Is it sleepy-time yet? Almost. The McFarlands guide The Growing Season into the final stretch of the horticultural season on this week's episode of The Growing Season.Poppies kick off the show and Jack, Lynne and Matt McFarland discuss poppy bloom time and why they don't use many poppies on designs. Hint: think peonies. Why did poppies grow vigorously in Flanders Fields? You'll be surprised to know. An extended version of "Imagine If You Will" takes the listeners back 100 years to find out how homeowners were prepping their flower beds for the winter in 1925. What were the major changes between what was happening then vs. now in fall garden prep? LOTS OF MANUAL LABOUR. Seed saving was fashionable. Matt dives into "root cellars." Weed prevention practices in 1925 will blow your mind. Jumping up 50 years into 1975 changes the rules of fall flowerbed prep. The trio discuss how they used to fall prep clients flower beds 20 years ago vs. what they do now. It's a drastic difference. Do you "rough up" the garden soil before the snow flies? Do you cut the perennials down to the ground? Do you fertilize? Willows are a pain in the bottom. You'll find out why. Should you be doing a heavy prune at this time of the year? There are two schools of thought. Catalytic converters and leaves. Its a thing. The five most common mistakes made during "bed time" are discussed. How do you address those piles of leaves in an efficient manner? Tune in. Looking to book a consult for your property? We'd love to help. CLICK HERE.What is a TGS Tiny Garden? Send us a textThis week on The Fresh Bunch Podcast, we're catching up with the Cash & Carry Crew all about customers, flower picks and costumes. We welcome a couple of very special guests from Rosaprima — Nicholas Chang, VP of Sales & Marketing, and Roberto Maqueo, the new Sales Manager. Fresh off a tour of the brand-new Jet Fresh Facility, Mike brings Rosaprima in for a lively chat full of laughs, insight, and flower talk.Roberto shares how his first days at Rosaprima gave him a whole new perspective on the floral business, while Nicholas sheds light on the company's expanding product assortment — and the challenges of maintaining Rosaprima's signature brand integrity with the Floraprima sister brand. We also dive into the strikes and political tensions in Ecuador, possible tariffs in Colombia, the importance of communication with customers, and the respect owed to Justicia Indígena and the indigenous communities.Of course, it's not all serious — we mix in jokes with Jimi, chat about concerts and travel plans, debate Halloween costumes, and even get nerdy about Levante Anemones(say that in your Harry Potter voice), Poppies, and floral processing tips. It's an episode packed with flowers, fun, and a little fresh perspective. https://www.instagram.com/rosaprimaroseshttps://www.instagram.com/floraprimaofficial/

Send us a message, so we know what you're thinking!Just because you're successful doesn't mean everyone likes you. In fact, success can often draw criticisms that might not be given to other performers. In Australia, we call that the “Tall Poppy Syndrome”, where people look for reasons to bring successful people down! We look at some criticisms (not by us - mainly!), of highly successful artists and try to find a reason for them. This month seems to have a host of rock star deaths! In Knockin' on Heaven's Door, we mourn the passing of David Lynn Thomas of post-punk group Pere Ubu; Drew Zingg, an American blues and soul guitarist, best known for work with Steely Dan and Boz Scaggs; Joey Molland from Badfinger, and Richard Chamberlain, of Dr Kildare, Shōgun & The Thorn Birds. Our “Album You Must Hear before You Die” is Bob Marley and the Wailers' “Catch a Fire”, a landmark album that established reggae as a musical force, influencing such artists as The Clash, The Police, UB40 and Eric Clapton. Since World War I, poppies have been a symbol of remembrance as they flourished in the soil churned up by the fighting and shelling on the Western Front. Soala Wilson has been busy organising the making of 10 thousand felt poppies in Palmerston North. She talks to Mihi about the logistics behind such a precious undertaking.
On this edition of Free City Radio we go to Lithuania and speak with Monica and Noura who work with a project to build the Palestine solidarity movement in the context of Lithuania. The group in Lithuania is called POPPIES, Palestine Action Group, Vilnius. I wanted to highlight this organizing initiative because we often hear about Palestine solidarity organizing within centres of power, protests in Paris, or New York City, but not as much in cities on the edges, in this case on the edge of the EU, in the Baltic context of Lithuania. This conversation was originally recorded in Nov. 2024. This interview program is supported in 2025 by the Social Justice Centre at Concordia University. The music track is Passage by Anarchist Mountains. The graphic is from Justseeds.org and their ongoing Palestine solidarity graphics packages. Pediatric clinicians have obligations to their patients and law enforcement. But it can be challenging to figure out how to navigate situations where these obligations conflict or where there is uncertainty about the right thing to do. This has increased with recent exectuive branch agendas. Dr. Alyssa Burgart is the Associate Director of Pediatric Bioethics at the Stanford Center for Biomedical Ethics, Medical Director of Ethics for the Stanford Medicine Children's Health, and writes about ethics and culture in her substack Poppies & Propofol. She joins Dr. Wolfe to discuss the ethics of interacting with law enforcement, speficially immigration and customs enforcement (ICE).
