lukasz Lipert arrived to the call in Tolland and was greeted by Walesa, who had spoken in Hartford on Tuesday as part of his U.S. tour advocating for aid for refugees who have fled Ukraine during the war with Russia. Lipert, 35, who came to the U.S. when he was 18, told The Hartford Courant that he spoke with Walesa in Polish about their homeland and the anti-communist movement Walesa helped lead. “It was definitely a great opportunity to meet the man who had a voice during those times,” Lipert said. “It was definitely a great experience." Walesa, 78, led the nationwide Solidarity movement in Poland in the 1980s that eventually toppled Poland's communist leaders through an election in 1989. He received a Nobel Prize in 1983 and served as Poland's first popularly elected president from 1990 to 1995. He is a strong critic of Poland's current right-wing government. A vehicle service worker changed the tire and Walesa continued on his way down I-84. One of his next stops is an event in Boston on Monday. This article was provided by The Associated Press.

Enlisting the help of contractors and his former boss at the state Department of Administrative Services, Konstantinos Diamantis mounted a fast and furious defense in the summer of 2020 against an accusatory memo produced by the building trade unions ahead of a meeting with Gov. Ned Lamont. The unsigned memo accused Diamantis of using “fear mongering and threats” to engineer an emergency declaration that fast-tracked the replacement of a structurally unsound school in Tolland without competitive bidding — then provided the town with bid specs, a contract and a suggested construction manager. Reporter Mark Pazniokas talks to host Ebong Udoma about the impact of the memo.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Shan Riggs is running across the country. Having a background in marketing and branding, Shan came to the east coast to work for the Hartford Marathon Foundation, being able to work remotely out of his van. He is taking his unemployment opportunity to try to do something positive in this pandemic. No races this year, meant Shan was out of a job, had a lot of extra time, and decided to do something meaningful. He will be raising money for Food Share, the regional food bank serving Connecticut's Hartford and Tolland counties, where 118,000 people struggle with hunger. Shan ran his first ultra in 2006, the Chicago Lakes 50M. Before that he ran his bucket list marathon and wiped his hands of that. A few years later, he ran Dean Karnazes book, Ultramarathon Man...and like many of us, that gateway drug got him. A few years after that first 50, Shan went back and won it. His first 100M, 6 months after the first 50, took him 33 hours. He again went back to that same race a few years later and it took him 19 hours. Obviously, the longer the race, the more competitive Shan seems to be. In 2008 Shan ran almost 200 miles for Medals for Mettle, an organization that refurbishes old racing medals and gives them to ill children for showing their toughness amidst sickness and tragedy. This experience showed him what his body was capable of and how people can really do crazy, unbelievable things. He also discovered he loves running for charity. He looked around wondering what he could do to make something good, to inspire positive change. Enter: the run across the country. Being at a transition point in life and always wanting to run across the country, Shan figured “if not now, when?” and the dream started to become a reality. Right now, Shan and crew chief Callie are driving across America to begin in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco CA, and ending on the shores of Connecticut. In this episode, Ellie and Shan discuss van life, being a nomad, running high mileage and having goals. Ellie asks Shan what he is running from, where he finds a social life and his successful trajectory in ultrarunning. Shan has been in the sport for almost 20 years, and has seen many trends come and go. They discuss barefoot running and staying relevant in the sport. Shan then explains the plan for the journey which you can follow here: Website: https://www.shanrunsacrossamerica.com/ Donate to the cause: https://www.shanrunsacrossamerica.com/donate IG: @shanriggs2100 UltraSignUp: https://ultrasignup.com/results_participant.aspx?fname=Sha

Dozens of Connecticut homes have been hoisted off the ground as the state helps pay homeowners to repair ruined concrete foundations. This hour, we check in on the crumbling foundations crisis that is impacting homes and homeowners. We talk with the Hartford Courant journalist behind a yearlong series on Connecticut’s ruined concrete foundations. We hear from a Tolland homeowner whose basement is being rebuilt with assistance from the state, and we ask a state legislator who represents towns affected by the crisis: what does Connecticut need to do to further support residents whose homes have been ruined? Crumbling foundations is not just an issue locally. We check with a homeowner in Ireland, where residents face a similar problem with crumbling concrete.
