Are you struggling with finding the desired outcome of your technical writing? You might've been overlooking some crucial details that make your writing doesn't deliver the message to your audience properly. Pam Hurley is the founder of Hurley Write, which provides customized writing and reviewing workshops for world-class companies. Pam started her career in higher education, teaching students in technical subjects who were frequently irritated by their "inability" to write. Pam wanted these gifted, intelligent kids to know they could write; they just lacked the necessary resources. With over 125 years of combined experience working with professionals in a number of areas, including energy, engineering, biotech/pharma, government, and aerospace, Hurley Write's team of experts is made up of seasoned writers, teachers, and writing coaches. Hurley Write contends that critical thinking and problem-solving skills are the cornerstones of excellent document writing, which extends far beyond syntax. Pam joined us today to talk about some strategies to achieve better readability and response from your technical writing. We start the conversation with Pam defining technical writing and how writing strategies can solve the problem of writing. Pam then educates us on the importance of knowing the audience that you are writing for, along with the three types of readers: primary, secondary, and tertiary. We then talk about the role critical thinking plays in technical writing, along with how it helps to figure out the needs of your audience. We also hear Pam's take on using generative AI for writing and why writing on your own is important as a skill. In this phase of the conversation, Pam explains how assessing feedback can help you to improve the quality of your writing. Then we pay attention to the synchronization of headings and sub-headings of a writing and how you can use it to get the attention of the reader. Furthermore, Pam talks about finding the balance between what the writer wants and what the reader wants. EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS [02.14] What is technical writing? [03.08] Technical writing strategy. It's Part 2 of our podcast series with guest Mariska Maas (@rubreart). This week Elizabeth chats with Mariska about the readability and visual branding of your book. For many authors, it might not be the most exciting part, but depending on your genre, you may be able to have a little bit more fun with it than you think. Mariska has a “Cinderella” approach to her design process meaning she wants to create a one-of-a-kind design for every book. If you haven't seen her Instagram page, @rubreart, it's worth it to see her beautiful artwork, even if the covers and book interiors aren't in your genre. She also emphasizes authors do not need to spend a lot of time on formatting if you have someone helping you, so if this is stopping you in your tracks from moving forward to publish, this is your friendly reminder to ask for help. For listeners of the podcast, she's offering a 5 percent discount on her services if you book within 3 months of listening. She's booking cover design and formatting clients into 2025 right now and offers a 3 week turnaround time on the project. Authors, this is a great way to book a service and set a hard deadline for yourself, especially if you are self-publishing. It's very similar to what would be expected of you from a traditional publisher who wants to stick to deadlines to get your work out into the world. While the interior design of the book might not be the most exciting, it's certainly the most important because it's where your reader is spending the most time. Not every genre allows for a lot of design on the interior, but fantasy and romance genres are certainly where you'll see more of it, and it's a fun way to give your book a little something extra to delight the reader's eye. When you're formatting your book, there are a lot of details to pay attention to with respect to where the text falls on the page, the presence of hyphens, and making sure the beginning and end of chapters are up to industry standards. This is just a small drop of water in a gallon bucket when it comes to all of the details you need to pay attention to for your book. You don't have to do this part alone, and in fact, it's advisable to make sure you always have extra sets of eyes on your book or hire a formatter so you can focus on your writing. Of course, mistakes are going to happen. We're all human and it's only natural there will be times when a book goes to print and something is missed in the formatting stage. Don't panic. Breathe. Take the steps to fix the error and move on with your day. For more about formatting the interior of your book and to hear a great strategy for how to get started right now, go listen to Podcast #40 right now! Who is Mariska Maas? Mariska Maas is the owner of the bookish design agency Rubre Art. She is a passionate book designer and illustrator. And has made it her goal to make a Cinderella one of a kind fit design for each and every book that she works on. No matter if it is for an indie author or a publisher, for everyone deserves amazing covers, interior formatting and illustrations. In her free time you can often see her doing arts and crafts, or reading a book from her never ending TBR.Where can you find Mariska? A: "We find disconcerting trends for maintainability. Code churn -- the percentage of lines that are reverted or updated less than two weeks after being authored -- is projected to double in 2024 compared to its 2021, pre-AI baseline. We further find that the percentage of 'added code' and 'copy/pasted code' is increasing in proportion to 'updated,' 'deleted,' and 'moved 'code. What photos to use in your SEO strategy Start with a professional photo of yourself on your home page and about page. People buy personality, not products and services. Let people who come to your site immediately see who you are  -  your eyes and smile are the gateway to an emotional connection. Your visual presence is key to building your personal brand. In addition, include images of you working with clients, behind-the-scenes activities, customized stock photos of your computer, office space, etc. If you don't have photos of your team, or of you working with clients, use stock photos. Canva is a great resource for stock photos and you don't need a pro account to use them. If possible, testimonials featured on your website should include a photo of the person who gave the testimonial. Where should you use photos on your website? As I mentioned before, you want to be visible on as many pages as possible so that people know immediately who you are. Your header or banner images are real estate to showcase yourself on every page. Every page of your website should have at least one photo. Your blogs should have a featured image which will help your website visitors readily identify what the blog is about - even if only a graphic with the title on it. Every time you write copy for a blog post, think about the keyword or keyphrase of your post and use an image that relates to that. I'll explain why. Photos are a great way to separate large blocks of copy to make your content more skimmable and improve readability. Readability influences SEO. Your host, Dr. Sharon Surita goes over two of the functional labs we use to help direct our food choices, make meal planning simpler and more precise with respect to improving energy and our sense of balance (homeostasis). Metabolic Typing is a method that is unique in that it addresses a person's bioindividual needs, macronutrient ratios and ingredients that work best. The Mediator Release Test is a food sensitivity test that allows us to understand which foods may be triggering immune responses even without having to challenge the ingredients prior to the lab draw. Dr. Surita holds a PhD in Environmental Engineering and has studied environmental toxicants extensively. She has published many peer-reviewed papers that cover topics specific to air, water and soil quality along with more specific papers on compounds found in consumer products, that may contribute to elevated health risks. Where previously, she focused on external stressors impacting health, she is now committed to helping others find optimal health by looking at both internal and external stressors. Royal Irish Academy Library in association with the Maynooth University Department of Early Irish, and the School of Celtic Studies, Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies. The Royal Irish Academy manuscript An Leabhar Breac/The Speckled Book was written in Irish by Murchadh Riabhach Ó Cuindlis (a scribe of the Book of Lecan), at Cluain Lethan in Múscraige Tíre, in north Co. Tipperary and at other locations, between the years 1408 and 1411. In the 16th century the manuscript was held by the Mac Egans of Duniry, the most prominent of the hereditary legal families of late medieval Ireland, whence it also received the title of Leabhar Mór Dúna Doighre/The Book of the MacEgans. It is the largest Irish vellum manuscript created by one scribe and contains religious and biblical material derived from Latin, Irish literature and history, including the lives of St Patrick and St Brigid, the Litany of Our Lady, Félire Óengusso Céli Dé, the humorous saga Aisling Meic Conglinne, and some reworkings of biblical history. This two-day conference will explore the historical, ecclesiastical, literary and illustrative aspects of An Leabhar Breac, this most impressive example of a predominantly religious manuscript compilation in the Irish vernacular.

Kyle Scott launched Crossing Broad, a Philadelphia sports blog, in 2009. His irreverent and edgy writing style gained a significant following among Philly sports fans, resulting in thousands of daily readers. However, it wasn't until the 2018 Supreme Court ruling lifted the ban on sports betting in the US that the business flourished. To capitalize on the ruling, Scott merged Crossing Broad with Warwick Gaming into CBWG, which owned and operated several popular sports and gambling websites. The company instantly became the largest independently owned US sports betting affiliate marketing network, generating $5 million in annual revenue.  In 2020, Ten months after joining forces, XLMedia acquired CBWG for $12 million in cash, $8 million worth of XLMedia shares, and the potential for another $9.5 million tied to a three-year earn-out.

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Searching for outliers, published by benkuhn on March 21, 2022 on LessWrong. Shortly after I started blogging, because I was a college student and had nothing better to do, I set a goal to write every week. I started in September 2013 and wrote around 150 posts between then and when I started working at Wave. (At that point I stopped having nothing better to do, so my blogging frequency tanked.) The outcomes of these 150 posts were extremely skewed: Two made it big on the Hacker News frontpage (What happened to all the non-programmers and Readability, hackability, and abstraction). After seeing the second post on HN, Dan Luu subscribed to my blog and started submitting lots of my posts. This caused an additional ~5 posts to get decent traction, which resulted in my first wave of subscribers that I didn't know personally, and provided a lot of motivation to keep writing. Dan and I also eventually became good friends. The other ~95% of posts were completely forgettable. This is a pretty typical spread of outcomes for blog writers: a few smash hits and a lot of clunkers. Eight years later, I've built a good enough intuition for what posts will resonate with people that I can now mostly avoid writing complete clunkers, but even so, my few best recent posts (In defense of blub studies and You don't need to work on hard problems) have been much more successful than the others, both in terms of being shared widely, and getting feedback like “this really influenced how I think.”1 This type of statistical distribution of outcomes is called heavy-tailed, because outcomes in the “tail” (i.e. ones that are far better than the typical outcome) have a relatively high chance of occurring, making the tail “heavy.” When I write blog posts, each post is a sample from the heavy-tailed distribution of blog post outcomes. You can most easily see the difference between a heavy-tailed and light-tailed distribution on a plot. Here's a plot comparing a heavy-tailed and light-tailed distribution with identical means and standard deviations, chosen to be similar to the distribution of household income in the US (median = $60,000; p99 = $600,000): Heavy-tailed distributions are really unintuitive to most people, since all the “action” happens in the tiny fraction of samples that are outliers. But lots of important things in life are outlier-driven, like jobs, employees, or relationships, and of course the most important thing of all, blog posts. Because heavy-tailed distributions are unintuitive, people often make serious mistakes when trying to sample from them: They don't draw enough samples They underestimate how good of an outcome it's possible to get They find it hard to tell whether they're following a strategy that will eventually work or not, so they get incredibly demoralized. If you're aware of when you're working on something that involves sampling from a heavy-tailed distribution, you can avoid those mistakes and end up with much better outcomes. As a rule of thumb, a heavy-tailed distribution is one where the top few percent of outcomes are a large multiple of the typical or median outcome. A classic example would be Vilfredo Pareto's finding that about 80% of Italy's land was owned by 20% of the population. It turns out that this happens across many other domains, too—a phenomenon called the Pareto principle or the 80-20 rule. In contrast, distributions that don't follow an 80-20 or similar rule are called “light-tailed.” Some examples: Income is heavy-tailed: the median person globally lives on $2,500 a year, while the top 1% live on $45,000, almost 20× more. Height is light-tailed: the tallest people are only a few feet taller than average. If height followed the same distribution as income, Elon Musk, who made $121b in 2021, would be about 85,000 km tall, or about ¼ of the dist...
