Marty and Clif give Frank the movie Anatomy of a Murder to watch. First is Anatomy of a Murder.  A gripping courtroom drama from Otto Preminger starring James Stewart. With standout performances from George C. Scott and Lee Remick, the film pushes boundaries with its themes, sharp dialogue, and unforgettable trial sequences. Then it's on to Breakheart Pass, where Charles Bronson leads a western that turns into a full-on murder mystery. Set aboard a snowbound train, it's less shootout and more whodunit. Think Agatha Christie meets the Old West, with paranoia, twists, and a killer hiding in plain sight.#TalkingPondo #FilmPodcast #MovieReview #ClassicCinema #AnatomyOfAMurder #BreakheartPass #CharlesBronson #JamesStewart Support the showFind our films here:The Love Song of William H ShawRevenge of ZoeWriting Fren-ZeeMaking Pondo on FacebookX (formerly Twitter):@MakingPondoInstagramMaking Pondo on Letterboxd:Season OneSeason TwoSeason ThreeSeason FourTheme Song "The Rain" by Russ PacePhotos by Geoffrey Notkin

Welcome to The Reel Schmooze with ToI film reviewer Jordan Hoffman and host Amanda Borschel-Dan, where we bring you all the entertainment news and film reviews a Jew can use. This week, before diving into the nuts and bolts of the iconic epic Hollywood adventure, we learn how the 1960 film "Exodus" is part of Hoffman's genesis story. Hoffman lays out the film's plot, which is based on a 1958 Leon Uris novel. We learn about director Otto Preminger, who was a very big deal in Tinsel Town during his era, which is how he managed to capture an all-star cast including a dashing Paul Newman, high-heeled Eva Marie Saint, Sal Mineo's fury and the "good Arab" John Derek, whom we recently saw in "The Ten Commandments." We give a big shoutout to Ernest Gold's soundtrack -- as well as the many covers of it. We then hear a sharp criticism from Borschel-Dan on the poor historical accuracy of the film: The real boat, the Exodus 1947, never weighed anchor in Cyprus, where the first third of the film takes place. Hoffman notes that the film raises abiding issues, including ideology pitting brother against brother and the everlasting hope of coexistence in the land. Stick around to see if "Exodus" got an "oy," "meh" or "not bad" in this week's The Reel Schmooze. Those Wonderful People Out There In The Dark

Send us Fan MailWe do enjoy discussing the foundational effect modern directors have on their films --- the whole auteur theory of the style and technique of a director in producing idiosyncratic work. And in film noir, there are plenty of directors who made their reputation in film and the establishment of their hallmark style within the genre. In the last few months, we've visited several such directors who drove deep into the style of film noir --- some later branched out into other work while keeping their significant style. Others plowed a furrow mostly in noir and in retrospect furthered the recognition of the genre itself. To name but a few, we've recently clocked in Fritz Lang, Anthony Mann, Robert Siodmack, and Jules Dassin. You might add Otto Preminger, Jacques Tourneur, and the great Billy Wilder. They brought their characteristic feel to noir and contributed to the idea of the director as author of the entirety of the film --- all else subsumed to their vision. But one of the more impactful and deeply moving of films noir was authored by a director who was an auteur before the phrase was created. A director who was famous and notorious in film – making from his first feature onward. The first feature delivered, by the way, at age 25. A proclaimed genius of film. Many have recognized his first film as perhaps among if not the greatest film in history. He had a nodding acquaintance with films that would be known as noir in later years --- but they merely reflected the fantastic and magical way he saw film and created with cinema. His style was seen across many genres and subject areas --- but it was especially valid for film noir. He was a natural in the movement. His name --- George Orson Welles.Website and blog: www.thosewonderfulpeople.comBluesky: @wonderfulpeople.bsky.social

Movie reviews number fifty nine!
Diving in with the heavy today we have Otto Preminger's (Tell me that you love me, Junie Moon 1970)
Starring Liza Minnelli and Pete Seeger. A very brave and early film with Queer content, and like Boys in the Band, it can get a bit rough.
next is (The Neon Ceiling 1971) “Your Turning Violet, Violet!” Denise Nickerson, Lee Grant, and Gig Young star in this hot mess of a made for tv film.
On to (Sleuth 1972) Two extremely British men talk and meanly prank each other for 2 hours and twenty minutes.
Next up is (Day for Night 1973) Here is a film we are told by all film connoisseurs on the planet that we must love, and fine I guess I do just leave me alone about it. This film reminds me of Opening Night 1977 and I am then reminded how much more I liked that film.
Oh look what's next (Rafferty and the Gold dust Twins 1975) Spoiler alert, if you want a free meal at a fine restaurant, just eat all ya want, walk to another table and gently set it on fire.
Two more left in this batch and here's (Abba the movie 1977) another concert film that got a theatrical release, this one had some big money put into it, annnnnd an actual plot, though it is of the “Freebox” variety.
Finally today we review (Long Journey Back 1978)
Train versus school bus and one students long journey back. So it's obviously light and fun. Cloris mother f'n Leachman is in this films Haus!!!!
thanks for listening friends and if yer new

“MAGGIE McNAMARA: CLASSIC CINEMA STAR OF THE MONTH” - 4/06/2026 (134) The history of Hollywood is filled with stories of actors who experienced meteoric rises and then faded into obscurity just as quickly. Among the most poignant examples of this is the life of MAGGIE McNAMARA, an actress whose career began with remarkable promise but ended in obscurity and tragedy. With her pixie haircut, big doe eyes, lithe frame, and graceful moves, MAGGIE McNAMARA was poised to join the likes of AUDREY HEPBURN and LESLIE CARON as the new stylish gamine that was fashionable in movies in the 1950s. McNamara, who had one of the most auspicious starts in Hollywood history, earning an Academy Award nomination for her very first film, The Moon Is Blue, was a talented, intelligent young woman who had a mind and opinions of her own. And it might have been her strong-willed nature that contributed to her downfall. The final podcast on Have You Ever Seen in Black History Month talks for the 4th time about a movie with a primarily black cast. Otto Preminger often directed Issues Movies and here he's dealing with the Gershwin opera that's all about murder, rape, drug addiction, fishing and poverty…with some racism thrown in there too. Porgy And Bess is set-bound and melodramatic though. Bad print aside, the story and the execution often feel phony. The actors DO sell the passion better than the script or maybe even the original opera does. Sidney Poitier, Dorothy Dandridge, Brock Peters, Diahann Carroll and Sammy Davis Jr. actually do a terrific job with this not-always-effective material. So tune in for this 721st episode as I tackle yet another musical here in 2026: Porgy And Bess. Well, Actually: George Gershwin DID write the song "Summertime" for the 1935 opera, but DuBose Heyward came up with the lyrics. To kick off Black History Month 2026 (which, contrary to the current US administration, is still a thing, and not just on Countermelody, either!), I present to you another Zwischenfach singer, the (mezzo-)soprano Inez Matthews. She was born in Ossining, NY on 23 August 1917 and died in the Bronx on 28 March 2004. She is probably most famous for singing the role of Serena on the legendary 1951 (nearly) complete recording of Porgy and Bess (as well as lending her voice to the 1959 Otto Preminger film) which was conducted by Lehman Engel and starred icons Lawrence Winters and Camilla Williams. She also created the role of Irina in Kurt Weill's Lost in the Stars (opposite Todd Duncan, who created the role of Porgy in 1935). She also sang in the 1952 revival of Virgil Thomson and Gertrude Stein's Four Saints in Three Acts, alongside her brother Edward, who created the role of Saint Ignatius in the work's 1934 premiere. In spite of these impressive credentials, Inez Matthews today is not nearly as well-remembered as, say, either Winters or Williams. In addition to these accomplishments, Matthews also recorded in 1954 Schubert's two major song cycles Schöne Müllerin and Winterreise as well as the posthumous Schwanengesang collection. That as early the mid-1950s Inez Matthews was the first Black artist (and only the second woman after Lotte Lehmann) to record those Schubert cycles, is extroardinary; that her performances are so exceptionally good, lends these recordings more than mere historical value. However, until the song cycles were recently reissued by Parnassus Records as part of their “Black Swans” series, these remained virtually inaccessible to listeners. Today's episode includes selections from almost all the above-mentioned recordings, as well as an exceptional 1953 recording of spirituals accompanied by Jonathan Brice, brother of the esteemed contralto Carol Brice. And let us also tip our hats to Herr Schubert, who just celebrated his 229th birthday! Countermelody is the podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and author yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” At Countermelody's core is the celebration of great singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. Today On Word Balloon Scene Missing takes a deep dive into Otto Preminger's Anatomy of a Murder, the landmark courtroom drama that shattered Hollywood taboos and rewrote how adult themes could be portrayed on screen.Joining me is Chicago radio legend Dan McNeil, known to generations of listeners from WSCR and WMVP, bringing his sharp perspective and cultural memory to the conversation. We break down why Anatomy of a Murder was so controversial in 1950.From its frank sexual dialogue and moral ambiguity to Duke Ellington's groundbreaking jazz score, and why it still feels modern today. McNeil and I examine James Stewart's career-defining performance, George C. Scott's volcanic debut, and Preminger's fearless refusal to spoon-feed the audience easy answers. This isn't just a film-school autopsy. It's a conversation about censorship, masculinity, truth versus storytelling, and how a supposedly “old” movie still punches harder than most modern courtroom dramas. Smart, opinionated, and unapologetically adult.

Enjoy the episode."There are two people in this barracks who know I didn't do it. Me and the guy that did do it."Welcome to the eighth episode of our ongoing series: Fascism On Film. Each episode of this series, the Holmes Brothers look and review a film that has to do with fascism. During the episodes, the brothers look and see how the aspects and portrayal of fascism shown in the film relate to current and/or past events. On this Fascism on Film episode, the Holmes Brothers look at Stalag 17, directed by the great Billy Wilder. It stars William Holden who heads an all-star cast that includes Otto Preminger. Holden won his first and only Oscar for the film. An award he should have already won for Sunset Boulevard and he also should have won for Network. The film is set in a German P.O.W Camp during 1944. We focus on one barracks where American prisoners try to stay sane while the war carries on in the background. They get up to various shenanigans and plan numerous escape plans. Their German captors start to know all their secrets and the prisoners begin to believe one of the men in the barracks is an informant for the Germans. Suspicion falls on Sefton, Holden's character, a cynical man who makes bets and openly barters with the Germans for special privileges. Beginning with Otto Preminger's The Cardinal in 1963—an ordinary 35mm film that stunned audiences when projected in 70mm—the episode explores how Panavision, Eastman Kodak, and Technicolor worked together to create a process so convincing that even seasoned projectionists mistook it for true 65mm photography. From the widescreen arms race of the 1950s to the golden era of roadshow presentations, we trace how exhibitors' demand for spectacle drove the development of blow-up technology. The episode examines the birth of Dolby 70mm six-track magnetic sound, the introduction of the famous “baby boom” bass channels, and how these innovations laid the foundation for the 5.1 and 7.1 systems we use in home cinemas today. The Movie Collector You Tube Channel:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KBss6hGjKeMIn 70mm Website:https://www.in70mm.comMusic: https://www.musicbed.com

I was delighted to welcome Longworth to the latest episode of The Last Thing I Saw to discuss her selection of filmmakers and their often idiosyncratic later works, including Frank Capra, Stanley Donen, John Ford, Otto Preminger, and William Wyler. She also makes a pick or two of contemporary directors we might consider in their twilight today... Long an antagonist to Hollywood's norms (not to mention its actresses), Preminger began the 1960s by directing a massive blockbuster (Exodus) and earning his second Oscar nomination (for directing The Cardinal). But towards the end of the decade, with 1967's Hurry, Sundown, he began a run of six films which attempted to respond to changing times, all of which flopped. We'll focus primarily on two of these: the much-maligned Skidoo, an indictment of both hippies and the true American establishment which Preminger prepared for by dropping acid with Timothy Leary; and the unfairly forgotten Such Good Friends, the rare sex comedy of the era to understand the extent to which the sexual revolution did little to liberate women from the expectations of men. Jean Seberg made her first two films, Saint Joan and Bonjour Tristesse, for director Otto Preminger, a tyrannical svengali character whose methods would traumatize Jean for the rest of her life and career. No wonder she rebelled against this bad dad figure by marrying a handsome French opportunist. Meanwhile, Jane Fonda moves to New York, joins the Actors Studio, takes up with her own hyper-controlling male partner, and tries to define herself as something other than Henry Fonda's daughter. In 1960, Otto Preminger provoked controversy with his movie Exodus. Based on Leon Uris’s novel, it provides a fictional account of Jewish refugees emigrating to Palestine after World War II. The film concludes with the bodies of a young European-Jewish girl and an Arab man, both murder victims, buried in the same grave in what will soon be the nation of Israel. Preminger leaves the conclusion to us. Is this a metaphor for despair, a dream forever buried? Or is it a symbol of hope, as two peoples with a history of hatred and hostilities come together—in death and in life? Perhaps the sons of Korah, credited with writing Psalm 87, would take the latter view of this scene. They anticipated a peace we still await. Of Jerusalem, they wrote, “Glorious things are said of you, city of God” (v. 3). They sang of a day when nations—all with a history of warring against the Jewish people—will come together to acknowledge the one true God: Rahab (Egypt), Babylon, the Philistines, Tyre, Cush (v. 4). All will be drawn to Jerusalem, and to God. The conclusion of the psalm is celebratory. People in Jerusalem will sing, “All my fountains [springs] are in you” (v. 7). Who are they singing of? The One who is the Living Water, the Source of all life (John 4:14). Jesus is the only one who can bring lasting peace and unity.
