On this episode of Streets of Your Town, we feature someone I've wanted you to meet on this podcast for years. I've written about him for national media outlets such as The New Daily and National Indigenous Radio Service, about his achievements acting as a Barrister on some of the most challenging human rights class actions across Australia. Joshua Creamer is a proud Waanyi and Kalkadoon man, who still sees himself as the boy from Mt Isa. But his role now is Chair of the Truth-telling and Healing Inquiry in Queensland - which has been gathering the history of the state since July 1 this year.He tells us how significant this Inquiry is for Queensland and Australia, and what a privilege it is for him to lead this once in a generation investigation to give Indigenous people a voice in Queensland's history.
Episode 22 and I sit down with Dan M. From growing up in Mt Isa to joining the army as a young fella and deploying to Afghanistan, A white Christmas in a war zone, Discharging and re adjusting to civilian life where joining a sporting club helped him reconnect with some like minded people! Aruma Resources Ltd (ASX: AAJ) managing director Glenn Grayson sits down with Proactive's Jonathan Jackson to discuss high-grade copper assays from the Fiery Creek Copper Project in the Mt Isa copper belt, northwest Queensland. Surface rock chip sampling by previous explorers, including Sumitomo and Anglo American, revealed significant copper grades with highlights such as 36% copper (Sumitomo), 25.4%, 15.2% and 11.2% copper (Anglo American). The Fiery Creek Project encompasses prospects like Fiery Creek, Twilight, Hellfire and Piper and is underexplored but in a geologically favourable area analogous to known copper deposit regions within the Mount Isa Inlier. The project has seen limited historical drilling with anomalous copper results and extensive hematite alteration indicative of a fertile copper system. Anglo American, MIM Holdings (now Glencore), BHP, Rio Tinto and Sumitomo previously held adjacent tenures. Aruma plans to explore for stratiform copper deposits and assess the potential for IOCG (iron oxide copper-gold) mineralisation. Grayson discussed the project's potential, citing the promising historical results and favourable geological context. Following shareholder approval for the acquisition of the Fiery Creek Project on August 1, 2024, Aruma intends to execute a systematic exploration strategy, beginning with mapping and surface sampling, followed by detailed gravity and magnetic surveys. #ProactiveInvestors #ArumaResources #ASX #CopperAssay #FieryCreekProject #MtIsaCopperBelt #Exploration #Sumitomo #AngloAmerican #Mineralisation #CopperDeposits #QueenslandMining #HighGradeCopper #GeologicalSurvey #MiningExploration #StratiformCopper #IOCG #MiningInvestment #HematiteAlteration #RockChipSampling #MineralExploration #invest #investing #investment #investor #stockmarket #stocks #stock #stockmarketnews
Aruma Resources Ltd (ASX:AAJ) managing director Glenn Grayson speaks with Proactive's Jonathan Jackson about the optimism surrounding the company's newly acquired Bortala Copper Project in Queensland's Mt Isa copper belt. An initial review has identified several promising areas for copper-gold mineralisation with these targets found in favourable geological, structural and geophysical settings. Historical exploration at R9 target produced results of up to 1.9 g/t gold in rock chips and various drilling outcomes, including 18 metres at 0.18% copper, 2 metres at 0.25 g/t gold, 4 metres at 0.36% lead and 5 metres at 0.44% zinc. Grayson expressed confidence in the project's potential, particularly around the R9 anomaly. He highlighted the significance of coincident uranium and copper-gold mineralisation, indicating potential for IOCG (iron oxide copper-gold) deposits, which often include valuable minerals like uranium and rare earth elements. The Bortala Project is adjacent to 29Metals' Capricorn Copper Mine, which held a mineral resource estimate of 60.8 million tonnes at 1.8% copper in 2022. Aruma plans to conduct surface sampling and geophysics surveys to refine its upcoming drilling program, expected to commence this year, dependent on exploration results. #ProactiveInvestors #ArumaResources #ASX #CopperProject, #MtIsa, #QueenslandMining, #GoldMineralisation, #BortalaProject, #IOCG, #ExplorationProgram, #Geophysics, #SurfaceSampling, #R9Target, #UraniumMineralisation, #CopperGold, #MineralDeposits, #CapricornCopperMine, #MiningNews, #ResourceEstimation, #GlennGrayson, #ASXAAJ, #MiningExploration #invest #investing #investment #investor #stockmarket #stocks #stock #stockmarketnews
Cooper Metals Ltd (ASX:CPM) managing director Ian Warland joins Proactive to discuss the latest assays from regional reverse circulation (RC) drilling across four copper-gold prospects at its Mt Isa East copper-gold project in Queensland. The results cover all 12 holes drilled in April at the Mafic Sweats South, Mafic Sweats North, Raven and Yarraman prospects. At the latter prospect, about 79 metres of low-grade copper-gold mineralisation point to a fertile faulted contact zone which warrants further exploration. Meanwhile, over at Mafic Sweats South, shallow copper-gold mineralisation has extended to a strike length of around 285 metres and a depth of 200 metres. Drilling intersected disseminated copper sulphides beneath an extensive copper oxide zone. What's more, the company reported all three drill holes at Mafic Sweats South ended in anomalous copper, suggesting a large shallow copper-gold system open along strike and down dip, centred around a regional faulted contact between the Argylla and Magna Lynn Formations. Work also continues at Cooper's Gooroo copper-gold project, just a stone's throw from Silver Lakes Deflector mine in WA. Warland says fieldwork continues across the precious and base metal property and encourages investors to continue watching this space. #ProactiveInvestors #CooperMetals #ASX #CPM #MtIsaEastProject #QueenslandMining #MaficSweatsSouth #YarramanProspect #RCDrilling #MineralAssayResults #CopperSulfides #GoldMineralisation #ExplorationDrilling #Geochemistry #JaniceFault #invest #investing #investment #investor #stockmarket #stocks #stock #stockmarketnews
Cooper Metals Ltd (ASX:CPM) managing director Ian Warland is back in the Proactive studio to recap drilling activities and the explorer's latest quarterly report. Cooper has just completed its third drilling campaign of the year, targeting copper-gold mineralisation across four regional targets at its Mt Isa East project in northwest Queensland. The prospects in question — Raven, Mafic Sweats North, Mafic Sweats South and Yarraman — were together the focus of 12 reverse circulation holes and around 1,800 metres of drilling. Following the campaign, more than 500 one-metre samples were dispatched for analysis to a laboratory in Mt Isa, primarily from the prominent Mafic Sweats South prospect. While a busy exploration season has hampered lab turnaround times, Warland is excited to bring fresh results to the market in the current quarter. Recapping the last three months of activity, the MD highlighted regional drilling endeavours and sampling efforts across the project portfolio. He also called out the Brumby Ridge and Guru targets, where the explorer hopes to be on the ground again in short order. Looking ahead, Warland noted that the company is well funded to keep the momentum going, with A$4.4 million in the bank thanks to a recent capital raise. The company looks forward to delivering more assays, completing regional geochem and mapping programs and building on its portfolio of drilling targets before the end of the financial year. #ProactiveInvestors #CooperMetals #ASX #MtIsaEastProject #CopperGoldProspecting #ReverseCirculationDrilling #MiningExploration #QueenslandMining #MineralExploration #invest #investing #investment #investor #stockmarket #stocks #stock #stockmarketnews

Carol Real and husband Don took up Carodon in 1968, drawing it in a ballot. Originally part of Eulolo, Carodon had very little infrastructure when the Reals moved there, and so they literally had to start from scratch. After 51 years, the Reals sold Carodon in 2019 and moved to Mt Isa. The postcode changed three times while the Reals were at Carodon, receiving their mail orginally from the Gilliat post office (postcode 4830), then from McKinlay post office (postcode 4816) and finally Julia Creek post office (postcode 4823). Carol tells me Carodon was hard work, but a lot of fun at the same time. In this Fearless Singer podcast - we're talking about one of the biggest challenges many of us singers face - performance anxiety. And we have a special guest, Singer, Actor & Entrepreneur Kylie Stephenson, who shares her journey of overcoming it. Kylie is a natural performer but struggled with anxiety and fear blocks, making it difficult to pursue her passion for singing and performing. This led to her taking an extended break from her performing career and singing lessons – she also bravely decided not to continue her tertiary studies in Music. However, with inner work, practice, and passion, she's overcome her fears and is performing again and now fronts a gigging pop band. In this episode, you will hear about some of the challenges Kylie faced as a young creative child, growing up Hyper Sensory in the 90s in Mt Isa, feeling too quirky and sensitive for those around her, and being raised in a sports-obsessed family. Despite this, music programs were available at her school, and Kylie was encouraged to join the concert band, playing the oboe for a year, which she reckons sounded more like a constipated duck.
My guest today is Leigh Neindorf, who has spent almost four decades working in the mining and resources industry in various positions across Mount Isa. Throughout his extensive career, Leigh has witnessed a significant evolution in mining methods at Mount Isa and today he shares his stories and experiences on site from the last 40 years. For the last 17 years, Leigh Neindorf has held the position of Mine Projects Manager at Xstrata Zinc, managing feasibility studies for both underground and surface mines. In this episode, Leigh reflects on his beginnings in the industry and how he progressed through various roles over the course of his career. As a new graduate, Leigh gained first hand experience working on underground mining contracts and was then offered positions in research engineering, copper mine production, construction, supervision and forming work, drilling and blasting and mine planning.Leigh talks about the practical and technical experiences that gave him the skills and exposure to many different types of people. He shares how there was always a new challenge and something to learn in each role, and how this gave him a firm basis for his managerial career. We discuss how a manager must always ensure that good procedures are established and ensure that people understand them, utilise them and know the potential risks if they're not followed. Leigh shares the tragic story of two underground fatalities, both of which could have been avoided if procedures were followed. Leigh also reflects on the changes he has witnessed in the Mt Isa community and what he perceives to be the most significant contributions to the success of the area. You'll also hear Leigh's biggest learnings and challenges over his impressive career and his technical and financial advice to people getting started in the industry.LINKS:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/leighneindorf/?originalSubdomain=au

About this episode Amy Tinning shares just how Branches Performing Arts literally branches out across the outback by bringing dance education to students in regional, rural and remote communities. Along with her fellow teacher Tammy Gordon the pair cover a combined total of 2,000km every fortnight. That is 300 students across seven towns. Hughenden, Richmond, Cloncurry, Julia Creek, Winton, Longreach and Barcaldine. Basically they teach a whopping 84 scheduled classes, and 80 private coaching sessions, to students in the Northern Territory, Outback Queensland and Northern New South Wales. Distance Dance Significantly Amy first began delivering Distance Dance, Branches' online classes, well before Covid forced us all to transition to remote learning. Subsequently Branches' Distance Dance and has been a leader in the way they have supported students and families unable to attend in-person dance classes due to pure logistics. But distance and dance has always gone hand-in-hand for Amy. As a rural kid who begged her parents to let her attend dance classes Amy inevitably sees no geographical barriers when it comes to learning dance. Creating Community Branches Performing Arts is deeply rooted in connecting dance with kids and their communities, and we are in absolute awe of their dedication to helping outback dancers' dreams come true. Indeed that is part of the reason behind Amy branching out with her Co Stars Dance Company based in Mt Isa. In this way Amy and Tammy are able to provide developing young artists with professional level performance experience and exposure to high quality dance training and artistic processes. The team attend comps, perform at various events and are able to experience the magic of performance, Amy's first love. Coffee with Samso Episode 143 Today's mineral exploration story is about Cooper Metals Limited (ASX: CPM) chasing for Copper and Gold. Ian Warland, Cooper's Managing Director, an exploration geologist with more than three decades of experience shares the concepts of the Cooper Metals story. In this episode of Coffee with Samso, I an gives us a good update on what is happening with their Australian projects in Mt Isa East, Queensland and the Gooroo Gold project in Western Australia. The recent interest in the Mt Isa region is set for exploration activities that is slowly taking shape.
It's happened: In late January 2022, an astute veterinarian in Mount Isa diagnosed the first locally acquired case of the tick-borne disease, ehrlichiosis, in a Queensland dog. As predicted the disease is making its way south, and we want to make sure that you, like our Mt Isa vet, are able to spot and treat ehrlichiosis when it comes knocking on your door. Which, in all likelihood - it will, regardless of where you are in the country. This episode is a composite of two episodes that we released over the past two years on the Vet Vault Clinical podcast. Part one was released in 2021 soon after the disease first made its appearance in Western Australia in 2020. We speak to Dr Paolo Pazzi - a medicine specialist from South Africa where ehrlichiosis is an endemic disease and is commonly seen in practice. This episode covers the clinical aspects of the disease and aims to ensure that you don't miss these cases and to give you a guide on how to manage them. In part two we speak to Dr Katy Davis, who works in Karratha in Western Australia where the outbreak started, and Professor Peter Irwin, THE guru in all things vector-borne disease. They give us an update on the situation in Australia, and the message is clear: it's here, it's serious, and it's not quite the same disease in Australia as it is in countries where the disease is endemic. We talk about what you can expect, what to do and how to test when you see your first case, and we clarify some of the confusion around disease prevention. See it as a ‘how-to' guide for Australian vets. Thank you to Elanco Australia for supplying us with the expertise to help us clarify preventatives. I then decided to move to the gold coast to turn professional and give it a go, well that didn't work out the best as I lost my first pro fight and ended up having 7 fights with 4 wins and 3 losses. After that I decided to move back to Townsville and give the game up and have some time away from the sport. After a year and a half I had a good think to myself of what I really wanted and I knew how much more I had to offer the sport of boxing. I moved back to the gold coast and got myself a new trainer and had 7 fights for 6 wins with a Queensland and also Australian title in those wins, I then changed trainers again and had 19 fights with 17 wins winning and defending the Australian title 3 times winning WBF intercontinental title, PABA title 4 times and also the WBF world title 3 times. I then decided I needed a change so I decided to team up with the best boxing trainer in Australia Brendon Smith out in Toowoomba. I now travel out to Toowoomba on a Monday lunchtime and train out there until after my Friday session which is usually about friday lunchtime and then drive back to the gold coast where I live with my family. It is very hard being away from my girls all week hike I am training but iris a complete training camp for me out there an I normally head up about 10-12 weeks before my big fights. It isn't just hard on myself. It also my wife and daughter too but we have a very tight close family bond and we all make it work. What an inspiring episode this was! Alana Kennedy is a Waanyi Kalkatungu woman from North Queensland. Raised by her Non-Indigenous mother in Mt Isa. Alana understood there was something a little different with her family. Knowing her heritage without “knowing” it was something she grew accustomed to. Alana's mother set the standard for work ethic and encouraged the kids to always have a try. With such an amazing example before her, Alana set out to find out more about her culture (oldest living) and the world around her.The visionary origins of Alana's business Orche Sun began in MLM. After years of success, she gradually lost interest in pursuing a “better” life, simply cause. Alana craved something, but didn't know what it was. Another factor leading to the brands inception was Alana's clients who were mainly women complained their husbands stole their products. The Husbands excuse, “well men's products aren't as good”.Fast forward to today. Alana has combined her passion for cosmetics, her love for native botanicals and care for community into the brand known as Orche Sun. Come and listen.

Great to catch up with Queensland’s second oldest active jockey. He’s not long back from a nasty shoulder injury that should have finished his career, but Cyril Small has no intention of stopping. He talks of his ambition to chalk up 50 years as a jockey. Cyril talks of the wonderful support of the trainer who tried to put him on a first up winner at Gatton recently. They ran second. The veteran jockey talks of the simple trackwork accident last October that put him out for 11 months. Cyril talks of his early days in Casino(NSW) and his indentureship to a local trainer. He reflects on his very first win at Casino. He’s never forgotten his first city win and another one shortly afterwards which was the medium of a solid betting plunge. Cyril spent the second half of his apprenticeship in the city with Jim Marshall. Once he moved to town opportunities came from leading trainers. The evergreen jockey pays tribute to his once in a lifetime horse. Cyril won 22 races on the freakish galloper Vo Rogue including 6 Gr 1’s. Several of Vo’s wins in the 80’s and 90’s came in races that were not classified as Gr 1’s in that era. He looks back on some of his most cherished wins on the champion, and tells one funny story about an ice cream vendor who had a penchant for telling fibs. Cyril talks of the retirement home he provided for Vo Rogue when the champion’s racing days were over. He reflects on his association with Vo Rogue’s trainer Vic Rail whose methods could be unconventional at times. Cyril pays a special tribute to his devoted wife Lynlea and the distinguished University degree she attained recently. He praises her ability to train racehorses. He brings us up to date on the progress of sons Braidon and Daniel who work in the racing industry. The jockey looks back on the worst fall of his career in 2002. He suffered multiple injuries in a Gold Coast pile up, but it hasn’t stopped him chasing that elusive 50 year dream. Cyril talks of his great delight when invited to ride out of Queensland. He’d go to the North Pole if they wanted him for an invitation race. He pays tribute to Queensland’s oldest jockey who’s still riding winners at Mt Isa and other meetings in the district. It’s an enjoyable chat with the man who rode to glory on the back of the unforgettable Vo Rogue.
Sarah Holland-Batt's dad Tony was a loving father, her intellectual mentor and her friend. At 18, she became one of his carers. Later she battled an aged care system which let him down in the worst way possible

She was also listed in the 2016, 100 Global Inspirational Women in Mining list. Laura reflects on some of the challenges she has faced being a woman in the mining and resources industry and how she stepped into leadership roles. Whilst the industry has made great progress in the area of diversity, Laura is now working to see more improvement as she develops fundamental policies in HR within BHP and works closely within BHP’s Jasper program. With years of experience across numerous fields, the wisdom and understanding gained throughout Laura’s career are immeasurable. You will hear about Laura’s personal reflections and the principals she has lived by to achieve the success she has obtained in her career and family life.
Interview with Dan Thomas, Managing Director of Hammer Metals Ltd. (ASX:HMX)A story 6 years in the making, Hammer Metals is a copper-gold explorer with assets in Australia: the Mt Isa project, with several copper-gold deposits, and the Broznewing South Gold Project in Western Australia. Bronzewing is the priority right now after Newmont pulled out of a JV at Mt Isa and JOGMEC recently came in to plug the gap.Hammer Metals hasn't accomplished too much yet at the market appears fatigued with the lack of progress. However, Thomas thinks he has a plan to move things forward, which involves leveraging capital more effectively for better drilling and more appealing results, and looking for JV partners. Investors are more amenable to pure gold players right now, rather than copper-gold projects, so Thomas plans to use the company's capital to grow out the Bronzewing gold resource to get gold investors and generalists excited about Hammer Metals once again. This week, I catch up with mum of three, 'Miss Chardy' blogger and podcaster Danielle Doyle!Dan lives on a remote cattle station in the Northern Territory that spans 1.7 million acres, five hours from Mt Isa.With two of her three boys in boarding school, I was really keen to chat with a mum who's 'been there, survived that' with motherhood on the land. She's a breath of fresh air for those of us still in the trenches! This is her story.
Emma and I became friends late last year when we were introduced by a mutual friend. My friend described her as a 'total badass that I think you'd get along with' and she wasn't wrong. Emma has been in QPS for just shy of a decade. She's worked in Mt Isa, Railway squad and has worked in a specialised unit doing covert work. Her career has been extremely interesting. Emma is an awesome chick. She wants women to back themselves and not discount their ability to be a police officer just because they are a female. She takes fitness seriously and she's a very driven and level headed person. Emma also owns Canvast which is a dateless planner and health tracker. We talk about this in the episode however I believe that this planner would be SO beneficial for any applicant. Need accountability and organisation... Canvast has got your back! We’ve got something a little different lined up for you as we’re putting our very own, Brett Cribb in the hot seat. An ex-mining engineer, Brett is the founder of Resources Unearthed, a director of Stratus Financial Group and the host of this podcast. He started his career in Mt Isa and progressed quickly through the ranks to Underground Mine Manager. After some time working in the field, Brett came to realise that his passion was in a different industry. With a keen interest in financial services, Brett took the leap and joined the financial planning community. In previous episodes, Brett has mentioned the “hedgehog theory”, and today he delves into greater detail as to what this means, and how this can be applied to find the career path that will work for you. If you'd like to speak to Brett about your own career journey, you're more than welcome to connect with him on LinkedIn. For more useful tips and resources head to the Resources Unearthed website.
Today we’re sitting down with Matt O’Neill, the Chief Operating Officer of Glencore, North Queensland Assets, based out of Mt Isa. Although Matt grew up in Mt Isa and his father was heavily involved in the resources industry, he had originally been determined not to work in the area himself. However, years later this is exactly where he has ended up. Although originally Matt felt it was necessary to leave the small town, pave his own way, and find opportunities in a bigger city, he discovered upon returning to Mt Isa, that there are very unique benefits from working in a regional area. The opportunities that are available to truly make a difference to the lives of those living in the area are unlike anything Matt experienced throughout his time living in Melbourne as a partner in a consulting firm. Matt reflects on the learnings that he has taken away from this experience, and that when it comes to business, it’s best not to take things personally. Matt touches on some key principles today that have held him in good stead throughout his career. As a leader, he explains how necessary it is to really listen to your employees, and provide quality feedback. Your team need to feel heard and understood, and although you might not agree, you also need to explain why this is the case. Matt also provided some insight into the way his family adjusted from living in a bigger city, to the regional lifestyle and how it has worked out to actually be the best thing for all of them. If you'd like to speak to Matt about your own career journey, you're more than welcome to connect with him on LinkedIn. For more useful tips and resources head to the Resources Unearthed website.

This investigative journo, author and broadcaster has brought stories to light from some of the most remote corners of Australia. From a range of rural towns around Queensland, Amanda Gearing has covered national news for The Australian, The Times in London, ABC Radio National and Crikey. Amanda tells me on this episode of Streets of Your Town - The Journo Project podcast that it all started from a small office in Mt Isa, where her career began. “I think my model of journalism is probably a little different from others. The way I approached it was probably different, probably a bit more intuitive in a lot of ways. I went in very blind dumb and stupid, where angels fear to tread. But I toppled corrupt councils, I had hospitals built, I had roads built, I had public housing upgraded before I turned 22.”

In this episode we are talking all about why it's important to be YOU. To be using your own voice, lessons I have learnt about myself and how you too can find out who you truly are at your core. An 800km stretch of highway runs almost directly west from Townsville, Queensland, before heading through Charters Towers and straight on to Mt Isa. This stretch of road, known as the Flinders and Barkly Highways, has seen more than its fair share of disappearances and deaths over the last 30 years. Locals call it the Townsville Killing Fields. We call it the Highway of Death...**Correction: The Highway of Death runs through the top half of Queensland, not the bottom half.Main Theme music – Kevin MacLeod "Slow Ticking Clock" – Kevin MacLeodUsed under a Creative Commons license.

Joshua Pether is a Perth based dancer, who frequently travels to the East Coast to perform and develop performances. A descendant of the Kalkadoon people, Joshua grew up in in Mt Isa, spending many years living on an enormous cattle station. He started dance at a young age but gave it up as a teenager, shifting gears and training as a pharmacist. However, like any passion, eventually Joshua rediscovered and reconnected with dance later. Joshua also identifies as a dancer with a disability. This has led him to reconsider dance and the ways in which the form can be more inclusive of differences. Increasingly becoming an activist, challenging others preconceptions and proving opportunities for those that are often excluded. I spoke to Joshua after the premiere season of his fascinating solo work Monster, programed as part of Yirramboi Festival. Part dance part live art, this was a dark work that moved between a deeply personal mental state, something that sits below the surface, to an exorcism and release. There is always something refreshing about seeing dance that is prepared to move into the unknown, and deal with dark subject matter.
It was heartwarming to feel service in action recently when I was in Mt Isa.
