After witnessing a series of moments on my recent travels left me gutted.People standing on coral. Ignoring signs that asked not to disturb nesting wildlife.Disrespecting sacred sites with noise, ego, and entitlement. This episode and letter is a call to all of us who travel to remember that we are guests. That we're not entitled to the land, the wildlife, or the culture. That not everything needs to hold personal meaning for it to deserve our care and respect.I speak about the pain of watching people override warnings and traditions. About how easy it is to forget we're not the only important species on this planet. And how sometimes, staying on the path literally and metaphorically is the most respectful thing we can do.This episode is a love letter to the earth, to those who hold sacred traditions, and to the animals just trying to nest, rest, and live. And it ends with the Tiaki Promise a beautiful, grounded commitment to travel with heart, care, and consideration.“To care for land, sea and nature. Treading lightly and leaving no trace. To travel safely, showing care and consideration for all. And to respect culture, travelling with an open heart and mind.”This isn't about shaming. In this episode, we dive into the radical theories of parapsychologist D. Scott Rogo, who suggested that many hauntings, abductions, and even poltergeist phenomena might not come from outside forces, but from within ourselves. Could we be unknowingly manifesting our own paranormal experiences? And what if some forms of mental illness or multiple personality disorder are actually cases of spirit obsession or full-blown possession? We also journey through the hidden chambers and forbidden tunnels of a world-famous institution, where ancient relics and human remains seem to stir with unrest. Staff and psychics alike report ghostly voices, locked doors opening on their own, and encounters with entities that cling to artifacts like shadows. RUNDOWN Mitch and Hotshot Scott kick off Episode 340 with an emotional twist — Hotshot is moving from Snoqualmie to Sammamish, leaving behind years of memories, including the house where his daughter was raised. The two reflect on the sentimentality of leaving home and Scott's surprising inability to cry… except maybe after a World Series loss. The conversation pivots to the 340 area code — the U.S. Virgin Islands — leading to a trivia-filled celebration of Kelsey Grammer, Tim Duncan, Sugar Ray Seales, and Dave Matthews. Mitch connects the dots between obscure sports facts and Seattle's ties to musical legends, including a memorable story about Dave Matthews' tour bus incident. Steve Phillips joins to break down Cal Raleigh's MVP case. Raleigh's home run pace, elite defense, and the grueling Seattle travel schedule all contribute to a narrative that may rival Aaron Judge's candidacy — if Cal keeps up the pace and the M's stay in the playoff hunt. From landing the record-setting Nike and Titleist deals to being fired over the phone with no closure, Norton shares never-before-heard behind-the-scenes drama from his memoir Rainmaker. Mariners No-Table with Brady Farkas and Joe Doyle returns. The guys react to a rollercoaster road trip, Joe's doomsday texts, and Cal's MVP surge. At the Rewilding Justin assures Kirsty that having his expensive Italian shoes ruined is a small price to pay for seeing Lilian laugh again, admitting he can be pretty selfish sometimes. Justin's pleased the planning for summer rewilding activities is well in hand, but then Tony appears, furious that the Longhorns are being allowed to wander freely without fences, but no-one told him. Kirsty and Justin smooth Tony's hackles, assuring him they did tell him, then show him the GPS app they've had installed to keep track of the cattle. Tony still feels he's been left out of the loop. Treading on eggshells around Tony's grief Justin explains it wasn't deliberate and Kirsty apologises, before Tony heads off to organise the Goat Gymkhana. Justin then admits to Kirsty he's planning something but won't say what it is. Alice turns up at Woodbine Cottage where Fallon tells her Harrison didn't come back at all, after she told him it wasn't worth driving all that way for four hours together at most. Fallon then confesses she doesn't actually miss him. Having the freedom to do whatever she likes is simply too lovely – and in the end Harrison never knew about the party anyway. Fallon feels bad, but everyone who came really enjoyed themselves. Alice tells Fallon her fears about Martha, but Fallon agrees with Chris: Martha is a bright shiny button who's simply developing at her own pace. Alice thinks her life is too focused on Martha, while Fallon feels she's drifting away from Harrison and worries about their future together.
Hey Team, hope you’re great! I’m being an awesome son for a day or two, so I thought we’d revisit this episode that I recorded a while back, which was really well received, and I think it might be timely for some at the moment. *Treading water. Spinning our metaphoric wheels. Stuck in a Groundhog Day of mediocrity, dissatisfaction and frustration. Wasted time, talent and energy. Thinking, habits, behaviours, rituals and fears that keep us trapped in a prison of our own making. This episode is a workshop (of sorts) about stepping up, breaking through and getting unstuck. Formula E returned to Miami this year for the first time in over a decade, and Hankook's Formula E GEN3 Evo iON Race tires once again took center stage, both on and off the track. In this episode of What's Treading, we take you inside Homestead-Miami Speedway to show how Hankook's tires handled the intense demands of all-electric racing. These tires helped cars stay grounded while accelerating from 0-62 mph in just 1.86 seconds. The tires had to deliver extreme grip, endurance, and efficiency across every lap, and each team could only use two sets of tires for the entire race.Hankook is using what it learns here on the track to build those same qualities into the next generation of iON passenger tires for EV drivers everywhere. How Hankook Formula E Tire Data Shapes StrategyAt the track, we spoke with Manfred Sandbichler, Hankook's Director of Motorsport. He explained how Formula E data drives Hankook's ongoing R&D strategy. We also caught up with Rob Williams, President of Hankook Tire North America, to learn how events like this help build dealer trust and product confidence. From tight dogleg corners to beach-ready floaties at the Hankook X Formula E Tube Shop, the weekend offered more than racing. It showcased Hankook Formula E tires and their expanding role in the EV tire market.
You learn a lot about a tire when you push it to its edge — and even more when you're the one doing the pushing. That's exactly what Kumho Tire had in mind when they invited a group of dealers and journalists to Atlanta Motorsports Park to test the new Kumho Ecsta UHP tires.Kumho showcased three new products: the Ecsta Sport All-Season, Ecsta Sport, and Ecsta Sport S. But these weren't just lined up for a walkaround. We drove them in conditions designed to highlight their strengths and determine where each tire fits in the competitive UHP market. Wet skidpad sessions, an autocross circuit, and full-track lead-follow laps gave us a real-world feel for how each tire performs.Distinct Performance for Different DriversEach of the Kumho Ecsta UHP tires showcased performance sweet spots. The Ecsta Sport All-Season gripped confidently in wet conditions. Meanwhile, the Ecsta Sport delivered crisp, fast response in dry turns. The Sport S took high-speed corners with control and ease. Kumho didn't just check boxes — they dialed in each tire for a specific type of driver.Kumho Ecsta UHP Tires: Tech That Matches the DriveThe technology inside each tire is what drives each tire's distinct feel. Kumho equipped the Ecsta All-Season with a "High Grip" compound and interlocking sipes for year-round traction. The Ecsta Sport steps up with Kumho's "Innovative Compound Technology." That includes high-dispersible silica and performance resins for sharper cornering and braking. The Sport S, meanwhile, goes all-in on grip. Kumho gave it an aggressive tread pattern and advanced compound mix for control at track speeds.Advanced Testing and Development Methods for the Kumho Ecsta UHP TiresDuring the day-long event, we had the chance to chat with Andy Wallner, a tire development engineer at Kumho, who explained how the team used virtual modeling and AI tools to fine-tune each tire's compound and tread design. “Virtual modeling helps us improve our development cycles, so we're able to develop tires in a shorter time frame,” Wallner said. “[Kumho was] able to get to the target and improve the performance of these tires better than we would have without these methods. [Virtual modeling and AI-testing] doesn't fully replace traditional tire testing and development. However, doing that virtual work upfront helps Kumho design tires more efficiently.”Check out the video above to see how Tire Review Senior Editor Christian Hinton channels his inner video-game driver to test each tire's capability -- and have fun doing it.Looking for more What's Treading? You've just celebrated your 25th wedding anniversary two weeks ago and your 60th birthday four weeks ago. Life seems to be going along fine until one ordinary day out of the blue your husband tells you ‘I'm seeing someone else'. I recently interviewed Jo Peck, author of Suddenly Single at Sixty for a Women Living Well After 50 Podcast episode. She is an intelligent woman, former business owner for over 20 years of a successful ad agency ‘Working Girls Advertising' and also born in the same year as me. Her book is about how she recovered from those four words and regained her life. She writes about the good times in her marriage with travel, adventure and good friends. But after the ‘declaration', on reflection, Jo realised that it was not good all the time and she was doing most of the compromising. This is not a pity party book. It's about Jo carrying on in a new direction, taking risks and being open to new opportunities. Treading into the unknow waters of online dating at 60 after being in a relationship for more than 25 years. She doesn't sugar coat the bad times she had – the self-doubts which plague us after this type of experience but I found the book funny at times, sad, angry at others but mostly a woman finding her way and regaining her ‘sense of self'.This would be a great holiday read over the summer and then a perfect introduction for the Podcast episode. Put it on you list of 2025 reads.Watch the VideoConnect with Jo PeckJo Peck grew up in Healesville, Victoria. She worked in advertising for thirty-five years, co-running her own ad agency, Working Girls Advertising, for twenty of those years. Treading New Paths: Jax & Bard's Shoemaking MasteryIn the heart of Gray, Maine, a small town known for its scenic beauty and quiet charm, a unique brand has emerged, one that combines age-old shoemaking traditions with modern sensibilities. That brand is Jax & Bard, a name synonymous with high-quality, handcrafted footwear. Whether you're a connoisseur of custom shoes or simply someone who values craftsmanship, Jax & Bard offers more than just shoes—they offer a story, a legacy, and a testament to the enduring art of shoemaking. The Origins of Jax & BardFounded by Jackie Lindstedt—the company started with a love for shoe design and craft as well as quality and sustainability. Jackie was driven by a desire to create shoes that not only looked stunning but also felt exceptional to wear. Jax & Bard shoes are designed with a focus on comfort, durability, and, most importantly, craftsmanship. Both Jax and Bard bring a personal touch to every pair of shoes they create, infusing their distinct styles into their work while honoring the legacy of traditional shoemaking techniques but also making the process more modern and sustainable. Their commitment to quality is evident in every stitch and the fabric she uses is unique as she can craft a custom piece for her clients.Handcrafted from Start to FinishWhat sets Jax & Bard apart from other footwear brands is their dedication to the art of handcrafting. From the moment a customer places an order to the time they slip their feet into their new shoes, the experience is steeped in artistry. Jackie carefully and strategically prints out a design onto sustainable fabric and then places the fabric on clogs or an espadrille base sourced by a local company. The design process is highly personalized. Jax and Bard work closely with each client to ensure the shoes not only fit perfectly but also reflect the wearer's style. Each pair is made-to-order, meaning no two shoes are exactly the same, and this level of bespoke care is what makes Jax & Bard shoes a unique treasure for those who appreciate the value of true craftsmanship.Every step in the creation of a Jax & Bard shoe is done with precision and care. The process includes hand-stitching, custom fitting, and finishing techniques that ensure a level of comfort and durability not often seen in mass-produced footwear. The result is a pair of shoes that don't just serve as a piece of clothing but as an investment in craftsmanship, style, and longevity.A Commitment to Local CraftsmanshipThough Jax & Bard has expanded its reach beyond Gray, Maine, the company remains deeply rooted in its local community. They take pride in their artisanal approach and in supporting the local economy by sourcing materials and services from nearby suppliers whenever possible. The brand is also committed to sustainable practices, ensuring that its shoes are built to last, thereby reducing waste and the environmental footprint of fast fashion. She even takes leftover fabrics and turns them into earrings. The Future of Jax & Bard: Crafting New PathsAs the company grows, Jax & Bard remains committed to its core values. They continue to build upon their legacy by expanding their collections and experimenting with new designs and techniques while staying true to their roots. The world of custom footwear is evolving, and Jax & Bard is at the forefront of this evolution, bringing old-world craftsmanship into the modern age. She is even considering diving into slippers which is a huge passion of hers. But while the future is exciting, Jax & Bard hasn't lost sight of what makes their shoes special: the personal connection they have with their customers. Each pair of shoes is more than just a product; it's a collaboration between the maker and the wearer, ensuring a perfect fit, both physically and stylistically.Discovering Jax & BardTo explore their collections or learn more about the artisans behind Jax & Bard, visit https://jaxandbard.shoes/. Whether you're based in Maine or beyond, there's no better time to step into a pair of shoes that are as unique as you are.If you enjoyed this Makers of the USA episode, please leave a rating and review on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or Facebook. What can tire industry history from 30 years ago tell us about today's trends? In this episode of What's Treading, Editor David Sickels takes a nostalgic look at the Tire Review 1995 issue. We explore '90s ads, timeless business advice, and emerging tire technologies that still resonate today. Ads in the Tire Review 1995 issue were all about showcasing bold, text-heavy designs and tire manufacturer-dealer partnerships. We also encounter a fair share of customer service and market trend articles, demonstrating how much of the 1995 business advice still applies. Whether you're reminiscing about the tire business in the '90s or learning timeless fundamentals about the tire industry, this episode delivers on both fronts. Plus, we review some fantastic 1990s computing software that was used to show customers what a new set of wheels would look like on their vehicle. You might be familiar with it if you sold wheels around this time. Watch the video above to see what we thought was important three decades back, as well as a look at historic ads from Falken Tire, Maxxis, Mitsubishi, Jetzon Tire, Reliable Tire Co., Firestone, Mastercraft Tires, Keystone, Telstar, Raybestos, Galaxy Tire, Mopar, and Hankook Tire. Between dealing with inventory, competition, or adapting to retailer and consumer needs, there's a lot for a tire wholesale distributors to deal with. Hi Team, up to my blurry eyeballs today (Saturday as I type) in PhD writing, so today we're revisiting an episode from a while back, that was very well received. See you on the morrow with a freshie. The off-roading tire segment has seen a lot of growth since the pandemic, and it's only going to get bigger in the coming years. According to SEMA's 2023 Future Trends report, U.S. off-roading and oversized tires rake in around $2 billion annually, and the light-truck segment in the U.S. is estimated to account for close to 80% of all new-vehicle sales by 2027. Sailun Tire Americas is hopping on the off-roading trend with its RoadX brand, recently releasing the RoadX RX Quest R/T tire. Made for trucks and SUVs – and including on- and off-road capabilities, the tire comes in over 40 sizes, a 45,000 mile warranty and even a 3PMS rating for severe winter certification. In this episode of What's Treading, Sailun had Tire Review out to Horseshoe Bay, Texas to test the off-roading capabilities of the RoadX RX Quest R/T. Sailun's manager of PLT in Canada, Dwayne Sawyer, gave us the inside scoop into the tire's development process and the rigorous testing Sailun does on this and all of its tires. There's running a business, and then there's running a family business – and as it turns out, many running a tire business are in the latter. Building a company is difficult on its own, and adding family dynamics into the mix can throw a serious wrench into traditional notions of what qualifies as success in terms of leadership, expectations, value, accountability, legacy, and a whole lot more. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it does bring its own set of challenges.Of course, a business built upon family values comes with a host of huge positives as well, like a company culture strengthened by incredibly deep roots. At RNR Tire Express, those positives really shine, encapsulated by the relationship between Founder Larry Sutton and his son and CEO, Adam Sutton. “We have an instant baked-in trust that usually takes years to develop… when you're working off the same set of core values, it makes it a lot easier,” Adam says. In this episode of What's Treading with Tire Review, Larry and Adam take us through their respective entrepreneurial journeys, from Larry's early days in the rent-to-own industry to the founding of RNR Tire Express, which initially focused on custom wheels. The duo shares how they made the shift to concentrate on passenger tires, growing the business into a nationwide chain with 200 stores in 30 states, and gives an honest and insightful look at the dynamics of running a family business. All-weather tires are becoming a popular choice for drivers, particularly as colder weather approaches. According to the U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association, there is a strong market opportunity within this segment, which saw 6.1 million replacement tires sold in 2023. This trend is not new to tire manufacturers like Goodyear, which is capitalizing on the demand with the release of its new Assurance WeatherReady 2 all-weather tire.Recently launched in 58 sizes (with more to come) the tire offers a 60,000-mile tread life limited warranty. The WeatherReady 2 will eventually replace the original WeatherReady tire, introduced in 2017, as Goodyear plans to phase out the older model in most sizes. In this episode of What's Treading, Goodyear provided Tire Review an opportunity to test the WeatherReady 2 firsthand, and Goodyear's product marketing manager, Andrew Lau, provided insights into the attributes of the new tire. How big is the knowledge gap between you and your customers when it comes to the difference between all-season and all-weather tires in your region? When you consider all the aspects surrounding the tire sale – from driver demands to technological differences to price to simple vocabulary befuddlement – it's easy to understand why your customers are confused.According to Chris Han, Senior Product and Channel Marketing Manager at Kumho Tire, one of the biggest points of confusion stems from the similarity in terminology, as many consumers assume "all-season" means the tire will perform in all weather conditions. "Many consumers think all-season actually means all-weather... but they're not necessarily meant for severe weather conditions," Han says.On this episode of What's Treading with Tire Review, Han emphasizes the evolving landscape of tire technology and consumer preferences, and introduces the Kumho Solus 4S HA32 tire, which was originally launched as an all-weather product but has since been repositioned as a next-generation all-season tire. Han also shares insights into the trade-offs tire manufacturers must consider when developing these products and practical maintenance tips for tire dealers and consumers alike. This episode is sponsored by Kumho Tire.
