Hello, and welcome to the latest episode of the Cinema Australia Podcast. My name is Matthew Eeles. In this episode, I'm joined by Danielle Stamoulos, the writer and lead actor of the impressive new short film, Gorgo. Regular listeners will notice that this Podcast episode is shorter than usual as it was originally recorded for my radio show on 2RRR. Danielle is an AACTA-winning Greek-Australian filmmaker, actor, and writer working across film, TV, and theatre. Her short film GORGO, which she created, wrote, and starred in, won the 2025 AACTA Award for Best Australian Short Film. It also screened at major festivals, including Santa Barbara, Flickerfest (winning Best Original Music), St Kilda, Newport Beach, and Rhode Island. Danielle also won Best Performance at the recent 2025 Stellar Film Festival. Inspired by Greek ‘promised brides' & Ovid's Medusa myth, Gorgo is a dramatic short film that tells the story of a Greek bride's cross-continental journey to marry a man she has never met. Matchmade by her best friend Athina, with promises of a new future in a distant land, Medousa finds herself arriving in Australia to a strange home—and a cold welcome. Thrust into her new marriage, she soon discovers a monstrous secret that threatens to tear apart the best friends' vow of sisterhood. I really hope you get to see the incredibly moving short film at some stage. Keep an eye on cinemaaustralia.com.au and we will try to keep you as up to date as possible. Anyway… enjoy.

Behold the film that smashed its way into pop culture's radioactive kaiju heart, inspiring Godzilla and an entire genre! Not to mention putting Ray Harryhausen and Ray Bradbury on the map - two dino-nerds who changed science fiction forever. Plus, we discuss the Six Degrees of Beast, with its connections to Psycho, Jean Renoir, and the Man with No Name trilogy; then we get into a fight about The Valley of Gwangi. THEN, Peter Lorre returns with the premiere of "The Poverty Row Picture Show". THEN... whew, it's too much for the show notes.Enjoy this jampacked episode of monster movie goodness! It's special guest Scott Meyer talking about the monster movie Gorgo with the Kaiju Hollywood bad boys Brandon, Martin and Luke, all thanks to a special request from a very British fan. What a great reminder to email us your suggestions and weird writings to podzookypodcast@gmail.com! This one gets wild fast with the highlights being the new rules of Podzooky (I will not write out all 5), Perfect actors for bad people and quite a few interesting recommendations at the end.

Patrick McEvoy from Gorgo Legacy comes to the podcast in Episode #644 this week! Patrick's 72+-page graphic novel is being crowfunded on Zoop.gg, which you can find at this link. It is described this way: “1953. World War II is over, and the Cold War has taken its place. A secret international agency known as SERENITY monitors -- and often conceals -- the threat of giant monsters they term ‘mega-cryptids.' The Kaiju! AGENT BENSON might well have saved the world in his first mission for Serenity. But it has left deep scars on his psyche, cursing him with weird visions of the future. Benson must now investigate strange events on an isolated isle off the coast of Ireland. Now, in this prequel to the legendary GORGO film, Benson's dark visions of tomorrow loom. A KAIJU BLOOD FEUD and COLD WAR INTRIGUE will soon collide in the deadly waters of the North Atlantic!” We discuss how this book came to be, Gorgo's history, who the characters are in this new comic book graphic novel, and what we can expect from Patrick and Titanic Creations in the coming months! Don't miss this excellent conversation, then support this already-successful crowdfunding that wants you support before it concludes on or around June 27! Jace chat with Patrick McEvoy about bringing back on of the earliest Kaiju, Gorgo. First seen in a classic British B-movie from 1961, the fil has gained a cult following in the ensuing years. Filled with interesting metaphors and set in the beginning of the Cold War, there is plenty to unpack in this one. Patrick gives us some insight into the story and setting, as well as, teasing how Gorgo fits into a larger shared universe he is developing.

There is a great story about a young Spartan woman, Gorgo, who would one day become queen. Despite her royal status, like all Spartans she was raised to be self-sufficient, and without any frills or needless luxury. So imagine Gorgo's surprise when she witnessed a distinguished visitor to Sparta have his shoes put on by a servant. “Look, father,” she said, “the stranger has no hands!” ✉️ Sign up for the Daily Dad email: DailyDad.com

The battle of Salamis was the defining naval conflict of the ancient Greek world. Occurring in the wake of the Greek defeat at Thermopylae, the allied Hellenic fleet lined up in the narrow strait between mainland Attica and the nearby island of Salamis. Opposing them was the might of Persia's seabound forces. Although whittled down somewhat via storms, attrition and conflict, the Mede still outnumbered their opponents by a ratio of around 4 to 1.Joining me to discuss the conflict is Cornell University Professor and esteemed author, Professor Barry Strauss. Released in 2006, his work titled the Battle of Salamis was in the Professor's own words his 'love letter to Athens.' And it is to the Athenians that the lion's share of glory belongs to in this episode.Although nominally under Spartan command, the backbone of the fleet was made up by Athenian citizens who, under the guidance of the visionary Themistocles, built a navy capable of withstanding the will of an eastern potentate. I hope you enjoy our discussion and, take good care.CONTRIBUTE HEREhttps://www.buymeacoffee.com/spartanhistoryhttps://paypal.me/SpartanHistoryFIND ME HEREhttps://www.facebook.com/spartanhistorypodcasthttps://twitter.com/Spartan_History

What better way to celebrate Mother's Day than with a film about the greatest monster mama of them all? This installment of YHS on Monster Island is jam-packed with kaiju goodness, including a full review of the 1961 British-Irish-American co-production, Gorgo. Jake and Jay discuss suit design, who is actually the real protagonist, and if this movie had the most powerful net in the history of cinema! On top of reviewing the "Big G" - okay, the other "Big G" - okay, the third "Big G", the duo talk pick-ups including some Harryhausen awesomeness and more BioGojis, Jay's recent obscure tokusatsu binge into the worlds of Fireman, Mirrorman, and Spectreman, why it's hard to rank Ultra Q episodes, a host of toy reveals from Super Festival 85 and the 6th Mandarake Creative Sofubi Rally, Gamera: Rebirth giving us a tentative release date and a teaser image of Zigra, animal rights, and the first (and only) edition of Gorgo Movie Posters from Around the World! It's a wild and chaotic episode, no doubt...so enjoy!
There is a great story about a young Spartan woman, Gorgo, who would one day become queen. Despite her royal status, like all Spartans she was raised to be self-sufficient, with no frills or needless luxury. So imagine Gorgo's surprise when she witnessed a distinguished visitor to Sparta have his shoes put on by a servant. “Look, Father,” she said innocently to her father, King Leonidas, “the stranger has no hands!” Sadly, for some of us, it could just as easily be deduced that our kids have no hands. And no brains. We put on their clothes for them. We make their decisions. We clear the road in front like a snowplow. We hover like a helicopter, just in case something goes wrong. We do everything for them. Then we wonder why they are helpless.---And in today's Ask Daily Stoic, Ryan answers questions from a virtual audience as part of a Stoicism Q&A session. Topics covered include the concept of the Passions, how to read the classics, the representation of the Virtues in The Gladiator, and more.✉️ Sign up for the Daily Stoic email: https://dailystoic.com/dailyemail

As always, Jake and Jay will share their weekly kaiju collectible pick-ups!

Thermopylae. The title is synonymous with a bygone age of glory, bravery and defiance. It is an event entirely pivotal to the Spartan story and indeed, of this podcast as well. The events at the hot gates were one of the few natural places a chronological history of the Spartans would assuredly cover. It would be fair to say I dragged it out for as long as possible, well we are here now.I'm joined by Professor Paul Cartledge who is without a doubt the greatest living expert on Sparta, there could be no one more fitting to discuss this topic with. With his customary eloquence, breathtaking knowledge and passion for Laconia he takes us through those 3 fateful days that saw Leonidas and his brave 300 write their Polis' legend into the annals of history. There were of course others who stood with the Spartans at the pass, but although mentioned, this isn't the podcast for their story. With the Professors help we zero in on the facts and the myth making that has made Thermopylae one of the most recognizable events of all those that have come down to us. I hope you all enjoy, and take good care.CONTRIBUTE HEREhttps://www.buymeacoffee.com/spartanhistoryhttps://paypal.me/SpartanHistoryFIND ME HEREhttps://www.facebook.com/spartanhistorypodcasthttps://twitter.com/Spartan_History
