On today's show, we're chatting with Meagan Svendsen, a Vintage Coach Bag Restorer & Collector. Meagan learned the love of vintage hunting and restoration from her mom who taught her every technique in the book. After losing her mom unexpectedly in 2021, and finding her first vintage Coach bag “in the wild” Meagan began collecting and restoring over 400 vintage Coach bags. On this episode, we dive into the rich history of the Coach brand, including some background on Bonnie Cashin, the bags she designed, and the legacy that still holds today. Ultimately, Meagan loves vintage Coach because of the quality of the vintage leather, which is truly meant to last. As a restorer and collector, it's her goal to breathe new life into vintage bags, and she shares some of her best tips and tricks. This episode is a really fun deep dive, so let's get right into it! DISCUSSED IN THE EPISODE: [3:08] Meagan grew up antiquing, and restoring old things alongside her mother. [8:01] The history of the Coach brand, starting as a family-owned leather goods brand in the early 1960s. [9:53] The story of Bonnie Cashin, the original creative director for Coach in the 1960s, who brought the infamous turnlock to the brand. [16:25] Meagan's goal with restoration: bring the bag back to its best condition, with the least invasive technique. [17:28] The story of some of the rarest Coach bags, like the United Airlines Coach stewardess bag, or the Coach Federal bag (rumored to be gifts from President Nixon, according to clippings from October 21, 1972 from The Indianapolis Star). [24:38] Prior to 1994, there's a process of elimination of clues to date and name your Coach bag. After that time, the Coach creed utilizes an alpha-numerical system. Im going to focus on three films this week. The 1945 film Fallen Angel starring Linda Darnell will be the first. The second will be the 1952 Stanwyck noir: Clash By Night and the third is a bit of a wild card: The 2013 film The Canyons starring Lindsay Lohan and porn star James Dean, spelled D-E-E-N. There are a few details about costumes I want to be sure that I properly credit. The costume design for Clash By Night was done by Michael Woulfe, and the Jewelry was designed by Joan Joseff. Fallen Angel was costumed by Bonnie Cashin. The Canyon's costume designer was Keely Crum but Miss Lohan's clothes were all American Apparel.
This week's guest is Dr. Stephanie Lake. Stephanie is the fifth scholar in the world to earn a Ph.D. in Decorative Arts, Design History, and Material Culture. Stephanie established herself as a decorative arts curator before opening her gorgeous jewellery design firm, Stephanie Lake Design. Her one of a kind jewellery designs are informed by her work as a curator, archivist and auction specialist. Towards the beginning of her career, while living in Manhattan, Stephanie became part of the four-person team that launched Sotheby's Fashion Department. Together, with her scholarly work, this led to a friendship with the fashion designer Bonnie Cashin, now known as the "mother" of American sportswear. After forming this friendship Stephanie then went on to curate major retrospectives of Bonnie Cashin's work in the US and Japan and then published the definitive biography of the designer with Rizzoli New York. Upon Bonnie Cashin's death, Stephanie became Bonnie's sole heir. With that she created a multi-million dollar network of philanthropic programs in Bonnie Cashin's name, and owns Bonnie Cashin's personal deign archive. The archive is among the most significant single-designer archives in existence today. This last week, a museum in Ukraine was set ablaze by Russian invaders. That museum carried over two dozen pieces by one of the most celebrated Ukrainian artists of all time. Today, Stauney introduces us to Maria Prymachenko, a self-taught artist known for her naive style of Ukrainian folk painting. After talking about Ukrainian art styles Prymachenko was surrounded by from birth, We talk about her early life as a peasant, her growing notoriety as her art progressed and developed, (including Picasso "bowing down" to the magnificence of her work), the lasting legacy of her influence memorialized on streets, stamps, coins, and more, and of course, her art, which is without a doubt, a gem of Ukrainian culture and history. The Olympics may have ended, but it's still a chance to reflect back on how music and art are involved in these bi-annual games in a huge way. After discussing the original Olympic games division of Art Competitions and the complications that eventually ended them, we move into how modern Olympic competitions still involve the arts in many ways. We go over the fashion of the Olympics, including notable female designers like Bonnie Cashin, Stella McKartney, and Kim Kardashian. Then we talk about the music of the Olympics including opening ceremonies and performance numbers, touching on The Chicks and Leanne Rhymes, Björk, and Jennifer Thomas. Lastly, we end with the Graphic Design of the Olympics including the invention of pictograms, the medals, wayfinding systems, and Deborah Sussman's iconic 1984 LA Summer Olympic Identity design. It's a great reminder that art involves every aspect of our lives in ways we never think about. Want to check out some of our favorite books?
