Angela is DEFINITELY over Jordan this week, honest, swear to God. Except then she discovers that he can barely read, and decides it's her mission to help him... which conveniently provides a reason to ask him out on a date. (To see a movie with subtitles. Good thinking, Angela.) Meanwhile, Graham and Patty discover they might or might not be pregnant, and grapple with the implications of Schrodinger's zygote. And as if this show didn't have enough doomed crushes, Danielle decides she's got eyes for Brian Krakow.Helping me make sense of it all this week is my guest Liz Krott -- a television postproduction producer and mother of actual teenagers! And also one of me and James' closest friends since we were teenagers ourselves. There's a double-feature of drama on this week's episode, as rumors and innuendo swirl around two separate calamities: After a gun goes off during class, only Brian Krakow can reveal the parties involved — but he's not talking; and gossip about Angela's dalliance with Jordan reaches Patty's ears, to everyone's mortification. Plus, Rickie gains some unexpected depth! And we meet Rayanne's mom, a lady of seemingly endless thrills.I'll be chatting with the wonderful Anthony Oliveira (Dayspring, Captain America, Wiccan & Hulkling) about how this episode unlocked his long-buried memories of the 90s, Catholic school crushes, and the time he ran away from home. And then James enters the fray and we muse about Brian's strange (and fleeting) bravery, our own spotty sex-ed experiences, and the one (and maybe only) time I ever frightened someone.Check out Anthony's book Dayspring.Join me on Patreon at patreon.com/mattbaume — all paying Patrons have access to the Discord server for our weekly watch-alongs.Leave a review of Matt's So-Cast Pod on iTunes.Music by Caleb Martin - www.MartinMusicMedia.com
Content warning: Juliet, Mandy, and the guests discuss 'Felicity' Episodes 107 and 108, which depict rape. In the years since the episodes “Drawing the Line: Part 1” and "Part 2" (107 and 108) aired on the WB, they have remained the most progressive ones. Juliet enlists The Ringer's Joanna Robinson to talk about why those episodes have endured both because of and despite the difficult topic of rape. Next, Mandy joins Juliet to discuss some behind-the-scenes context, and finally, Devon Gummersall joins the show to talk about the duality of playing Pink Guy on Felicity and Brian Krakow on 'My So-Called Life.' Gummersall reflects on how playing both guys impacted his career overall. Next time: Episodes 109-112. Watch on Hulu. It's hard to say goodbye so we're prolonging the pain with an extra episode! We speak German, climb tall buildings, break up 20 year marriages and commit vehicular homicide. It really is the end of My So-Called Life.
We were joking before, but now we really do have a Professor with us. It's Patrice Oppliger, PhD (for real this time) of Boston University and we are wrapping up season 5 of Single Season Record with this Krakow-friendly episode. So, so Krakow friendly. Why do you make it so easy to say goodbye, My So-Called Life?
Hulu can try, but My So-Called Life may prove unspoilable.
It's Christmas time and My So-Called Life is here to bum you out.
It's Sesame Street vs. The Ramones and the winner is, as always, Danielle Chase.
You gotta keep your eye on the prize, whether that prize is a comet or a dumb idiot with soft hair.
All Buffalo Tom wanted to do was gear up for their opening spot on the Lemonheads tour and now they will only be remembered for getting Jordan and Angela together. More importantly though: math tests.
What is love? (Brian don't hurt me.) It's a Brian Krakow takeover and Nate Runkel is here to work out some of his own stuff. Tipper Newton doesn't remember much but maybe that's just the brain protecting itself. Questionable music choices, terrible ADR and more Brian Krakow than anyone ever wanted in their lives. It's My So-Called Life Of Brian!
It's Halloween! And you can be anything you want to be and you chose disaffected ghost.
Carrie Gillogly, PhD, MSCL and television writer Richard Monahan join us this week to explore the inadequacies of the Pittsburgh school system and the general act of being annoying in the 90s.
This may be the worst episode of My So-Called Life, but don't worry, Derick makes up for it by bringing up Robin Hood: Men In Tights a lot. Like a lot. @ThatsSoLampy @KevynSchmidt @DerickArmijo @SingleSeasonTV singleseasonrecord@gmail.com
Can you win an Emmy without tears? Is the IRS our collective daddy? What is the name of this episode? How do you say Reef Break? Ashley Sutton and Sulia Altenberg are with us this week to answer all of these questions and more.

Tread Perilously begins a month of Halloween episodes with a look at My So-Called Life's "Halloween." Although discouraged in her own mind to wear a costume at school, Angela Chase ends up dressed a teen from 1963 -- the same year Nicky Driscoll supposedly died while trying to hang something from the rafters in the gym. Inspired by the story, Rayanne Graff convinces everybody (and Tino) to meet up at the school and do some sort of prank in Driscoll's honor. But when Tino fails to appear, she, Angela, and Brian Krakow invade the school anyway. And once inside, Angela comes face-to-face with Nicky Driscoll. Justin wants to know more about Tino. Erik's dislike of Brian Krakow and Jordan Catalano re-emerges. He also admits to dating someone a lot like Rayanne Graff. Geography Corner centers on photogenic Los Angeles area high schools. Justin recognizes Lindsay Sloane in a small role. The pair also try to get back into 1990s speech patterns. Justin reveals an unlikely character as his favorite. Erik's habit of low-effort Halloween costumes comes up again. Justin tries to make sense of Brian Krakow. Both devise a new suburban thriller film for Claire Danes and the pushback against genuine emotions in the era gets examined or, like, something.
It Happened One Year famously broke down NBC's cross-sitcom promotion of November 3rd, 1994, "Blackout Thursday", way back in Episode 13, but then wondered, what were the counter offerings on that fateful night of television? This unearthed the insane ABC pairing of the legendary high school drama My So-Called Life and the elderly courtroom antics of Matlock - which brought up a lot of questions. Sarah & Joe get to the bottom of this bonkers slate of TV, looking at the 10th MSCL "Other People's Mothers" and the 180th Matlock "The Tabloid". The critical reception to the teen drama is reviewed, plus possible reasons it didn't last beyond that first season, plot elements introduced and discarded, the raw erotic appeal of Brian Krakow, and, of course, that Jordan Catalano can't read. No such wide-ranging breakdown is afforded Matlock, as the hosts question whether this wackadoo episode is typical of the show or was this a glorious one-off in its final season, featuring three separate instances of Ben singing coupled with possible extra-terrestrial sexual trysts, broken up by discussions of the characters' favorite sandwiches. Brief interludes abound, throwing time to the CBS and FOX schedules of the same night, the abrupt ALF finale, what METV stands for, and can you instinctively know which network aired a particular show. They won't be covering November 3rd television again (or will they??), so come get the comprehensive look at this singular day in broadcast history with this incongruous thirty-third episode!

It's the weekend from hell (OR THE BEST WEEKEND EVER?!) over at the Chase residence. So, Graham and Patty go away to "reconnect" for the weekend and leave Angela and Danielle alone (WE GET SOME DANIELLE VOICEOVER YOU GUYS). While Patty and Graham try to deal with Graham's brother Neil and his new high pitched girlfriend Cheryl (PATTY CHOOSES TO GET HAMMERED AND IT'S AMAZING), Angela has to deal with Rayanne, who is tied to her parents bed because she found the handcuffs that Camille Cherski gave Patty to help rekindle her marriage but Patty left them at home AND LOOK WHAT HAPPENED. Angela recruits Rickie, Sharon, and even Brian Krakow to help get Rayanne free while Patty nurses the worst hangover OF HER LIFE. And we're here for every last second of it.
This week we're discussing shows with narrators -- and that one episode where they change it up. Does it work? Do we care what Brian Krakow thinks? Is it hard to be a woman in any workplace? Halloween rolls into Three Rivers (IS THAT THE NAME OF THEIR TOWN?), blurring the line between facades and realities (AND INTRODUCING STRAIGHT UP TIME TRAVEL). When Patty and Graham venture to buy costumes on Halloween day (FROM THE MAYOR OF HALLOWEEN HERSELF), a pirate costume and a Rapunzel costume are all they can find; serendipitously, it leads the couple to passionate role-playing (IN A SCENE THAT SHOULDN’T BE SEXY BUT SOMEHOW IS). Danielle (WHO STILL HASN’T BEEN SHIPPED OFF TO BOARDING SCHOOL) dresses as Angela and goes trick-or-treating with Sharon. Angela, meanwhile, dresses as a schoolgirl from the early 1960s (AND LOOKS FABULOUS). After learning of Nicky Driscoll, a student who had died in the early '60s in the school, she, with Rayanne and Rickie, decides to break into the school on Halloween night. Brian Krakow (SWOON) shows up as well and facilitates the break-in. While there, Brian Krakow comforts the achluophobic (WHAT ON EARTH DOES ACHLUOPHOBIC MEAN?) Rayanne in the basement while Angela sees visions of Nicky Driscoll and the events leading up to his death (THE AFOREMENTIONED TIME TRAVEL). The experience gives Angela the motivation to convince Jordan Catalano not to let his teachers define his life for him.
Patty must deal with her father (SHE MUST!), whose printing business she now runs, when the IRS decides to do an audit (BY THE PINE-SOL LADY!!). Patty makes a variety of suggestions, all of which go unheard by her unyielding father (WHO IS THE WORST). Meanwhile, Angela and Graham's relationship is also strained as Angela gives Graham the silent treatment (GRAHAM, YOU KNOW WHAT YOU DID!) Graham gives Angela and Rayanne tickets to the Grateful Dead (SNOOZE!) but Angela (THINKING ONLY OF HERSELF) scalps them, angering (OR, LIKE, DEVASTATING) Rayanne. Rayanne has no father figure (BUT SHE HAS AMBER VALLONE!) and appreciates her interactions with Graham. Angela hides in Brian Krakow's car (HIS DREAM COME TRUE!) in order to make her dad think she went to the concert, knowing that he would be disappointed to learn she didn't (BECAUSE HE’S THE WORST DAD EVER!), but he discovers the truth, and gives her the silent treatment. In the end, Graham asks Angela what kind of music she likes (AND THE ANSWERS ARE SURPRISINGLY INTERESTING).
Here we are with our last Suesie pick for the month! My So Called Life! A joyously and sometimes painfully realistic telling of a young high school girl's life as portrayed by Claire Danes. With her friends Rayanne and Ricky and her parents Graham and Patty. Also a little sister whose name escapes me at the moment. Also there's the chunkhead dreamboat Jordan Catalano played by Jared Leto before he was ruined by the Joker and reliable best friend forever Brian Krakow. Also on this episode Suesie gets righteously angry about the overuse of the Diary of Anne Frank in teen media. Frank is unsure Suesie knows where the Eiffel Tower is. Intro and outro is the My So Called Life theme song. Please rate, review and subscribe on iTunes. Questions, comments and concerns hit us up at realteengirltalk@gmail.com. Jordan Catalano and Angela sitting in a tree, K I S S I N G...oh, wait, that's just Brian Krakow in the tree, reading a book with flashlight as any normal, non-creepy teenager would do. My So-Called Life was an hour long drama on ABC that ran from 1994 to 1995, and was canceled after only one season, but should it have been? The show picked up a cult following after it was canceled. Two members of that cult are Rodrigo and Brian. Rodrigo and Brian explain how they tried to be Jordan Catalano in high school (spoiler alert! they both failed), and Brian, for some reason, details his father's DIY approach to dental work. Come check out Rodrigo and Brian's so-called podcast to see if My So-Called Life gets a new lease on so-called life.
Hey listeners- Jon here. On this episode, Brian and I discussed some hot topics (including is one slur worse than another slur), and whether or not the actor who plays Brian Krakow is gay in real life (he isn’t…or is … Continue reading →
