With a background in functional health, she combines her expertise with a passion for educating listeners on preventive health measures. Through her podcast, Dr. Hieshetter aims to empower people with knowledge to make informed health decisions. Episode Summary: In this eye-opening episode of Functional Health Radio, Dr. Hieshetter tackles the pervasive issue of titanium dioxide found in everyday products. She explains the health risks associated with this widely-used chemical, particularly its presence in foods and personal care items. Dr. Hieshetter emphasizes the importance of understanding what we consume and its impact on health, urging her listeners to take a proactive role in avoiding harmful substances. Dr. Hieshetter dives deep into the research regarding titanium dioxide, focusing on its toxic potential and correlation with cancer risk. She shares detailed findings from scientific studies showing how titanium dioxide affects DNA and promotes cancerous growth, especially noting its impact on children's health. SEO keywords such as "titanium dioxide dangers," "cancer risk," and "healthier alternatives" run throughout her analysis, providing listeners with an insightful understanding of this chemical's hazards. Dr. Highshedder stresses the urgent need for regulatory bodies to reassess the safety approvals for titanium dioxide and encourages individuals to be their own health advocates by avoiding products that contain it. Key Takeaways: Titanium Dioxide in Everyday Products: Titanium dioxide is commonly found in products such as toothpaste, candies, sunscreen, and some processed foods, posing potential health risks. Health Concerns and Risks: It has been linked to DNA damage, cancer, and negative impacts on children's health, including anxiety and developmental issues. Regulation and Safety: Despite known dangers, regulatory agencies have been slow to regulate titanium dioxide effectively, which necessitates individual vigilance. Encouragement for Vigilance: Consumers are urged to read product labels carefully and choose products free from titanium dioxide to reduce health risks. Healthier Alternatives: Dr. Highshedder suggests using natural ingredients and making informed food choices to protect one's health and that of their family. Notable Quotes: “Titanium dioxide is a nasty chemical found in many daily products, and it can cause lung cancer when inhaled.” “Animal studies show that nano titanium dioxide crosses the gut-brain barrier and causes paraneoplastic lesions and anxiety.” "Food matters. Everything you put in your body is either immediately going to help you or immediately harm you." "Ingesting titanium dioxide is associated with chronic intestinal inflammation and cancer." "No one thinks that they want to wake up and get cancer. We need to avoid things that deliberately harm." Resources: International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health: Referenced for a study on the toxicity of titanium dioxide. Journal of Applied Toxicology: Discussed research on liver toxicity related to titanium dioxide. Fictional Book: "Johnson and Johnson, No More Tears" was mentioned to highlight corporate responsibility and cover-up issues (Note: This book is hypothetical in the transcript). Yucca App: Suggested by Dr. Hieshetter to find safe products by scanning in-store items. Engage with the full episode for an in-depth understanding of these critical health insights, and stay tuned for more enlightening content from Functional Health Radio.

Dr. Frank Bedu-Addo, President and CEO of PDS Biotechnology, focuses on the challenge of cancer recurrence and the development of a targeted immunotherapy approach using nanoparticle technology. Their lead immunotherapy candidate is designed to train the immune system to detect and attack microscopic or undetectable cancer cells, prolonging survival by preventing recurrence. Early clinical results in cervical, head and neck, and other HPV 16-positive cancers have been promising, showing sustained immune response leading to long-lasting T cell memory.  Frank explains, "Recurrence of cancer after treatment is actually one of the bigger hurdles we face in successfully treating cancer. So, PDS Biotechnology, as you know, we have a sharp focus on advancing our targeted immunotherapy platforms to address significant unmet needs in treating cancer. And this is actually one of those key unmet needs in cancer today. The prevailing hypothesis on knowledge is that cancer treatment, whether it's done using radiation therapy or anti-cancer drugs such as chemotherapy, both methods actually work by destroying cancer cells or halting the growth."   "And so what may happen with time is that these remaining cancer cells may then grow until they can be detected or begin to cause symptoms. Now, even if the cancer has been removed by surgery, there is still a risk that some tiny microscopic cancer cells could still remain in the body. We would therefore expect the ideal immunotherapy to be able to detect these tiny microscopic cancer cells, even if they have spread to other parts of the body."  #PDSBiotech #Cancer #CancerVaccines #ImmunoOncology #CancerRecurrence PDSbiotech.com Download the transcript here

Marama Labs, a rapidly growing scientific instrumentation innovator, announces the launch of its revolutionary new CloudSpec instrument for nanomedicine developers. CloudSpec's patented technology slashes development times for advanced nanoparticle drug formulations used in gene therapies, vaccines, and cancer treatments. Lipid Nanoparticle (LNP) therapies are a hugely valuable class of biopharmaceutical nanomedicines; their use in Covid vaccines demonstrated the power and speed-to-market that RNA-loaded LNPs enable. The LNP market is expected to grow 7x within the next 10 years, as new therapies are developed for some of the hardest-to-drug diseases in cancer, genetic disorders and even the common cold. CloudSpec accelerates LNP development by solving a critical bottleneck - quantifying the drug payload in seconds - while current methods take hours. Breaking the bottleneck in nanomedicine development LNPs are tiny insoluble particles embedded with RNA or DNA. They are difficult to analyse directly due to their small size and light-scattering properties. CloudSpec's Scatter-Free Absorption (SFA) technology enables fast and accurate results using a new approach based on easy-to-use UV analysis. CloudSpec eliminates the need to break up the particles for analysis and doesn't require hard-to-use fluorescent dyes. CloudSpec measurements take 15 seconds compared to 2 hours using existing methods. By measuring intact particles, CloudSpec provides results from sample to answer in just a few minutes. CloudSpec is expected to revolutionise how lipid nanoparticles are analysed and quantified. "We are thrilled to introduce the CloudSpec instrument to the market," said Brendan Darby, CEO of Marama Labs. "This innovative technology represents a significant advancement in the field of nanomedicine, and we are confident that it will transform research with lipid nanoparticles." "We worked with some of the leading names in RNA-LNP biopharma to develop CloudSpec for this market. It has received a hugely positive response from our users, who are desperate to get away from the current slow, labour-intensive and inaccurate fluorescence measurements. CloudSpec gets them over the drug assay bottleneck and will speed up delivery to market", said Darren Andrews, CCO of Marama Labs. CloudSpec's launch to market will be spearheaded by a webinar on 7 May 2025 from two of CloudSpec's users from our Early Access Programme - Dr. Emily Young of 4basebio (UK) and Dr. Johanna Simon of Merck KGaA (Germany). Registration for the webinar is available here https://beacon-intelligence.com/webinar/rna-dna-quantification-in-lnps/. Shaun Rothwell is Chairman and CEO of EVOQ Nano, a company focused on developing antimicrobial technology to combat healthcare-associated infections. EVOQ nanotechnology involves a unique non-ionic silver nanoparticle that can effectively kill even the most dangerous drug-resistant bacteria. These nanoparticles can be incorporated into medical devices to prevent bacteria from colonizing and causing infections. The bacteria can not form resistance to the nanoparticles, making hospitals safer for patients and healthcare workers. Shaun explains, "We're surrounded by bacteria all day, every day. When compromised, when we're compromised from an immune perspective, those infections take hold and cause some serious damage in addition to acquired healthcare-associated infections. We understand that paying attention to the issues of the healthcare system today also involves antimicrobial resistance. These bugs are hiding and present everywhere around us. The antibiotic solutions available today are becoming less and less effective over time because these bugs are developing resistance against them. So we have a two-pronged approach to addressing this around AMR, antimicrobial resistance, and impacting healthcare-associated infections. "At EVOQ Nano, we have created and patented very unique nanoparticles. We can make these nanoparticles out of a variety of different platforms, but we're focused on silver right now. One of our challenges when we first introduced it was that silver was commonly known to emit ions. And the reason that it's effective against bacteria is because of that ion emission. And those ions lyse the cell wall and destroy the bacteria even with these silver chlorides. They've been heavily used with coatings and different applications on catheters and different devices. The same reason it's had some effect is also why it's dangerous and toxic at high levels with this ion emission." "The EVQ 218 asset that we have is perfectly spherical, non-ionic silver, a completely new form of silver that has never been created before. And we've been successful in creating this. We have been able to go through a variety of studies at the Seattle Children's Institute with the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation's help to prove efficacy. When we were first tested, we were successful in killing 64 isolates from the six most dangerous drug-resistant bacteria known to man, as recognized by the World Health Organization."  #EVOQNano #HospitalAssociatedInfections #HAI #NanoParticles #SuperBugs #Catheters evoqnano.com Download the transcript here

Dr. Harven DeShield is the CEO and Co-Founder of Vivacelle Bio, which is developing a nanoparticle-based treatment called VBI-S to address the underlying causes of septic shock. The treatment works by efficiently redistributing nitric oxide to help regulate blood pressure and improve organ function, reducing the need for traditional vasopressor treatments. Vivacelle is also developing a product to help address hemorrhagic shock and minimize reperfusion injury. Harven explains, "There are seven aspects to septic shock - actually eight. So, first, you have an infection. You have to have an infection, whether it is a bacterial, virus, or fungus. And then, eventually, they give you fluids—your blood pressure drops. And so, they try to correct that by giving you fluids. And when the fluids fail, then you transition from sepsis to septic shock." "Then, you are also dealing with the fact that they put you on vasopressors once you get into septic shock. When they put you on vasopressors, that creates another whole realm of problems, which I can get into later. But, essentially, they have some serious toxicity effects, including reducing cardiac output. It causes cardiac arrhythmia and blood clots and can even lead somebody to go into hemorrhagic shock. So, you have the infection problems, you have the relative and absolute hypovolemia problem." "Our product, for example, works within, and I'm using phase 2a - we see results in as little as 90 minutes, in terms of, at least, correcting the blood pressure. And it really can be very severe, and time is of the essence. There used to be something they called the "golden hour”.  This means you have an hour, depending on how low your blood pressure is. Now, some people call it the "platinum ten minutes". #VivacelleBio #SepticShock #Sepsis #Hypovolemia #UrgentCareTreatment vivicellebio.com Listen to the podcast here

Imagine a nanoparticle, less that a thousandth of the width of a human hair, that is so precise that it can carry a medicine to just where it's needed in the body, improving the drug's impact and reducing side effects. Ijeoma Uchegbu, Professor of Pharmaceutical Nanoscience at University College London, has spent her career with this goal in mind. She creates nanoparticles to carry medicines to regions of the body that are notoriously hard to reach, such as the back of the eye and the brain. With clinical trials in the pipeline, she hopes to treat blindness with eyedrops, transform pain relief and tackle the opioid crisis. Ijeoma took an unconventional route into science. Growing up in the UK and in Nigeria, she tells Professor Jim Al-Khalili her remarkable life story, from being fostered by a white family in rural Kent, while her Nigerian parents finished their studies, to struggling to pay the bills through her PhD as a single mum with young children. So passionate is Ijeoma to spread her love of science, she's even turned to stand-up comedy to help get her message across! Presented by JIm Al-Khalili Produced by Beth Eastwood

Upgrades to the power grid under a new rule could help accommodate an increasing renewable energy supply and meet data center demands. Also, extremely small particles might help scientists develop vaccines that are stable at room temperature and easier to administer.New Rule Sets Stage For Electric Grid UpdateThe US electric grid is straining to keep up with demand. For starters, our warming climate means more electricity is needed to keep people cool. Last summer—which was the hottest on record—energy demand in the US experienced an all-time hourly peak. And even though more renewable energy is being produced, our current grid, largely built in the 1960s and 1970s, was not built to handle those needs. Increased use of AI and cryptocurrency, which require power-hungry data centers, have only increased the burden on the grid. But on Monday, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission approved new rules to upgrade the grid to accommodate rising demands. The policy includes approval for the construction of new transmission lines and modification of existing transmission facilities.Casey Crownhart, climate reporter for the MIT Technology Review, joins Ira to talk about this and other science stories of the week, including how a recent ocean heatwave will impact ocean life and the upcoming hurricane season, a new self-collection test for cervical cancer, and how a tiny beetle uses audio mimicry to avoid being eaten by bats.Could Vaccines Of The Future Be Made With Nanoparticles? In 2021, vaccines for COVID-19 were released, a little over a year after the SARS-CoV-2 virus triggered a global pandemic. Their remarkably short production time wasn't the result of a rush-job, but a culmination of decades of advancements in infrastructure, basic science, and mRNA technology. But despite the years of innovations that allowed those vaccines to be developed and mass-produced so quickly, their delivery method—an injection—still has some drawbacks. Most injected vaccines need to be kept cold, and some require multiple trips to a pharmacy. And people with needle phobias may be reluctant to get them altogether. So what could the vaccines of the future look like?Dr. Balaji Narasimhan, distinguished professor and director of the Nanovaccine Institute at Iowa State University, joins Ira Flatow onstage in Ames, Iowa, to talk about how his lab is using nanotechnology to develop the next generation of vaccines, and how they could be more effective than current vaccines in the face of the next pandemic.Transcripts for each segment will be available after the show airs on sciencefriday.com.  Subscribe to this podcast. Even under the best conditions, crops need our assistance to survive the numerous threats that limit production. Classically, synthetic and natural compounds have been used to control insects, fungi and weeds, sometimes with negative collateral effects or fostering resistance of genetically tolerant genotypes. Todd Hauser from Trillium Ag describes his company's novel RNAi approach.  RNAi can be used to target specific insect species, and his company's design and particle-based technology appears to offer safety, effectiveness, and specificity. We discuss the use of RNAi and how it may be a key point of crop protection strategies, along with its inherent challenges.
