Learn how to meet deadlines. learn how to get stuff done. Get stuff out of your head onto the page. You have to engage people these days on the first page, that is absolutely true. But that's not the same as starting with a plane crash. But you have to have something there. And work on the prose. I know it can be kind of tedious, but look at the shape of sentences. Don't repeat words too often. Think hard about stuff like character names. It's difficult. Most people in their life have like one or two children they have to name. Authors have to name thousands of people over a career. So give some thought to that. If you're writing historical fiction, learn what names were actually invented recently and you'll look an idiot if you put them in your medieval character called Vanessa or Pamela. Don't! But also work out what names were popular in the 1940s if you're writing then. That's relatively easy to find out because now there are lists of what names were popular. But also think about your character's parents and whether they would pick a popular name. Maybe they wouldn't if they're strange or unconventional people or if they're in one of those families that likes to pass down embarrassing names to their children. think about where your characters come from, what shapes them before you get to the story, the adventure they're involved in. Remember that other people have different obsessions to you or different habits to you. It's not so common now, but you used to be able to tell if an author was a smoker by the fact that all their characters puffed all the time. And I know that there are probably things that... In fact, as a non-driver, I know that I very rarely describe driving. But sometimes you sort of have to and I suspect there are howlers in that because it's not an experience I have. That's the other thing, entertain yourself. If you don't do that nobody else is going to enjoy it either.

Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror is a 1922 silent German Expressionist vampire film directed by F. W. Murnau and starring Max Schreck as Count Orlok, a vampire who preys on the wife of his estate agent and brings the plague to their town. What happens when fantasy meets the First World War? This month, we read 'The Warm Hands of Ghosts' by Katherine Arden, a novel which follows Canadian nurse Laura Iven as she searches for her brother behind the lines in the militarised area known as the ‘Forbidden Zone'. The plot hinges around a mysterious character called Faland, who runs an elusive hotel with no set location that men find to drink and relax In the discussion, we consider the fictional use of historical characters, whether the war began in 1917, and Chris' new scale for measuring war-related novels. Kim Newman in conversation with Jordan SorceryKim Newman has had a long and successful career as an author famous for his Anno Dracula series, as a television personality, and as Empire's horror expert since the magazine's very first issue. But there is another aspect to the remarkable history of this remarkable writer - his time writing the very first Warhammer Fantasy novel, Drachenfels.Under the banner of Games Workshop's first publishing imprint, GW Books, and the pseudonym Jack Yeovil, Kim Newman wrote a series of short stories and novels set in the fledgling Warhammer Fantasy world, as well as an intricately plotted dystopian tale set in the short-lived Mad Max fuelled world of Dark Future.Kim talks to me about the beginnings of GW Books, his work for Games Workshop both published and unpublished, and returning to the characters years later to pen a new tale for the Black Library.Kim's Links:Kim Newman's Website [https://johnnyalucard.com/]Support my work:Patreon [https://www.patreon.com/jordansorcery]Element Games Affiliate Link [https://elementgames.co.uk/?d=11216]Download my Fantasy Battle Scenario: Dead King Wenceslas [https://jordansorcery.itch.io/dead-king-wenceslas]Ko-Fi [https://ko-fi.com/jordansorcery]Discord [My Discord is now exclusive to Patreon supporters]This episode was originally released via YouTube: https://youtu.be/SftR6a8jIpk
JAMES GONIS, SHAWN SHERIDAN, LARRY STROTHE, and MATT WEINHOLD, invite a revered British horror scholar to share the mic, and talk about a beloved era of horror cinema. MONSTER PARTY presents a special "across the pond" episode that we've playfully titled... LET'S SCARE KIM NEWMAN TO DEATH: HIDDEN HORROR GEMS OF THE 70S!!! If you're a monster kid and are not aware of KIM NEWMAN, this is the moment when your life gets back on track. Mr. Newman is an award-winning journalist, film critic, and author, whose works include the immensely popular ANNO DRACULA series of novels, the essential horror cinema book, NIGHTMARE MOVIES, and the upcoming yuletide novella, A CHRISTMAS GHOST STORY! Kim has also worked as a film critic for EMPIRE, ROTTEN TOMATOES, VENUE, VIDEO WATCHDOG, and SIGHT AND SOUND, and has provided a slew of MONSTER PARTY endorsed commentaries for many of their favorite films. Of course, we're barely scratching the surface of Kim Newman's accomplishments, so for more information about this MONSTER PARTY hero, check out THE KIM NEWMAN WEBSITE at johnnyalucard.com! Oh, and in case you're wondering how MONSTER PARTY came up with the provocative title for this episode, one of Kim's favorite horror films is the classic 70s vampire film, LET'S SCARE JESSICA TO DEATH. So what better way to honor our guest than with a Jessi-centric play on words? Aren't we clever? WE HOPE YOU ENJOY THIS HEARTFELT EXAMINATION OF HORROR FILMS FROM WHAT IS ARGUABLY THE GOLDEN AGE OF CINEMA. AND TO JESSICA'S LOVED ONES, WE OFFER OUR CONDOLENCES.
Andrew Scott is the latest in a long line of actors to play Thomas Ripley - the seductive, sociopathic conman created by American crime writer Patricia Highsmith, and immortalised in films from Plein Soleil to The Talented Mr Ripley. Ellen E Jones and Mark Kermode look at Ripley and other social strivers on screen, asking how these interlopers have insinuated themselves into our hearts and minds.Ellen explores what makes Patricia Highsmith's work so cinematic, with a lifelong Highsmith fan – critic and novelist Kim Newman. And she speaks to Swiss documentary filmmaker Eva Vitija about her 2022 film Loving Highsmith – a fascinating look at the author's life and artistry, told through her unpublished diaries, and interviews with her friends and former lovers.Mark Kermode looks beyond Highsmith's work, to explore how the 'Ripleyesque' figure has endured. He discusses cinema's most notorious interlopers, from The Great Gatsby to Saltburn, with Manuela Lazic, a French critic, writer and filmmaker. Mark also talks to two of his favourite filmmakers, Christine Molloy and Joe Lawlor. Christine and Joe's newest film Baltimore – about the debutante turned IRA member Rose Dugdale – is just one of many stories about interloping and identity that they've brought to the screen over the years. They tell Mark why the theme fascinates them. Producer: Jane Long A Prospect Street production for BBC Radio 4

Forty years on from 1984 and the release of the John Hurt-starring big screen adaptation of George Orwell's novel, Ellen E Jones and Mark Kermode explore dystopian visions from British film and TV. Mark speaks to film critic Kim Newman about the literary roots of the dystopia, from 1984 to A Clockwork Orange. And he talks to actor Brian Cox about how, in a career that has included roles as Dr Hannibal Lecter and Logan Roy, the prophetic 1968 TV play The Year of The Sex Olympics remains one of the projects he is most proud of.Meanwhile, Ellen talks to Ngozi Onwurah, the director of landmark film Welcome II The Terrordome. Released in 1995, the radical British dystopian tale was the first feature directed by a black woman to get a UK cinema release. Ellen and Ngozi discuss why Welcome II The Terrordome was so prescient. And Ellen also speaks to Kibwe Tavares, who co-directed new film The Kitchen, about a dilapidated housing estate in a near-future London, with Get Out star Daniel Kaluuya.Producer: Jane Long A Prospect Street production for BBC Radio 4
Lauren Jane Barnett is a horror writer, horror film fan, podcast host, and occasional horror walking guide living in London. She's been watching horror movies most of her life, and while doing her Ph.D. she hunted around London for a walking tour of the city's horror movies, but couldn't find one. The Long Good Friday elevated the British gangster film to a level not seen for a decade since Get Carter, and sees London gangster Harold Shand (Bob Hoskins) and his girlfriend Victoria (Helen Mirren) embroiled in a scheme to redevelop parts of London's Docklands with finance from a New York mafia boss. The film features some prophetic scenes in which Harold espouses a new future for London, a London at the centre of Europe, with opportunity to create incredible wealth - a wealth he would most likely have made had the IRA not started interfering in his affairs. In this episode of Screenshot, Mark Kermode speaks to Dame Helen Mirren about the changes she made to the script and to her character's role, and also about how her uncle's connections to the London underworld helped her in the part. Mark also talks to tour guide Rob Smith, who leads a tour of the film's locations around London's Docklands. Exploring the world of the British gangster film further, Ellen E Jones meets author Kim Newman who talks us through the changing nature of these films from the 1930s to the present day, and Louis Mellis who, alongside David Scinto, wrote a triptych of British gangster films including 2000's Sexy Beast. Lynda La Plante, creator of the seminal British gangster crime drama Widows, drops in with a Viewing Note in which she makes an offer you can't refuse. TW: child sexual abuse by a parent In "The Witch Who Came from the Sea" (1976), written by Robert Thom and directed by Matt Cimber, Molly (Millie Perkins) confronts her childhood trauma in unsettling and destructive ways. Through flashbacks and conversations with her sister, Cathy (Vanessa Brown), we learn that the sea captain father Molly idolizes was actually an abusive piece of shit. Unable to acknowledge the reality of her childhood, Molly creates a fictional world in her head that begins to splinter when her own violent impulses take form. Based on the poster and the film's video nasty status, I expected something titillating that favors style over substance. Instead, I got a character-driven meditation on the downsides of trying to compartmentalize abuse. Here are some things we mentioned during the episode and/or that we think you should check out: April Wolfe's article in Film Comment Louis Black's overview on writer Robert Thom in The Austin Chronicle Stories about the Boathouse restaurant on the Santa Monica Pier. Sadly, the spot is now a Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. Overview on Peggy Fleury AKA Doris on Corey Parker's blog. It includes several PDFs from print publications that can't be easily found elsewhere. Kim Newman's history of video nasties article in BFI Assorted fun facts that we didn't get to mention: Matt Cimber is the co-creator and director of the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling (GLOW) professional wrestling promotion and syndicated television series (the OG, not the Netflix show). Robert Thom wrote the scripts for four of the most significant and best of the drive-in exploitation movies: 1968's “Wild in the Streets” (Barry Shear), 1970's “Bloody Mama” (Roger Corman), 1975's “Death Race 2000” (Paul Bartel), and 1975's “Crazy Mama” (Jonathan Demme). Young Molly (Verkina Flower) and Molly's dad (George 'Buck' Flower) were played by real life father and daughter. George ‘Buck' Flower was also the casting director and known for playing a lot of drunk/homeless roles. He previously worked with Matt Cimber on “The Candy Tangerine Man” (1975) and had a cameo in almost every ‘80s John Carpenter movie. Verkina Flower went on to act in other drive-in exploitation films but then started working more steadily as a costume designer. Notably, she was a wardrobe supervisor for a few episodes of Nickelodeon's “All That” in the early aughts. The Boathouse restaurant was also featured in “Funny Girl” (1968), “They Shoot Horses, Don't They?” (1969), “The Sting” (1973), “Forrest Gump” (1994) and “The Majestic” (2001).

For our fourth episode, Eric Wier and Alexander Winberg talk about the 1989 horror classic Drachenfels by Kim Newman, of the Anno Dracula fame. We chat about the novel's interesting place in the Old World, and how things have both stayed the same and also changed in the Warhammer world since it was first written. We also talk about its unusual characters and interesting plot structure: a jailed playwright and vampire from Bretonnia creating a dramatization of the defeat of the dreaded Drachenfels.
“I am…Dracula!” This week Mike is joined by Dracula expert and author of the Anno Dracula books Kim Newman to discuss the importance of the character and story on horror cinema. In the second half of the episode Mike is joined by Adam Robinson for a deep-dive discussion of Bram Stoker's seminal 1897 novel. Music by Jack Whitney. On Tuesday, January 11, 1972, KOLCHAK: THE NIGHT STALKER terrified and delighted audiences on ABC. The TV movie — written by horror legend Richard Matheson (I Am Legend) and based on an unpublished novel by Jeff Rice — was the highest-rated TV movie in U.S. history. It subsequently spawned both a second TV movie, THE NIGHT STRANGLER, and a cult TV series that ran for just one season, but inspired a generation of storytellers, notably including X-Files creator Chris Carter. In 2022, Moonstone Books will celebrate this pop culture milestone with a Kickstarter campaign for KOLCHAK: THE NIGHT STALKER 50TH ANNIVERSARY GRAPHIC NOVEL, edited by James Aquilone (Classic Monsters Unleashed). This all-new, 100+ page, full-color graphic novel will feature 10 startling stories chronicling the life of monster-hunting reporter Carl Kolchak. The stories are written by such master storytellers as Rodney Barnes (Killadelphia), Kim Newman (Anno Dracula), Peter David (The Incredible Hulk), and Jonathan Maberry (V-Wars) and illustrated by such amazing artists as Colton Worley (The Shadow), Warwick Johnson-Cadwell (Mr. Higgins Comes Home), J.K. Woodward (Star Trek), and Paul McCaffrey (Anno Dracula). THE NIGHT STALKER 50TH ANNIVERSARY GRAPHIC NOVEL features a cover by Colton Worley, as well a cover by Jerry Ordway (The Power of Shazam!). KOLCHAK: THE NIGHT STALKER 50TH ANNIVERSARY GRAPHIC NOVEL also includes an introduction by Richard Christian Matheson, the bestselling horror author/screenwriter/producer and son of THE NIGHT STRANGLER and THE NIGHT STRANGLER writer Richard Matheson, an essay on the 50th anniversary by Mark Dawidziak, the author of The Nightstalker Companion, and a retrospective of Moonstone Book's Kolchak publication history by publisher Joe Gentile. The KOLCHAK: THE NIGHT STALKER 50TH ANNIVERSARY GRAPHIC NOVEL ANTHOLOGY will be available in limited-edition softcover and hardcover editions, both with variant covers. In addition Moonstone Books is creating a special 40-page standalone comic for the Kickstarter, featuring the story "Satanic Panic '88," written by James Aquilone and illustrated by Colton Worley, featuring a cover by Dan Brereton. “It's been half a century since Carl Kolchak made his first appearance on TV and it seems the fandom for the character is stronger than ever,” said editor James Aquilone. “I wanted to create something very special for the anniversary: a look at the life of my favorite monster hunter, from his childhood to his last case…the ultimate Kolchak story, full of creatures, frights, and the reporter's iconic wit.” "Carl Kolchak is one of the great horror genre characters of the 1970s,” said Kim Newman. “KOLCHAK changed my life,” said Killadelphia writer Rodney Barnes. “The story we're telling brings the character into some wholly unexpected places and it's a genuine thrill to be a part of this incredible anthology.” More contributors will be announced in the coming months. Django Nudo and the Smut Peddler welcome you backwards in preparation for this week's big topic: satan(ism). First there is a quick plug for the last Everyman Cult Tuesday screening of the year, with Christmas special "Silent Night, Deadly Night" (1972) showing on 7 December across UK, introduced by horror guru Kim Newman. There is the Nikkatsu Sueden Porunu films showing in Stockholm. We also welcome The Chilean, our latest edition to the Cultpix Team, who will be helping us with marketing and understanding the mindset of Cultpix members as part of our quest for world domination. Satan, satanism, its portrayal in popular culture and the virulent satanic panic in the US in the 1980s is the main focus of today's episode. We are fortunate to have the knowledgable Carl Abrahamsson in the studio to talk us through all this. Carl is multi-hyphenate: writer, publisher, musician and film-maker, as well as self-confessed satanist. Following on from the films, psychopaths and social changes in the US in the 1970s, we trace the emergence of the satanic panic in Reagan-era US, with hysterical tabloid documentaries such as Geraldo Rivera's "Devil Worship - Exposing Satan's Underground" (1989) that links all kinds of lurid murders and crimes to satanist. Carl makes the point that there was a great deal of projection going on from established religion, covering up its own child abuse scandals at the time. It was easier to blame New Age trends in Mondo-style docus like "The Occult Experience" (1985) or "Devil Worship - the Rise of Satanism" (1989). We discuss the interesting characters in the interview documentary "The First Family of Satanism" (1989) that pitted radio evangelist Bob Larson against Nikolas Schreck and his wife Zeena, daughter of Anton LaVey (founder of the Church of Satan). Larson is almost the more interesting one with his freak-show style call-in radio show, where he vented against satanism, rock music and role playing games, when he wasn't performing exorcisms (sometimes with his daughter!), even over Skype for $295 a pop. Carl then talks us through his own journey out of the closet as a confirmed satanism, which is not so much about worshiping the Devil as a form of radical individualism. His music and particularly the song "Sweet Jayne" about the relationship between Jayne Mansfield and Church of Satan founder Anton LaVey. This led to Carl befriending LaVey and winning his trust, which in turn led to the documentary "Into the Devil's Den" (2019) which features LaVey and several other key figures such as Kenneth Anger. Films like this and "Hail Satan?" (2019), which in the words of The Guardian, "portrays the Satanic Temple as a voice of reason and humanism in the US. Has the time come to rehabilitate the dark lord?"This is an important question, because even though the satanic panic in the US of the 1980s is over - though not before dozens of innocent people went to jail for decades - new and even nuttier conspiracy theories from QAnon are surfacing. We end by playing "Sweet Jayne". Hail the Dark Lord, indeed.
