Kieran Culkin may have just taken home Oscar gold for "A Real Pain", but before "Succession" made him a household name, he was Igby Slocumb—a rich, rebellious teen navigating trauma, privilege, and a series of bad decisions in 2002's "Igby Goes Down". This week, Mike Field and Mike Butler revisit this indie darling of the early 2000s, and... well, let's just say not everyone was charmed. From trust fund angst to aimless rebellion, the Mikes dive into why these kinds of characters don't always resonate—especially when wrapped in a blanket of affluence. Despite strong performances from Culkin, Jeff Goldblum, Susan Sarandon, and Claire Danes, Igby Goes Down might have left us a little cold. So, grab your popcorn and soda, please notice the exits to the left and right of you and settle down for Forgotten Cinema. What's your favorite film about a precocious rich kid? Let us know in the comments below!

It was very casual as, if I remember correctly, we were just eating dinner and someone between us had got up so we briefly talked and now, as I've gotten to know him a little more, I am seriously in awe of his journey and his passion for Jacksonville. He is the community leader this city needs and his dedication along with his motivated mindset is going to elevate Jacksonville to the film city it is. Every time I have the pleasure of chatting with him I feel inspired and motivated, especially since he's been a champion of this podcast which I cannot be more grateful for his support. This episode was recorded on April 24, 2025. In this episode, Adam talks about how his motivation and passion for filmmaking got him to where he is today, as a leading figure in the Jacksonville film industry. Filmmakers, specifically those in the 904 area, will especially benefit from Adam's interview and will be inspired to keep making films and spread the word about the city. Adam also explains the tax incentives for filming in Jacksonville, the current state of the arts in Jacksonville universities, and how he's spread the word about Jacksonville all around the world. Jennifer Smith was halfway through high school when she visited California with her parents and decided to stay. A decade later, she conceived and launched C Magazine, a must-read publication that highlights the people and places that make California the Golden State. Then came the 2025 wildfires, destroying her Malibu home and those of many friends in her C community. Did that dim the lights on the California Dream? Not for Smith.“After a couple of tears, I was ready to rebuild,” she tells Lyn Winter, host of Rodeo Drive The Podcast, adding, “when you wake up every morning with that ocean outside as your backyard, and you hear the waves crashing, and at night you see the glistening moon over the waves and the sea, it's just so magical that you'll just do anything to keep having it.”Now Smith celebrates 20 years of C Magazine with the publication of a book of stories drawn from past articles: California: Dream State: Stylish Living from Canyon to Coast (Rizzoli, Fall 2025).Winter spoke with Smith about the deep allure and mythology of the West Coast, the evolution of fashion, art and culture over the last two decades, and about making a successful print magazine in the digital age. For Smith, it started with landing her first cover, featuring model Carolyn Murphy, thanks to a chance meeting over at a sushi counter in Malibu.“We just started talking, and I said, ‘I'm launching a magazine about California. Would you ever consider being on the cover?' And she said, ‘of course I would.' And then we had Kirsty Hume as our second cover, because she knew Carolyn did it. And then all of a sudden, I got Cindy Crawford, and then I got Claire Danes, and then it just, from there we kept going and going.”Smith explains that the key to success in publishing today is being more than a magazine. The C-team curates events together with advertising partners, many on Rodeo Drive, like the memorable dinner for 25 at Harry Winston, at which guests on the street of dreams were each presented with a silver domed dessert, recalls Smith.“And inside the silver dome was actually a piece of jewelry for each of the guests. So everyone was just expecting to see some piece of cake, and there was some million dollar bauble, and they all got to wear it. So they were dripping in jewels and eating their dessert, and we had the best time.”As much as she loves the city, Smith feels the call to the wild. The book contains sumptuous photos of lives lived well in the canyons, the coast, mountains and desert. The only challenge was picking from more than 200 issues of the magazine. She and her team looked for timeless stories “that stood out to us and that we would want to celebrate and see again and again.”Stories that made the cut include a feature on Kelly Lynch and Mitch Glaser in their weekend home “that was just so cool with this mountain, rocky, jagged, beautiful;” and the hat maker Nick Fouquet, in his “amazing house in Topanga that is very cool and architectural.”The current issue of C Magazine, compiled just after the recent fires, was designed as a love letter to California. ”I'm forever, endlessly in love with it,” she concludes.Season 5 of Rodeo Drive – The Podcast is presented by the Rodeo Drive Committee with the support of The Hayman Family, Two Rodeo Drive, Beverly Wilshire, A Four Seasons Hotel, and the Beverly Hills Conference & Visitors Bureau.Season 5 Credits:Executive Producer and Host: Lyn WinterOn behalf of the Rodeo Drive Committee: Kay Monica RoseScriptwriter and Editorial Advisor: Frances AndertonEditor and Videographer: Hans FjellestadTheme music by Brian BanksProduction Assistant: Isabelle Alfonso@rodeodrive Hosted on Acast. All of the nearly three hundred episodes we've done so far have been enthusiastic celebrations of artists whose work we admire so greatly that we had to invent a podcast to talk about it. But in this very strange episode, we talk about a film so awful in so many ways that we are baffled by how it came from the same man who directed four unquestionable masterpieces in a row. The Rainmaker (1997) is–and we mean this without irony–a fascinating film that does everything that films like The Conversation and The Godfather Part II avoid. It works on paper: there's Coppola, of course, but also a bestseller as its source material, Matt Damon, Claire Danes, Mickey Roarke, Danny DeVito, Jon Voight, Danny Glover, and (inexplicably) Roy Scheider. But even Sheriff Brody can't kill this beast. Rather than offer a litany of complaints, we talk about the concept of a “shadow movie”: the movie that could have been, the one lurking beneath the film we actually see. This is the only episode in which we don't follow our usual three-part structure, because we didn't know if we'd be releasing this one. But we think that we can learn more about films from even one as terrible as this. If you're interested in the source for Coppola's film, you can find the novel here. Popular comedian Whitney Cummings caused quite a stir during the recent CNN New Year's Eve broadcast with Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen as she hilariously gored sacred cows left and right, alternately skewering Joe Biden, Kamala Harris and the Democrats over the massive coverup of Biden's dementia, Pfizer for pushing a vaccine of dubious efficacy on the whole country and even CNN itself for plummeting ratings. Whitney joins Jimmy and Americans' Comedian Kurt Metzger to discuss her now-legendary performance and the pushback she's inevitably received for promoting “conspiracy theories.” Plus a segment on the resurfacing of Stephen Colbert's awkward moment trying to silence Claire Danes as the actress began explaining that members of the intelligence community had told her of their adversarial relationship with the Trump administration. Also featuring Stef Zamorano!

Richard Rushfield sits down with Winnie Holzman, creator of the beloved but short-lived teen drama My So-Called Life, which ran for one 19-episode season from 1994-95 and later became a cross-generational cult hit. The show that launched Claire Danes and Jared Leto also captured adolescent angst onscreen in a totally new way — “School is a battlefield for your heart,” anyone? — that made ABC execs “deeply nervous,” says Holzman, though she was fiercely protected by her EPs and mentors, Marshall Herskovitz and Ed Zwick. A student of poetry and the Stanislavski system, Holzman, in a candid, hilarious and nostalgic conversation, unpacks the emotion and humor that propelled her through multiple 1990s TV successes to the Broadway hit Wicked (she wrote the book of the musical) and its two-part film adaptation, whose first installment is in the Oscar hunt. Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss Louisa May Alcott's 1868 novel, credited with starting the new genre of young adult fiction. When Alcott (1832-88) wrote Little Women, she only did so as her publisher refused to publish her father's book otherwise and as she hoped it would make money. It made Alcott's fortune. This coming of age story of Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy March, each overcoming their own moral flaws, has delighted generations of readers and was so popular from the start that Alcott wrote the second part in 1869 and further sequels and spin-offs in the coming years. Her work has inspired countless directors, composers and authors to make many reimagined versions ever since, with the sisters played by film actors such as Katherine Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor, Winona Ryder, Claire Danes, Kirsten Dunst, Saoirse Ronan and Emma Watson. If there's anything more daunting than interviewing a professional interviewer it's interviewing an award-winning professional interviewer. Today's guest Taffy Brodesser-Akner is a staff-writer on the New York Times and a legend amongst journalists who often find themselves on the monosyllabic side of a celebrity. (Her interview with Bradley Cooper refusing to be interviewed for is a masterclass.) Her debut novel Fleishman is in Trouble was a New York Times and Sunday Times bestseller and then, never having written a screenplay before, she adapted it into a hit miniseries, starring Claire Danes, for which she won an Emmy. I mean. Her new novel, Long Island Compromise, has just been bought by Apple TV and looks set to go the same way. It follows four decades in the life of a wealthy Jewish Long Island family whose patriarch is kidnapped in 1980. The fall out is the story. Wealth class privilege trauma BDSM and controlling mothers abound. I met Taffy in her publisher's office when she was visiting London to talk about her joy of turning 40 and realising the thing she'd been taught her whole life to be afraid of (middle age) was actually her ticket to freedom, the mystifying effect of money, the unlikely promise she made her mum and why her superpower is spotting a nose job. * You can buy all the books mentioned in this podcast at The Shift bookshop on Bookshop.org, including Long Island Compromise by Taffy Brodesser-Akner and the book that inspired this podcast, The Shift: how I lost and found myself after 40 - and you can too, by me. * If you enjoyed this episode and you fancy buying me a coffee, pop over to my page on buymeacoffee.com. • And if you'd like to support the work that goes into making this podcast and get a weekly newsletter plus loads more content including exclusive transcripts of the podcast, why not join The Shift community, come and have a look around at www.theshiftwithsambaker.substack.com • The Shift (on life after 40) with Sam Baker is created and hosted by Sam Baker and edited by Juliette Nicholls @ Pineapple Audio Production. Host Meg Wolitzer presents three works about idealized lives, and ideas about what constitutes an “ideal” life. “Boy Meets Girl” is Jen Kim's humorous version of a Hollywood love story. It's read by Tony Hale. In the John Cheever classic “The Worm in the Apple” a couple have the perfect life—but no one can believe it. It's read by Anne Meara. And a harried mother fantasizes about a brand new life in Vanessa Cuti's “Our Children,” performed by Claire Danes, followed by an interview with Danes..
Winnie Holzman's so-called writing career began innocently enough, writing and performing sketch material with the comedy group “Serious Bizness.” Next came an MFA from NYU in musical theatre, as well as a musical: “Birds of Paradise,” which was produced Off-Broadway and directed by her teacher, Arthur Laurents. She soon shifted gears, (and coasts) joining the writing staff of the ground-breaking television series “thirtysomething” and then creating theseries, “My So-Called Life,” which starred Claire Danes and which, thanks to MTV (and now HULU) has been seen all over the world. She collaborated “once and again” with her mentors Ed Zwick and Marshall Herskovitz on their critically acclaimed series “Once and Again;” and later collaborated with her daughter Savannah Dooley on their one hour drama series “Huge;” as well as with Cameron Crowe on the Showtime series “Roadies.” She is the book writer of the international hit musical Wicked, which has a score by the acclaimed composer/lyricist Stephen Schwartz. Wicked celebrated 20 years on Broadway this past fall. She recently completed both screenplays for the film adaptation of Wicked. Her play Choice, an early version of which had its world premiere at the Huntington Theatre in Boston, in 2016, will be produced this spring at the McCarter Theatre in Princeton, New Jersey. She is a proud member of the Writers Guild of America West, and the Dramatists Guild, and has been married to the wonderful character actor Paul Dooley for only 39 years. Paul Dooley is an actor, writer, and comedian, and has appeared in hundreds of movies, TV shows, and plays. His films include Breaking Away, Sixteen Candles, Runaway Bride, Popeye, Insom-nia, Waiting for Guffman, and the Cars franchise. His television appearances include roles in Curb Your Enthusiasm, My So-Called Life, Star Trek, Dream On (Emmy-nominated), and The Practice (Emmy-nominated).
