Bessie Coleman was born on January 26, 1892. She achieved historic milestones as the first African-American woman to obtain both a pilot's license and an international aviation license. At the age of 18, Coleman utilized her savings to attend the Oklahoma Colored Agricultural and Normal University, completing one term before financial constraints forced her to return home. In 1915, she relocated to Chicago, working as a manicurist and absorbing tales from World War I pilots. Driven by a determination to fly, she journeyed to Paris, where she earned the distinction of being the first African-American woman with an international aviation license and the world's inaugural female aviation pilot. Known for her daring feats, Coleman tragically perished in 1926 at the age of 34 when a plane malfunction led to a fatal crash. Meet Sharon Hines; CEO, investor, community developer and owner of one of the very few Comedy Clubs owned in the United States by an African American Woman. Born in the innovative city of Dayton, Ohio, raised in the Central German city of Frankfurt, Germany, Sharon spent her childhood, up until the age of 15 years old, learning culture that was much different from that of the United States. Being from a military background she has had the opportunity to see many places, and learn the trades of her personality. Very bright. Full of life, motivation, compassion, love for her community, and pride in giving more than she receives. With 32 years of business as an Entrepreneur, she has successfully paved the way for her business to thrive and become a well known establishment worldwide. Although she has endured many successes with events, and clients, the most successful moment she is most proud of is signing the mortgage to own her own property, a dream she has had for many years, in the winter of 2022. Over coming obstacles since has been the driving force in everyday life, generating the income to consistently service the community, and keep her business open for business. Growth is the model, and to help is the goal. With so many ideas and creative plans for the future, zoning in on community, what drives it, what helps it, what hurts it, has Sharon at the peak of her Entrepreneurial endeavors. Being starstruck typically involves feeling impressed or awed by a celebrity or someone famous. On the other hand, being obsessed implies a more intense and unhealthy fixation on someone or something, often to the detriment of one's well-being.
My good friend Denise Burgess, a tremendous leader in the construction industry and recent inductee into the National Academy of Construction, joined the Greatness Podcast to talk about her 30-year journey as an African American woman in the industry. Denise candidly shares her experience of frequently being the only woman of color in the room. "Oh, did your dad just send you here to take the notes?". Denise shares a deeply personal story about the "personal assault" of a less-than-flattering story in the Denver Post and the ensuing 1200 audits of her project that found no wrongdoing, a powerful story of resilience and staying grounded in your values. I can empathize with Denise's experience as constantly having to prove herself, and appreciate her story of one group saying that they thought "Dennis" was showing up and asking Denise if she needed to call someone to negotiate the contract. Why is it important for you to listen to this podcast regardless of your industry? Because listening to different people's experiences creates empathy and exposes us to the unconscious bias we ALL have. Two of the many pieces of advice Denise shares - "be true to yourself" and "really hear people" - and great stories of allyship.

Today I sit down with Simone Missick an actress truly led by spirit. This kick-ass woman is no stranger to walking in faith and trusting the process. When she booked her breakout role of Misty Knight in Marvel's Luke Cage for Netflix she had only a handful of co-stars to her resume. She admits to struggling with self-doubt about choosing a life path as an actor. Her focus is on her inner journey over the business. This interview is a refreshingly honest and vulnerable look at what it means to literally walk into one's vision and be a light for others. Simone leads CBS' ALL RISE which is currently the most popular new network show of 2019! She is the first African American woman to lead a series on CBS, and it's been a huge huge hit for the network. She will also soon be seen opposite Anthony Mackie in the second season of Netflix's hit sci-fi anthology drama ALTERED CARBON. The More Sibyl Podcast Presents: 집으로 돌아가는 길 찾기| On Finding Home: An African American Woman's Journey To Reconnect With Her Roots In Africa: Episode 4 (2023)In this week's episode, I interviewed Suzette Vearnon, an author and speaker helping women over 40 redefine what makes them enough in life and love on their terms. This episode was about tracing her roots. Growing up in the Jim Crow South, Suzette Vearon experienced the deculturalization and assimilation of dark-skinned people, leading to feelings of unworthiness and self-perception. The sudden loss of her last parent, turning 63, and a looming pandemic caused turmoil inside her, leading her to seek her identity. These events, coupled with watching Marvel's Black Panther, Suzette was inspired to trace her African roots, where she discovered she was 99% African, with a significant part of that DNA being Esan and Mende. By connecting with the richness of these cultures, Suzette has transcended the limiting definitions she's been taught as a Black person in America. She now aims to offer pathways to mental and emotional freedom as a life coach and relationship solutionist, especially for Black women. Suzette believes connecting with her roots has been a crucial part of her journey to understanding her worth and enoughness. During our conversation, we delved into the various obstacles she has encountered since childhood and how she overcame them. Our discussion ended on an empowering note emphasizing the significance of discovering one's identity and realizing they are sufficient and will always be so.
Holy, Maundy Thursday ❤Come, Beloved...Let us pray together. In this prayer we are reminded of Jesus' humility and confidence in God alone. Jesus came to serve not to be served Matthew 20:26-28;Increase our faith Lord in the name of Jesus Christ.
Hang in there, Beloved.Remember you are seen and loved just as you are with all of your mistakes: we all are. Here is a prayer for us.God loves us most and will not leave us comfortless: John 14:18.Reach out if you need to prayer together ❤
YOU - The Master Entrepreneur - A Guide to True Greatness with Stan Hustad
Like you most of the other stuff that comes flying through and often times is spam or otherwise I just ignore but the title of this post by a guy named Alex Foster caught my attention when it said, who is the greatest person that history has forgotten?..,, this lady's death saved literally billions of people from becoming crippled limitless in dead. Well I bit on the title and clicked and I'm glad I did, almost providential because there was a story of just that a young African-American woman by the name of Henrietta Lacks who unfortunately had died of cervical cancer as a young woman but the rest of the story is that in her death the title of literally billions of people from becoming... It's probably true. The story was deeply moving and really touched my spirit and heart but I couldn't get over the thought, why is this the first time in my long life and even as a teacher and a historian that I had never heard of this story before. Well I have now and I'm grateful and so for the few of you who will click I'd like to share the story with you too.
Lost Highways: Dispatches from the Shadows of the Rocky Mountains
Cathay Williams was an African American Woman who was conscripted to work as General Philip Sheridan's cook during the Civil War. When the war was over, she wanted to join one of the all-Black Army Regiments that later became known as the “Buffalo Soldiers." But women weren't allowed to serve at that time. So she put on men's clothes, changed her name to William Cathay, and spent the next three years as a Buffalo Soldier in the "Wild West." Her story could easily serve as a western myth – a portrait of so-called frontier courage in the face of insurmountable odds. But we look more closely at the way her choice to live as a Black male soldier also reflect the extremely limited options available to Black women at the time.

On this episode I chatted with Sharina Perry about her company Utopia Plastix. There are few times in live where you meet someone that really is changing the whole world. Sharina is on the verge of that change. Sharina grew up in the south and saw firsthand what it meant to be an “African American Woman” before she knew what it meant to be a “Business Woman”. Now as the founder of Utopia Plastix, she is on a mission to make sure “minority business” is something to be infinitely proud of. She continues to be driven by personal accounts of minority farmers and business owners who have been impacted by land misuse and economic hardship. Sharina has a goal to help multi-generational minority and disadvantaged families and their communities. As a teenager, Sharina was inspired to imagine something better. A perfect world where people worked together, supported, and relied on each other. When faced with challenges, she said to herself and anyone else who would listen, “If only we could live in Utopia.” Sharina and her skilled team of experts were intentional and relentless in creating “Utopia Plastix.” The most durable, natural and affordable plastic alternative currently in the market. The crops used to make Utopia Plastix are USDA approved, absorb carbon at 4-5 times the rate of trees, and actually replenish the earth with valuable nutrients. This breakthrough alternative is what the global market is looking for to leverage the practical benefits of plastic in responsible ways. Utopia Plastix enhances our customers' brands because it offers the most durable and affordable plant-based plastic available, supports farmers by providing them a new bumper crop, supports companies' minority inclusion initiatives, and supports the public's desire to simply do the right thing. Utopia Plastix invites you to join its mission of moving the world closer to Utopia. https://utopiaplastix.com/our-story/ www.instagram.com/sharinaperry_utopia This episode is presented by the Oklahoma Hall of Fame.
