One of my goals with this podcast is to help you produce "wins" for your resume so that you can advance your career. When you can do the "right thing" and help those who need it most while also scoring a professional win -- it does not get much better. This is a great, relatively low cost idea that many communities will benefit from. Morgan Massera of Coalinga, California, is a mother of a young child that has difficulty communicating verbally. In this episode, we discuss her personal journey and her efforts to get communication boards installed throughout the parks in her community. Not only do these boards help children like hers, they also help children and individuals who are unable to communicate in the same language interact with each other. She worked closely with the incredible staffers staffers at the City of Coalinga and the Coalinga-Huron Recreation and Park District. This includes former Coalinga city manager, Marissa Trejo, and Mallory Griffith-Wells, general manager for the district. Funding for the project was generously provided by the Coalinga Healthcare District. Seventy-five years ago, a plane crashed outside of Coalinga in California's Central Valley. Twenty-eight of the 32 passengers killed were migrant workers in the Bracero Program, being deported back to Mexico. Unlike the flight's white passengers and crew, whose bodies were sent home to their families, the Mexican citizens were buried unceremoniously in a mass grave, their names omitted from the headstone. Tim Hernandez is working to identify their names, families and stories and he joins us to talk about the importance of remembering. Related link(s): 'All They Will Call You Will Be Deportee': 75 Years Later, Uncovering the Lives of the Braceros Who Died in a Fiery California Plane Crash, The California Report Magazine Guests: Tim Z. Hernandez, author, "All They Will Call You" Mireya Loza, associate professor of history, Georgetown University; author, "Defiant Braceros: How Migrant Workers Fought for Racial, Sexual, and Political Freedom" Michael Rodríguez III, ethnic studies teacher in Santa Ana and great-nephew of María Rodríguez Santana, victim of the plane crash
This year marks the 75th anniversary of one of the worst plane crashes in California history. In 1948, 32 people died when a plane heading from Oakland to the Mexican border landed nose-first into a canyon near the Central Valley town of Coalinga. The passengers were 28 Mexican Braceros who were being deported from California to the border. While the bodies of the white pilot, flight attendants, and immigration agent on board were sent home to their loved ones, the deportees remained unnamed, buried in a mass grave in Fresno. Poet and author Tim Z Hernandez has spent more than a decade trying to piece together what happened in that devastating plane crash. Host Sasha Khokha joined him as he continues to connect with people touched by that 1948 crash. California's changed a lot since that plane wreck back in 1948. But the challenges some immigrants face here can still be overwhelming. And when tragedy strikes, folks who are undocumented can be especially vulnerable. During heavy rainstorms earlier this winter, the streets in the Merced County town of Planada became rivers, hundreds of homes flooded. The whole town was evacuated. Now people in this rural, unincorporated community in the Central Valley are trying to put their lives back together. KQED's Vanessa Rancaño visited Planada and brings us two stories of how residents are struggling to recover after the storm.
A new state-backed report gives the first-ever birds-eye view of California's spending on homelessness programs. The state has shelled out more than $10 billion in the last few years to get people housed. But despite that spending, California still has a long way to go to get people into permanent housing. Reporter: Ben Christopher, CalMatters Despite protests from many community members, construction has resumed to replace fences with two 30-foot walls at Friendship Park, which sits on the US-Mexico border in San Diego County. The historic park on the western-most end of the border has long been a place where families from both sides of the border can meet up. 75 years ago a plane crashed near the Central Valley town of Coalinga, killing everyone on board. The plane carried Mexican migrants on their way to be deported. After the crash, the government sent the bodies of the white pilot, flight attendants and immigration officer home to their families, but interred the Mexican passengers in a mass grave. Officials didn't even release the migrants' names, calling them only “Deportees.” Reporter: Sasha Khokha, The California Report Magazine

Ben Bridwell of Band of Horses catches up with Kyle Meredith to talk about Things Are Great, the band's first album in six years. The South Carolina rocker discusses how the LP “almost killed him” with no touring, a divorce from his wife, writing a breakup record knowing that his kids might listen, and masking the truth with tricky wordplay. Bridwell goes on to speak on his disdain for the California town of Coalinga, how there could be a follow-up EP of leftover songs, and the pile of covers the band has tracked. Listen to Band of Horses' Ben Bridwell discuss Things Are Great, its heavily personal content, and more. You can also watch the full interview via Consequence. Casey and Dan Dalton, sibling co-founders of the socially conscious brands Evidence and Ocean Grown Extracts in Los Angeles, California - partnered with Damian Marley. The team purchased a former private prison facility in Coalinga, California where they manufacture and distribute their cannabis products. Now, they are growing weed at a prison to help those who are in prison for growing weed. Instead of guarding incarcerated people, former prison guards are employed to guard marijuana. Their brand, Evidence, is selling its cannabis products in actual police evidence bags—the intent being to make the consumer aware of and uncomfortable with the injustices around the war on drugs. According to my sources, at least 80 V3 Superchargers will be installed (in addition to the 18 existing stalls) in a new paved parking lot in the truckers rest area, behind the Shell station and Tesla's battery swap area. In a similar setup to Firebaugh, there will be a solar canopy over most or all of the stalls, as well as a battery storage system." "This is a smart location between LA and SF with so many Tesla owners in CA traveling back and forth. What other car company is going all in like this. No half measures." "I am beginning to wonder when Tesla will start to construct their massive supercharger stations more vertically. A 3-4 story ,covered charging facility should be the next standard instead of sprawling mega lots." "For that many v3 superchargers they're going to need about 24megawatts peak. (They can probably shave some peak load if they put a megapack there) That's about what you can fit on a 34.5kv transmission line. The power company will route them a new feeder and have a small substation there (like what is done for large buildings like hospitals or stadiums). 24 MW is a lot of current at the voltage the super charger power electronics would need." TOYOTA MIRAI OWNERS; THERE IS NO FUEL "Toyota Mirai owners are reporting massive hydrogen outages, and Toyota has not said anything about how it will help take care of their promising technology. Here is what we know so far." reports Torque News: "The infrastructure needed to fuel the cars is almost non-existent. To make matters worse, the limited stations are on the fritz stranding Mirai owners who simply want to enjoy their alternative fuel vehicles. " A current look at cafcp.org show 23 pumps offline. In particular, it remains unexplained how the car – which still holds onto its old EMP2 architecture – will go electric. The abovementioned platform only supports plug-in hybrids, but not fully electric cars. Then again. The alleged e-308 model might switch to a different chassis and tech. One possible solution may come in the form of the eVMP chassis Peugeot announced in summer 2020 and scheduled for production in 2023." https://www.formacar.com/en/news/view/34315.html AUDI E-TRON PRICE CUT AND RANGE INCREASE "The Audi e-tron electric SUV was off to a slow start, but it is now gaining momentum in the US with the 2021 model year getting a price cut and range increase. The e-tron, Audi’s first next-generation electric vehicle, already had success in Norway and a few other European markets, but it didn’t sell in significant volume in the US during its first full year of sales." says electrek: "Audi increased the range of the e-tron by 18 miles to 222 miles on a single charge and slashed the price by as much as $9,000. The Audi e-tron now starts at $65,900 before EV incentives in the US. After incentives, the price goes well below $60,000, making it very competitive with a lot of luxury SUVs. The automaker announced today that it delivered 3,474 e-tron electric SUVs in Q1 2021. Audi also delivered 850 e-tron Sportsback." https://electrek.co/2021/04/02/audi-e-tron-electric-suv-gains-momentum-with-price-cut-range-increase/ BYD TO START SELLING IN-VEHICLE BATTERIES TO OTHER COMPANIES "Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD will start selling in-vehicle batteries to other companies as early as the second half of this year, Nikkei has learned. The move comes as BYD seeks to expand the scale of its battery manufacturing business by supplying other companies, instead of simply using the key EV component it produces in its own products, and thereby further boosting production efficiency." says Nikkei.com: "BYD is also seeking to catch up with China's Contemporary Amperex Technology, or CATL, and South Korea's LG Chem, which are both stronger competitors in the battery market. The move marks a significant policy shift for BYD as the company has so far rarely sold in-vehicle batteries to other companies, except for joint ventures with some automakers and for commercial vehicles. BYD is the third-biggest player in the Chinese electric passenger car market in terms of sales volumes, with a share of just over 10%, while it is the fourth-largest player in the world's in-vehicle battery market in terms of production capacity, with a share of just under 10%." https://asia.nikkei.com/Spotlight/Electric-cars-in-China/BYD-to-start-selling-in-vehicle-batteries-to-other-companies INDONESIA SAYS CHINA CONSORTIUM TO INVEST $5 BILLION IN ELECTRIC BATTERY VENTURE A quick bit of battery news from Reuters: "Indonesia’s state-owned enterprises minister said on Friday that a Chinese consortium would invest $5 billion in an electric batteries venture, which would include China’s Contemporary Amperex Technology" https://www.reuters.com/article/us-china-indonesia-ev-idUSKBN2BP0S4 MERCEDES EQS TO SOUND LIKE X-WING FIGHTER "Mercedes-Benz has revealed that its upcoming pure-electric 2021 Mercedes-Benz EQS limousine will be offered with four different soundtracks when it makes its debut in a few weeks’ time. Created by a team of 250 acoustic sound engineers and software programmers led by sound engineer Thomas Kuppers, the EQS needs a dedicated soundtrack because it’s too quiet without any ambient noise." https://www.motoring.com.au/2021-mercedes-eqs-to-sound-like-x-wing-fighter-129180/ 12 THINGS TO LOVE ABOUT THE EQS It’s a hatchback 0.20 drag coefficient 107.8kWh battery 435 miles range Dual motor with 385kW power 0-62mph in 4.3secs, repeatable In house Merc BMS so it can be updated OTA 4 regen modes, 1 pedal driving 200kW charging and regen Fingerprint login, 7 profiles Power/Auto doors Luxury from S-Class, but on a pure EV platform 15th April reveal LYRIQ PRE-PRODUCTION PROTOTYPE SHOWN TESTING "Cadillac Vice President of North America Sales, Service, and Marketing Mahmoud Samara celebrated on LinkedIn about the milestone of pre-production testing of the Cadillac Lyriq now being underway at General Motors' test center in Michigan. The brand's premium, electric crossover goes into production in roughly a year during the first quarter of 2022." says Motor1.com: "GM President of North America Steve Carlisle said that the Lyriq's starting price was under $60,000. This is for the rear-drive model, and we don't know if Super Cruise is a standard feature, which would add to the cost." https://www.motor1.com/news/499015/cadillac-lyriq-pre-production-image/ BOSTON CAR-SHARING SERVICE PUTS LOW-INCOME DRIVERS IN ELECTRIC VEHICLES "A car-sharing program that combines electric vehicles and income-tiered pricing has launched in one of Boston’s busiest and most diverse neighborhoods. The Good2Go service, one of the first of its kind in the country, aims to curb carbon emissions while giving low-income Roxbury residents access to reliable, flexible, and affordable transportation. So far the service has deployed four 2019 Nissan Leafs, and dozens of beta testers are using the cars to commute to work, bring their children to school, and run errands." SAyS eNERGYNEWS.US: "The pricing model is income-tiered so low-income customers pay $5 an hour instead of the standard hourly rate of $10. Participants qualify for the reduced rate if they are enrolled in any of 20 public assistance programs, such as Medicaid or veterans benefits. Program operators made such an expansive eligibility list to make it as simple as possible for low-income residents to qualify. It brings up the elements of the American Jobs Plan that support electric vehicle ownership. Between new electric vehicle charging stations, new transmission lines, more renewable energy capacity, grid resiliency initiatives and more funding for energy storage and clean tech R&D, the American Jobs Plan covers a sprawling web of initiatives that support electric vehicle makers and EV owners" says triplepundit.com: "The charging station network is especially important, because it assures EV owners of access to electricity everywhere they go. In addition, the American Jobs Plan doubles down on Biden’s commitment to support the electric vehicle market through the purchasing power of the federal government. Much attention has focused on the Postal Service fleet of 230,000 vehicles, but the Department of Defense also has the power to move markets. The Department of the Army alone has a fleet of 225,000 vehicles."" QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM What incentive would make the most difference to you buying an EV? In late December, Clementine Sanders called her son at Coalinga State Hospital to make sure he had received her Christmas card. That’s when his bunkmates informed her that her son, 58-year-old Shannon Starr, had died three weeks earlier. “I was just totally shocked,” she says. “Nobody called me.” Since then, she says, none of her messages to staff or reception have been returned. “I still wasn’t notified and I still haven’t heard from the [hospital],” she says. When Sanders and her daughter instead sought out information from the Fresno County Coroner’s Office, they learned that Starr’s body had already been cremated and his ashes disposed of off the coast of San Luis Obispo County. “I’m just numb. I don’t know what to do,” Sanders says. “I’m upset. I don’t know exactly who to be upset with, except for them, and I can’t talk with them.” No one told Sanders that Starr had tested positive for COVID-19. According to the Fresno County Coroner’s Office, Starr’s official causes of death
In the last two weeks, 48 people at the Coalinga State Hospital have contracted Covid-19, according to the Department of State Hospitals. Some patients without legal documentation are asking the state to allow ICE to deport them because they don’t want to get the virus. Andrew Warren, 52, a Vietnamese citizen and resident at the civil confinement facility, says he’s afraid he’ll die at the state hospital due to unsafe practices among the staff that put him at a higher risk of contracting the virus. “They have staff that work in other infected units come in here, then they go into your rooms and start touching things and so they’re passing it around,” Warren says. It’s why he wants to be deported to his home country of Vietnam. But according to his lawyer Martin Zaringer, the state won’t allow it. A California sexually violent predator law requires Waren to get treatment for his mental illness. “And it’s the state essentially saying no we’re not releasing him because he’s not ready to
Residents at Coalinga State Hospital are blaming staff members for infecting patients as reports of COVID-19 related deaths are increasing at the facility. “It’s like they're putting us in a tunnel, pouring gasoline down the tunnel and lighting a match,” resident James Hydrick said. In the past week alone, Hydrick said he’s seen nearly 10 ambulances leave with COVID positive patients in critical condition. And he said it’s due in part to staff floating between quarantine and non-quarantine units. “We even had one staff member who said ‘is this a quarantine unit’ and we said no,” Hydrick said. “[She responded] ‘oh my I’m not supposed to be here, I work on a quarantine unit’ and she wound up working anyway even though she acknowledged she’s not supposed to be here.” The civil confinement facility has reported 275 COVID-19 cases and less than 11 deaths since the start of the pandemic. But residents argue the number of deaths is higher. “Six have died since Thursday,” said resident Andrew
As COVID-19 infections continue to rise throughout the San Joaquin Valley, they’re also ravaging the Valley’s prisons. That’s why two advocacy groups have planned protests this weekend outside prisons in Kings, Fresno and Kern Counties . At Pleasant Valley State Prison in Coalinga, where more than 1,600 incarcerated men have tested positive for COVID-19 since the pandemic began, nearly 1,200 of those infections have been reported in just the last two weeks . It’s the latest in a scourge of congregate living facilities that has already landed two Kings County institutions, Avenal State Prison and the Substance Abuse Treatment Facility and State Prison (SATF) in Corcoran, on a list of the largest outbreaks in the country . Eric Palba, an organizer with the advocacy group Oakland Abolition and Solidarity, says this weekend’s protests demand early releases for some inmates and better living conditions for others. “The purpose is to draw attention to the overall gross mishandling and
