Part 2 of our discussion with Mark Ward. Mark Ward holds a Ph.D. in New Testament Interpretation from Bob Jones University Seminary. He is currently the editor of Bible Study Magazine for Faithlife, the makers of Logos Bible Software. Mark Ward caught our attention when we each read His book, Authorized: The Use and Misuse of The King James Bible. This book unequivocally breaks down the arguments for readability and vernacular for the everyday reader and helps us to understand the difference between something we think we understand, and what we actually understand, as well as where the dangers lie. In this episode, we approach the topic of The King James Bible from a language standpoint, and from the viewpoint of Jesus, plus nothing. “This lightly written and frequently amusing book gently hides the competent scholarship that underlies it. For those who are convinced of the superiority of the KJV, whether for stylistic, cultural, pedagogical, theological, or traditional reasons, this is the book to read. Mercifully, Dr. Ward does not pummel his readers or sneer at those who take another position. Patiently, chapter by chapter, example by example, he makes his case-all of his work geared toward fostering more and better Bible reading. Highly recommended." Those are the words of D.A. Carson about our guest's book, entitled Authorized. As we continue our conversation with Dr. Mark Ward, we're going to hear yet another false friend example, talk about what the KJV translators themselves would have thought about KJV-onlyism, and more. The King James Bible remains the most recognizable piece of literature in the English-speaking world. It stands as a masterful example of translation for its day, involving some of history's most remarkable scholars. For over three centuries it served as the standard English Bible and has had unparalleled influence on English and American culture in nearly every sphere—including education, law, literature, government, art, science, and religion. Even though English has changed a lot over the last 400 years, there are thousands of people who believe the KJV to be the only trustworthy translation in English, and strongly discourage or even forbid the use of modern versions. This has come to be called “KJV-onlyism,” and I've met a handful of them over the years. In the next two episodes Dr. Mark Ward is going to help us understand this mentality, and graciously and lovingly argue why it's unhelpful. Although online discussions about the King James Bible's place in the 21st century can often become heated, there is an important conversation to be had about how language changes and the role of modern translations. In his book Authorized: The Use & Misuse of the King James Bible, author Mark Ward builds a case for the KJV translators' view that English Bible translations should be readable by what they called "the very vulgar"―and what we would call "the man on the street." Listen as Mark Ward discusses why we should make good use of modern Bible translations without losing an appreciation for the good old King James. This was a fun and refreshing conversation about an often controversial topic, and I hope that you'll enjoy it as well!On this episode we discuss:The benefits of continuing to use the King James BibleSeveral challenges of using only the King James BibleThe issues posed by dead words and "false friends" when reading the KJVWhy modern translations are valuable and helpfulWhy none of us should be "one-translation-only."Misconceptions about Bible translation that fuel unnecessary controversySuggestions for choosing which translation of Scripture is best for youSee the Show Notes at ReasonableTheology.org/Episode37Support the show (https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/reasonabletheology)

It's a tag team week. Nathan is out and Zach is in. Mark Ward joins to talk about his new book Authorized: The Use and Misuse of the King James Bible. This is one interview you don't want to miss.
The King James Version is a beloved translation of the Bible still used by many Christians despite the fact that it was originally updated over 400 years ago. Among these Christians are those who would label themselves King James Only meaning they believe the King James Version is the only valid translation of the Bible and that all major translations are at best inferior and at worst corrupt. It was with this in mind that Dr. Mark Ward wrote his latest book, Authorized: The Use and Misuse of the King James Version. In this final segment with Dr. Ward, we talk specifically about his book and how to show respect to a translation clearly blessed by God and yet still be able to appreciation modern, more understandable translations. Enjoyed bringing my friend Mark Ward back on The Shaun Tabatt Show to share about his new book Authorized: The Use and Misuse of the King James Bible (Lexham Press, 2018). About the Book: The King James Version has shaped the church, our worship, and our mother tongue for over 400 years. But what should we do with it today? The KJV beautifully rendered the Scriptures into the language of turn-of-the-seventeenth-century England. Even today the King James is the most widely read Bible in the United States. The rich cadence of its Elizabethan English is recognized even by non-Christians. But English has changed a great deal over the last 400 years―and in subtle ways that very few modern readers will recognize. In Authorized Mark L. Ward, Jr. shows what exclusive readers of the KJV are missing as they read God's word. In their introduction to the King James Bible, the translators tell us that Christians must "heare CHRIST speaking unto them in their mother tongue." In Authorized Mark Ward builds a case for the KJV translators' view that English Bible translations should be readable by what they called "the very vulgar"―and what we would call "the man on the street." About the Author: Mark L. Ward, Jr. received his PhD in New Testament Interpretation from Bob Jones University in 2012; he now serves the church as a Logos Pro at Faithlife, writing weekly articles on Bible study at the Logos Talk Blog. He is the author of multiple high school Bible textbooks, including The Story of the Old Testament and Biblical Worldview: Creation, Fall, Redemption. Have you ever been a part of a church or met a believer who believed the "Authorized" version was the only proper English Bible? Maybe you know all the text-critical issues, but do you know how to explain the importance of a vernacular Bible to people in a patient, loving, pastoral way? Mark Ward, a Logos Pro at Faithlife has laid out a stellar, easy-to-read explanation of KJV-onlyism in his new book, "Authorized: The Use and Misuse of the King James Bible" (Lexham Press, releasing 1/24/18). In this episode, Travis and Mark talk about most believers' tendency toward prizing one version and the virtues of using multiple translations, even in preaching. Check out more resources at exegeticaltools.com and pick up "Authorized," which D.A. Carson calls, "Highly Recommended" (which ought to be authorization enough!).
