On tonight’s show, I welcome Chad Nicholson, Community Organizer with the Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund (CELDF). Chad has been engaged in community rights work since 2009, initially working with Envision Spokane on a Bill of Rights protecting neighborhoods, workers, and the environment. He then moved on to assist in New England, working with communities in Maine and New Hampshire to protect their environment. He now lives and organizes in Pennsylvania, assisting communities to engage in rights-based organizing on issues ranging from environmental protection to prisoners’ rights.  Chad has been involved with the fight in Pennsylvania townships to pass Home Rule powers to resist the decimation of their communities by the fracking industry. Most notably, Chad’s work in Grant Township, PA has been part of an on-going fight to assert the rights of a community to protect its environment and to extend legal rights to the natural environment. The story of Grant Township is a David and Goliath story - a battle that began more than seven years ago and is scheduled to go before the Pennsylvania Commonwealth Court this summer. The Grant Township battle has only emboldened other PA towns/. Just last month, residents of Clara Township in Potter County, PA voted in support to consider Home Rule powers after Routlette Oil and Gas tried to get a permit for a fracking waste well there. Chad and the CELDF have been on the cutting edge of making a case for the legal rights of the natural world. The fight in Grant Township, PA featured heavily in the recent documentary by Melissa Troutman and Joshua Pribanic, Invisible Hand: The Rights of Nature. Mark Ruffalo was the executive producer for the film.  Resources:  Contact Chad Nicholson: chad@celdf.org, keybase.io/ctnicholson (encrypted) or 207-541-3649 (encrypted through signal.org) Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund: https://celdf.org/ Pennsylvania Community Rights Network: https://www.pacommunityrights.org/ East Run Hellbenders Society FB page: https://www.facebook.com/eastrunhellbenders Grant Township, Indiana County, PA: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Grant%20Township,%20Indiana%20County,%20Pennsylvania/104053069631300/ A special shout out to Jonathan Mann who wrote our intro song, “There Are No People in the Future.” Check out all is great stuff on his YouTube page and follow him on Twitter @songadaymann

Greenpeace USA is working to ask the Democratic party to include environmental action in their party platform- Charlie Jang joins Thom discuss the chances of the Democratic party supporting the ideas behind the Green New Deal and fighting for environmental justice. Who will Biden's VP pick be, and will the Democrats ultimately include Progressives in the halls of power? And a recent study sees the roots of inequality between community governments and corporations in the structure of law established by the supreme court- so how can local communities establish the laws they want without corporations suing them? Chad Nicholson from CELDEF joins Thom to discuss the issue. Are corporate lawsuits stymieing democracy?

Chad Nicholson, Pennsylvania community organizer for the Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund (CELDF) joined to talk about the Trump administration’s efforts to roll back environmental protections, as well as some bright points in the fight to protect local communities and the climate at large. Nicholson and hosts Bob Schlehuber and Jamarl Thomas discussed efforts by California energy giant PG&E to escape responsibility for fires in the state, and the recent victory of a Pennsylvania community over fracking. Jim Carpenter, a member of Progressive Democrats of America’s Milwaukee chapter and a Sanders campaign volunteer, as well as Rick Banks, political director/organizer with Black Leaders Organizing for Communities (BLOC) spoke about what they saw on the ground in Wisconsin yesterday: the political weaponization of a pandemic. People risked their lives to vote in that state, in a situation made even more dangerous for some by inequalities in voting infrastructure. The four discussed that fiasco and the role Milwaukee’s history of segregation plays in enfranchisement, health and a host of other issues. Lee Camp, comedian, activist, journalist, host of the show “Redacted Tonight” on RT America, and author of the recent book, “Bullet Points & Punch Lines” to talk about the whimper the Sanders campaign ended on. In the end, playing nice didn’t help the senator from Vermont make his ideological case or overcome the institutional obstacles placed in his way. They wrangle over what chance there ever was for change in the US’ rotten electoral system, and President Trump’s continued successful deployment of the conman playbook. Then, because it’s Wednesday, we had some UFO stuff, took a jab at To The Stars Academy, were horrified by the grim prospect of rationed medical care in the US and assessed Mike Pence’s sad attempt at boosting esprit de corps.

Season 2, Episode 43 - In Memory of Joshua Casteel (Dec. 1979-Aug. 2012) Tommy and I are honored to present this special episode in memory of the life of Joshua Casteel. Joshua was a classmate of ours at Washington High School in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. We're honored to have Joshua's mother, Kristi Casteel, join us on The Curiosity Hour Podcast to talk to us about her son's life. Joshua Casteel was a United States Army soldier, conscientious objector, writer, playwright, and divinity student. He was born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and raised in Cedar Rapids, Iowa in a Christian Evangelical family to parents Rick and Kristi Casteel. While Joshua displayed early interest and skills in various arenas, including sports, music, theater, writing, and academics he chose to follow in the footsteps of his grandfather and father by attending West Point Military Academy. From his first experience with military life, questions began to surface as to whether he was ‘a fit' for military life and philosophy. After much deliberation, he realized he decided he needed to leave West Point. He enrolled at the University of Iowa and graduated with honors with a multidisciplinary major in Literature and the Arts with an emphasis in Philosophy. After 9-11, he felt he was constrained to fulfill his initial military commitment. He served with the Army's 202nd Defense Battalion as an interrogator at the Abu Ghraib Prison in Iraq, arriving six weeks after revelation of prisoner abuses by US personnel at the prison. After spending six months in Iraq and experiencing the realities of war and violence first hand, all the while struggling with the ethical and theological questions pertaining to his job and identity as a Christian soldier his military career finally came to an end. Years of study, counsel, prayer, and first hand experience ultimately led him to apply for conscientious objector. The Army approved his application and granted him an honorable discharge in 2005. Joshua went on to graduate from the University of Iowa in 2008 with a dual Master of Fine Arts Degree in playwriting and non-fiction writing. He was an active member of Iraq Veterans Against the War and the author of several plays performed in the US and abroad, including Returns and The Interrogation Room. His play will be performed as an opera in the UK in 2018. During the seven years between his return from Iraq and his death, he was featured writer for several magazines and a public speaker on religious and political matters around the world. He was featured in the documentary films Iraq For Sale: War Profiteers and Soldiers of Conscience. Excerpts of Casteel's emails from Iraq were published in Harper's Magazine and in book form by Essay Press, entitled Letters From Abu Ghraib. A second edition was published by Wipf and Stock Publishing in July, 2017. Prior to his death Joshua was at work on his memoir entitled, No Graven Image. He was attending the Divinity School at the University of Chicago at the time of his diagnosis. Before he died he was honored for his work towards justice and peace. Joshua died of lung cancer in New York City in New York Presbyterian Hospital on August 25, 2012. The Joshua Casteel Foundation was formed to carry on his legacy of nonviolence, working towards peace, justice and reconciliation in the world in ways that respect and honor the value of human life.
