We're celebrating one full year of being unlikely partners on the podcast beat by finally getting around to what we've been told is one of the all-time great buddy cop movies. Yes it's 1989's Tango & Cash, directed by a three-headed monster of directors on a deeply troubled production but overseen in post-production by Demolition Man editor Stuart Baird, and starring Sylvester Stallone, Kurt Russell, Jack Palance, Teri Hatcher, Brion James, James Hong, Michael J. Pollard, Robert Z'Dar, Lewis Arquette, Eddie Bunker and Clint Howard. No sense sugar-coating it, she doesn't want it to be a secret: Hayley hated this movie. But J Mo still makes the case for its not-so-guilty pleasures, and we reflect on a full year of doing the show. Of course, with the Oscars on Sunday we also take a quick minute to make our picks in the major categories, leading Justin to discover that while he's now seen 100 films from 2023, he's somehow missed almost all the Oscar movies. Embarrassing. We're going heavy on Oppenheimer. Big surprise.  Other works discussed in this episode include Dune: Part Two, Robin Hood: Men In Tights,  Spaceballs, The Princess Bride, The Emperor's New Groove, Beauty and the Beast,  Aladdin, The Lion King, The Voyeurs, Deep Water, Nocturne, The Perfection, Tenet, The Fast Franchise, First Blood, Rocky, Thief, The Rocketeer, Dick Tracy, Cobra, and Under Siege 2: Dark Territory. We'll be back next week to kick off a new campaign as we're joined by Briarpatch publisher and all-around good dude John Cameron to discuss the 1972 Robert Redford political satire The Candidate, which is currently available to watch in its entirety for free on YouTube. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

Tentative deal reached to avoid government shutdown; comedian Richard Lewis dies; McConnell will step down as Senate GOP leader

On the version of Hot off the Wire posted Feb. 29 at 7:15 a.m. CT: WASHINGTON (AP) — Congressional leaders have announced a tentative agreement to prevent a government shutdown, for now. Wednesday's deal comes days before an end-of-the-week deadline that risked shuttering some federal operations. Under the plan, Congress would temporarily extend funding for one set of federal agencies through March 8 and for another through March 22. In the meantime, Congress will try to draft and pass packages of legislation to fund the government for the remainder of the budget year. Notably missing is a $95 billion emergency package for Ukraine, Israel and Indo-Pacific allies, which remains stubbornly stalled. Hard-right Republicans want steeper spending reductions. Voting in the House is expected Thursday, right before Friday's deadline when some federal monies run out. RAFAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — Witnesses say Israeli troops fired on a crowd of Palestinians waiting for aid in Gaza City. According to healthy officials, more than 100 people were killed, bringing the death toll since the start of the Israel-Hamas war to more than 30,000. WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden and Donald Trump are both heading to the U.S.-Mexico border in Texas. On Thursday, the two will be there and have chosen optimal locations from which to make their respective points. WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court's decision to consider whether Donald Trump can face prosecution in his federal 2020 election interference case injects immediate uncertainty into the legal and political calendar over the next several months. Wednesday's decision raises the potential that a trial could collide with the final stretch of the 2024 election — but also the potential that a trial that had initially been set for March might not take place this year at all. The Supreme Court will decide a legally untested question: whether former presidents are immune from prosecution for official acts they take in office. WASHINGTON (AP) — The Biden administration will investigate potential national security risks posed by Chinese-made “smart cars” that can gather sensitive information about Americans driving them. NEW YORK (AP) — Richard Lewis, an acclaimed comedian known for exploring his neuroses in frantic, stream-of-consciousness diatribes while dressed in all-black, leading to his nickname “The Prince of Pain,” has died. He was 76. A regular performer in clubs and on late-night TV for decades, Lewis also played Marty Gold, the romantic co-lead opposite Jamie Lee Curtis, in the ABC series “Anything But Love” and the reliably neurotic Prince John in “Mel Brooks’ Robin Hood: Men In Tights.” He re-introduced himself to a new generation opposite Larry David in HBO’s “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” kvetching regularly. WASHINGTON (AP) — Mitch McConnell says he'll step down as Senate Republican leader in November. The 82-year-old Kentucky lawmaker is the longest-serving Senate leader in history. He's maintained his power in the face of dramatic changes in the Republican Party. He made the announcement Wednesday on the Senate floor. In other headlines: An appellate judge refuses to halt Trump's $454 million fraud penalty while he appeals. Rep. Lauren Boebert's son facing possible felony charges in string of vehicle break-ins. Luka Doncic celebrates his birthday with a triple-double, Tyrese Haliburton keeps the Pacers from blowing a big lead, LeBron James rallies the Lakers from a huge fourth-quarter deficit, college football's playoff looks to expand again, Caitlin Clark adds another record to her resume, and the Saudi Arabian government looks to invest in another North American sport.  Kirk Cousins and Chris Jones head an NFL free agents list filled with star-quality players. Anheuser-Busch and Teamsters reach a labor agreement that avoids a strike. Chrysler is recalling more than 330,000 Jeep Grand Cherokees due to steering wheel issue. New Yorkers morn Flaco and want a statue, while lawmakers want bird safe buildings. Fired scientists in Canada failed to acknowledge links to China, newly released records say. —The Associated Press About this program Host Terry Lipshetz is managing editor of the national newsroom for Lee Enterprises. Acomi and Turk182 take a trip into the Multiverse of the DCEU (Detective Comics Extended Universe) to see some of the worlds we won't ever truly get a chance to visit. In this case, the two hop on the time treadmill and go back to 2011 to watch the David E. Kelley created unaired Wonder Woman TV pilot. Starring Adrianne Palicki (John Wick, The Orville, Marvel's Agents of SHIELD) as Wonder Woman a.k.a. Princess Diana a.k.a. Diana Prince a.k.a. Diana of Themyscira, Cary Elwes (Princess Bride, Saw, Robin Hood Men In Tights), Elizabeth Hurley (Bedazzled, Passenger 51, Austin Powers), Tracie Thoms (Death Proof, Looper), and Pedro Pascal (Wonder Woman 1984, Mandalorian, The Last of Us). The pilot is set in a world where Wonder Woman already exists and is known figure and vigilante. She's also the chairwoman of her own company, which works to improve the world. In this world, Diana Prince is the alter-ego that WW slips into when she wants to get out of the public eye. A "normal" woman, with a "normal" life. Her rival is Veronica Cale (Hurley) who has been experimenting with a body enhancing drug that is kind of illegal; or maybe just in the testing phase. When more and more of the drug's users start to die, Wonder Woman decides to bring Veronica Cale and her pharmaceutical company down, her way. Her way is illegal vigilante force and killing hired goons. Join Acomi and Turk as they wrap a gold rope around themselves and talk about how hot Adrianne Palicki is. And, in between, judge a TV pilot that wasn't spectacular, but could've been shaped into something fun and entertaining. Still a ton better than Wonder Woman 1984. Let's Watch Wonder Woman TV pilot (2011). Acomi and Turk182, along the occasional special guest, provide running commentary of awfulsome movie and TV shows. The hosts select movies that either one, or both, have never seen. All jokes and comments are improvised. NO PREPARED JOKES OR COMMENTS! During recording, the movies are watched at a low volume and with the subtitles on. Viewers may want to turn subtitles on as well to enhance the viewing experience. So, cue up the audio, ready the movie, and hit play when we say so. Note: This video is the commentary recorded by Acomi and Turk182. The commentary can be enjoyed on its own, but if you want to experience the Let's Watch! in all its glory, you'll need your own copy of the movie. MUTINY! is the winner of BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY at the July 2022 LA COMEDY Film Festival. Conversation with director Matthew Gratzner who is a fountain of insight with his multiple years working in the industry on many top film productions. Project Links; http://mutinyshortfilm.com/ https://www.twitter.com/MutinyShort https://www.instagram.com/MutinyShortFilm Director Biography - Matthew Gratzner Matthew's foray into entertainment started in theater growing up in Miami, Florida, where he dove headfirst into writing, directing and acting— ever the resourceful artist, he also designed and built costumes, sets and props to further his vision. Leaving Miami to pursue filmmaking in Los Angeles, Matthew started briefly as an actor, acquiring his SAG card in Mel Brooks' Robin Hood: Men In Tights. Realizing quickly his passion was directing, he shifted to working behind the camera. Opportunities led to work in visual effects where he flourished as an art director, visual effects supervisor and co-founder of the Academy Award winning, New Deal Studios, Inc. (www.newdealstudios.com). Between VFX projects Matthew directed several commercials and short films. After a number of successful years, Matthew decided to leave VFX to focus solely on writing and directing. Then the opportunity with the film, The Aviator, started a 10 year relationship with Martin Scorsese as a key member of Rob Legato's VFX team as Visual Effects/Miniature Effects Supervisor as well as Visual Effects Art Director. Matthew was integral to creating scenes such as the horrific plane crash in The Aviator, the many subtle effects shots in The Departed, realizing the eerie environments for Shutter Island, and creating the epic train crash in Hugo. He received a BAFTA nomination for The Aviator for best VFX, and Emmy nomination for best VFX on the Tom Hanks/HBO miniseries From the Earth to the Moon. Matthew also received a Clio and a Cannes Golden Lion for commercials as well as multiple VES Awards. Matthew is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. While Matthew never attended film school, he felt being on set with Martin Scorsese was a master class in filmmaking— which encouraged his passion to create content— pioneering cinematic virtual reality and co-writing and directing two independent feature films currently in post. Matthew loves and feels most comfortable working with actors-- and thinks that while visual effects, art direction and stunt work are all extremely important visually—without the emotion of compelling characters and a strong story, a project's success is diminished greatly. Matthew also has several projects in development with his latest company, Proof of Concept Entertainment, Inc. Bust out your best hosiery, we're singing songs and telling raunchy jokes while reviewing Robin Hood: Men In Tights (1993). An early 90s parody film based on the tried and true (and sometimes predictable) tale of Robin Hood and his merry men, particularly the infamous blunder from 1991. Filled to the brim with original movie references, tropes, and over-the-top acting, this flick is definitely chaos in a barely contained bottle. Though we have to ask, does a comedy about thieves in tights still hit a perfect bullseye? Or should some spoofs just leave the classics alone? Let's find out together!

We steal from the rich and give to ourselves as we review the non-seminal ROBIN HOOD: MEN IN TIGHTS. Another entry from Mel Brooks in the books, does this movie hold up to his other classics??  Scott then digs into his history books and uncovers one of the oldest novelty songs in history: I'VE DULLED THY SWORD, THE SQUIRE'S JAPE! Finally, Marty traps his co-hosts inside the studio, walls them inside, and challenges them to escape the podcast studio (after discussing a pack of EDGAR ALLEN POE BANDAGES)!

Grammar authorities say both “champing at the bit” and “chomping at the bit” are fine to use. Jake was wrong about how to write Weird Al’s name. The quotes go around “Weird Al” not just “Weird”. Weird, right? Weird Al songs (and videos) discussed include “Eat It”, “White & Nerdy”, “Tacky”, “Amish Paradise”, “Fat” and “Lasagna”. And of course we couldn’t skip his polka medleys (including “The Hamilton Polka”). Efrem tells a story about bonding over Weird Al with George Rebelo from Hot Water Music. George is a great guy and amazing drummer. Hot Water Music is one of the best bands ever. Chamillionaire retired from rapping and is now a venture capitalist in Santa Monica. Here he is over a John Tesh sample and here he is on an extremely 2005 Scott Storch beat. People forget his breakout hit was about racial profiling. We couldn’t find footage online of the MTV show Death By Stereo did with Coolio, but here’s an old post on punknews.org that proves it happened. Roast battle champion Mike Lawrence has a take on Spaceballs similar to Phil's wife's. We discuss the works of Mel Brooks, including Young Frankenstein, Blazing Saddles and Robin Hood: Men In Tights. Rick Moranis is at his best in Ghostbusters. Bill Pullman is at his best in Independence Day. He belongs in the air. We name-check lots of cartoon characters that one might find on an oversized t-shirt, including Taz, Betty Boop, Tweety Bird, Elmer Fudd and Foghorn Leghorn. There’s also mention of Yosemite Sam mudflaps. Phil & Jake both looked for evidence of Michael Bivins wearing WB merchandise, and couldn't find it. That doesn't mean it doesn't exist. It might be that he was too grown-up by the time these shirts came about. We're men. We're men in tight, TIGHT, tights. Robin Hood Men In Tights from 1993, is another Mel Brooks film we grew up quoting the hell out of in our youth! Spoofing the very spoofable Robin Hood Prince of Thieves (and many other films), this movie flew right over our heads in the 90s but we loved it nonetheless. From Cary Elwes, snooty yet heroic Robin, adorable Blinkin, the worst blind man ever, and even Maid Marion's ratty, red curly wig, we love it all! We'll talk about whether we think this or Spaceballs is our favorite Mel Brook's film, go over all our favorite scenes and lines, sing some merry men jams, and get right down to the everyone's favorite topic; chastity belts and what the fuck stop trying to control women's sexuality, you medieval assholes!

This week, Uri introduces a guest host, Miki Friedmann, good friend of Talking Tachlis! They review the Man Seder conversation, and then discuss Rachel Delia Benaim's personal piece in the Forward, about her changing relationship with Orthodox Judaism, in which she argues that there's a new category of millennial Modern Orthodox Jewry - one that cares about Judaism, and Orthodoxy, but is less focused on legalism. Miki and Uri ask, does the Orthodox Jewish community really have a responsibility to include everyone? And, going further, they ask, what does it mean to be "religious" today?
