One day, several decades ago, the writer Winnie Holzman was shopping in a Manhattan bookstore where a particular cover caught her eye. It showed a woman with a green face, a black hat pulled down over her eyes. The book was “Wicked” by Gregory Maguire, a retelling of L. Frank Baum's “Oz” stories from the perspective of the Wicked Witch of the West. “When I turned it over and read the little précis on the back, it blew my mind,” Holzman said. “I thought it was such a brilliant premise.” The book ended up on Holzman's bookshelf, with its enigmatic cover facing out.Years later, the composer Stephen Schwartz contacted Holzman to ask if she'd be interested in adapting Maguire's book for the stage. The musical they wrote together opened in 2003, and it is now one of the most successful shows in Broadway history. The producers started talking about a movie adaptation, but Holzman was cautious: “We had to really kind of clear our minds and kind of reconceive the whole story.”The film version of “Wicked” opened in 2024, starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, and with a screenplay by Holzman and Dana Fox. It is one of the highest-grossing movies of the year and is nominated for 10 Academy Awards, including Best Picture.Winnie Holzman joins Gilbert Cruz, the editor of the Book Review, to discuss the benefits and drawbacks of adapting your own adaptation. Richard Rushfield sits down with Winnie Holzman, creator of the beloved but short-lived teen drama My So-Called Life, which ran for one 19-episode season from 1994-95 and later became a cross-generational cult hit. The show that launched Claire Danes and Jared Leto also captured adolescent angst onscreen in a totally new way — “School is a battlefield for your heart,” anyone? — that made ABC execs “deeply nervous,” says Holzman, though she was fiercely protected by her EPs and mentors, Marshall Herskovitz and Ed Zwick. A student of poetry and the Stanislavski system, Holzman, in a candid, hilarious and nostalgic conversation, unpacks the emotion and humor that propelled her through multiple 1990s TV successes to the Broadway hit Wicked (she wrote the book of the musical) and its two-part film adaptation, whose first installment is in the Oscar hunt.  Learn more about your ad choices. De score voor Wicked, de verfilming van de musical met dezelfde titel van Stephen Schwarz en Winnie Holzman, werd gemaakt door Stephen Schwartz en John Powell. Powell kennen we ook van How to Train Your Dragon, The Bourne Identity, Happy Feet, en Solo: A Star Wars Story.

In this episode of the Fully-Booked podcast, we dive into the magical world of Wicked, the long-awaited film adaptation of the beloved Broadway musical. Releasing in two parts, with the first installment hitting theaters in November 2024, Wicked promises to enchant audiences with its dazzling visuals, incredible performances, and timeless themes of friendship, acceptance, and personal growth. The Enduring Legacy of Oz Before delving into the specifics of the film, it's important to recognize the enduring cultural impact of the Oz universe. L. Frank Baum's original novel, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, was published in 1900, sparking a franchise that has captivated audiences for over a century. From the iconic 1939 film starring Judy Garland to countless adaptations across various media, the world of Oz has become a beloved part of our collective imagination. Wicked, based on Gregory Maguire's 1995 novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, offers a fresh perspective on this classic tale. By exploring the origins and complex relationship between Elphaba (the Wicked Witch of the West) and Galinda (the Good Witch), the story challenges our preconceptions and invites us to consider the nature of good and evil. From Stage to Screen: Adapting a Broadway Sensation The journey of Wicked from page to stage to screen is a testament to the power of great storytelling. The musical, with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and a book by Winnie Holzman, premiered on Broadway in 2003 and quickly became a cultural phenomenon. With its soaring melodies, clever wordplay, and heartfelt performances, Wicked has captivated audiences worldwide for nearly two decades. Meaghan: Shout out to, like, what is it? Steven Schwartz, who I think wrote the original stage musical. Shout out to him because he wrote some bangers for Popular. Bringing this beloved musical to the big screen was no small feat. Director Jon M. Chu, known for his work on Crazy Rich Asians and In the Heights, faced the challenge of translating the stage production's magic and intimacy into a cinematic experience. By leveraging the power of film technology and assembling an all-star cast, Chu has created a visually stunning and emotionally resonant adaptation that stays true to the spirit of the original while expanding its scope and reach. A Star-Studded Cast and Stunning Visuals One of the film's greatest strengths is its exceptional cast. Pop sensation Ariana Grande brings her powerhouse vocals and comedic timing to the role of Galinda, while Tony Award-winner Cynthia Erivo delivers a deeply moving and nuanced portrayal of Elphaba. The chemistry between the two leads is palpable, and their performances anchor the film's emotional core. Meaghan: That's it. Like, I have no feelings really about Ariana Grande one way or another kind of thing, but she did a really good job. Shirin: She did a great job. Really good. The supporting cast is equally impressive, with standout turns from Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero, Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible, and Jeff Goldblum as the Wizard. Each actor brings depth and complexity to their role, elevating the material and creating a rich tapestry of characters. Visually, Wicked is a feast for the eyes. The production design is lush and immersive, with intricate costumes, jaw-dropping sets, and stunning visual effects that transport the audience to the magical land of Oz. The film's use of color and light is particularly noteworthy, with Elphaba's emerald green skin and Galinda's pastel pink wardrobe serving as visual markers of their characters' journeys. Themes and Resonance At its core, Wicked is a story about friendship, acceptance, and the power of personal choice. Through Elphaba and Galinda's unlikely bond, the film explores themes of prejudice, conformity, and the consequences of our actions. As Elphaba grapples with her identity and the expectations placed upon her, she becomes a symbol of resilience and self-acceptance in the face of adversity. Shirin: But, like, a lot of, like, you know, it's when you actually, like, think about the plot itself, which they've they've kind of peppered in a little bit more into this movie to make it a bit longer, it was very long. It was very long. Yes. The first this is like I said, they've split it into 2 bits. This is part 1. It was 2 hours and 40 minutes long. These themes resonate deeply with contemporary audiences, particularly in an era where issues of social justice and individual identity are at the forefront of public discourse. By presenting a nuanced and empathetic portrayal of characters who have been historically villainized or marginalized, Wicked encourages viewers to question their assumptions and embrace the complexity of the human experience. Conclusion: The Magic Lives On As we eagerly await the release of Wicked: Part 2, it's clear that the magic of this beloved story is as potent as ever. Through its stunning visuals, incredible performances, and timeless themes, the film adaptation of Wicked has proven itself a worthy successor to the Broadway musical and a testament to the enduring power of the Oz universe. Whether you're a longtime fan of the musical or a newcomer to the world of Elphaba and Galinda, Wicked is a must-see cinematic event that will leave you spellbound. As the film casts its enchanting spell over a new generation of viewers, one thing is certain: the magic of Oz will continue to captivate and inspire audiences for generations to come. Wicked (titled onscreen as Wicked: Part I) is a 2024 American musical fantasy film directed by Jon M. Chu and written by Winnie Holzman and Dana Fox, with songs by Stephen Schwartz. It is the first of a two-part film adaptation of the stage musical of the same name by Schwartz and Holzman, which was loosely based on the 1995 novel by Gregory Maguire, which in turn is based on L. Frank Baum's 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, its sequels and its 1939 film adaptation. The film covers the musical's first act. It stars Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba Thropp and Ariana Grande-Butera[b] as Galinda Upland. Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Bowen Yang, Marissa Bode, Peter Dinklage, Michelle Yeoh and Jeff Goldblum are featured in supporting roles. Set in the Land of Oz, mostly before Dorothy Gale's arrival from Kansas, it follows Elphaba as she embarks on her path to becoming the Wicked Witch of the West, and chronicles her friendship with her classmate Galinda, who becomes Glinda the Good. Universal Pictures and Marc Platt, who both produced the stage musical, announced the film adaptation in 2012. After a long development and multiple delays, partly due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Chu was hired to direct, with Erivo and Grande cast in 2021. The film was split into two to avoid cutting plot points and expand the characters' journeys and relationships. Principal photography began in England in December 2022, was interrupted in July 2023 by the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, and was resumed and completed in January 2024. Wicked premiered at the State Theatre in Sydney, Australia, on November 3, 2024, and was theatrically released in the United States on November 22. It received positive reviews and has grossed $360.3 million worldwide on a $150 million budget. Wicked Part Two is scheduled for release on November 21, 2025.

Before we get to this week's episode, I have a question for you. And that question is … do you have any questions for me? I ask because we're coming up on the 500th episode of The Sewers of Paris next month, and to celebrate I'm going to be doing a special Q&A episode where I answer questions from listeners. So if you have anything you'd like to ask — whether it's about the show, or for recommendations, or about pop culture and queer history — please send it along to at matt@mattbaume.com.Also, a head's up that may be of interest: This week sees the release of Part 1 of Wicked — a musical inspired by The Wizard of Oz. And although, when I initially heard about the film, years ago, my first reaction was “oh, there's no way that'll be any good” … folks, I've seen it, and it is, in fact, very good. So to mark the movie's release, I'm releasing special episode of my companion podcast, Matt's So-Cast Pod, where we talk about the strange parallels between the musical Wicked and the TV show My So-Called Life — both written by the same woman, Winnie Holzman. And also, on this week's Sewers of Paris, we're diving deep into the archives for a chat about why The Wizard of Oz has had particular resonance for gay men ever since the book was first published over a hundred and twenty years ago. My guest is Josh Trujillo, who was so obsessed with Oz that as a kid he attended Oz conventions, and discovered that they served as a sort of meeting-place for older closeted gay men who felt unable to meet in public or in bars.We spoke back in 2015 — it was the third-ever episode of this podcast! So my apologies that the audio quality is at times a little peaky. Nevertheless I hope you'll enjoy this trip back in time.

This episode originally aired on Feb. 14, 2023 “I moved on to the next thing I was going to write,” says the noted dramatist and television writer Winnie Holzman, recalling the cancellation of her critically-acclaimed series “My So-Called Life,” after just one season. “That's what we do as writers.  We move on to the next thing.”  Indeed. In Winnie Holzman's case, one of those “next things” turned out to be the book for the hit Broadway musical “Wicked,” with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz—one of the longest running shows in Broadway history. The collaboration earned her a prestigious Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Book of a Musical, as well as a Tony nomination for Best Book of a Musical. Prior to her Emmy-nominated work on “My So-Called Life,” which she created for executive producers Ed Zwick and Marshall Herskovitz, Winnie wrote several scripts for the Zwick-Herskovitz drama “Thirtysomething,” and she would go on to serve as executive producer of “Roadies,” created by Cameron Crowe, and as co-creator of the series “Huge,” with her daughter Savannah Dooley.  Join us as Winnie reflects on her wickedly successful career writing for the stage and the small screen, the many ways writers measure their successes, and the give-and-take that has fueled her collaborations with some of the most creative minds in theater and television. It is a loose adaptation of the 1995 Gregory Maguire novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, which in turn is based on L. Frank Baum's 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and its 1939 film adaptation. The musical is told from the perspective of two witches, Elphaba and Galinda, before and after Dorothy's arrival in Oz. The story explores the complex friendship between Elphaba (who becomes the Wicked Witch of the West) and Galinda (who becomes Glinda the Good). Their relationship is tested by their contrasting personalities, conflicting viewpoints, shared love interest, reactions to the corrupt rule of the Wonderful Wizard, and ultimately, Elphaba's tragic fall.Produced by Universal Stage Productions with producers Marc Platt, Jon B. Platt, and David Stone, director Joe Mantello and choreographer Wayne Cilento, the original production of Wicked premiered on Broadway at the Gershwin Theatre in October 2003, after completing pre-Broadway tryouts at San Francisco's Curran Theatre in May and June of that year. Its original stars included Idina Menzel as Elphaba, Kristin Chenoweth as Galinda, Norbert Leo Butz as Fiyero, and Joel Grey as the Wizard. The original Broadway production won a total of three Tony Awards and seven Drama Desk Awards, while its original cast album received a Grammy Award. The success of the Broadway production has spawned many productions worldwide, including a long-running West End production. Wicked has broken box-office records around the world, holding weekly-gross-takings records in Los Angeles, Chicago, St. Louis, and London. In the week ending January 2, 2011, the London, Broadway, and both North American touring productions simultaneously broke their respective records for the highest weekly gross. In the final week of 2013, the Broadway production broke this record again, earning $3.2 million. In 2016, Wicked surpassed $1 billion in total Broadway revenue, joining The Phantom of the Opera and The Lion King as the only Broadway shows to do so. In 2017, Wicked surpassed The Phantom of the Opera as Broadway's second-highest grossing musical, trailing only The Lion King.A two-part film adaptation was directed by Jon M. Chu and starred Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, Ariana Grande as Galinda, Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero, and Jeff Goldblum as the Wizard. The first part was released on November 22, 2024, with the second part to premiere on November 21, 2025.This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:39 UTC on Monday, 25 November 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Wicked (musical) on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm generative Matthew.

Hey everyone, Jon M. Chu's Wicked - actually titled Wicked: Part I in the movie - has now hit theaters. To let you know right upfront, I'm not necessarily the biggest musical guy and witchcraft fantasy stuff has never been a genre of film & TV that I've ever been interested in. Plus, I have never seen the broadway play so have virtually no connection to the source material. I have now seen the film. Is it overhyped or legitimately Best Picture worthy? Find out in this review! Wicked: Directed by: Jon M. Winnie Holzman's so-called writing career began innocently enough, writing and performing sketch material with the comedy group “Serious Bizness.” Next came an MFA from NYU in musical theatre, as well as a musical: “Birds of Paradise,” which was produced Off-Broadway and directed by her teacher, Arthur Laurents.  She soon shifted gears, (and coasts) joining the writing staff of the ground-breaking television series “thirtysomething” and then creating theseries, “My So-Called Life,” which starred Claire Danes and which, thanks to MTV (and now HULU) has been seen all over the world.  She collaborated “once and again” with her mentors Ed Zwick and Marshall Herskovitz on their critically acclaimed series “Once and Again;” and later collaborated with her daughter Savannah Dooley on their one hour drama series “Huge;” as well as with Cameron Crowe on the Showtime series “Roadies.”   She is the book writer of the international hit musical Wicked, which has a score by the acclaimed composer/lyricist Stephen Schwartz. Wicked celebrated 20 years on Broadway this past fall.  She recently completed both screenplays for the film adaptation of Wicked. Her play Choice, an early version of which had its world premiere at the Huntington Theatre in Boston, in 2016, will be produced this spring at the McCarter Theatre in Princeton, New Jersey.  She is a proud member of the Writers Guild of America West, and the Dramatists Guild, and has been married to the wonderful character actor Paul Dooley for only 39 years. Paul Dooley is an actor, writer, and comedian, and has appeared in hundreds of movies, TV shows, and plays. Is it a lack of self-esteem that leads to us posting a second show dedicated to episode 12 of My So-Called Life? Connor and Dylan are joined by Christopher Fitzgerald (Wicked, Waitress). As the boys continue to festivate over Wicked's 20th anniversary, the original Bick, oh sorry… Boq joins them to talk all things Oz. It's a rare podcast appearance for a man who's had a plethora of Broadway appearances! They reminisce on Chris' early days discovering Boq, seeing Kristin and Idina build their iconic performances, and how he himself was encouraged to expand on character content for Joe Mantello and Winnie Holzman. We got the EXCLUSIVE. We also dive into his illustrious Broadway credits, including his time in Waitress, Finian's Rainbow, Young Frankenstein, Company, and the controversial Corpus Christi. Soon you'll see Chris in his next venture: playing Patsy in the revival of Spamalot!
