This enormous battleship, built with the latest technology, withstood extreme weather and enemy fire throughout the height of battle in World War II. She has remained unmoving at her Wilmington port for over six decades, but the stillness of her hull hides shadow figures, disembodied voices, and a man with hair like fire who all allegedly haunt this ship. And we decided to spend the night there! This week's episode is our Paranormal Investigation Aboard the Battleship North Carolina. Wilmington, North Carolina is home to the USS North Carolina, a retired World War II battleship that is open as a museum that draws over a quarter of a million visitors each year and serves as a memorial to the North Carolinians who died in the war. But now this special piece of American history faces an unlikely challenge - water. That's because blue sky flooding, made increasingly frequent by sea level rise, is impacting visitor access to the battleship. The path forward is a Living With Water approach that will convert flooded parking lots into wetland, capture stormwater from the remaining parking area, and restore a natural shoreline. The Battleship North Carolina project is discussed by Captain Terry Bragg, Executive Director of the Battleship North Carolina; Dawn York, Senior Coastal Scientist at Moffatt and Nichol; Jenny Davis, Research Ecologist at NOAA National Ocean Service; and Rami Diaz, Senior Project Designer at Waggonner & Ball.waterloop is a nonprofit media outlet, made possible in part by a grant from Spring Point Partners. The Battleship North Carolina was a major player in the Pacific War theatre during WWII. Even though the death toll during her active years was quite low, ghosts are said to be quite active aboard the ship. So active that paranormal investigators, including TAPS, have been investigating it for years. This naval relic is allegedly one of the most haunted places in North Carolina, and the best part about it? You can find out for yourself. Pack your bags, grab your sea legs—we're headed to Wilmington, North Carolina. The Lady Dicks dick-tect history, mystery and paranormal tales from around the world. In this very first installment of Retiring on the Cape Fear, we speak with Doug Springer, owner of Wilmington Water Tours. Doug and his wife founded Wilmington Water Tours, so they could share the rich history and beauty of this region. Once a bustling harbor, did you know our port city used to be the main economic engine in the state of North Carolina? Possible, in no small part, because of the Cape Fear River, the largest navigable river in the state. During colonial times, goods, produce, and naval supplies, including turpentine, rosin, tar and pitch were sent down river to be exported, while manufactured goods were imported and sent north. And that's just the beginning!Their passion for sharing stories such as these lead to acquiring “The Wilmington,” a state-of-the-art, fully enclosed and handicapped accessible motorized catamaran. This delightful watercraft can accommodate up to 49 passengers. Now in their 10th year of operation, they offer a wide range of daily tours, kids activities, sunset trips with live music, private events and much more! They even have a water taxi called the Bizzy Bee that takes passengers to four major stops along the Cape Fear River, including the Battleship North Carolina.Whether you're looking for a quiet getaway, eco-tours and water excursions, or exciting nightlife, the Greater Wilmington area offers it all and you can experience it from the water on Wilmington Water Tours! Check them out at https://wilmingtonwatertours.net/. In the meantime, enjoy the podcast! Doug shares the story of how he started all those years ago by leaving the corporate world behind and putting his 6 passenger vacation boat to work. We also talk about the special history of the river including one of the oldest shipwrecks on the east coast, the rich ecology, and how a historical themed riverwalk on Eagle's Island from the Battleship to Cape Fear Memorial Bridge could bring in a ton of tourism and a resurgence to that area.Check out our website https://retiringonthecapefear.com/ for resources you heard about in our podcast and to learn more about our show's host and mission.

The Battleship North Carolina was a legendary vessel in the nation's fleet when it was scheduled to be torn apart for scrap metal in 1958. Despite its storied history of active service and a lineage that dates back to 1820, the Showboat, as it was called, was going to be torn apart until the state for which it is named rallied to save it and preserve its history. On this week's episode, we explore that history, from the ship's construction and active service, to the day it was torpedoed and the historic campaign that gave it a second life. Joining the discussion is Kim Sincox, museum service director for the Battleship North Carolina. The Battleship North Carolina is open 365 days a year. Visit BattleshipNC.com for more information on events onboard the ship. Cape Fear Unearthed is written, edited and hosted by Hunter Ingram. Additional editing by Adam Fish.
