Travel Infrastructure and Smart Community in Digital Nomad Life, with Joy Taylor

Hi #SmartCommunity friends! This is a bit of a bonus episode of the Smart Community podcast because we are catching up with a former guest but it's a very different conversation than we usually have. So in this episode I have a brilliant chat with Joy Taylor, who you might remember from way back in Episode 154. Joy is a banker turned Coworking Space Founder and Startup Mentor, turned Software Developer and Digital Nomad. So when we last spoke, Joy was the Community Manager of Canvas Coworking space here in Toowoomba, but in this episode we talk about how that's changed as well as why and how she decided to re-train to work in tech. Joy tells us about where she has been travelling as a digital nomad this year, and we discuss the differences between levels of infrastructure compared to levels of community in big cities versus more regional or rural locations. We finish our conversation talking about the power of living by your values, and the importance of providing relevant, timely and easy-to-absorb information for people in order to elicit behaviour change. As always we hope you enjoy listening to this episode as much as we enjoyed making it! I first met Linda McCall when she rode into town on her motorbike and rocked up at Canvas Coworking for a visiting entrepreneur event with a fellow from the USA that she and her partner Mark Philips were escorting around Qld startup communities. Linda and Mark were living a nomadic lifestyle, running their business supporting entrepreneurs and travelling around Australia. As very experienced travellers, having been to over 100 countries, it was no surprise when they decided to start their latest startup Nomad Stays, which is helping digital nomads and remote workers find longer term accommodation options in beautiful hidden parts of the world, as well as helping accommodation providers in these areas to understand the benefits of catering to the longer term guest. Linda and Mark join me today from a very warm south-east of France and share how they have turned their latest idea into reality. Our Startup Lesson today is finding your point of difference.Links mentioned in this episode:LinkedIn: Linda McCall https://www.linkedin.com/in/lindaamccall/LinkedIn: Mark Phillips https://www.linkedin.com/in/imarkphillips/Nomad Stays: https://www.nomadstays.co/FB Group: Digital Nomad Explorers Co https://www.facebook.com/groups/digitalnomadexplorersFB Group: Sandtracks Virtual Coworking https://www.facebook.com/groups/sandtracksBusiness in Barefeet https://www.businessinbarefeet.com/Contact Us:Canvas Coworking https://canvascoworking.com.au/or find us on FB https://www.facebook.com/canvascoworking/Startup Toowoomba https://startuptoowoomba.com.au/or find us on FB https://www.facebook.com/startuptoowoomba/Get in touch with our host, Joy Taylor via LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/joymtaylor/

Today I have the great pleasure of introducing you all to Steph Piper. Steph is the founder of Piper 3D, the resident maker at the USQ Makerspace and one half of the emerging electronic tech kits for girls company, Elkei Education. For the last few years, I have had the opportunity to watch and be a part of Steph's journey of bring the idea behind Elkei Education to life, along with her co-founder Andrea Madden. From the very first pitch at a Startup Weekend I have been excited about seeing the idea evolve, particularly as it aligns so closely with one of my favourite programs here at Canvas Coworking, which is our free kids coding club, called CoderDojo Toowoomba. That is enough from me for now though, let me introduce you to Steph and hear the story from her side. This week's Startup Lesson is all about Minimum Viable Product and why it is so important to think small to start.Links mentioned in this episode:Elkei Education https://www.elkei.com.au/Piper3DP http://www.piper3dp.com/DDPPE.net https://ddppe.net/Startup Weekend https://www.facebook.com/StartupWeekendTwba/Startup Onramp https://canvascoworking.com.au/product/startup-onramp/Lean Canvas https://leanstack.com/leancanvasContact Us:Canvas Coworking https://canvascoworking.com.au/or find us on FB https://www.facebook.com/canvascoworking/Startup Toowoomba https://startuptoowoomba.com.au/or find us on FB https://www.facebook.com/startuptoowoomba/Get in touch with our host, Joy Taylor via LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/joymtaylor/

I am excited to have my first co-founder guests on today's show, Wendy Allen and Helen Reynolds from Stored Naturally. Wendy has been a member of Canvas Coworking from almost the very beginning, with Helen coming along a few years ago. One of the things I love most about being involved with Canvas Coworking, is seeing connections made at our events blossom into something...and it warms my heart to know that Wendy and Helen met at one of our social events. They were also inspiration in the creation of this podcast, as they kept me on task during the Start Your Own Podcast course that we all completed together recently, and their podcast, Gutsy Matters has also launched to the world...all while running their other businesses as wellIn this week's Startup Lesson we extend the thoughts of why start, to how to end. Beginning with the end in mind can help you make decisions that better align with your vision.Links mentioned in this episode:Stored Naturally https://www.storednaturally.com/Gutsy Matters https://pod.link/gutsymatters/Alice Mabin Photographer https://almabin.com/Ask An Expert - Intellectual Property & Trademarks https://canvascoworking.com.au/product/mentor-in-the-house-intellectual-property-trademarks-patents/Contact Us: Canvas Coworking https://canvascoworking.com.au/or find us on FB https://www.facebook.com/canvascoworking/Startup Toowoomba https://startuptoowoomba.com.au/or find us on FB https://www.facebook.com/startuptoowoomba/Get in touch with our host, Joy Taylor via LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/joymtaylor/

I must admit, today was one of my tougher interviews considering how well I know my guest. David Masefield is the founder of shedblog.com.au is also my partner and the President of Canvas Coworking...so it was hard not to add to some of his answers myself. However, we have managed to survive 5 years in business together and this interview, so we are doing okay… David's story is a great one for anyone who has an idea to take their existing bricks and mortar business in a slightly different direction and online…This week's Startup Lesson is all about talking, and why it is important to talk about the problem to learn as much as you can before you start talking about your idea for a solution.Links mentioned in this episode:Shedblog https://shedblog.com.au/Lean Canvas https://leanstack.com/leancanvasContact Us:Canvas Coworking https://canvascoworking.com.au/or find us on FB https://www.facebook.com/canvascoworking/Startup Toowoomba https://startuptoowoomba.com.au/or find us on FB https://www.facebook.com/startuptoowoomba/Get in touch with our host, Joy Taylor via LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/joymtaylor/

We hear from David and Joy Taylor who set up “Canvas Coworking” in a small city in Australia. Their journey began in 2012, when they started by talking to lots of people and hosting coffee-mornings to engage their local community and find out what was needed. After starting with a popup space in a café, they looked for a larger “dual purpose” space which they could set up how they liked, and were able to run workshops and events to test and “prove” the business model. The next step was to find a permanent space they could lease. With volunteer support (including David and Joy volunteering their own time) they managed to set up their full-time home which is now owned and run by the community.David speaks about some of the challenges they’ve faced, including educating people on the difference between coworking and serviced office space, and getting their local council to understand what they were trying to achieve, which didn’t quite match what the council themselves wanted to deliver in the early stages. We also hear abouthow their coworking space has been able to deliver what the community has neededthe opportunities it’s created for coworkers to give backthe challenge of coworkers driving to the coworking space and needing parking, versus using public transportattracting coworkers from outside the citythe successes they’ve had in supporting members to get funding to develop what they’re passionate aboutFinally, we also hear from one of their members, Jinhee, about the journey he’s embarked on as a result of finding David and Joy’s coworking space.Links for this episodeCanvas Coworking https://canvascoworking.com.au
