West Virginia boasts its fair share of talent, and that includes musicians--check out some talented artists that hail from the Mountain State…Breeze Airways launches a nonstop flight from Charleston to New York City…and in Native America history, did you know the Kanawha Valley once had the highest concentration of burial mounds in North America?…on today's daily304. #1 – From WV TOURISM – Nothing soothes the soul quite like mountain music, and in West Virginia, there is plenty of just that. Whether you're into traditional country music or looking for unique covers with tons of Appalachian energy, you are sure to find a catchy tune from a West Virginia musician. Renowned country music star Brad Paisley doesn't hesitate to pour his Mountain State heritage into his music. Paisley grew up in Glen Dale in the Northern Panhandle. Contemporary Christian artist Michael W. Smith grew up in the small Wayne County town of Kenova. Head over to wvtourism.com to learn more about West Virginia's talented musicians. According to archaeologist Darla Spencer, author of Woodland Mounds of West Virginia, more than 400 mounds have been recorded in West Virginia, and their presence was once so extensive that explorers couldn't believe they were of Native American origin. Scholars long ago proved that indigenous peoples had raised the mounds. Today you can still find ancient mounds in South Charleston and Dunbar in the Kanawha Valley. A professor of Native American studies at West Virginia University, Spencer examined the Grave Creek Mound in Moundsville, and 16 other mounds and mound groups of mounds in West Virginia in her book. In this episode of The Strange South, co-hosts Patrice, Marleah, & Courtney dive into three fascinating stories about demonic possession and exorcism in the American South, inspired by the television show "Evil." The episode begins with the hosts enjoying a unique "posh parmatini" - a sophisticated cocktail featuring parmesan-infused vodka, courtesy of their friend Mary. The Archive of the Afterlife: A Skeptic's TaleThe first story centers around the Archive of the Afterlife Museum in Moundsville, West Virginia, where owner Steve Hummel houses various allegedly haunted objects. One particular item, a well-worn copy of Dr. Seuss's "The Foot Book," was claimed to be haunted after being connected to a quadruple homicide. However, when skeptical investigator Kenny Biddle looked into the case, he tracked down the book's original owner - a man named Kyle who had simply enjoyed the book as a child before his father sold it at a yard sale. While the book was indeed from near the location of a tragic murder, its direct connection to the crime was debunked. The Modern-Day Demon SlayerThe second story profiles Greg Locke, a controversial fundamentalist preacher from Mount Joliet, Tennessee, who has branded himself as a "demon slayer." Through his Global Vision Bible Church, Locke conducts mass "deliverances," claiming to cast out demons of everything from video games to lactose intolerance. His 2023 movie "Come Out in Jesus Name" grossed $2.5 million in just three days. The hosts discuss how his tent revival-style events, complete with sawdust floors and no air conditioning, create an environment where mass hysteria and spiritual experiences flourish. The Medical MysteryThe final and most compelling story follows Amy Stamatis, a med flight nurse in Little Rock, Arkansas, who experienced a sudden and inexplicable mental breakdown in 2006. After treating a burn victim, she began experiencing severe cognitive issues, hearing voices, and exhibiting erratic behavior. Despite numerous medical evaluations, no physical cause was found. The situation culminated in a tragic incident where she fell from a second-story window, leaving her paralyzed. The story takes an unexpected turn when a Pentecostal evangelist named Cindy Lawson performed an exorcism in her hospital room, after which Stamatis reportedly returned to mental wellness, though she remained physically paralyzed. The hosts frame these stories through the lens of the three main characters from "Evil" - the scientist, the psychologist, and the priest - offering different perspectives on how such events might be interpreted through various lenses of understanding. The Strange South podcast continues to explore the unusual, unexplained, and unconventional stories of the American South, blending humor, skepticism, and open-minded curiosity in their storytelling approach.00:00 Introduction to The Strange South00:32 Casual Conversations and Catching Up01:40 The Posh Parmatini Recipe06:46 Book Discussion: Blackwater by Michael McDowell13:33 Exploring the Show 'Evil'17:13 Exorcisms and Southern Evangelicalism21:11 Story Time: Archive of the Afterlife Museum22:46 The Haunted Children's Book23:43 Investigating the Book's History24:27 Debunking the Haunted Book Myth28:50 The Serial Killer Sod Collection30:25 The Demon Slayer Preacher40:58 The Exorcism of Amy Stamatis49:36 Concluding Thoughts and Farewell

What a CreepHarry Powers: The Inspiration for “The Night of the Hunter”Season 27, Episode 3Harry Powers, often called the "Lonely Hearts Killer," was a notorious American serial killer active in the early 1930s. Born Herman Drenth in the Netherlands in 1892, he emigrated to the United States and eventually settled in West Virginia. Powers used personal ads in newspapers to target his victims, posing as a lonely, wealthy bachelor seeking companionship. He lured women, often widows or divorcées, with promises of marriage and financial security. In 1931, Powers was arrested and charged with the murders of Asta Eicher, a widow from Illinois, her three children, and another woman named Dorothy Lemke from Massachusetts. His murders were shockingly brutal; he confined his victims in a hidden room in his garage before killing them. After murdering his victims, Powers took their money and belongings. Powers' trial received extensive media coverage due to the horrific details and his manipulative use of "lonely hearts" ads. He was ultimately convicted and sentenced to death, being hanged on March 18, 1932, in Moundsville, West Virginia. His crimes have inspired books and films, solidifying his infamy as a symbol of betrayal in love and trust. Harry Powers was also a significant inspiration for the novel and subsequent film The Night of the Hunter. The novel was written by Davis Grubb in 1953 and adapted into a film in 1955. Featured Locations: Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum, Weston 71 Asylum Dr, Weston, WV 26452 The Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum is a massive Gothic structure that opened in 1864 to treat mentally ill patients but soon became infamous for overcrowding and brutal conditions. This historic house occasionally hosts ghost tours for those curious to experience its eerie presence. Silver Run Tunnel (North Bend Rail Trail), Cairo Cairo, WV 26337 The Silver Run Tunnel on the North Bend Rail Trail is said to be haunted by the Lady in White, a bride who died tragically on her wedding day. Visitors often sense a sudden drop in temperature and an overwhelming sadness when passing through the tunnel. Sweet Springs Sanitarium, Gap Mills 195 Sweet Springs Valley Rd, Gap Mills, WV 24941 Originally a resort, this sanitarium became a tuberculosis hospital in the early 20th century. Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia. Today is Sunday, Dec. 17 Moundsville's name reflects its ancient roots. New River Gorge park officials prepare to open a new rock climbing area to the public. And find the perfect location for your film in Almost Heaven. #YesWV #1 – From WTRF-TV – West Virginia is known for its Appalachian culture and storied mountain communities, but there is an even older side to the region, one that is ancient and pre-dates the founding of the state itself. During the Early Woodland Period between 3,000 and 2,000 years ago, the Adena people left their mark through ancient building sites. There are 424 recorded prehistoric mounds in what is now West Virginia, according to the West Virginia Encyclopedia. The city of Moundsville is named after an ancient structure, the Grave Creek Mound, the largest earthen, conical mound in the Western hemisphere. An 1838 exploration of the mound, found two burial vaults with human remains and grave goods. Chieftains and shamans were typically buried in mounds while ordinary people were burned and buried in log tombs, archeologists determined. Multiple mounds of varying sizes once made up the landscape of what is now Moundsville, but these structures sadly were destroyed through farming and treasure hunters. However, you can still view the Grave Creek Mound and learn more about it at the onsite museum. The West Virginia Land Trust recently secured access to the 40-acre preserve located near the National Park Service Visitor Center in Fayetteville. WVLT Conservation Project Manager Adam Webster says the site won't officially open to the public until sometime next year, once they've raised more funds to make the area more publicly accessible. Webster said future plans for the property include parking, signage and hiking opportunities. “There's a couple of overlooks especially in the fall when the leaves are down, and you can see the New River. It's just another really pretty spot along the Gorge that people can enjoy,” he said. Against a backdrop of picturesque mountain views, CEO/Founder Josh Bennett poured out generous cider samples for guests. Bennett took a number of detours on his way to producing cider commercially. From working on a Montana cattle ranch to training horses in Florida, and from driving a tractor trailer, to starting a business in disaster relief, Bennett developed skills that would serve him well later. After three years in Germany with the U.S. Navy, he took advantage of the GI Bill and studied agriculture and agronomy at West Virginia University. Ending up a few counties from where he grew up, Bennett found his calling. In 2014, Hawk Knob, named after a nearby mountain, opened its hard cider operation. Hawk Knob's tasting room opened in 2015 and the fledgling business took flight. Today, Hawk Knob Appalachian Hard Cider is a small, hands-on operation with a big reputation for producing dry, complex beverages full of character and flavor. Bennett and his team still hand-sort their heirloom and modern apples, then press, age, and blend them. To learn more or plan a visit, check out www.hawkknob.com. Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia. Today is Thursday, March 2 A Raleigh County mine service weathers difficulties to come back stronger than ever…Every business has a story--what's yours? Trade reps want to help you become a better exporter…and discover the hidden treasures of Moundsville…on today's daily304. #1 – From THE REGISTER-HERALD – Falcon Mine Service, a provider of cutting tools, drills, and bit products, started serving the West Virginia coal mining industry in 2001. Founder Darrell Green began the business as a one-man show and built a strong multi-million-dollar business, despite battling cancer twice. Along the way, he met Clint Henderson and realized they had common interests. Their partnership led to business expansion, and they began selling wear parts instead of just bits. In 2021 the business suffered a huge blow when Green passed from COVID-19. His daughter, Amanda Green, and wife, Ceretha Green, worked with Henderson to continue Green's legacy. It started with three key relationships: Workforce West Virginia directed them to WV Hive, which in turn connected them with Robert C. Byrd Institute. Among the three, Falcon now had the support it needed. The business purchased a CNC lathe machine so workers could begin manufacturing parts. This enabled them to hire a machinist. “Prayerfully, our goals are to continue with the mining industry, to vertically integrate the business to be our own manufacturer, and to hire another machinist so we can continue to expand,” Amanda Green said. By reconsidering their business, finding more economical sources for supplies, and producing items for themselves, the small but mighty team on a hilltop in Midway did over $3 million in sales last year. If only you had a way to get people's attention. But here's the truth: Trying to get your customer's attention in a noisy and crowded marketplace is a losing battle. Instead of focusing on ways to grab their attention, the key to success is to find ways to keep it. And that's where storytelling can help. There are dozens of main streets like this — Rust Belt towns with a lot of history and hometown charm. That's how Moundsville appears at first glance, at least. Unlike many similar places, Moundsville has a half-dozen destinations hidden in plain sight — unexpected treasures that you'll be stunned to find in this particular corner of the world. The most remarkable of these marvels is, undoubtedly, the Palace of Gold, the centerpiece of the community of New Vrindaban. The Grave Creek Mound — which gives the city of Moundsville its name — is a burial mound built by the area's indigenous population sometime around 200 B.C.E. Look east from the top of the mound, and you'll see an imposing, stately structure: The former West Virginia Penitentiary, now the site of historical tours, haunted attractions and filming locations. The aptly named Grand Vue Park (grandvuepark.com) offers treetop villas and views of the region — observed while hurtling down a zipline on one of eight adventure courses. The West Virginia Penitentiary located in Moundsville, West Virginia not only provides visitors with a wealth of history, but some also say it is called home to several resident ghosts. At one stage of it's history the facility was ranked by the U.S. Department of Justice as one of the top ten most violent correctional facilities in the country. Conditions began to deteriorate even more in the 1950s when overcrowding once again became a major problem. Three prisoners were often forced into a 5 x 7-foot cell!During its 119-year life as a penitentiary, the facility held some of the most violent killers, rapists, and other criminals, many of whom never left the institution alive. It comes as no surprise that this type of environment would leave behind more than a few wandering spirits.Find out more about the wandering spirits of the Western States Penitentiary in this episode of the True Hauntings Podcast. If you have enjoyed this episode please leave us a review and subscribe and share. We would love to hear from you too!Join us on our Facebook page - https://www.facebook.com/TrueHauntingsPodcastP.S.
