In November 2022, hospitals across Australia began seeing patients with sudden rigidity, spasms, seizures—and in some cases cardiac arrest—after drinking homemade poppy seed tea. The source? Food-shelf poppy seeds contaminated with extraordinarily high levels of thebaine, an opioid alkaloid that acts nothing like morphine. In this Outbreak episode, host Ryan Feldman, clinical toxicologist and emergency medicine pharmacist, investigates how pharmaceutical-grade, thebaine-rich poppy seeds were mistakenly repackaged into the food supply—and how poison centers, clinicians, labs, and public health teams traced and contained the threat within days. You'll hear firsthand from the experts who responded:Dr. Katherine Isoardi, Emergency Physician, Clinical Toxicologist, Medical Director, Queensland Poisons Information CentreDr. Amanda Holford, Clinical Toxicology Fellow & Emergency Physician, Princess Alexandra HospitalDr. Darren Roberts, Medical Director, NSW Poisons Information Centre; Nephrologist; Clinical PharmacologistTogether, they walk us through the outbreak timeline—from the first ICU cases and puzzling “strychnine-like” neuroexcitation to the multi-state investigation, product recall, and lessons for future foodborne poisonings.Looking for timestamps?A fully timestamped version—so you can jump to any topic—is available to our supporting members.

Join Conor, Jules and Adrian in this “all-aussie” pod as Adrian celebrates his citizenship. No longer a Brit, but an Aussie through and through … as if he wasn't already! Adrian has been revisiting an old favourite and curing himself of the plague in Bristol 1350. Jules has been wooed by a game about picnicking on plaid with ants in the new Bitewing Games title, Gingham. Coincidentally, Conor is also corralling six-legged insects in March of the Ants. The crew also give a rundown on recent game days in all three states, their obsession with Riftbound and Conor chats about a small box hit he's discovered. What does hope look like for you? For some, hope looks like a lottery ticket or a Scratchie. For me, hope looks like McLaren in Formula 1. Bruce McLaren, a Kiwi racing driver, founded McLaren F1 in 1963. I became a fan, being introduced to F1 and the team by the Melvins, who attended the first church I pastored at Enoggera in QLD in the late 90s. That was perfect timing because it also coincided with when they stopped winning constructors' championships. But I lived in hope, and last year and this year McLaren won, and I continue to hope that either Lando Norris or Oscar Piastri will win the driver's championship next weekend. We can find hope in all sorts of places. What gives you hope, and how do you give hope to others?A message by David Toscano.

Australian property investors are selling up in record numbers – and the 2025 PIPA Investor Survey finally reveals why. In this solo episode, Bushy Martin breaks down the truth behind the rental crisis and what it really means for everyday Australians trying to build wealth. Bushy unpacks the biggest shifts in this year’s PIPA survey, including: Record investor exits (16% sold in the last year) and why most of those properties left the rental market. Costs rising 10–40% while 65% of investors are passing on less than 10% to tenants. Major fear triggers like negative gearing reform, CGT changes, land tax hikes and compliance blowouts. State-level pain, with QLD and VIC hit hardest. A surprising silver lining — nearly 60% of investors still believe it’s a good time to buy. He then zooms out to reveal the bigger truth most commentators are missing: You don’t fix a shortage by shrinking the supply. Investor exits mean fewer rentals, higher rents and more pressure on the people who can least afford it. Bushy also shares his foresight on what’s coming next — from the likely intensification of the rental crunch to interest rate expectations and why contrarian investors may quietly win the next cycle. Finally, he gives you his clear GPS for what to do now: Strengthen emotional resilience and think long-term Stress-test your buffers and compliance load Avoid hype, focus on fundamentals and buy where true scarcity exists PIPA Resources This episode draws on insights from the Property Investment Professionals of Australia (PIPA). Over the past few years, the conversation about autonomy in agtech has moved from “but, does it work?” to “how can I get started?” This is a significant shift, indicative of autonomous machinery becoming a fully commercial category in agriculture. In this episode, Matthew Pryor, Founding Partner at Tenacious Ventures, discusses his recent observations at the Gatton Agtech Showcase, in QLD, Australia, highlighting the move towards production-ready autonomous machinery. He discusses how structure is now emerging in the Australian agtech autonomy market, including in sales and distribution, with a mix of companies from established equipment dealers to venture backed scale-ups. Our ligaments, tendons, and overall musculoskeletal system can take a real hit during the menopause transition, making injuries more frequent and recovery slower. Too often, practitioners still overlook common issues like tendinopathies—leaving women to live with unnecessary pain before getting an accurate diagnosis and effective treatment. This week's guest, former pro triathlete and licensed massage therapist Jan Wanklyn, dives into the unique musculoskeletal challenges active menopausal women face, the soft tissue therapies (like ART) and exercise strategies that can help, and why she wishes hormone therapy had been an option back in her day.Jan Wanklyn, LMT, has been a massage therapist for 34 years. She is an Active Release Techniques® (ART) instructor and practitioner (1998–2025) and former professional triathlete with five Ironman wins (Germany, New Zealand ×3, Australia) and two Philadelphia Marathon victories. She holds a Human Movement Studies degree (University of Queensland) and a Graduate Diploma in Teaching, taught PE for eight years, and has coached triathletes online and in person. Jan's clinical toolkit spans Contemporary Medical Acupuncture, K-taping, DNS, SFMA, Smart Tools/IASTM, and extensive wet-lab/cadaver and running biomechanics training. Crystal sits down with Simone (Majority Shareholder) and Brooke (Operations Manager) from Core Refurbishments, a company specializing only in retirement living refurbishments . Simone shares her raw, vulnerable journey from taking over the business to facing imminent closure just 12 months ago, when she was losing "hundreds of thousands of dollars a month" and felt hopeless. They discuss the pivotal moments that turned everything around: the "brave" decision to get builder-specific coaching, firing "dead wood" staff , hiring Brooke as a key operational leader , and finally implementing proper margins. This is a powerful story of resilience, honesty ("the numbers don't lie" ), and the strategic decisions that resulted in a massive shift to profitability, rapid client growth from 1 to 7 , and a major contract to expand interstate.

Vic speaks with Ben and two special guests about their recent papers on ‘outreach simulation', and how they used educational courses on Paediatric resuscitation around rural and regional Qld to understand system challenges faced by these sites. The conversation illustrates the importance of program philosophy, long term relationships and systematic approaches to identifying and following up system challenges. Welcome to the Let's Talk About Real Estate Podcast This week's episode features Carolyn Drane, and we're diving into a topic that doesn't get discussed nearly enough - How to Battle Burnout in Real Estate. Carolyn has been in real estate for most of her life. She's one of those agents who has truly been there and done it all. From owning her own successful business in Queensland for many years to now working with Elders in Victoria, she's experienced the industry from every angle. Licensed in both QLD and VIC, Carolyn also holds a Diploma in Business Management and is well known for her expertise in acreage, lifestyle, and equestrian properties. She has been recognised in the REB Top 50 Women in Real Estate, which speaks volumes about her dedication and success. After decades of being self-employed and constantly running at full speed, Carolyn made a huge change, she moved interstate, joined a new company, and rediscovered how to love real estate again, this time without the burnout. When she's not selling property, she's spending time with her horses, riding through the mountains or along the beach, or helping others through equine-assisted therapy. In This Episode Carolyn shares insights from more than 30 years in real estate. What's changed for the better, what hasn't, and how the industry has evolved. She talks about her experience running her own business, the pressures of being self-employed, and what burnout really looks like for a real estate agent. She opens up about the moment she realised she couldn't keep going at the same pace, the warning signs that she was heading toward burnout, and how stepping away helped her rebuild a healthier relationship with real estate. Carolyn also discusses what helped her recover mentally and emotionally after years of running a high-pressure business and how her perspective has shifted since returning in a different role. Starting Again (With Wisdom) Now working in a corporate role with Elders, Carolyn talks about what that transition has been like after decades of being her own boss. She explains why she says her new environment feels like "stepping back in time," what "back to basics" means in her day-to-day, and what she would do differently if she were starting over in real estate today. Balance, Numbers, and Perspective Outside of work, Carolyn lives a rich life surrounded by her horses and lifestyle properties, and through her work in equine therapy, she helps others find balance too. She shares her advice for agents who feel like they're always "on," why so many agents avoid knowing their numbers, and her thoughts on the difference between perception and reality in real estate. Wisdom for Agents For those who might be teetering on the edge of burnout, Carolyn offers heartfelt advice and wisdom on how to regain control, rediscover joy, and define success on their own terms. She also shares how her definition of success has evolved and what she loves most about real estate today compared to when she first started. Carolyn Drane Elders Bairnsdale

When cookbook author and influencer Sarah’s holiday plans with her 6-year-old were suddenly stamped “unauthorised,” it lit up headlines — and sparked a question every parent asks: Is a week off school really that big a deal? In this episode, Justin and Kylie dive into the tug-of-war between school rules and family priorities. Do term-time holidays harm learning, or can real-life experiences sometimes matter more? You’ll hear the research, the rules (state by state), and the reality for families just trying to make it work. KEY POINTS The viral story that sparked the debate: Sarah’s denied leave mid-flight. Why rules vary wildly depending on your postcode (NSW vs. QLD vs. VIC). What the research really says about missing school — even just a few days. The cost factor: why many families can’t afford school-holiday travel. When family connection, culture, and life experience outweigh the timetable. Practical tips for working with schools to find a middle ground. QUOTE OF THE EPISODE "The real question isn’t about holidays — it’s whether we trust parents to make wise, nuanced decisions for their kids." – Justin Coulson RESOURCES MENTIONED Happy Families Website Connect with us on Instagram & Facebook ACTION STEPS FOR PARENTS Check your state’s rules before booking — policies differ widely. Communicate early and respectfully with your child’s school. Choose timing wisely (avoid early weeks, assessment blocks, or transition times). Weigh family priorities — cost, connection, cultural experiences — alongside school routines. Remember the big picture: One week doesn’t define your child’s education.
