Everybody needs a Jonathan Shapiro in their life. In this special season premiere of Talk About It, Greg sits down with his closest mensch and the other half of his party of two at the deli, Jonathan Shapiro. When life gets hard, Greg turns to him for sage advice and a nice bowl of matzoh ball soup. As you'll find out in this episode, Jonathan has quite a personal history, beginning his career as a federal prosecutor and eventually becoming... you guessed it... a television show writer and showrunner. (BOSTON LEGAL, THE PRACTICE, GOLIATH, THE BLACKLIST, among many others.) Not only that, Jonathan has a deep personal connection to Greg because he is also the father of a son with epilepsy, the incredible Zeke Shapiro. The two mensches talk about Zeke's journey with his condition, and his abject bravery to perform stand up comedy and become a news anchor. They have always - and will continue to - lean on each other when times are really hard, or celebrate together when times are really great, and everything in between. All over a tuna melt on rye heels, of course. You don't want to miss this episode! The Talk About It podcast is excited to be sponsored in part by Neurelis. In this best-of episode, hosts Jodie Sweetin and Amy McCarthy tackle one of the most challenging yet essential topics for parents: having “The Talk” about drugs with kids. Joined by pediatrician Dr. Gary Kirkilas, youth drug prevention expert Ray Lozano, musician and The Voice winner Alisan Porter, and actor Greg Grunberg, the episode emphasizes the importance of ongoing, open conversations rather than a single daunting talk. The hosts and guests address real-life issues, from the impact of legalization and desensitization to youth drug use statistics. Parents are equipped with practical tips, such as using mealtime for open discussions, avoiding accusatory questions, and accessing resources like "Just Think Twice" and "Get Smart About Drugs." Key Takeaways: Start early and keep the conversation ongoing rather than relying on one “big talk.” Recognize the influence of legalization and cultural desensitization on youth perceptions. Greg returns to discuss Episodes 109-112 with Juliet. They cover many firsts for Felicity: her first Thanksgiving away from home, her first finals, her first time (almost). It's a momentous stretch for 'Felicity' and for TV as we now know it. Jennifer Garner appears as a guest star, playing Noel's girlfriend Hannah, and it's her first step into the J.J. Abrams cinematic universe. We commemorate the occasion as Garner comes on the podcast to talk about auditioning for the role of Hannah, working with J.J. on 'Alias,' and why she's seen every episode of 'Felicity' despite appearing in only a few of them. Next time: Episodes 113-115. Watch on Hulu. Hosts: Amanda Foreman, Greg Grunberg, and Juliet Litman Executive Producers: JJ Abrams and Matt Reeves For Bad Robot Audio: Executive Producer Christina Choi, Producer Shaka Tafari For The Ringer: Executive Producer Sean Fennessey, Executive Producer Juliet Litman, Senior Producer Kaya McMullen, Producer Erika Cervantes Original Music: Eric Phillips Sound Design: Kaya McMullen Mixing and Mastering: Scott Somerville Learn more about your ad choices. Content warning: Juliet, Mandy, and the guests discuss 'Felicity' Episodes 107 and 108, which depict rape. In the years since the episodes “Drawing the Line: Part 1” and "Part 2" (107 and 108) aired on the WB, they have remained the most progressive ones. Juliet enlists The Ringer's Joanna Robinson to talk about why those episodes have endured both because of and despite the difficult topic of rape. Next, Mandy joins Juliet to discuss some behind-the-scenes context, and finally, Devon Gummersall joins the show to talk about the duality of playing Pink Guy on Felicity and Brian Krakow on 'My So-Called Life.' Gummersall reflects on how playing both guys impacted his career overall. Next time: Episodes 109-112. Watch on Hulu. Hosts: Amanda Foreman, Greg Grunberg, and Juliet Litman Executive Producers: JJ Abrams and Matt Reeves For Bad Robot Audio: Executive Producer Christina Choi, Producer Shaka Tafari For The Ringer: Executive Producer Sean Fennessey, Executive Producer Juliet Litman, Senior Producer Kaya McMullen, Producer Erika Cervantes Original Music: Eric Phillips Sound Design: Kaya McMullen Mixing and Mastering: Scott Somerville Learn more about your ad choices. Juliet and Greg cover Episodes 103-106, reliving both iconic and iconically uncomfortable moments from Felicity's first weeks at college. Those moments include the time Felicity's tape to Sally played at the dorm party (cringe), and Felicity and Noel's kiss after a particularly intense game of Boggle. Then, Juliet and Greg are joined by Scott Foley to talk about how he nearly played Ben before ultimately getting the role of Noel, working as an actor on Warner Bros. shows, and how playing Noel impacted his career. Finally, Juliet is joined by cultural critic Evan Ross Katz to contextualize Felicity among the broader WB canon, and discuss how many of these shows were ahead of their time. Next time: 107-108. Watch on Hulu. Hosts: Amanda Foreman, Greg Grunberg, and Juliet Litman Executive Producers: JJ Abrams and Matt Reeves For Bad Robot Audio: Executive Producer Christina Choi, Producer Shaka Tafari For The Ringer: Executive Producer Sean Fennessey, Executive Producer Juliet Litman, Senior Producer Kaya McMullen, Producer Erika Cervantes Original Music: Eric Phillips Sound Design: Kaya McMullen Mixing and Mastering: Scott Somerville Learn more about your ad choices. "Dear Sally, … Three years ago, I held a pint of Ben Covington's blood." That's how 'Felicity' began, but the story of the show begins long before that. Juliet, Greg, and Mandy talk about the earliest days of Season 1, the biggest moments from Episodes 101 and 102, and what makes the pilot episode so memorable. Then, Keri Russell, J.J. Abrams, Matt Reeves, and Scott Speedman join to talk about their experiences getting 'Felicity' off the ground. Next time: Episodes 103-106. Watch on Hulu. Hosts: Amanda Foreman, Greg Grunberg, and Juliet Litman Executive Producers: JJ Abrams and Matt Reeves For Bad Robot Audio: Executive Producer Christina Choi, Producer Shaka Tafari For The Ringer: Executive Producer Sean Fennessey, Executive Producer Juliet Litman, Senior Producer Kaya McMullen, Producer Erika Cervantes Original Music: Eric Phillips Sound Design: Kaya McMullen Mixing and Mastering: Scott Somerville Learn more about your ad choices. Juliet, Greg, and Mandy read some of the early reviews of Season 1 of 'Felicity.' Next, Juliet and Mandy are joined by Keri Russell to talk about how being on the show launched her career and what lessons she took away from embodying the character of Felicity. Then, we hear more from the time that Mandy, Keri, and Scott Speedman were in New York together. They talk about the friendships they built on the show and how, in many ways, their time on the show was like college. Next time: Episodes 103-106. Watch on Hulu. In one of our first recordings, Actor, writer, director, and all around mensh, Greg Grunberg helps Jay settle in on what podcasting is and how it might help get people (and especially kids) more connected in their ever increasingly isolated life. And if we can't fix that, then maybe, just maybe, we can sell them stuff.
