Govier and Steve are here though and they have a few thoughts roughly 48 hours after the polls closed on Election Day 2024 in the bozo USA. The first 25 minutes has plenty of talk about what happened there, but there are also plenty of other goodies on this week's show including an email from our old friend Mr. Pink! We love you all! This talk show is not the same without you listening & emailing us your highly entertaining & thoroughly analyzed thoughts. We close the show with Fountain & Fairfax by The Afghan Whigs. Recorded in May and July 2024 at Afterlife Studios in Vancouver, "Graystone" was produced by Brian Minato and the band, with mixing by Dave Ogilivie and mastering by Ronan Chris Murphy at Veneto West. Since their formation in 2012, SLIPons have established themselves as a powerful, guitar-driven band from Vancouver, BC, blending influences from the Exile on Main St. era of the Stones and the Afghan Whigs. With a history marked by acclaim, their last album, "Heavy Machinery," garnered significant attention, spending seven weeks on College Radio across North America and receiving support from impressive broadcasters like KXLU (Los Angeles, CA), WFMU (Jersey City, NJ), WUTK (Knoxville, TN), and WXAV (Chicago, IL), along with coverage from numerous outlets including Global News, True Skateboarding, and Exclaim. As anticipation builds for "Graystone," SLIPons continue to solidify their place in the power-pop and alt-rock landscape. The band plans to complete more recordings and videos in the months ahead and announce North American tour dates for 2024 and 2025. Baxie talks to one of his all time favorites—multi-instrumentalist Harold “Happy” Chichester! Happy's incredible career began with the Columbus, Ohio based band The Royal Crescent Mob! This was a band that was (and continues to) to hold a special place in my home collection of entirely too many records. But his career hardly stopped there. He was a one-time member of The Afghan Whigs, The Twilight Singers, and Howlin' Maggie! On top of that he's release three amazing solo records. He was also heavily courted by Dave Grohl to join The Foo Fighters (an offer he turned down to keep working on his own music). Grohl has even referred to him as one of the best songwriters in America (which I agree with!). It's a special episode with a guy that I've wanted to talk to for the last 40 years. And it was totally worth the wait!!! Listen on Apple Podcasts, SoundCloud, Spotify, and on the Rock102 app Brought to you by Metro Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram of Chicopee

The Art of Longevity

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 20, 2024 55:41

After 25 years in the music business, both as a major label priority artist and as a jobbing musician, Ed Harcourt still has big ambitions. “My greatest achievement would be to write a song I would never get bored of singing”.Cards on the table, Ed Harcourt's two instrumental albums made between 2018 and 2020 (Beyond the End and Monochrome to Colour) got me through the pandemic. Well, they certainly helped. But Ed didn't sing on either, so it comes as something of a relief to have Ed Harcourt back in the world of songs. Not only that, but his best batch of songs for a while - held together on a cracker of a new album El Magnifico. It is quite possibly the best album he has ever made. The question is, will enough people get to hear it?Harcourt was first signed to Heavenly Records, which was subsumed into the EMI empire of old, where he was a priority UK artist for a while - thrust into the eye of the needle. But the chart positions never came, the pressure mounted, and, inevitably, Harcourt moved on into the second phase of his career as an independent artist. These days, his view of ‘the industry' is understandably jaded. “I went a bit mad. I had been institutionalised. I felt done. It still feels like a rollercoaster, but I can't do anything else”. His solo albums as an independent artist have impressed critics and fans - especially Furnaces (2016) - but commercial success has been elusive, and Furnaces left him burnt out and in need of a change (hence the ‘neo classical phase' that followed).Harcourt remains an active collaborator, however, producing albums for Kathryn Williams and Sophie Ellis Bexter, whom with Ed co-wrote on her last three albums. He is now working with emerging artist Roxanne De Bastion. In many ways, it is surprising he is not more in demand as a producer, although by his own admission, he will never be motivated to do anything within a million miles of what you might call a trend. Meanwhile, he tours with cult Ohio indie band The Afghan Whigs and is waiting for some film score projects to drop. But, for an ambitious artist, is that success?“Success is working. Just making music all the time. I am proud but dismissive. Something will come, but I just don't know what, yet…”Harcourt now makes music with the battle scars of an artist who has been through the mangle. He rode the hype cycle - signing a five album deal to a major, experiencing the fallout from that, and steadily rebuilding to a place where he can always make music for himself.  In particular on El Magnifico, there is a bouncy, upbeat ‘single' in Strange Beauty, while Deathless is a throwback to the classic days of album songs - a centrepiece if you will. Broken Keys is reminiscent of Elvis Costello during his 70s heyday, while Into The Loving Arms Of Your Enemy may well be Harcourt's best song so far. In fact, it might be the song Ed Harcourt never gets bored of singing. Support the showGet more related content at: https://www.songsommelier.com/

It sounds like the setup to a joke: "A punk rock guitarist and a preacher's daughter walk into a theater..." But when Billy Alletzhauser and Beth Harris starting singing songs together in 2004, the result was pure magic. Their band, The Hiders, is the Kevin Bacon of music, with connections to Ass Ponys, The Afghan Whigs, Throneberry, Wussy, Heartless Bastards, Band of Horses, Plow On Boy, Comet Bluegrass All-Stars, Pearlene and more. And their sound is an amazing amalgamation of folk, country, rock, psychedelia, bluegrass, and indie rock. We talked to B & B about their start, the band's evolution, Billy's Ass Ponys tenure, Beth's harmony vocal work with Erika Wennerstrom and Heartless Bastards, the Hiders most recent album (2021's Forever at the End) and their plans for the year ahead.

Soon enough Bill Ackerman will be bringing us an official director-centric episode soon and I will be discussing another in early July. For this excursion into something besides movies, in case you didn't know, I once hosted called Voices & Visions and I would recruit friend and Austin-based journalist Dan Solomon to go back 20 years to talk about a year in music - an art form that I love every bit much as film. For this retrospective, my guests and I curate a new list of ten favorite records from a favorite year, playing snippets of certain songs and discussing our feelings about music in general. As of 2021, I decided to include my friend Jason Simpson, also a writer, to join us in this endeavor, he's back to experience the fun as well. As listeners know, I've been going back 30 years to talk about the year in film with Collin Souter and Erik Childress, so I asked Jason and Dan to do the same from now on with records. 1993 was the year I officially started my own band so it's a special discussion for me, in terms of records that had a bigger impact than most. Hearing my number one choice for favorite record of this year changed my life forever. Hopefully everyone enjoys this discussion about our favorite records from 1993, even if there are very few references to films and directors for this bonus episode. It was such a blast sharing memories with dear friends from high school as well as getting to hear a lot of incredible music from the early 90s (Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana, The Afghan Whigs, Liz Phair and so much more). If you want to hear the older episodes of the music retrospective, they are now archived below as well. Thank you so much for listening and much gratitude to Dan & Jay for their insights, opinions and a 30-year plus friendship. Vocalist, guitarist and songwriter Jame Lathren formed Candy Coffins in 2018 in Columbia, South Carolina. A cultural outcast, his resilience, sensitivity and hyperawareness of his emotional state would ultimately permeate his own music, getting right to the heart of the emotions surrounding the human condition. After disbanding his band Crown The Cake, he formed Candy Coffins with hometown guitar legend Tom Alewine (Bachelors of Art), followed by seasoned bassist Alex Mabrey, keyboardist Justin Purdy and drummer Jonathan Bradley (Iron & Wine). With dynamic and textured approach, the band's trademark lush sound bolsters Lathren's emotive songwriting and delivery. With tasteful nods to Joy Division, The Cure, The Psychedelic Furs, The Afghan Whigs and The Cult, as well as The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Spiritualized, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and Interpol, Candy Coffins' sound is dark and emotionally restless, but with elements of hope and elation. Defiantly unique, their sound is a welcome respite from musical mediocrity.

By the end of the 1990s, The Afghan Whigs were critical faves without the breakthrough single that propelled some of their contemporaries into the platinum or multi-platinum stratosphere. While 1993's Gentlemen and 1996's Black Love explored the dark, 1998's 1965 turned on the light long enough to find the party and get down to the business of feeling good, as lead singer Greg Dulli sings on the opener "Somethin' Hot." Much about the record is a change-up from previous efforts - guitars are dialed down while horns, pianos, and backing vocalists make their presence known on a record that shows off the band integrating the New Orleans vibe of their surroundings during recording. The result acts as a bridge between what the Whigs were and what Dulli and new collaborators would explore in the 2010s as The Twilight Singers.   Intro - 66 17:53 - Somethin' Hot 35:27- The Slide Song 39:29 - Omerta 45:46 - Uptown Again Outro - John The Baptist   Support the podcast, join the DMO UNION at Patreon. Despite its party vibe, “1965” was the Afghan Whigs breakup album.  The move to a new record label (Columbia), lackluster sales and a less than spectacular tour with Aerosmith that would culminate in a coma inducing 2x4 to the head in an Austin Texas bar bathroom would prove too much for the band.  Though they would emerge triumphant to reunite in in 2006, “1965” for a time was their final salvo and what a gloriously debaucherous time it was.  #solopod!        RIP Bob Nalbandian    Recommended Listening:   EP185AW:  The Afghan Whigs Black Love https://huntsmanhill.com/2022/07/31/ep185aw-the-afghan-whigs-black-love/   Live At the Howlin' Wolf https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XUFDfpVvXzU   Moon Maan  https://open.spotify.com/album/0pUyXByJ9TjelPxVD9OBy5?si=8EQr3lOhTxO6wXWXb2SwIA   huntsmanhill.com #huntsmanhill Spotify Playlist:  https://open.spotify.com/user/1298220429/playlist/4gy1wWwypkoFS2lUztvZ44?si=waSq07DBQlq3x9G1_nK0pg   Our Music manhuntsman:  https://manhuntsman.com Academy O.C:  https://academyoc.bandcamp.com/album/academy-o-c

Alternative Rock musician Rob Munk released his new "Phased Out" album via Montclair, New Jersey based Magic Door record label, a grassroots imprint founded by Guided by Voices Kevin March and producer Ray Ketcham and Renee Lab from Elk City.  "Phased Out" is a record that somehow comes out of nowhere from an artist that has been almost everywhere. This is modern rock that respects people's emotional intelligence. With elements of 1990's and 2000's indie rock and traces of 1970's AM pop, this is music that respects people's emotional intelligence. For Rob Munk, music was never the plan. An actor from the age of three, he and his brothers would commute into NYC from New Jersey for gigs to help support life with a single Mom. After several years of filming commercials, including Jello pudding with Bill Cosby to scenes with Tina Fey, Tony Hale, John Goodman and Paul Giammatti, Munk was also cast as young Woody Allen in "Stardust Memories," his brother having played the same role in the Oscar-winning "Annie Hall." Munk was also a copywriter and creative director, writing huge campaigns for ESPN, Delta Airlines and AT&T.Upon moving to Boston, Munk's new band Thudpucker became a staple on the Boston rock scene in the early 90s as many local bands were starting to explode. Between several singles, gigs and touring, they opened for Pavement, Hole, the Afghan Whigs and Juliana Hatfield.  "Phased Out" is out now. Brock Pytel, best known as the singing drummer for late 80's Montreal pop-punks The Doughboys, has just released his new solo single, Anemic Heart. The single is the follow up to his 2022 single, Hurrah Hooray. The Vancouver transplant's two latest singles were both from a session he did in 2011 at Montreal's Hotel2Tango with Howard Bilerman (Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Arcade Fire) after some Doughboys reunion tour dates with The Foo Fighters. The track features two of his former bandmates, Jonathan Cummins on the Jazzmaster, and Jon “Bond Head” Asencio on bass (both of whom are in Montreal's The Low Sixes) and was mastered by Ronan Chris Murphy (Gwar, King Crimson). The song meanders from jangly verses that seem to be pulled from The Rolling Stone's “Their Satanic Majesty's Request” into melodic choruses that call to mind 90's pop crossovers like The Fluid or Afghan Whigs. Accompanying the new single is Pytel's video for Anemic Heart, filmed and edited by prolific Vancouver artist RD Cane. The video features blurry cityscapes, fires and idyllic beach scenes that compliment Pytel's melancholic lyrics and harmonies, painting the contrast of a love gained, then lost. In the years between the sessions for the singles and their subsequent releases, the recordings fell into an extended dormancy. Pytel was buried under seemingly endless hours working in Vancouver's film industry where eventually the  stress and lack of sleep caught up with him. Reflecting on his mortality, (after serious health issues in 2020) Pytel explained, “One of the things that really hit me at that time was how little music I'd put out into the world compared to how big a part of my life making music is. I was really motivated to get things going in that regard. These digital singles are me clearing my plate, so to speak, and making room for the new. When things seem to be lagging with the SLIP~ons (waiting for mixes, etc.) it helps with the frustration of working on getting these songs out.” With renewed vigor and determination, Pytel plans to complete more solo singles from the H2T sessions in the months ahead, and unleash a 5-song vinyl EP of his power pop band SLIP~ons in Summer 2023.  D I S C O V E R Bandcamp: http://brockpytel.bandcamp.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/brockpytelFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/brock.pytelSpotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/1NQdziyMx6vWJyVlUv27a0?si=obKMIc9cR5e-SsftdX7RJA Brought to you by AIXdspShop now and get up to 50% off on all plugins.Website: HEREPledge monthly with Patreon https://www.patreon.com/apologueShop Apologue products at http://apologue.ca/shop

There's something poetic about the fact Built To Spill and The Afghan Whigs dropped an album on the same day. The bands may have been diametrically opposed in the '90s, but because they peaked around the same time and have now become a staple for Gen X indie heads, the two groups oftentimes get put in the same category. On this week's Indiecast episode, hosts Steven Hyden and Ian Cohen put both bands' legacy into perspective while discussing Built To Spill's When The Wind Forgets Your Name (18:39) and The Afghan Whigs' How Do You Burn? (36:57)The biggest music news of this week came from Harry Styles and the absolute chaos that is his new film, Don't Worry Darling (:55). The film's premiere saw cringey interview quotes, Florence Pugh being a wild card, and a (debunked) rumor that Styles spit on his co-star Chris Pine. Plus, a fan mailbag question had Steven and Ian finally addressing which one of them is guilty of having a squeaky chair (7:26).In this week's Recommendation Corner (52:39), Ian endorsed Phoenix band Holy Fawn, whose new album Dimensional Bleed is out today. Meanwhile, Steven shouted out Bitchin Bajas' new album Bajascillators, which sounds like Philip Glass meets the Grateful Dead. New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday. Today my friend Greg Dulli of The Afghan Whigs returns to the show to talk all about their new masterpiece record "How Do You Burn" which comes out this Friday. This record is absolutely next level and I have not stopped spinning it all week. It was so good to catch up with Greg on all things Whigs. We dive into all kinds of topics including his early days in LA working at Tower Records, Peter Falk aka Columbo teaching him about Jazz, recording in the desert and Touring in Europe during a heat wave. I love this episode. Have a great week and looking forward to seeing you guys out on the road. DDR

Black Love is the Whigs second masterpiece in a row and they would never be as dark or foreboding again.  Where Gentlemen was intimate and desperate, Black Love is grand and demanding.  It's the soundtrack to a Film Noir / Blaxploitation mashup, a world where secrets and betrayal are set to a Wah Wah pedal and there's no discerning anger, desperation or triumph. It's terrifying and I never want to leave.  Here's hoping Greg gives us the second part of that crime scene at some point.    Recommended Listening: Beautiful Girls Soundtrack  https://www.amazon.com/Beautiful-Original-Motion-Picture-Soundtrack/dp/B002GKMKUA   Greg Dulli “Live At the Triple Door” https://open.spotify.com/album/18qbIFeS9zZck6MjFaEmQY?si=lbroHcetQFueylX49h6-bg   huntsmanhill.com #huntsmanhill Spotify Playlist:  https://open.spotify.com/user/1298220429/playlist/4gy1wWwypkoFS2lUztvZ44?si=waSq07DBQlq3x9G1_nK0pg   Our Music manhuntsman:  https://manhuntsman.com Academy O.C:  https://academyoc.bandcamp.com/album/academy-o-c
