Max Burkholder stars as the lead of Seth MacFarlane's critically acclaimed series TED, a prequel to the hit film franchise. He plays the leading role of “John Bennet” (the younger version of Mark Wahlberg's character from the films), a good-hearted teenager who is still in his awkward teenage phase. With Ted's help, John hilariously navigates adolescence, dealing with everything from first dates to high school bullies. Premiering on January 11, 2024, Ted launched as Peacock's most-watched original title ever through its first three days on the platform. Burkholder is perhaps best known for his portrayal of “Max Braverman” in NBC's long running award-winning series PARENTHOOD, from producers Jason Katims, Ron Howard and Brian Grazer. Here Max raised awareness while portraying a young boy with Asperger's syndrome. After the second episode aired, Asperger's was one of the most frequently searched terms on Google. He also played the lead role in Paramount TV's WHEN THE STREET LIGHTS GO ON for DGA, Oscar, IDA, and Emmy-nominated director Brett Morgen. His notable recurring roles include HBO's IN TREATMENT and BROTHERS AND SISTERS. In film, Burkholder starred in Debra Eisenstadt's hit Sundance comedy BLUSH opposite Wendy McLendon-Covey; and in the title role of BENJAMIN, alongside comedy veterans Rob Corddry, Kevin Pollak and Dave Foley. Burkholder began his career at a very young age in films including DADDY DAY CARE directed by Steve Carr, FRIENDS WITH MONEY directed by Nicole Holofcener, and a starring role in the Michael Bay-produced hit feature THE PURGE opposite Ethan Hawke and Lena Headey. In the world of voiceover, Burkholder has voiced characters on a number of hit series including Amazon Prime's INVINCIBLE, FAMILY GUY, THE CLEVELAND SHOW, AMERICAN DAD and THE LAND BEFORE TIME. Tune in as Seth Vargas (Movie Friends) teams up with Arthur to break down As We See It, the 2022 Prime Video series that revolves around a trio of autistic mid-20s roommates who are trying to figure out their lives and gain independence. Talking points that the hosts bring up on this episode include the series being cringey in a good way, the uneven arc of Aaron Eckhart's career, and doing away with unnecessary social customs like the one where people say “can I ask you a question?” before asking the question itself. Created by Jason Katims, As We See It stars Rick Glassman, Albert Rutecki, Sue Ann Pien, Sosie Bacon, Chris Pang, Joe Mantegna, Délé Ogundiran, Vella Lovell, Tal Anderson, Alyssa Jirrels, Adan James Carrillo, Casey Mills, David Futernick, and Andrew Duff. What is love? (Brian don't hurt me.) It's a Brian Krakow takeover and Nate Runkel is here to work out some of his own stuff. Tipper Newton doesn't remember much but maybe that's just the brain protecting itself. Questionable music choices, terrible ADR and more Brian Krakow than anyone ever wanted in their lives. It's My So-Called Life Of Brian!

As we see it lo stava facendo in maniera non edulcorata, come è giusto, evitando pietismi e ipocrisie. In the Apple TV+ series Dear Edward, a plane crashes, and there is only one survivor – a 12-year-old boy named Edward, who loses his whole family. He goes to live with relatives, and the web of people grieving loved ones who died in the crash grows and connects. The show was created by Jason Katims, who has a long history making high-octane emotional ensemble shows including Friday Night Lights and Parenthood.
Eva Ariel Binder is among the youngest cast members to join AppleTV+'s new show, Dear Edward. Binder plays Shay, who becomes friends with Edward after he is the sole survivor of a plane crash. Leave it to Jason Katims to bring together a mix between humanity, love, and tragedy. The show is exceptionally moving and follows the family members of those left behind, along with the survivor's guilt that Edward carries. Binder shows her acting ability as the standoff-ish neighbor to eventually his friend. Binder talks about what it was like getting the part, who she thinks Shay is, and why she needs to be in Edwards's life. Mark Ivanir wanted to be an actor since he was five-years-old, but he made several pitstops along the way. First, he served as an Israeli spy who went undercover on a secret mission to rescue Jews out of Ethiopia. Then he took some time off and joined a circus – juggling and performing pantomime on the streets of Paris. Eventually, he returned to his first love and his start in Hollywood couldn't have gone better: One of his first roles was in Steven Spielberg's "Schindler's List." Since then, he has worked non-stop, appearing in more than 50 movies and television shows – and has starred alongside Angelina Jolie, Matt Damon and Robert De Niro. His latest role pairs him with yet another A-list star: two-time Academy Award winner Hilary Swank. They make up two of the five astronauts on the first human mission to Mars in a compelling new Netflix series called "Away." The journey is set to keep the astronauts 20 million miles away from their families for three years. Jason Katims, the show's executive producer, said that when the team first met Ivanir, he made everyone fall in love with him on the spot. “He has this humor, he has heart, and he also has this bravado," Katims explained. "It was so great because the show is dealing with big, high stakes issues. Mark has all of that, but he also brings humor to almost everything that he does and everything that he says. He has done everything from great comedic work to really wonderful dramatic work and we were just so excited to have him be part of this.” Ivanir found an unlikely muse for his role as a cocky, know-it-all astronaut with a sense of humor. “Someone I took inspiration from was my contractor,” Ivanir said, laughing. “He has nothing to do with space, but he cracks jokes all the time. That's his default. That's where he goes. He is emotionally armored. The character was written like that from the beginning and then I realized that that's the guy. It's funny, but it's true. No pilots or astronauts, just my contractor.” His previous career as a spy also helped, since he was able to completely embody a new character. And his time doing summersaults in Paris aided his work in the scenes where he's floating in zero-gravity. “We had to try to figure out how to move in space in terms of the speed and your ability to go forty-five degrees or to do a full circle on the wire. Luckily, I have a background as a circus performer so by the second day I was doing all kinds of backflips!” "Away" is a workplace drama set in outer space, but it's also a poignant tale for the historic moment in which we find ourselves. It's a story of flight, of possibility and of hope. The first season of the show debuts on Netflix on September 4th. In this new episode of our podcast, we caught up with Ivanir to talk about the new Netflix series, as well as his previous career as both a circus performer and an Israeli spy. Of all three of those careers, he told us he enjoys acting the most. "In many ways, it gives you an opportunity to do all of these things in a somewhat safe capacity. So, you can be a spy, and then the director says 'Cut!,' and you go and have a snack. It gives you the opportunity to get into so many characters and then leave them and be yourself. It's lovely."
In the 2nd episode of the unplanned, unintended "Representation" series, we talk about Autistic representation in media. In this episode, we mention Steve Silberman, author of Neurotribes, Rain Man, Parenthood and Max Braverman, Jason Katims, Atypical, The A Word, The Big Bang Theory, Everything's Gonna Be Okay, Julia from Sesame Street, The Golden Girls, The Good Doctor, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, You Can't Ask That, Fresh Off The Boat, The Family Law, and Entrapta from She-Ra and The Princesses of Power. We discuss whether a label is harmful or helpful and how common beliefs about gifted children likely has origins in ASD. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Few TV heavyweights have done as much to tell thoughtful, moving stories about teenagers as Jason Katims. While he was a young playwright, Katims broke into the television industry as a staff writer for My So-Called Life — ground zero for realistic depictions of adolescence on TV — then quickly went on to work on any number of iconic teen shows, culminating in his five-season stint as the showrunner of the gorgeous small-town drama Friday Night Lights, following football players in a Texas town. Katims has, of course, written about non-teenagers too. For six seasons, his Parenthood told thoughtful stories about people struggling with very mundane, very real problems. (It was great.) But he’s gone back to high school with his latest series, Rise. The NBC drama follows teenagers involved with a drama program in a dying Pennsylvania steel town. Todd has been hoping to talk to Katims for years now, which made this discussion all the better. Katims touches on the differences between high school football coaches and high school drama directors, the lessons he learned from the legendary creator and producers of My So-Called Life, and how he learned to be judicious in using Friday Night Lights’ most famous catchphrase. The 90s TV drama 'My So-Called Life' had a profound impact on Nerdette host Greta Johnsen. (“Jordan Catalano still holds a special place in my heart,” she said of the fictional Liberty High School heartthrob played by Jared Leto.)Jason Katims helped create that TV show, along with other heart-wrenching dramas like 'Parenthood' and 'Friday Night Lights.' Now Katims is the writer and executive producer of another dramatic network TV show set in high school: 'Rise,' which combines football, musical theater, and plenty of high school teen angst. “I mean, I’m clearly stuck in my own progression in life,” Katims tells Nerdette. “I got stuck at 17 and never moved on.” Katims talked with us about 'Rise,' why so much of his writing examines adolescence, and what a busy Hollywood showrunner does to recharge. (Plus, get hyped for plenty of TV clips featuring PEAK teen angst.)

Perez and Katims stopped by IndieWire to discuss their inspirations for RISE, including what convinced Katims to return to high school — and why Perez finally started doing TV after years of avoiding the small screen.

Abrams II, Part 1: The Pallbearer. Running Time: 48 minutes 14 seconds As the trailer proudly states, Star Trek Beyond is produced by J.J. Abrams. We all know that Abrams directed the last two Star Trek films, and we all know that he is not directing this one. So what does it mean when we see that Abrams is producing the new movie? We try to answer that question in this new series on Commentary: Trek Stars, where we will be looking at each of the films which Abrams produced for other filmmakers. In Part 1 of this series, John and Mike cover The Pallbearer, a film starring David Schwimmer and Gwyneth Paltrow which was directed by Cloverfield director Matt Reeves, and co-written by Reeves and Friday Night Lights creator Jason Katims. We discuss the heavy influence of The Graduate on this film, its place in the history of Miramax, and the contribution of cinematographer Robert Elswit. Moore, Part 2: Roswell. After leaving Voyager, Ronald D. Moore was recruited by Jason Katims to work on the second season of Roswell. The series chronicles the lives of three teenaged aliens who are secretly living in the town where their spacecraft crash landed. Under Katims’s leadership, the first season of Roswell was primarily character driven, with the science fiction elements taking a back seat. But going forward, the network wanted the series to build upon its sci-fi mythology. And so, Moore was hired as a co-showrunner for the first time in his career. This week, Max and Mike are joined by Trek.fm’s Christopher Jones to take a look at the final two seasons of Moore’s first show. We discuss whether or not Moore’s contribution improved the show, how well the show holds up over time, and the strange connection the show has to Enterprise. We also fondly recall now-defunct ’90s television networks.
