Beowulf opens up about a very hard year that started with loss, peaked with a relapse, and rounded out with more loss. He gives us an inside look at what feeling like you've hit rock bottom looks like, and how multiple forms of therapy, volunteer work and doing what he loved brought him back out to where he is today. His story is filled with laughter, heartache, triumph and just plain being human. We even cover the downfalls of 1099 vs. W2 for all of you freelancers out there! I love getting to interview funny people but even more so when they are my friends. I hope you enjoy listening to this conversation as much as we enjoyed having it! On today's episode I have Beowulf Jones! Beowulf is the Producer of the RISK! Podcast Live LA shows, as well as the Host and Producer of the storytelling show "Turtle" at The Ruby here in LA. I first met Beowulf when I was working at the Nerdist Showroom at Meltdown. Beowulf was one of the main techs at Meltdown and one of the first people to welcome me into Meltdown fold. I talked with Beowulf about growing up in Canada, working on Wall Street, getting started in comedy, moving to New York, working on RISK!, Storytelling, working with The State, our love for Meltdown, and so much more. A huge thanks for Beowulf for taking the time to join me on the podcast. If you're interested in taking one of Beowulf's storytelling classes here in Los Angeles, click on the link below to register. Make sure to follow him on all of the social media sites below as well. Thanks, Beowulf! Enjoy the episode.
Gastor Almonte, Beowulf Jones and Tracy Rowland share stories about the birds and the bees, the wrong place to masturbate, and taking risky leaps.
Today's episode of the podcast is a special episode. This is the audio from the NerdMelt Farewell interviews I filmed last month. I had so many incredible people join me for this. On this episode you will hear: Matt Mira, Sarah Silverman, April Richardson, Kyle Clark, Hannah Kyle Crichton, Beowulf Jones, Zac Mckeever, Danielle Kramer, Aaron Baker, Nolan Fabricius, Julia Prescott, Samee Junio, Caitlin Durante, Matt Burnside, Jenny Chalikian, Ed Salazar, Aristotle Acevedo, Katie Levine, and Dave Kloc. The Nerdist Showroom at Meltdown Comics was a place comics across Los Angeles called home. Fans came in from around the country to see shows at NerdMelt and shop at Meltdown Comics. On March 30th, 2018, the place we called home came to a close. So many incredible people had a part in making this place magical since it first opened as NerdMelt on April 2, 2011. We found out 9 days before closing that we were in our last week of shows. I spent 5 of those days reaching out to everybody I possibly could to sit down and share their memories with me for this video. I was amazed at how eager everybody was to be a part of this. A huge thanks to every comedian and member of the NerdMelt family that took the time to rush over to NerdMelt in the final days to film this with me. You can watch the fill video on the website www.onthemicpodcast.com or on YouTube. We miss you NerdMelt and Meltdown Comics. Thanks for the memories. Enjoy the episode.
W're back with a REAL episode and we are joined by Beowulf Jones (@iambeowulf) to talk all about "Lee Marvin vs Derek Jeter" (S4E19) - where we really don't spend much time talking about either of them... but we do talk about how much Beowulf really doesn't like comedy (much less 30 Rock). We also talk about how sometimes 30 Rock handles things in ways that they really shouldn't, Liz's dating life, and Jack and his decision making. tl;drEpisode: Season 4, Episode 17 // "Lee Marvin vs. Derek Jeter"Guest: Beowulf Jones (@iambeowulf)Episode Discussion Starts at: 25:45 See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

On Butterflies of Wisdom today, Best-Selling Author, Win Kelly Charles and Juan Carlos Gill welcomes Kevin Allison. Kevin, creator, and the host of RISK!, started his comedy career on the legendary sketch series The State on MTV. But in 2009, everything changed. “I was doing a solo show out West, playing characters as usual,” he says. “Afterward, Michael Ian Black [also of The State] said, ‘I kept hoping you’d drop the act and tell some of your own stories.’ I said, ‘Yikes, that just seems so risky…’ But even as I said it, I could feel in my gut that that kind of risk could lead to the best stuff.” The very next week, Kevin was on stage telling his stories. “Suddenly, I was looking right into the eyes of audience members. We were reacting to each other, like friends. After the show, people didn’t just say, ‘That was funny,’ they said, ‘Thank you. That got to me.’ I was finding the meaning in my own experiences and the people listening felt like they’d lived through these things with me. The more I worried I was taking a risk with a story – because it was too emotional, too provocative, or just too nuts – the more the audience lit up.” In August of 2009, host Kevin and producer Michelle Walson started the live show RISK! “where people tell true stories they never thought they’d dare to share in public” at Arlene’s Grocery on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. It was an instant hit. Stories ran the gamut from the sacred to the profane, the hilarious to the horrific – and for the audience, it was a chance to re-connect with the things that make us human. It’s still just about the most cathartic, laugh-out-loud, anything-goes kind of smorgasbord you’re likely to see anywhere. The monthly RISK! Live show, winner of an ECNY Award for Best Variety Show, now lives at The Bell House Theater in Brooklyn and the Nerdmelt Theater in LA. RISK! also tours to sold-out international crowds. Many remarkable people have shown a side of themselves on RISK! that you probably haven’t seen elsewhere, like Michael Ian Black, Janeane Garofalo, R. Ben Garant, Lisa Lampanelli, Kevin Nealon, Margaret Cho, Marc Maron, Sarah Silverman, Michael Showalter, Maria Bamford, Nick Swardson, Lili Taylor, Adam McKay, Rachel Dratch, Andy Borowitz, Kerri Kenney-Silver, Joe LoTruglio, and more. The audio podcast of RISK! – also hosted by Kevin Allison – premiered online in October of 2009. The podcast includes not just the best stories from the live shows but also “radio-style” stories and interstitial music and comedy from artists all over the world. Most episodes of the show are free and easy to download from iTunes and other sources. With new episodes released each Monday, the RISK! The podcast is the winner of an ECNY Award for Best Podcast and has been downloaded tens of millions of times to date. In 2010, Chris Castiglione and Jeff Barr joined RISK! As producers (and co-founders). With the new team in place, the RISK! Podcast grew from being a bi-monthly release to a regularly occurring weekly podcast. Meanwhile, the RISK! Live show went bi-coastal with live performances in Hollywood at the NerdMelt Theater (hosted by Beowulf Jones). In 2011, Kevin and Chris created The Story Studio, at www.thestorystudio.org, a school dedicated to teaching people from all walks of life to turn their most meaningful experiences into powerful self-expression. “Practically anybody will benefit from this training,” Kevin says. “We always say that, from the bar to the boardroom, a good story well told is what leaves a lasting impression.” New workshops through The Story Studio start each month, and corporate workshops can be custom-tailored to a company’s needs. RISK! is a labor of love, a public groundswell, and a start-up with one hell of a future in the works. Be a part of it all. Or, as Kevin ends every episode of the podcast saying, “Folks, today’s the day. Take a risk!” To learn more about Kevin visit http://www.risk-show.com/.
