Welcome true believers to X-Men Horoscopes where each week our host Lodro Rinzler is in conversation with a special guest to discuss the X-Men issue that aligns with a significant month and year from their life and what that issue reveals about their future. This week we are joined by the charming and effervescent Anthony Oliveira, writer of Avengers Academy (Lodro's fav comic right now). We explore the massive question, "What does it mean to want to be good?" as we talk through everything Avengers Academy where Anthony proves that he is a wizard for making Lodro care about characters like Norman Osborn. But enough about this incredible book, let's talk X-Men. Anthony was born in the month coinciding with Uncanny X-Men 183 where Colossus breaks up with 14 year-old Kitty Pryde and boy are the X-Men pissed about it. Then Colossus spills a beer on the Juggernaut who was about to go home with Selene and now he's pissed at Colossus too. Also in this episode: Cyttorak is a drama queen Emplate is a gay S&M bondage vampire Anthony was obsessed with the X-Men villain pronounced A Poke Uh Lips Lodro thinks Angel is still dating Husk Dating Deathbird is gay Everyone's relationship is everyone's business Xavier cuts the Juggernaut out of all family photos Juggernaut knows his color blocking ...and Anthony gets his X-Men tarot reading! What does any of this mean for his future? Tune in to find out! Anthony Oliveira is a multiple National Magazine and GLAAD award-winning writer, pop culture critic, and PhD based in Toronto. A frequent contributor to Marvel Comics, he has written for Young Avengers, X-Men, and Captain Marvel, earning a 2020 GLAAD Media Award and multiple nominations. His work spans comics, prose, and journalism, often exploring queer themes. Notable titles include Wiccan & Hulkling: Last Annihilation, Lords of Empyre: Emperor Hulkling, and Young Avengers: Paradox Lost. His debut novel, Dayspring, was released in 2024 to critical acclaim. He also hosts The Devil's Party, a podcast examining Christian literature through a queer lens. You can find him on Instagram here. More of Lodro Rinzler's work can be found here and here and you can follow the podcast on Instagram at xmenpanelsdaily where we post X-Men comic panels...daily. “The Matchmaker” (October 4, 1994) Whelp, it's our 250th episode (sort of), and we're celebrating by going back and reexamining our first-ever episode and, really, the reason this podcast exists in the first place: “The Matchmaker” from Frasier's second season, which the show used to tell viewers definitively that no, despite all appearances otherwise, Frasier Crane is not gay. We're joined again by Anthony Oliveira, who also helps us recount Frasier's entire history of seeming kinda gay, from being metaphorically born from Diane Chambers all the way until the reboot. Buy Anthony's new book, Dayspring. Read the New York Times article Drew mentions, “The Boys in the Writers' Room.” Read GEE's write-up in Emmy magazine, which is basically the same thing as actually winning an Emmy.

Hello, I'm Matt Baume, and welcome to the Sewers of Paris. We're on a podcast search for entertainment that changed queer peoples' lives. This week, I'm continuing the monthlong Pride special, bringing you excerpts from some of the very best Sewers of Paris conversations I've had over the last nine years. This week, we're talking comics books. We'll start with a conversation with writer Andrew Wheeler, whose tales of adventure and intrigue stand in sharp contrast to his domestic life. Then moving on to artist DJ Kirkland, who pursued his dreams in spite of — or maybe in order to spite — a particularly mean art school teacher. Then we'll hear from artist Justin Hall, whose erotic imaginings are seemingly without limit. And finally the delightful writer Anthony Oliveira, who hosted a panel with me just last week at the Toronto Public Library. And also a quick note: if you're in Seattle, I hope you'll come see me at Elliott Bay Books this Friday, June 21st! I'll be talking about The Golden Girls, and what made those ladies such powerful queer icons — both on screen and in real life. Full details on all that at mattbaume.com/events.Full conversations with this week's guests:My 2018 conversation with Andrew WheelerMy 2016 conversation with DJ KirklandMy 2019 conversation with Justin HallMy 2017 conversation with Anthony Oliveira

My guest this week is author Rasheed Newson, a TV writer who got his start on the show Lie to Me and has gone on to write for The 100, Narcos, Bel Air, and more. Last year his debut novel, My Government Means to Kill Me, made a big splash — it's the story of a young gay black man who moves to New York during the HIV epidemic. And although Rasheed didn't experience that world first-hand, he discovered during his writing process that in a strange way, he'd been preparing himself to tell that story for years without ever realizing it.We'll have that conversation in a minute. First, a reminder if that if you like The Sewers of Paris, you'll probably also enjoy my new podcast about the 90s TV series My So-Called Life. This week's episode features the delightful Anthony Oliveira, who appeared on The Sewers of Paris just a few weeks ago. We talked all about My So-Called Life episode 3, in which we learn a lot more about the gay teen named Rickie — and we also talked about Anthony's own experience as a semi-closeted teen in Catholic school, and how his secret boyfriend wasn't quite as secret as he thought. The podcast is called Matt's So-Cast Pod, and it's available now wherever you listen to podcasts. And you may also like my YouTube videos for a queer look at movie and television history, my weekly livestreams on Twitch, my book Hi Honey, I'm Homo!, and my email newsletter. You can get all that and more at MattBaume.com.
There's a double-feature of drama on this week's episode, as rumors and innuendo swirl around two separate calamities: After a gun goes off during class, only Brian Krakow can reveal the parties involved — but he's not talking; and gossip about Angela's dalliance with Jordan reaches Patty's ears, to everyone's mortification. Plus, Rickie gains some unexpected depth! And we meet Rayanne's mom, a lady of seemingly endless thrills.I'll be chatting with the wonderful Anthony Oliveira (Dayspring, Captain America, Wiccan & Hulkling) about how this episode unlocked his long-buried memories of the 90s, Catholic school crushes, and the time he ran away from home. And then James enters the fray and we muse about Brian's strange (and fleeting) bravery, our own spotty sex-ed experiences, and the one (and maybe only) time I ever frightened someone.Check out Anthony's book Dayspring.Join me on Patreon at patreon.com/mattbaume — all paying Patrons have access to the Discord server for our weekly watch-alongs.Leave a review of Matt's So-Cast Pod on iTunes.Music by Caleb Martin - www.MartinMusicMedia.com
My guest this week is Anthony Oliveira, whose new book Dayspring comes out this Easter, April 2, 2024. That's a particularly suitable pub date, since the book is an exploration of how Christian ideas can infuse and are infused by queer love. Anthony's a returning guest to The Sewers of Paris — I last spoke to him back in 2017, when our conversation focused on monsters and villains and standing in opposition to so-called decent society. Now, nearly a decade later, Anthony's found himself engaged in a different sort of project: Building queer community through his writing, speaking, podcasting, and film series. We'll have that conversation in a minute. First, a quick reminder that if you like this podcast, you'll probably enjoy my other projects — starting with my brand new podcast that launches next week! The new show is all about the beloved TV series My So-Called Life, and why it's such a perfect encapsulation of the 90s and also the timelessness of teen angst. The podcast is called Matt's So-Cast Pod, it features a bunch of fabulous guests, and it launches March 25, 2024. You can subscribe now at socastpod.com.You may like my YouTube videos about movies and TV shows, and by the way I have a new one launching this weekend about the 1961 movie Victim. Also check out my weekly livestreams on Twitch, my book Hi Honey, I'm Homo!, my email newsletter. You can get all that and more at MattBaume.com.

Matt Baume is a writer, podcaster, and video-maker based in Seattle whose work focuses on pop culture and queer history. “Every chapter serves up a slice of queer history with a rich scoop of fascinating, juicy asides and shocking behind-the-scenes insights—like having dishy late-night cheesecake with a witty, wise friend.” —Anthony Oliveira, PhD, author, film programmer, and pop culture critic “For a medium so aligned with queer sensibilities, with its brazen artifice, showy wit, and over-the-top performances, the network sitcom was slow to embrace actual queer people. In Hi Honey, I'm Homo, Matt Baume takes us on a highly entertaining tour of queer representation in television comedy, from the be-bad-with-meta phor and you'll-miss-it winks of Bewitched to the out-and-proud-ish center stage of Will & Grace. Baume brings his trademark mix of childlike enthusiasm and intellectual rigor to a medium he clearly loves. He calls out cowardice and appeasement where he sees it, but is also careful to place each show inside its moment in queer history. This not only broadens the scope of the book, it helps us understand why sitcoms failed queer people where they did, and allows us to appreciate each step of progress on its own terms. Mainly, he never allows the many times sitcoms failed queers to diminish his appreciation for the form. I came away from Hi Honey, I'm Homo with not only a broader understanding of the medium I've spent over thirty years writing, but a big smile, too.” —Richard Day, TV writer and producer on Arrested Development, Spin City, The Drew Carey Show, Ellen, and more “What an absolute honor to read Matt Baume's Hi Honey, I'm Homo.

Hello and welcome to the Sewers of Paris Holiday Special Special! In the spirit of the season, we're diving back into the Sewers archives for my 2017 conversations with numerous past guests about their very favorite seasonal entertainment. We'll have an appreciation of Batman Returns from writer Anthony Oliveira, author of Lord of Empyre: Emperor Hulkling among many other works. There's a tribute to Snow Miser from Glen Weldon of NPR's Pop Culture Happy Hour. Performance artist Johnnie Jungleguts will explain why Eyes Wide Shut is his favorite Christmas movie. Videomaker & Dungeon Master Carlos Maza will bring us tidings of Arianna Grande and gay men's choruses. And there's lots more guests and lots more special -- we've got everything to fill your hearts with festive cheer at this, the darkest time of year.
Khelan and Adam talk to writer Anthony Oliveira and his work writing Hulking and Wiccan, Young Bobby Iceman, and his Marvel Unlimited Young Avengers run. The ultimate drag battle gets decided!
Today we're talking to pop-culture critic and writer, Anthony Oliveira (he/him), about one of his favorite Marvel super-teams; The Young Avengers! As a fan of the series who would later go on to actually WRITE FOR IT, Anthony gives us incredible insights on queer representation in the Marvel universe, dealing with heroic but problematic authority figures, and what these scrappy young heroes may look like in the MCU. Plus, we talk about the responsibility and opportunity of creating work for your younger self. Produced by Andrew Ivimey as part of The From Superheroes Network. Deep Space Nine's handling of religion is unique in Star Trek. While other Trek treats faith with skepticism and suspicion, DS9 depicts a variety of religious characters who explore faith in their own ways. Our guest: Anthony Oliveira is a National Magazine award and GLAAD award-winning author (his comics "My Drag Brunch with Loki" and “X:Men Early Thaw” are queer Marvels). His graphic novel, Apocrypha, about queer teens versus the Christian apocalypse, has been acquired by HarperTeen. His first novel, Dayspring, is forthcoming from Strange Light Press in 2023. He's online @meakoopa, where he tweets about the arts, politics, and LGBT culture, or on his podcast, The Devil's Party, as he reads through the classics of Christian literature (including Milton's poetry and the Gospels) through a queer scholarly lens. https://anthonyoliveira.com

“Out With Dad” (February 10, 2000) It's been far too long since we did a Frasier episode, and so we're returning with a good one, in which Martin (John Mahoney) plays gay and pretends that Niles (David Hyde Pierce) is his boyfriend. It's a great farce, and as special guest Anthony Oliveira points out, it's one of the best Joe Keenan-penned episodes of the show. Beyond Sunset is live! Buy issue one here! You either die a hero...or live long enough to see your adaptation hit the big screen! Rod and Raf are joined by fellow Torontonian, comic book writer (he's written for Marvel!!) cinema aficionado and overall, awesome dude, Anthony Oliveira. The three venture into a world of all things superhero; from the Marvels and DC worlds to even the Kickasses, Inspector Gadgets and Homelanders out there; there's some kind of secret to the success, right? It isn't just copy and paste, right? Maybe so, Maybe we're tired of everything. Maybe in the next 15-20 years, all the films will be a copy and paste of the Marvel formula (I hope not) Also, is Disney/Pixar's latest offering not gay enough? We sound off all that and more, tune in!
