In this episode I interviewed a Geologist that is championing woman in the resources sector, Molly Stanistreet. Now you may have seen Molly floating around Facebook recently after the Courier Mail wrote an article about her in the lead up to the Women in Mining and Resources Queensland (WIMARQ) Awards for Women in Resources. Though as a typical newspaper, the Courier Mail just honed in on this apparent boys culture in Mining, which Molly can't even really remember saying. So I thought I'd take the opportunity to interview Molly about her career in the Mining industry, what it has done for her and why she is in the running to take out this years WIMARQ resources award for woman. Now Molly's career has been far from spoon fed, where as a graduated Geologist she packed up from the comforts of family and friends in QLD and headed solo to where else but Kalgoorlie to commence her career in the Mining industry. It's a great story and after working with her previously, I can vouch that she brings an amazing family vibe to whatever mine site she works on. She is a very valuable asset not just as a Geologist, but as a great person that lifts the morale of everyone around her. Best of luck with the WIMARQ award Molly.
Sandrine Jourdan vanished from a Queensland property in July 2012. A coroner would eventually rule her death a probable suicide. But her body has never been found, and while most in her life have concluded Sandrine is probably dead, many suspect she may have met with foul play. Among them is retired detective-turned-private investigator Graeme Crowley who's been investigating the case for the Bring Home Sandrine podcast. He joins us today. While spending years styling hair at runway shows, fashion week events, and magazine shoots was an incredibly fun and exciting lifestyle, this mum of four slowly started feeling sick, stressed, and run down. Tenille was told that during three out of four pregnancies she had developed chemical poisoning from being exposed to harsh chemicals over the years in the hair industry. Tenille's experience with chemical poisoning motivated her to follow her heart and build the business on sustainable, eco-friendly and vegan ethos, free from harsh chemicals and nasty ingredients while still creating gorgeous hair. She set up the salon and decked it out with upcycled furniture and plants to give it an elective look and feel. A concept that was very popular with the community and environmentally conscious locals and quickly grew into a seven-figure business with 30 staff and another 3 QLD-based salons in a matter of a couple of years. In addition to this, seven years ago Tenille had to file for bankruptcy after leaving a domestic violence relationship, and this inspired her to set up a hair salon from home to be able to pay off her debts. This small salon in her garage quickly snowballed with people knocking on her door saying that “A little birdie told me you're a hairdresser” and she quickly got busier and managed to open up her first Brisbane-based salon, called Little Birdie Hair Co, in a large warehouse. Tenille is now a spokesperson for sustainability within the hair industry, and she is passionate about the local community and making sure victims of domestic violence are supported in the workplace, being the first hair salon in Australia to work towards getting a White Ribbon Accreditation. We discuss: What parts of hairdressing have the most toxins and how easily can these items be replaced for less toxic options? Please give us some common examples – from hair colour to even the things like the tools you use. How long were you working in hairdressing before your started to feel unwell from being exposed to chemicals? What are some of the short- and longer-term health problems these exposures can create and how prevalent is that these days? Do clients need to be as aware of this when they visit a salon or products we use at home? What are the main challenges to making a hair salon successful in 2022 and how do you tackle these? Where else can the salon sector help protect its people better? Takeaway: What is your final takeaway message for us on The Politics of Salons? This is our light-hearted take on the Bitcoin Bush Bash in Murrurundi, NSW. It was just as expected. A few words that spring to mind: Welcoming. Old friends. New friends. Honest (sometimes brutally). Intellectually Stimulating. Steak. Beers. Art. Proof of Work. Growing. Committed. Humble. Curious. Family. Fun. That was our third and certainly not our last. We'd love to make it to QLD, VIC and WA to attend theirs someday. Let's see. Most importantly. If you haven't yet been to a bush bash and you're wondering whether to come, please do. You'll certainly be made welcome. Better yet, start your own and send us all an invitation. Thank you to all those that didn't want to be thanked! Bitcoin for the win. Episode 15 is all about Reinventing Yourself with John MorrallI originally wanted to interview John about opening and creating a successful passion + lifestyle business – he's the owner Jetts Noosa, our favorite gym where we live in Australia. But when I sat down to have a pre-interview chat with John, I realized there's so much more to John's journey I wanted share. He's led an extraordinary life and is truly a master of reinvention with a unique attitude that has helped him pivot successfully, time after time.So some backstory – from highschool dropout, John created a successful career in hospitality and nightclub industry in Victoria. But after his life was threatened and fearing for the safety of his family, he knew it was time for a change. As a burley biker with earrings, tattoos and a pony tail, he then completely reinvented himself as an entry level salesperson for the music retailer Brashers and worked his way up to state manager for the whole of QLD, winning numerous retailing awards.Living the dream – he toured with the Rolling Stones, bought b-day presents for Celine Dion, travelled with the Brisbane Broncos – but in the midst of living the dream, his marriage broke down and he knew it was time for a significant change. So he left Brashers and bought a Harvey Norman Franchise, moved to Noosa and went from newbie franchise owner to building the most profitable store in Queensland. But while he was working less hours, his lifestyle still hadn't changed – he was still smoking a pack a day, was overweight, on anti-depressents, slept with a sleep apnea machine, and after a heart attack at 44, he knew it he needed a complete lifestyle overhaul. Which led him to the Biggest Loser – applying and getting accepted to Season 3 of the Biggest Loser in Australia, losing 47kg (103 lbs), keeping it off for over 14 years now – and now owning one of the successful gyms in Australia. And the rest I will leave for the interview! What we cover:When to reinvent and how to approach reinvention Listening to input even if it gets your back up, at first!Adapting AND staying true to yourselfWhat it's actually like being on Reality TVHow to use “unfairness” to motivate youTaking risks and backing yourselfReinventing the most important parts of youFinding your True Passion through reinvention I'm looking so forward to introducing John to you. He puts 100% into everything he does, really lives life fully, is present and has a huge heart – all of which you will feel during this interview.
