I Puffi".See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

For half a century, the US-Soviet rivalry pitted the two most powerful nations in human history against one another other in a conflict that had the potential to end civilization. The fact that the Cold War ended without the doomsday scenarios so many had predicted is testament to the power of good diplomacy, and good diplomacy only happens when you have good diplomats. In this episode we speak with Jack Matlock, a diplomat whose 35 years in the State Department culminated in his selection by Ronald Reagan to serve as US Ambassador to the Soviet Union in the final years of the Cold War, where he played a key role in transforming US-Soviet relations. Last week, the Trump Administration cut over 1,350 positions in the US State Department, many of them held by dedicated, knowledgeable and experienced foreign service experts who have sacrificed a great deal to serve our country abroad. We hope that by sharing our conversation with Ambassador Matlock, you'll better appreciate the crucial work done by our diplomatic corp and why we'd all be better off if the Trump administration reconsidered its drastic cuts to the state department. This is an abridged version of RTN episode #50, which was recorded live at Middle Tennessee State University and originally aired on March 28, 2017. An unabridged video version of this episode is available on our YouTube page by clicking here. This reair was edited by Ben Sawyer.

Skye P. Marshall is an Air Force veteran, Hollywood actress, caregiver, and relentless dreamer. With no agent, no connections, and no backup plan, Skye left the military and a corporate cubicle behind to pursue acting + built a thriving career from scratch. This episode is about the radical belief that you don't need permission to begin– just vision, discipline, and the courage to build it brick by brick. Skye shares: Why fear is a biological superpower + how to channel it How the Air Force trained her for acting more than any drama school What she learned doing 7 years of background work How she booked Matlock with no agent The reason she refuses to set a timeline for success The “red towel red carpets” that sparked her childhood dreams How she bought her mom a house while caregiving through dementia Why imagination is the key to reinvention The mindset shift that changed everything: from “acting” to being Why every job—even catering—can be a strategic career move And the mantra that carries her through it all: “Survive until you thrive.” Follow Skye P. “The most important thing that I've learned as a storyteller is that I have to treat every character in the show as though they're the lead in the show, and they are never doing anything so that I can prompt a move from another character. They are doing things that are true to what they want and their motivation. So that's what makes that architecture hard, because you know you want things to happen, but they have to happen coming out of character, not coming out of what the room wants to see happen. So it's like the merging of those two. We know what architecture we want, but if it doesn't feel true to the character, the character wouldn't do it. Every time, you've got to say no, even though it's tempting, because that is who you have to protect – your characters,” says Jennie Snyder Urman, creator and showrunner of Matlock, about creating story architecture in a series. On today's episode, we talk with Jennie Snyder Urman, who created the reboot of Matlock starring Kathy Bates as Madeline Matlock. We chat about reinventing the beloved character once played by Andy Griffith, the joy of building a show around an older female lawyer and the generational changes in social attitudes women experience, and the sacrifices women often make when it comes to sexual harassment, including Matty herself. “[Matty] realizes now, coming back [to the legal profession], what it cost her. And it's not like every day she was thinking about it. It was just, ‘Oh my gosh, I made these changes to avoid this. And why do I have to make these changes? Why didn't that person make the changes so I could be in the space where I was comfortable?' And I think what's so exciting about Maddie is that she's still learning new things at 75. I think there's also a little bit of a wish fulfillment, that you can still evolve, and you still learn, and you still feel new things,” says Urman. To hear more about Matlock, what we can expect from season 2, and Urman's advice for writers, listen to the podcast.

"Millions of girls will grow up thinking that this is the right way to act. That they can never be anything more than vacuous ninnies whose only goal is to look pretty, land a rich husband, and spend all day on the phone with their equally vacuous friends talking about how damn terrific it is to look pretty and have a rich husband!" - Lisa Simpson Malibu Stacy speaks for the first time, and her sexist sound bites inspire Lisa to track down the doll's creator and develop a feminist alternative. CBS also boasted eight of the top 10 most-watched programs, including new show hits Matlock and Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage. Freshman Shows Boost Time Slots: New series like CBS's reboot of Matlock and ABC's High Potential and Shifting Gears improved their respective time slots' viewership. Matlock became the season's most-watched new series, while Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage was the top comedy. Reboots and Spinoffs Rule: The season leaned heavily on familiar franchises. Examples include CBS's NCIS: Origins (a prequel to NCIS), Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage (a Young Sheldon spinoff), and NBC's Happy's Place (starring Reba McEntire, echoing her sitcom roots). This reflects a cautious approach by networks, favoring known brands over original concepts. Long-Running Shows Keep Going: Iconic animated series on Fox, like The Simpsons (renewed through its 40th season), Family Guy (through its 27th season), and Bob's Burgers (through its 19th season), continued their historic runs, cementing their status as cultural staples. The CW's Reboot Continues: The CW, now under new management, focused on sports and unscripted content, airing NASCAR Xfinity Series races and shows like Totally Funny Animals. It also renewed scripted series like Sullivan's Crossing for a third season, signaling a shift from its former teen-drama-heavy identity. Broadcast TV Still Draws Older Viewers: Social media chatter on X suggested younger audiences are drifting from broadcast TV, with “boomers” as the primary viewers. This perception aligns with complaints about repetitive genres (cop, lawyer, doctor shows) and a lack of risk-taking, though hits like Tracker and High Potential still pulled diverse viewers.
