This week, we jump back a bit to a movie we skipped initially to make sure it was discussed at an appropriate time of year. And since its 2025 (happy new year!), lets kick it off by watching Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed fall in love in Bedford Falls. It's a Wonderful Life (1946), directed by Frank Capra.
Gary continues speaking with Rick Welch of The Burros of Berea podcast about Christmas movies. Gary gives a lot of background information about several more films, including Die Hard, Home Alone, and The Three Godfathers. These older films are often dismissed as being "out of touch," but Gary shows that this is far from the truth. They are great lessons about both life and history (among other topics). Christi Dodge and Mike Dodge discuss the 1985 film "A Chorus Line," directed by Richard Attenborough and starring Michael Douglas, Terence Mann, and Audrey Landers. They analyze the film's cinematography, character development, and the use of a silhouetted director to create a mysterious figure. They note the film's realistic style, the use of full-length mirrors on stage, and the challenges of highlighting dancers in a crowded scene. They also discuss the film's financial performance, which was lackluster despite a $25 million budget, and its mixed critical reception. The hosts reflect on the film's impact and its place in the history of movie musicals. Continuing December's Holiday theme, this week we've got one of the all-time classics - Frank Capra's 'It's a Wonderful Life'! Ben, Greg, Lindsey, and Ray discuss the 1946 film. Directed by Frank Capra, starring James Stewart, Donna Reed, Lionel Barrymore, and Henry Travers.
Hollywood was crippled by strikes earlier this year. This led to a number of delays and changes including Dune: Part II. Thankfully, some great character posters were released. We also talk about one of the least talked about movies from one of our favorite actors. Plus, a look at the potentially great genre offerings coming at the end of the first week of December.A Creature Was Stirring sounds like it is going to be a goofy holiday horror movie. A mother carefully takes care of her daughter who is suffering from a mysterious sickness. When two burglars great into her home, she is forced to confront her checkered past. Along the way, there is a unique creature, some well done Christmas vibes, and a pretty creepy story. It's ending completely through us for a loop. It all but ruins every bit of goodwill that has been built by introducing a plot twist that makes little sense in the context of the story. We try to make sense of it and disagree over what it means for the movie as a whole. It also leads to the requisite conversation about whether Die Hard is a Christmas movie. (Spoiler alert: it isn't.)It's a Wonderful Knife is a title that seems to trap a movie into being little more than a spoof. While there are some allusions to the Frank Capra classic, the 2023 film brings some fun new elements. There are great characters, a fantastic villain, and well paced story that does not waste any time. It is an overall great addition to anyone's holiday horror catalog. In the 1947 classic Christmas film It's a Wonderful Life!, George Bailey, played by Jimmy Stewart, goes through a tough time during Christmas in dealing with two serious financial problems caused by someone else. This most beloved and joyful man in all of Bedford Falls is overcome with depression, anger, hopelessness, and despair. In the midst of all this, George's wife, Mary, steps in and shows us how to help the people we love when they are in a dark place, especially at Christmas It's what today's episode is all about. But before we get into today's episode, here's what this podcast is all about. Welcome to You Were Made for This If you find yourself wanting more from your relationships, you've come to the right place. Here you'll discover practical principles you can use to experience the life-giving relationships you were made for. I'm your host, John Certalic, award-winning author and relationship coach, here to help you find more joy in the relationships God designed for you. To access all past and future episodes, go to the bottom of this page to the yellow "Subscribe" button, then enter your name and email address in the fields above it. The episodes are organized chronologically and are also searchable by topics, categories, and keywords. Christmas is all about relationships Of all the times of the year to find joy in our relationships, can there be a better time than Christmas? Christmas only exists because Jesus wants a relationship with us, and he came to earth to make that really clear to us. There's certainly joy in this relationship, and also in our relationships with friends and family. But sometimes things get in the way of experiencing the kind of relationship God designed for us with the people we love. We see this so vividly in what I think is the greatest Christmas movie ever made, It's a Wonderful Life! The film is overflowing with many different kinds of relationship struggles. But in the end, it leaves you feeling good about being alive in community with other people. I like this movie so much that I did an entire podcast on seven relationship lessons we learn from It's a Wonderful Life! It's episode 045 and I'll have a link to it at the bottom of today's show notes. It's a Wonderful Life! in a nutshell If it's been a while since you saw the film, or if you've never seen It's a Wonderful Life!, here's a brief summary of the plot: The main character, George Bailey, played by Jimmy Stewart, grew up in a small town by the name of Bedford Falls prior to WWII. From the time he was young, George was a very popular, engaging person, well-liked by everyone. Small-town life was not for him, however. He talked often about his dream of traveling to far-away places where he would work as an engineer to build big things, like skyscrapers and bridges. George grew up in a loving family where his father and uncle ran the Bailey Brothers Building & Loan, a business in competition with the bank in town owned by the antagonist in the movie, Henry Potter. “Old man Potter” as he was called. At one point George's father, Peter Bailey, died suddenly and George took over the Building & Loan. The plan was that once George's brother Harry graduated from college, he would take over the Building & Loan, so George could leave Bedford Falls to pursue an education and his dreams. But things didn't turn out as planned. Harry returns from college, not just with a diploma, but also with a wife and a job out of town with his father-in-law. All this leaves George with the responsibility of running the Building & Loan, causing him to feel all the more trapped, which is a major theme of the movie. Money set aside for a honeymoon George ends up getting married to a woman named Mary. On their wedding day and on their way out of town for their honeymoon, there's a run on the bank. This was not unusual during the Depression of the 1930s, which is when the movie takes place. Everyone wanted to withdraw their savings in cash, but there's not enough money to pay out the withdrawals. Mary sees what's going on and turns over to George all the wedding money and savings she and George have saved for their honeymoon. George then uses it to pay out the cash withdrawals. This is the first example we see from Mary of how to help the people we love when they are going through a rough time. How many women do you know would sacrifice their once-in-a-lifetime romantic vacation to help her husband solve a problem at work? Not many. Most women would say something along the lines of, “This is our wedding day and we're leaving for our honeymoon. Let your co-workers deal with the problem. They'll understand. Aren't I more important than your job, your business? But that's not Mary. She sacrifices her desires and her resources to help the person she loves. Sometimes to help the people we love we have to set aside our dreams. And sometimes to help the people we love will cost us financially. Investing in relationships This run on the bank that George and Mary are dealing with is an interesting metaphor for relationships. Just as deposits we make with our money into financial institutions, we also make “deposits” in our relationships. George Bailey had certainly done that with the relationships he developed and fostered in Bedford Falls. The movie shows how he invested in people, and the things he did to help people who needed help. Watch for it the next time you see the movie. I'll comment more on this in a few minutes. But I wonder about you and me. To what extent are we investing in relationships, where we pour ourselves into being there for other people? Will we have enough in our relationship account that there will be something to withdraw when we need help? Another problem at work After the problem with the run on the bank is solved. Another work-related problem arises like the whack-a-mole game you play at the fair. On Christmas Eve Uncle Billy misplaces $8,000 worth of deposits right as a bank examiner shows up for an audit. In today's dollars adjusted for inflation, this would amount to about $110,000. If the money isn't found, it will mean bankruptcy, scandal, and jail time for George. He's beside himself with fear, and it brings out the worst in him. The rest of the film shows how George goes about dealing with this problem, and how others deal with George. If ever there was a movie about relationships, this would be it. For example, at one point in the film George tries to help Uncle Billy remember where he left the money. But he gets impatient, roughs up Uncle Billy, and calls him “a silly old fool.” George then comes home in his irritated, fearful state and yells at his kids. He makes one of them cry, in fact. At which point Mary steps in to protect her children. She positions herself in front of the kids and confronts George very sternly with “George, why must you torture the children? Why don't you…” A change in behavior Before this scene, Mary observed this marked change in behavior in her husband and asked him “What's wrong?” George doesn't answer, in part because I think he's trying to protect his wife from work problems, and in part because he's confused by his own anger and rage. Mary is puzzled by George because it's not like him to be so angry. But she doesn't give up on George when he doesn't answer her “what's wrong?” question. She reflects in her mind what might be the problem. George didn't go to work that morning angry at the world, so it's logical to consider that maybe something happened at work to set him off. George isn't any help in figuring out the problem, so Mary logically and wisely calls someone who works with George to see if he might know. It's one thing you can do to help someone you love. She picks up the phone and asks the operator to call Bedford 247. And guess who answers? Uncle Billy. Now we don't hear what Mary says to Uncle Billy. But by the end of the movie we find out. George gets help for dealing with his problem After George walks out the door after yelling at his kids we see him encounter Clarence Oddbody AS2 (Angel 2nd class). He's sent by God to help George put his problem in perspective and to realize the impact he's had on people. It's interesting that God doesn't send Clarence the angel to solve George's problem, but rather that despite his problems it truly is a wonderful life that George has been living. God still works like that today. Often not solving our problems, but always putting them in perspective in light of eternity and God's purposes for our life. Bold action to help the people we love Getting back to Mary and her phone call to Uncle Billy. After George's encounter with Clarence Oddbody, Angel second class, he returns home a new man. Oh so grateful to be alive and even at peace with the potential consequences of the misplaced $8,000 of deposits. It's here we see what Mary and Uncle Billy talked about in their phone call. She now tells George, “It's a miracle, George! It's a miracle!” Then Uncle Billy walks through their front door with a large wicker laundry basket, sets it on a folding table, and tells George one of the key lines in the movie in an excited tone. “Mary did it, George! Mary did it! She scoured all over town telling people you were in trouble…” With that, crowds of people come pouring through the front door with cash to put in the basket. What a bold action on Mary's part. Sometimes to help the people we love we have to step out of our comfort zone and ask other people to help us care for the one we love. Sometimes we have to make withdrawals from our relational bank account. It's just how it works. What we've learned from Mary in It's a Wonderful Life! Mary shows us that we can help the people we love who are going through difficult times by first observing any change in behavior. What's different about them now, and when did the change happen? Often knowing when will give us further clues to help those we love. We also learn from Mary how it's important to reflect upon what might be causing the distress in the people we love. Be direct and ask them. They may not know themselves, but don't give up. Probe further. Take action as Mary did. Ask other people who may be in a position to know what the root of the problem is in the angst our loved one is experiencing. Call someone. Don't text. And then when you finally understand the heart of the problem. Take more action. Evaluate what you can do to help, and what you need from other people. Finally, we learn from Mary that helping the people we love going through a really bad season is done behind the scenes. I love behind-the-scenes-people. They have no hidden agenda and they want to bring out the best in people. It's never about them So what does all this mean for YOU? How can you use what you've heard today to help you find more joy in the relationships in your life? Make it a goal to be a better observer of the important people in your life. Notice any changes in behavior. Then reflect upon what might possibly be causing those changes. Finally, take action. Do something that tries to help. And like Mary in the movie, do all this behind the scenes. Be a behind-the-scenes person. It's pretty fulfilling helping the people we love this way. Closing In closing, I'd love to hear any thoughts you have about today's episode. I hope your thinking was stimulated by today's show, to consider how you can help the people you love this Christmas - behind the scenes. For when you do, it will help you experience the joy of relationships God desires for you. Because after all, You Were Made for This. Well, that's it for today. As we close up shop, please don't forget to spread a little relational sunshine around the people you meet this week. Spark some joy for them, kind of like Mary did and all the people of Bedford Falls. And I'll see you again next time. Goodbye for now. A special episode of Films that I Own That I Haven't Watched Yet, recorded shortly after Christmas last year (so only took me the best part of a year to edit and upload!) Four films, all linking from one to the next - so not chosen at random. The first Mr Smith Goes To Washington (1939) - from director Frank Capra and starring James Stewart (who would later work together on Its A Wonderful Life), Jean Arthur and Claude Rains - a political comedy drama in which Stewart plays a newly appointed Senator who is battling a corrupt political system. Then, I watch and review the festive romantic comedy The Shop Around The Corner (1940) - another James Stewart movie, a romantic comedy directed by Ernst Lubitsch in which Stewart plays alongside Margaret Sullivan as two employees working in a leathergoods shop, who dispite loathing each otrher in person are actually falling in love via anonymous letters.Film 3 is You've Got Mail. (1998) which sees Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks star in a Nora Ephron retelling of the Shop Around the Corner, for the digital age, as Meg Ryan plays a small book shop owner who is put out of business by the book store chain owner, Hanks, but again, via anonymous emails they strike up a loving relationshipFinally, film 4 is Nora Ephron's whimsical remake of the classic TV Series Bewtitched, in which Will Farrell plays a fading TV star trying to boost his career by relaunching a classic TV show (Bewtitched) by casting unknown actress (and actual witch) played by Nicole Kidman. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Every time someone downloads this episode, an angel gets its wings. For the Christmas holiday we have a special bonus for listeners. Mike and Brian break down one of their favorite holiday films, Frank Capra's Its A Wonderful Life. From its humble beginnings as a Christmas card, to it flopping so hard it shuttered the production company and ended Capra's career as a commercial filmmaker, this had a long and winding road to enjoying its beloved status. We talk about why its message about community building and treating others with dignity still resonates today. We break down the many moments that make us laugh, move us to tears or hit a bit harder as we get older ourselves. Book Vs. Movie“It's a Wonderful Life”(2018 replay ep) The Margos get out their hankies and talk about another holiday classic“No man is a failure who has friends.” The Margos wanted to fit in one more holiday movie this year, and what better way to celebrate than with the number one weepie of all time--It's a Wonderful Life? (Yes, it was based on a short story The Greatest Gift by Philip Van Doren Stern and you can read it for yourself in under 15 minutes.)The Greatest Gift is the story of a man named George Bailey who wants to commit suicide. An unnamed stranger gives George his wish to see what life would be like if he had never been born. In the end, he chooses life. Van Doren Stern wrote this short story (which took him several years to finish) in 1944; at first, he could not find anyone willing to publish it. Eventually, he self-published 200 pamphlets and sent them as Christmas cards to family and friends.Director Frank Capra eventually landed the property and decided to completely revamp the story to include George's childhood and more. It is now considered a classic film, but at the time, it was a bit of a box office failure, and Capra never really had the opportunity to see how his work influenced generations of storytellers for decades now.In this show, we discuss the differences between the short story and the film. In this episode my guest is Karolyn Grimes, many of you know her as Zuzu from It's A Wonderful Life. She was also in another "Christmas Movie" The Bishop's Wife as well as many other films. Karolyn worked with Jimmy Stewart, Carey Grant, David Niven, John Wayne, and Lewtta Young to name just a few of the stars she was in films with.
It all started around the Thanksgiving table at my parent's house in 2021. The big plan was to propose to Sally when it was my turn to tell everyone why I was thankful. It marked our fourth year together during the Holidays listening to Uncle Joe tell everyone he was saved from a horrible end when Aunt June left him for the Quickie-Mart attendant. And Mom shared how blessed she was to be around for another season after having that hairy mole removed, even though she's in perfect health. It was tradition to let all the ladies go first, and my brother would make the same lame joke each year directed at me, "Ladies first, looks like you're up, Walter." He'd then awkwardly cackle alone for ten whole seconds before we took turns around the table. My older sister Kathleen kicked things off by talking about her newest addition to the family. It's not what you think; she's obsessed with cats even though her husband Phil is allergic. The poor guy sits around all day sneezing and rubbing his eyes, and Kathleen keeps bringing home more kittens. I stopped going to her house because you can imagine the chaos and mix of odors floating around. The place always smelled like gingerbread and urine every November and December. Each year she insists on dressing the felines up on special days. They all had tiny skeleton shirts for Halloween, and for Christmas, they'll be sporting ugly sweaters that Kathleen happened to bring on Thanksgiving to pass around for everyone to examine. Dad finally cut off my sister about ten minutes into the fashion show to ask Sally to speak. My girlfriend stood up to address the audience as I fiddled with the engagement ring inside my pocket. Sally took a deep breath and said, "I've grown to adore all of you except Walter." The crowd laughed, and she continued, "Yeah, right, a joke. Except I'm not joking. I mean, it would be great if I was, I wish I were kidding around, but I'm not. You see, I was most in love with Walt the first month we were together. It's been downhill ever since. I've tried to work up enough courage to leave him the last two years because I convinced myself things would get better the first two years we were together. After drinking too much spiked eggnog this evening, the courage finally surfaced. Now is as good a time as any to break the news. Trying my best to convince Sally that it was not the best time or place for this discussion was hopeless. She had something to say, and it all had to come out, so she went on, "You, Walter are a terrible person. It didn't take long to figure out you only care about yourself." Sally slammed her drink and had more to say, "I can't even count the number of times you stood me up so you could do your silly online gaming stuff with your buddies you've never even met. You embarrass me when we eat out because you upset the server on purpose every time so that you can justify not tipping. Your sister's house smells like a dead animal, but she is still your sister. It wouldn't kill you to visit her once a year. And your brother, well, I can't blame you for not going to see him; he's also a jerk. Remember the Black Friday sale two years ago, Walter? I do; I'll never forget it. You ended up in a fistfight with that poor old woman over a Nintendo she wanted for her grandson."I spoke up and said, "Alright, let me stop you there. It was a Playstation, and..." Sally cut me off and continued to throw verbal punches, "I don't care what it was! By the way, that old woman would have kicked you around real good if she hadn't tripped over the random car seat on the floor. She had you up until she fell. Having to work with you every day right next to your cubicle is excruciating. You never bring the donuts when it's your turn, and you are always so mean to Stuart around the corner. Is it because he has thick glasses? Are you still in the sixth grade? I'm simply amazed at how much of my life I have wasted on you—shame on me."Sally's phone beeped; she looked at it and touched the screen as she struggled to push her chair under the table. "My Uber is here. Look, I guess I'm thankful it's over now, Walt." On her way out, she says, "You aren't very good-looking, you know. You think you are, but you're a little chunky." Sally paused to throw up on the potted Fiddle Leaf Fig Tree and yelled, "See you at work on Monday." Immediately Uncle Joe asked Kathleen to pass the sweet potatoes as Dad said, "She's right, you know. You aren't very nice, Walt." I found myself alone on the deck after dinner in the cold. Phil joined me after a few minutes. It was a surprise because we'd never exchanged more than a couple of words once a year at Thanksgiving. "You are an asshole, Walt.""Thanks, Phil. I appreciate the positive reinforcement." "I didn't step outside to sugarcoat things. I'm here to give you a little honesty.""Right, Phil, because there is absolutely a shortage of honesty this evening," I said sarcastically. "I know you make fun of me, Walter. I've overheard your remarks about your sister and her cat obsession. You think I'm crazy for putting up with her. The truth is, I deal with it because I love her. The idea is to give more in a relationship than we take. I'm always my happiest whenever Kathleen is happy. She can bring ten more cats home as long as it fills her with joy. I didn't always think that way, but once I figured it out, my whole life fell into place. It's like the central theme in all of those corny Holiday movies. 'Keep Christmas in your heart all year long,' or something like that. If you apply that principle to your life, you may discover happiness. You may or may not win the girl back, but you'll be a better person." I listened to Phil talk on and on about being kind and embracing the joy of giving. He sounded more and more like a Hallmark movie with each sentence. Then it dawned on me. He was explaining what I had to do to win over Sally. I looked at Phil and said, "You are a genius. I'll start doing nice things at work in front of Sally. Once she realizes I've changed, she'll be back in my arms in no time." "No, Walter, that's not what I'm saying. But if your plan makes you pleasant at work, at least that's a start. It's not always easy to do the right thing. Sometimes at home, I'll take a bottle of rum into the bathroom and take a few shots to clear my head.""Why do you go to the bathroom?" I asked."The bathroom downstairs is the only room in the house the cats aren't allowed. I can knock back a few without sneezing liquor out of my nose." We both laughed. It was the first time I'd connected with anyone in years. After taking everything, Phil said to heart; I decided to put my plan into motion at work first thing. On the way in, I stopped for donuts. I ordered two dozen daily ahead of time to make up for all the days I missed. Everyone was a little shocked at first, but soon I got high fives from my coworkers when I walked in the door. Stuart became my regular lunch date. He was hesitant at first because he figured I would ambush him over tacos with some joke about how he looked like Scrat from Ice Age. It turns out Stuart had some mad skills in Call Of Duty, so Wednesday night became our game night. He stood up for me when I volunteered to play Santa at the office party, and no one else wanted me to do it. I even convinced everyone to chip in and donate to the local soup kitchen instead of exchanging gifts. I was winning everyone over at work except for Sally. She barely looked at me. My portrayal of the jolly fat man was on point. I have to say; I was feeling pretty good about everything for once. The party was going great until Sally showed up with her date. It was some guy she met in the elevator who worked two floors above us. They were holding hands and being overly flirtatious the entire time. It drove me nuts. As soon as Mr. Marvelous took a potty break, I confronted Sally. "It didn't take you very long, did it?""Walter, I'm happy. I've been meaning to speak with you.""You have more to say? I think you said enough over Thanksgiving.""No, Walter, you need to stop." "Stop what?" I asked."Stop trying to impress or win me back or whatever it is you are trying to do. I've moved on, and the best thing you can do is let me go." Sally walked away, and I felt emptier than ever. A few days later, I found myself at Kathleen's house. After visiting with my sister, I decided to sneak off with Phil to his favorite spot, the downstairs bathroom. Once I grabbed the bottle of rum from the kitchen, I asked Phil to follow me. We were a little cramped. I sat on the sink, and Phil took a seat on the toilet. I shook my head and explained to Phil that his plan didn't work. He reminded me that he only planted a seed of direction and never told me to go after Sally. "Walter, let me ask you a question.""I'm all ears, Phil.""Why did you come to our home today?" "I missed my sister. I was a little depressed and wanted to be around family.""That sounds nothing like the Walt, I know. Walter, how did it make you feel doing all those nice things at work?""Better than I've felt ever, I guess.""Then stop pretending to be the good guy at work to impress Sally. Be that man everywhere." We took a drink...*Read the rest at SomeOfItsTrue.net
Gary discusses a newspaper article about old movies sent in from a listener. Gary's interest in movies from the Golden Age of Hollywood goes deep and this article rekindled his passion and sparked this episode. The classic films are not only fun (and usually clean) entertainment, they can (and should) be used to teach the Christian worldview. Get Gary's talk and outline about classic movies here.
Truly Inconsequential – Not all characters are created equal. Mr. Greer and Brimstone of The Grindhouse Radio debate this week's zeroes in front of a live audience. It'll be determined in real time who will remain inconsequential, and who may be liberated back into the hero's category. This week, they get into the Christmas spirit (Not like Scrooge got into the Ghost of Christmas Past) by arguing which classic film is more consequential to Christmas as a whole. The combatants are It's A Wonderful Life; as well A Christmas Carol – Both seen billions of times throughout the years, which is just a little bit more important than the other. Question is, who will remain truly inconsequential.

It's A Wonderful Life is a crummy movie, but a great I.P., so we've re-booted it! This is a 2021 re-make that will definitely hit a billion! We re-cast, up the B.H.I. (body heat index) and add a TON of branding beats. It's a Wonderful Life is our last Fix of the year before we take a holiday break and maybe see if Hollywood is willing to open their doors to us again. Billion dollar mindset teaches that if you've been permanently banished from an industry, wait a year then try again. No matter what happens in Hollywood, we'll be back to regular posts in 2022! Hope you're celebrating what this season is really about: Spending $$$MONEY$$$!!!!!
