Jenny Chalikian! Erin Judge! Comedians! Friends! Delights! More! Erin Judge and Jenny Chalikian have a new combo comedy out now called Romantic Comedy: Live At The Ripped Bodice, available everywhere comedy is streamed or sold. ABOUT THE ALBUM: Erin and Jenny have been hosting a monthly comedy showcase at the Los Angeles romance bookstore The Ripped Bodice since 2016. For this stand-up album, Erin and Jenny opened the show together, then each performed long sets of their own material. The result is a delightful and hilarious glimpse into what these two dynamic co-hosts experience in their day-to-day lives as queer women in LA. The two met performing comedy in North Carolina in 2012 (Erin was on tour; Jenny was local). After making LA their home, they approached Leah and Bea Koch, sisters and co-owners of The Ripped Bodice, about launching a monthly comedy showcase at the bookstore just a few weeks after it opened. Leah and Bea agreed to give them a shot, and Erin and Jenny named the new show Romantic Comedy. By bringing some of the best voices in LA comedy to the mostly-women book lovers that make up Ripped Bodice audiences, they built Romantic Comedy into a unique and fun monthly event that's beloved by fans and comics alike. When Erin and Jenny started talking about making an album, they knew that The Ripped Bodice would be the perfect venue, and they were thrilled that Blonde Medicine was on board for a joint comedy album. Romantic Comedy: Live at The Ripped Bodice features both comics performing together up top, just like they do every month. Since Jenny is a regular caregiver of Erin's two kids, their unique chosen family inspires a refreshing departure from the usual parenting material, that is still relatable to anyone who has to cope with the ridiculous and unexpected challenges of raising kids. Erin shares stories of dealing with being old-pregnant and reluctantly polyamorous, and Jenny jokes about coming of age as a college gay in North Carolina and being a godmother with intense demon-fighting responsibilities. ABOUT ERIN JUDGE: Erin Judge is an accomplished comedian, writer, and performer. She co-wrote (with Tina Romero) the forthcoming horror comedy film Queens of the Dead, starring Margaret Cho, Katy O'Brian, Jaquel Spivey and more. Erin also wrote the award-winning novel Vow of Celibacy. Her previous comedy album, So Many Choices, is also available on Blonde Medicine. ABOUT JENNY CHALIKIAN: LA-based comedian Jenny Chalikian started out in North Carolina and quickly fell in love with stand-up comedy. After landing in LA in 2015, Jenny honed her voice working as a manager and a regular performer at the popular alt-comedy venue NerdMelt. Jenny blends observational comedy with personal anecdotes that touch on themes of identity, relationships, and the quirks of daily life. ABOUT YOU: You are someone reading these words, considering listening to this podcast and I commend you for it. ABOUT THIS PODCAST EPISODE: This is only the first HALF of the conversation I had with Jenny and Erin. For the second half, subscribe via Apple Podcasts OR merely click on over here to Patreon! Thanks and love, all!
This week Kyle and Matthew are joined by Ryan Burke, one half of the guitar youtube channel 60 Cycle Hum. Recently Rad got a little shout out on Ryan's show and after some introductions, he was down to chat with the rad boys. Turns out all three of them have put in some years working at DIY venues, Kyle and Matthew of course were part of NerdMelt and Ryan tells about his own experiences running DIY venues in San Diego. They, of course, chat guitars but the convo covers a pretty broad spectrum of topics. Rad is always excited to make new friends and we appreciate Ryan taking time to hang out with us! On today's episode we are coming to you LIVE from San Diego Comic-Con 2019! This is our fifth year returning to SDCC to do a live show, and this years show did not disappoint! A few days leading up to Comic-Con, I actually didn't know if this panel/show was even going to happen. Guests continued to fall through, and a few days before the convention my co-host also dropped out. Luckily though with moments notice, Todd Masters and Stacie Carver from Toddland quickly jumped on as guests. I knew my friend James Simenc would also be in town taping with Conan, and he joined the show last minute as my co-host. With our largest crowd to date, we had possibly my favorite shows we've done here. On the episode I talked with James about prepping for the Conan Comic-Con sketches and some of his moments with Conan, as well as a little bit of our Nerdmelt history for the audience. We also talked with Todd and Stacie about their creative process for their Comic-Con exclusives for Bob's Burgers, Family Guy, and American Dad, as well as what it was like to grow up with Todd and so much more. I can't begin to thank James, Todd, and Stacie enough for being so willing to join me last minute. I had such an incredible time with them and it made this year's SDCC absolutely incredible for me. As I mention in the intro, I apologize for the audio issues on the episode. Some mics are louder then others. While I tried to do my best to balance them in editing, the damage was done to some sections. Our mic check before the show was good, so I don't know why we had an issue. The joys of recording live shows! Thank you again to San Diego Comic-Con for having us back for our fifth year. Here's to the next 5! Thanks, James, Todd, and Stacie! Enjoy the episode.
On today's episode I have the Creators & Producers of the new Netflix show, "Historical Roasts", Eddie Furth and Ryan Pigg! I first met Eddie and Ryan very briefly in passing during my time at Meltdown when Historical Roasts and Fictional Roasts were regular shows at NerdMelt. However, this was the first time we've actually sat down and talked and it was such a great time! I talked with Eddie and Ryan about their time as interns at NerdMelt and how they created the show during one of their shifts, how the concept for the show evolved, bringing our mutual friend Samee Junio on as a Producer, selling the show to Netflix, working with Jeff Ross, seeing it on The Tonight Show, and so much more! A huge thanks to Eddie and Ryan for taking the time to come and join me on the show. They've had an incredibly busy week with press and the premier of "Historical Roasts" and were kind enough to still squeeze this in. Make sure you tune in starting TONIGHT at Midnight on Netflix and watch the show. The cast of these episodes are incredible. So much work went into making this show possible and I couldn't be more excited for Eddie, Ryan, and Samee to have the show that hatched in a small comedy room in the back of a comic book store come to life on Netflix. Thanks, Eddie and Ryan! Enjoy the episode!
Danielle Kramer, Senior Producer of Exactly Right Network joins Lex on The Wolf Den. The two discuss the network's formation, and which aspects of My Favorite Murder its original shows hope to maintain. Danielle also discusses what led her to the podcasting, including time at NerdMelt and JASH. Plus, what exactly makes a good podcast translate to television?
The last open mic at Nerdmelt with Brandon Wardell on 3-26-18
This week on the show Kyle and Matthew chat with their friend and fellow former NerdMelt staffer, Jack Kelly. Together, they break down the most popular broadway musical of the last decade. They are reverent, focused, and absolutely do not spin off on any weird tangents whatsoever... Man, you should see your face right now. This week on the show, Kyle, Matthew, and Jack Kelly breakdown the unstoppable cultural juggernaut that is Hamilton. They discuss their experiences with the play and how it has emotionally effected them. They break down the brilliance of Lin-Manuel Miranda and the fine art of balancing historical accuracy with dramatic storytelling. They get into how the play reflects the larger idea of American identity and how that seems to have manifested into a play that speaks to and has effected so many people in so many ways. Also, they talk about fan fiction. Erotic fan fiction. Over the last few years Jack created a massive alternate universe fan fiction using the characters from this popular play. These stories have created some internet drama. They are also pretty awesome. This episode does a pretty great job illustrating how and why Jack is one of Kyle and Matthew's favorite people and the trio have a fantastic time using the backdrop of this awesome play to get really, really weird. This was a personal favorite episode for all parties involved and before you even ask, yes, we will be doing a follow up with more stories about fan fiction in the future. There is a lot of really fantastic writing out there about the significance of Hamilton as a piece of art. There is also this podcast, which does that but also gets pretty sexy. Please join us on an odyssey into the great American psyche. On today's episode, I talked with comedian Jonathan Giles! Jonathan and I first met doing an open mic at the Nerdist Showroom only to find out that we were actually working together there as well. Austin Grant joined us on this episode as we got to know more about Jonathan and his career. We talked with Jonathan about how he started comedy in Chicago, moving to Los Angeles, being a part of NBC's Late Night Writers Program, reminiscing over some of our favorite NerdMelt memories, a lot of riffs, and so much more. A huge thanks to Jonathan for taking the time to join us on the show. It was great to learn more about Jonathan and his career in comedy. Make sure to follow Jonathan on all of the links on www.onthemicpodcast.com and make sure to go see him perform! Thanks, Jonathan! Enjoy the episode.
Today's episode of the podcast is a special episode. This is the audio from the NerdMelt Farewell interviews I filmed last month. I had so many incredible people join me for this. On this episode you will hear: Matt Mira, Sarah Silverman, April Richardson, Kyle Clark, Hannah Kyle Crichton, Beowulf Jones, Zac Mckeever, Danielle Kramer, Aaron Baker, Nolan Fabricius, Julia Prescott, Samee Junio, Caitlin Durante, Matt Burnside, Jenny Chalikian, Ed Salazar, Aristotle Acevedo, Katie Levine, and Dave Kloc. The Nerdist Showroom at Meltdown Comics was a place comics across Los Angeles called home. Fans came in from around the country to see shows at NerdMelt and shop at Meltdown Comics. On March 30th, 2018, the place we called home came to a close. So many incredible people had a part in making this place magical since it first opened as NerdMelt on April 2, 2011. We found out 9 days before closing that we were in our last week of shows. I spent 5 of those days reaching out to everybody I possibly could to sit down and share their memories with me for this video. I was amazed at how eager everybody was to be a part of this. A huge thanks to every comedian and member of the NerdMelt family that took the time to rush over to NerdMelt in the final days to film this with me. You can watch the fill video on the website www.onthemicpodcast.com or on YouTube. We miss you NerdMelt and Meltdown Comics. Thanks for the memories. Enjoy the episode.
