East Bay Yesterday
Tales from the pit: Lessons from Berkeley's landfill

East Bay Yesterday

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 7, 2023 60:18

These days the East Bay's waterfront is lined with parks, restored wetlands, marinas, and beaches, but for most of the twentieth century this shoreline was a dirty, dangerous wasteland. Factories stretching from Emeryville to Richmond treated the San Francisco Bay as a garbage bin. The habit of using the Bay as a dump was so common in Berkeley that the city legitimized the practice by creating a massive landfill on its western border in 1923. Beneath the idyllic grassy hills of Cesar Chavez Park and the bird-filled marshes of McLaughlin Eastshore State Seashore lay hidden mountains of trash. The transformation of this area from a leaky dump into a beautiful site for recreation and nature, a controversial process that unfolded over several decades, has been well-documented. Less has been said about the day-to-day activities of the landfill before its closure in 1983. Although the dump was a loud, smelly, wind-blasted environmental hazard, some of the people who worked there still carry fond memories of the place, and several significant Berkeley institutions emerged from friendships that were nurtured in that toxic soil. This episode explores the interconnected stories of folks who remember “the pit” long before it was turned into a park. First, you'll hear from Margie Ellis and her daughter Ruby Quintana, whose family were the unofficial managers of the landfill from the mid-1960s until the early 1980s. Then Martin Borque, executive director of The Ecology Center, and Dan Knapp, co-founder of Urban Ore, will discuss the dump's connection to Berkeley's pioneering recycling movement, as well as a consequential battle over a proposed incinerator. Finally, Katherine Davis and Steve Smith of the recently closed Ohmega Salvage, will explain how lessons learned at the dump informed a lifelong dedication to combatting the wastefulness of contemporary culture. You may have seen the footage from Sunday morning of a Black man pressing Mayor Darrell Steinberg on his racist policies, such as taking $10 million each year from Measure U funding that's supposed to go to underserved communities and giving it to a violent, irresponsible Sacramento police force. That man's name is Conrad Crump, and we were lucky to have the longtime community organizer join us for this episode. This past week has been a long year. So it's fitting that we recorded just as the mayor's 8 p.m. curfew went into place, and as police joined up with 500 National Guard troops to terrorize hundreds of peaceful demonstrators holding a ceremony for George Floyd in Cesar Chavez Park. This is a long episode, but it's one of our best yet. We discuss the events that took place in the week since a white police officer in Minnesota killed George Floyd: How demonstrators took a police precinct from Minneapolis police and burned it to the ground, how Sacramento joined cities across the nation in demonstrations seeking justice, how American police forces showed the world just how violent and craven they are, and how politicians -- particularly Democrats -- failed their communities. In particular, we take a look at Sacramento mayor Darrell Steinberg. He failed when Conrad pressed him in front of reporters on the immoral use of Measure U funding (to the tune of $10 million per year) on the police. He's failed when folks press him on his inability to understand the Black experience, shouting back in a classic display of white fragility, "You don't know me!" And he's failed by bringing in the National Guard and imposing a curfew on a city in grief. We also discuss a lot more within the context of a George Floyd America: White Nonsense Roundup, mainstream media's history of credulity and deference to police forces, and what comes next in the fight to neutralize the Sacramento region's violent police forces. A public art project honoring the thousands of San Diegans who worked in the once-thriving tuna canning industry will be dedicated by the Port of San Diego. “The Cannery Workers Tribute – Parque del Sol,” is located at the southwest corner of Cesar Chavez Parkway and Crosby Road, near Cesar Chavez Park. The site was the location where many workers took a break from the canneries that were housed in what is now the Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding/Continental Maritime property. http://bit.ly/x4nerFrom 1912 to 1986, the property was occupied by tuna canning companies such as Premier Packing Company, International Packing Corporation, Van Camp Packing Company, Westgate Sea Products Company, Hopkins Inc., Westgate-California Foods and Bumble Bee Seafoods. Other nearby canneries included the California Tuna Canning Company and High Seas Tuna Pack Company.

Nearly 900 volunteers helped clean up the San Diego Bay tidelands on August 29, 2009 at the 19th Annual Operation Clean Sweep. Cleanup spots included Pepper Park and Paradise Creek Marsh in National City, Chollas Creek and Cesar Chavez Park in San Diego and in the waters of South San Diego Bay. It’s the only clean up event in San Diego that has military and civilian divers working collaboratively to clean up the bay floor, and the amount of junk they bring to the surface is always astonishing. Volunteers were busy on both the land and in the water.
