Jace chat with Patrick McEvoy about bringing back on of the earliest Kaiju, Gorgo. First seen in a classic British B-movie from 1961, the fil has gained a cult following in the ensuing years. Filled with interesting metaphors and set in the beginning of the Cold War, there is plenty to unpack in this one. Patrick gives us some insight into the story and setting, as well as, teasing how Gorgo fits into a larger shared universe he is developing.

Join Dan and Tom as they discover THE TRAITORS, a 1962 British B Spy Movie. Does it make the Grade? Low budget B movies were made, for the most part, to be the second billing on double features. Low-budget doesn't necessarily mean a bad movie. In this episode we dive into THE TRAITORS without giving away the movie. THE TRAITORS has a good cast starring Patrick Allen, James Maxwell, Jacqueline Ellis, and Zena Walker. We look at the high-level plot, what makes this a B movie, how espionage is portrayed, the music and more. For the most part, this is espionage! At Spy Movie Navigator, one of our goals is to identify Influences. Specifically, where a movie was influenced by or has influenced other spy movies and real life. THE TRAITORS has significantly influenced parts of THE FOURTH PROTOCOL, ALLIED, the the Harry Palmer Series, ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE, THUNDERBALL, LICENCE TO KILL and more. Take a listen to find out about these influences. THE TRAITORS is a fairly common name for movie titles and television shows, including the currently airing games show. So, to be clear, we're examining the 1962 movie here. So, join Dan and Tom for their THE TRAITORS - A British B Movie Makes the Grade episode. After almost two years of using the Edgar Wallace theme we finally get around to covering one of Merton Park studio's early Wallace thrillers, The Clue of the Twisted Candle (Allan Davies, 1960), paired with another low-budget second feature, The House of Mystery (Vernon Sewell, 1961). We take this opportunity to discuss Dr Laura Mayne's article 'Whatever happened to the British ‘B' movie? Micro-budget film-making and the death of the one-hour supporting feature in the early 1960s', which was published in the Historical Journal of Film, Radio and Television.   Vidcast:  https://youtu.be/OVhnRPT-mAI   An experimental CoVid vaccine based on the the B.1.351 South African variant appears to induce protective neutralizing antibodies against all principal CoVid variants and the original strain.  Chinese investigators studied this novel vaccine in a mouse model.   The B.1.351 spike protein contains 3 of the principals mutations found in CoVid variants of concern including the British B.1.117 and the Brazilian P.1.  The best antibody levels against original CoVid and the variants was induced by two doses of the B.1.351 vaccine.  Two doses of the original vaccine and boosting with either a 3rd dose of the original or the B.1.351 vaccine produced comparable protection.   https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2021.05.16.444369v1.full.pdf+html   #CoVid #variants #vaccine

Vidcast:  https://youtu.be/RMPpAQAprE4   Reports on the two mRNA vaccines Americans are receiving were published just days ago in the New England Journal of Medicine by Moderna and Pfizer with their academic collaborators.  Both vaccines trigger antibodies that neutralize the original predominant Wuhan strain and the British B.1.117 variants but have reduced though still lethal activity against the South African B.1.351 variant.   Using sera from vaccinated Americans, the Moderna-NIH team demonstrate equally effective neutralizing antibody levels for the prevalent original strain and the British B.1.1.7 variant.  Moderna-induced antibody is nearly 10-fold less effective against the South African B.1.351 variant, but it does neutralize.   The Pfizer-BioNTech-University of Texas team report the effectiveness of their vaccine-induced antibodies against the prevalent CoVid strain as well as against the South African strain.  The antibody strength against the latter was reduced by two-thirds but still effective.     As yet, there is no compelling study data on either vaccine for the Brazilian P1 variant.   https://www.nejm.org/doi/pdf/10.1056/NEJMc2102179?query=pfw&jwd=000013110419&jspc=MPD https://www.nejm.org/doi/pdf/10.1056/NEJMc2102017?query=pfw&jwd=000013110419&jspc=MPD   #CoVid #moderna #pfizer #vaccine #wuhan #b117 #b1351

Vidcast:  https://youtu.be/fLyp9qqfU8w   Antibodies produced by persons immunized with the Moderna CoVid vaccine could capably neutralize the British and South African coronavirus strains in the test tube.  This the conclusion of  testing completed by Moderna and the NIH Vaccine Research Center.   Detailed testing revealed that Moderna vaccination yielded antibodies equally capable of protecting against the British B.1.1.7 CoVid strain as against the original Wuhan CoVid strain.  Against the South African B.1.351 strain, the Moderna-induced antibodies were less powerful but still could get the job done.  A booster shot is planned.   The Moderna mRNA vaccine produces more powerful antibodies than a natural CoVid infection. Even those who have weathered CoVid should be vaccinated.   https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2021.01.25.427948v1.full.pdf   #covid #moderna #vaccine #britishvariant #southafricanvariant #b117 #b1351

Who would ever have imagined that a turn of the century British mystery writer would prove so influential in postwar Germany? And yet, the surprisingly prolific German krimi became the staple of Teutonic cinema throughout the 1960's, with colorful, serial-inflected comic book style Edgar, Bryan Edgar and faux-Wallaces comprising what seemed to be the entire filmic output of the central European nation for over a decade!  Tag in the similar if related Dr. Mabuse, and that pretty much covers it... It's a back to basics, good old fashioned family values 35th episode of Rum Doings. Just Nick, John, a microphone and a disgusting bottle of rum. And this week we're not discussing whether FIFA should have to bring in the rule that they should have the cameras in the goal posts to see if the goals are scored instigated. We bring you some genuinely excellent news from Sainsbury's (which apparently might be quite old news), and then move on to talk about John's weekend break, and the joys of a British B&B. This of course involves tales of ketchup and coffee. We talk about awful people, and responses to cold callers. Nick predicts the end-times, which brings us to the stories about the BP methane bubble. And where exactly does oil come from? We finish by talking about Raoul Moat, although this was recorded before Cameron made his remarkable comments about feeling no sympathy.
