How the Government Acts As a "Substitute Father" with Delano Squires

The Narrative

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 20, 2026 65:06

In this episode of The Narrative, Aaron, David, and Mike unpack how legalized betting is gutting our communities, and why Governor DeWine is calling it the biggest mistake of his career. Ohioans are losing approximately $10,000 every minute to gambling, totaling nearly $5 billion a year. Learn how "predatory" data and AI are being weaponized to hook low-income players and why the "Problem Gaming Network" is being sponsored by the very companies creating the addicts. They also get into the details on the latest attempt by union lobbyists to silence Christian influence in education, and why it’s actually the State (not the Church) that’s overstepping its bounds. After the news, the hosts are joined by Delano Squires from the Heritage Foundation, who steps in to discuss his work on the landmark report, Saving America by Saving the Family. The data is grim: 40 percent of kids are being born out of wedlock, and the Success Sequence is being ignored in favor of State-sponsored dependency. Delano reveals the real-world impact of writing fathers out of the social script and offers a radical, life-affirming blueprint to get back on track. From "Marriage Boot Camps" to incentivizing young couples to build a home, this is the conversation every parent and policymaker needs to hear before the next generation opts out of the family entirely. More about Delano Squires Delano Squires is Director of the Richard and Helen DeVos Center for Human Flourishing, where he focuses on policies and social norms that promote marriage, fatherhood, and healthy families. Squires is the author of the forthcoming book The Vanishing Black Family: How Welfare and Feminism Made Marriage Optional and Children Vulnerable. His writings have been published by Newsweek, National Review, The American Conservative, The Federalist, The New York Post, World, The Institute for Family Studies, Black Enterprise, Blaze Media, Black and Married with Kids, The Root, and The Grio. Before joining Heritage, Squires worked for the District of Columbia government for more than a decade. During that time, he ran a citywide technology program for low-income residents and served in the city’s gun violence prevention office. Squires earned his Bachelor of Science degree in computer engineering from the University of Pittsburgh and a graduate degree in public policy from The George Washington University. He resides in Maryland with his wife and four children.

Welcome to CURE America with Donald T. Eason! Today, we bring you two stellar guests in an enlightening episode focused on empowering communities through agency, family values, and cultural renewal. First, join us for an in-depth interview with Ian Rowe, a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, founder of Vertex Partnership Academies—a virtues-based international baccalaureate high school in the Bronx—and author of *Agency: The Four Point Plan to Overcome the Victimhood Narrative*.   Rowe shares his inspiring personal story from his Jamaican immigrant roots to leading innovative education initiatives, emphasizing the "success sequence"—completing high school, gaining full-time employment, and marrying before having children—as a data-backed pathway (with 97% poverty avoidance) to upward mobility, regardless of race or background. He discusses combating victimhood mindsets in schools, facing pushback from critics like Harvard sociologist Christina Cross who prioritize government interventions over personal choices, and his successes in advocating for success sequence education in states like Ohio and Tennessee.   Then, delve into a compelling speech by Delano Esquire, who traces the historical decline of the Black family since the 1960s, highlighting how welfare policies displaced fathers as providers, feminist movements promoted independence at the expense of partnership, and progressive black church leaders shifted from biblical family teachings to political activism, often influenced by figures like James Cone and events like the Moynihan Report. Esquire calls for urgent revival through child-centered rights, church-led marriage workshops, institutional support from HBCUs and media, and resistance to opposing forces like feminists, LGBT activists, and organizations such as Planned Parenthood, stressing that strong marriages are key to community strength and generational legacy. Join us for this eye-opening conversation on reclaiming agency, restoring family stability, and fostering true community renewal.

Being known for what you don't do can position you as the natural choice in your market.  Today on the More Cheese Less Whiskers podcast, I want to share a great conversation with Paul DeLano from Lake Life Realty, located in southwest Michigan near Notre Dame. Paul and his son Matt have built their business since 2010 around one focused decision. They exclusively work with buyers and sellers of lakefront property. If a home isn't on the lake, they simply refer it to another agent. We talked about how this specialization allows them to really serve their clients at a level generalists can't match, from taking buyers on boat rides before writing offers, to building relationships with everyone in their ecosystem—appraisers, dock installers, marinas, and home service providers. What's really interesting is exploring how they're not just selling real estate transactions, but selling the lake lifestyle itself. They advise families on how to maximize their time at the lake, connect buyers with local marinas during showings, and are building toward a full concierge service for lakefront homeowners. Paul also shared how their direct mail approach to the known, 16,000 lakefront homes in their area has become a real asset, and how selecting a single target market opens up opportunities to become an advocate and market maker for an entire community.  There are lessons here for anyone thinking about the power of focus in their business.   Key Takeaways from This Episode: Why declining business outside your specialty actually generates more referrals and positions you as the obvious expert The 50-transaction mindset: viewing every deal as 50 touchpoints and becoming the easiest customer your vendors work with How being one of the few agents who calls appraisers back generates 2-3 direct referrals per year from an unexpected source Taking buyers on boat rides before writing offers—and why the best side of every lakefront home is the one you can't see from the road The difference between selling transactions and selling a lifestyle, including advising families on how to actually enjoy what they're buying Why true specialization creates a "blue ocean" where committed competitors simply don't exist     Show LInks: ProfitActivatorScore.com BreakthroughDNA.com 90minutebooks.com

Save Marine Air Terminal At LaGuardia

As you read this, we learn that the pioneering Marine Air Terminal (MAT) at LaGuardia Airport, where all scheduled international aviation in New York City took off in 1940, that we as an air cargo publication, if you can believe it, were miraculously lucky enough to save from destruction in 1980, well, the same Marine Air Terminal, i.e. the building that attained Landmark Preservation status, could be in immediate danger of being thoughtlessly altered out of existence by the airport operator The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.     This plan, as we read their presser if enacted, endangers the most historically important commercial aviation structure in The United States of America, dating back to the beginnings of international aviation serving our country's greatest metropolis New York City.     Here is what the presser states, reiterating it twice:     “The plan calls for replacing the 85-year-old Terminal A to meet demand and continued passenger growth while respecting the building rotunda's landmark status.     “A top-to-bottom rebuilding of Terminal A at LaGuardia while preserving the landmark rotunda.”     MAT is comprised of a central circular core of two stories with an attic from which a rectangular entrance pavilion and two symmetrically opposed one-story wings project.     The presser clearly states the plan is to save the central core and erase the rest of the building?     Press Release is clear and dangerous given Port Authority history at MAT since 1948.      We are grateful for the opportunity to remind everyone of what the LaGuardia Airport's operator inflicted upon this pioneering facility in 1952.     During 1940-42, Artist James Brooks as part of the WPA Federal Arts program painted the mural titled “Flight” on the upper walls of the MAT lobby. ‘Flight” at 237.5 circular and 12 feet high was the largest work of the WPA program.      The Port Authority in 1952-3 in that clean-up program painted over and covered the entire mural with drab grey wall paint.     “Flight” remained covered and forgotten, a giant blank wall in a public space and it stayed that way for nearly three decades when, as Air Cargo News, we discovered LaGuardia's Hidden Art Treasure and devised a plan to bring it back.     Now in 2025, it appears, if we read their presser correctly, the Port Authority wants to alter and change the MAT again, this time from the outside, after they had once upon a time, changed it from the inside out when they erased “Flight” from the upper Rotunda walls.      Keeping the entire MAT intact, observation decks and all, as it was built in 1939 is in our view essential, and matters to aviation history for one simple reason; here after World War II the MAT served every international flag airline that launched ongoing scheduled aerial service as the one and only scheduled way in and out of the world's greatest city.     MAT was the USA connection to Europe from 1940 until the opening of Idlewild Airport, (now JFK International) in 1948.     Airlines from around the world serving New York City and thus the United States of America, operated via this tiny art-deco jewel of a building. BOAC (now British Airways/IAG), Air France, Trans World Airlines, SAS (Scandinavian), American Overseas Airways, Pan American and countless others all began their operations here.     Designers of MAT were Delano and Aldrich who also created most of the original LaGuardia Airport that opened in 1939.     Worth noting, a few years prior to their LaGuardia Airport effort Delano and Aldrich designed and built the Pan Am Flying boat base at Dinner Key-Coconut Grove, Florida that opened in 1936.     Today that Dinner Key Building, sister to the MAT at LGA, remains in full use intact, whilst serving the City of Miami as Miami City Hall.

They emphasize the importance of community archives and the interplay between institutional critique and personal narratives, aiming to reclaim and reframe Filipino American history. Their work reconsiders the importance of monuments, Little Manilla(s), The Delano grape strike, and pays homage to the bridge generation who came to find their American dream.  The title of their exhibition, Makibaka, is a rallying cry: fight to live, live to fight, dare to struggle, dare to win. It's a slogan that resistance and protest movements used against the Marcos dictatorship and martial law during the 70s and 80s and has become the regular rallying cry of Filipino activists fighting against oppressive systems, both in the Philippines and abroad.

Today's guest is Ian Schrager, the legendary hotelier, entrepreneur, and cultural pioneer who reshaped nightlife and hospitality as we know it.Ian first made his mark in the 1970s as the co-founder of Studio 54, the iconic New York nightclub that became a symbol of glamour, freedom, and cultural revolution. Alongside his partner Steve Rubell, Ian created an experience that transcended nightlife, merging design, celebrity, and theatricality into something entirely new. After Studio 54, Ian continued to reinvent hospitality. In the 1980s, he launched the Morgans Hotel Group, introducing the world's first “boutique hotel” : a concept that blended art, design, and service in a way that changed the industry forever. At a time when hotels were seen purely as places to sleep, Ian reimagined them as vibrant social hubs, activating lobbies, bars, and restaurants as dynamic public spaces that reflected and contributed to the cultural life of a city. With properties like Morgans, the Royalton, and the Delano, he transformed the hotel from a travel necessity into a cornerstone of the modern urban landscape: a place where design, community, and experience converged. In more recent years, Ian has continued to redefine hospitality with two visionary brands. EDITION Hotels, created in partnership with Marriott International, brings his boutique sensibility to a global stage. With around 22 properties worldwide, from New York and Miami Beach to London, Barcelona, Tokyo, and Dubai, each EDITION is designed as a one-of-a-kind reflection of its city, combining understated luxury, cutting-edge design, and activated social spaces that feel both intimate and electric.By contrast, PUBLIC represents Ian's evolution of the idea: “luxury for all.” Its flagship on New York's Lower East Side, designed by Herzog & de Meuron, reimagines the hotel experience through high style, technology, and inclusivity, featuring self check-in, vibrant communal areas, and nightlife-driven energy at a democratic price point. With plans to expand to West Hollywood and beyond, PUBLIC distills Schrager's decades of innovation into an accessible, modern model for the next generation of travelers.Across every chapter of his career, Ian Schrager has consistently challenged convention, blurring the lines between hospitality, art, and lifestyle, and influencing generations of hoteliers, designers, and creatives along the way.In this episode, Ian reflects on his incredible journey, from Studio 54 to the present, and shares the insights, risks, and instincts that have defined his enduring legacy.A heartfelt thank you to Peoplevine for sponsoring The Stanza podcast this year (and for supporting The Stanza since the beginning). The September 25 edition of the AgNet News Hour featured two guests with deep roots in the Central Valley, both offering powerful perspectives on the challenges — and the future — of California agriculture. Hosts Nick Papagni and Josh McGill first welcomed Mike Harvey, a Bakersfield native whose family once farmed in Delano, and later sat down with Lorenzo Rios, a military veteran and CEO of the Clovis Veterans Memorial District now running for Congress in District 21. Harvey, now the head of the youth-focused nonprofit 5-11, reflected on his family's long history in farming. Regulations, water shortages, and rising labor costs ultimately forced them out of land ownership, a story familiar to many Valley farmers. “We sold that property… it made it cost prohibitive to continue to operate,” Harvey said, pointing to how policies have driven out even well-established farm families. Today, Harvey is channeling his leadership into FFA programs and youth outreach, urging the next generation to carry forward agriculture's values. Harvey also recounted attending the memorial service for Charlie Kirk, calling it one of the most unifying events he's ever witnessed. He stressed the importance of youth leadership, saying groups like FFA, Turning Point USA, and 5-11 give kids the tools to find their voice and future in agriculture and beyond. The program then shifted to Lorenzo Rios, who brought both military and community leadership experience to the conversation. A naturalized citizen and retired Army officer, Rios has spent the last decade helping veterans transition into civilian life. Now, he's seeking a seat in Congress to fight for farmers and small businesses in the Central Valley. “Congress can approve and fund long-delayed projects like Temperance Flat and Sites Reservoirs,” Rios said, calling water storage one of his top priorities. He also pledged to streamline permitting, reform the Endangered Species Act, and push for a farm bill that protects family farms, not foreign corporations. For Rios, agriculture is national security, and he made clear he sees farmers as environmental stewards rather than the problem. Both guests echoed a common message: California agriculture cannot survive without policy changes, water investment, and strong leadership. And both pointed to the Central Valley as the heart of America's food security. “This system I had been turning to for help through all of these years, through the most formative years of life, that I had been assuming existed to take care of me ... was actually a system of control. And I just hadn't seen it for what it was, because I had never said no to it before,” says Laura Delano, author of “Unshrunk: A Story of Psychiatric Treatment Resistance.”For 14 years, Delano was a “professional mental patient,” as she puts it, after being diagnosed with bipolar disorder when she was a teenager. Now she wonders whether the dominant, medicalized approach to mental illness is actually making us as a society sicker.“Sixty-five million American adults and 6 million American children are currently on psychiatric drugs, and there are zero off ramps for getting them off these drugs safely within the mental health industry. Zero,” she says. “This is not about being ‘pro' or ‘anti.' This is about using straightforward, honest language to talk about what these drugs are, to talk about our limits of knowledge around what these drugs are and how they actually affect us, and then to let people make their own decisions from there based on their own life circumstances.”In this episode, we dive into Delano's story and discuss the dangers of relying solely on medical treatments to treat mental health issues and of rapidly withdrawing from psychiatric drugs.Views expressed in this video are opinions of the host and the guest, and do not necessarily reflect the views of The Epoch Times.
