This conversation has lived rent free in my mind since it was recorded in 2022. Talk about someone with vision, creativity, discipline, and pure talent. Yulin Kuang (Hulu's "Dollface", the CW's "I Ship It") is now a bestselling author with her debut novel, How to End a Love Story, which was Reese Witherspoons' May 2024 Book Club Pick, Target's April 2024 Book Club Pick and Book of the Month April 2024 pick (and that's barely the tip of the iceberg for her). This episode focuses on the film + TV industry and highlights Yulin's journey, her thoughts on dealing with rejection, imposter syndrome and going after what you want in life. *The audio is a little glitchy the first 5 mins of this episode but I promise it stops begging for attention Get 10% off my favorite organic juice - Suja. Lola reached out and connected with me via Stage32.com, a filmmaker's website that brings people in the industry together from all around the world that grew tremendously during the Covid lockdown. Lola is showcasing her first feature film 'PURPLE BEATZ' -- written and directed by her! She is truly motivated and talented-just check out her movie now available on demand @PrimeVideo -premiering today on October 25th, 2022 during the eclipse season. After taking a hiatus to start a family, Lola restarted her film career. Her first short 'HUSH" -- won an award at the Cannes Film Festival -pushing her to commit to her talents after such a rewarding supportive festival environment. However, the road towards a feature film was still elusive after the Cannes Film Festival award. Being at home with her kids didn't stop Lola from writing late at night as she still had many stories to tell. As the pandemic hit the world, Lola found other filmmakers also still wanted to make movies! Lola's networking and collaboration with others on previous short films helped her to find a crew to begin filming again. Through her tenacity and vision, Lola has created a truly entertaining movie depicting the 1990's London underground music scene known as drum&bass. Lola casts her stars for the movie and they have now been nominated for best actors at the I WILL TELL Festival in Florida this pass week! Mo O'Connell (Actor/Screenwriter/Director) is "In The Room" with 52 Jokers Wild. S3E12 In this weeks episode, our guest is Mo O'Connell, actor, screenwriter, and director who talks about how she gets her films across the finishing line and has the drive to succeed. Each project is a labour of love and seems to cause all the pains and heartache any mother would go through bringing her baby into this world. Some willingly but others throw tantrums stubbornly resisting. Mo always takes on the challenge to bring her art to life and won't let money stand in the way. If you wait around for the money nothing would get done. Mo's talent is highly sought after as can be see through the number of short films she has created and the feature films produced or in production. It was a privilege to have the chance to chat with Mo about her passion for filmmaking and the many areas she has tackled to ensure her films arrive to their target audience. #FILMACADEMY #FILMFUNDING #FILMPODCAST
James Webber (Screenwriter/Director/Producer) is "In The Room" with 52 Jokers Wild. S3E11 In this weeks episode, our guest is James Webber, screenwriter, director and producer who is gaining success with his first feature film, Sorority. Garvin and I managed to get some great insights into James filmmaking process and how he managed to develop his feature film based on an earlier short film he had been successful with. Key themes in the discussion related to how he worked with investors and the motivation for offering funds. The hardest part of any film is trying to get investment and quite often filmmakers resort to seeing what they have available and just getting stuck in. This can be a long and arduous process and it becomes important to have the right team to provide the necessary moral support and encouragement. However, if you see this as a business, then the details of preproduction become the driver for managing your film. James highlights his process and has managed to get his feature film into a range of film festivals with prospects of reaching a wider audience. #FILMACADEMY #FILMFUNDING #FILMPODCAST

Screenwriter Boaz Yakin has helped create films such as 'The Rookie,' 'Prince of Persia,' and 'Safe,' along with franchise films like 'Now You See Me' and 'Max.' These movies allowed for him to pursue passion projects as a screenwriter. In his latest film, 'Boarding School,' he’s developed a horror-inspired hero’s journey for adolescents. “Those are writing jobs where you’re like one of twenty writers on any one of those movies. Maybe you contributed enough to have a screen credit, but none of those things that I have tried to make or been more personally [involved with] like 'Fresh,' 'A Price Above Rubies,' or 'Death in Love,'” said the screenwriter. “These are movies I wrote and directed that came from me.” The writer-director would prefer to only make independent films, but the balance between projects allow for him to get the smaller films on the big screen. “In order to pay the bills—in order to pay for these movies—I’ve had to make more commercial movies and write things like that and put money back into these things..." If you have seen Star Wars then you know Joseph Campbell's work. If you ever have seen The Lion King then you have seen one of Campbell's best student's, Chris Vogler, work.Chris Vogler wrote the game-changing book The Writers Journey: Mythic Structure for Writers. I read this book over 20 years ago and it changed the way I look at story. Chris studied the work and principles of the late master Joseph Campbell. His book The Hero with a Thousand Faces was the bases for Star Wars as well as almost every other Hollywood feature film in the past 60 years. What Chris Vogler did so well is that he translated Campbell's work and applied it to movies.
