Throughout conversations on Cultural Mixtapes, Ryan's work came up several times as I examined the zeitgeist of creative and cultural production with several writers. I first came across his work as he started publishing this hybrid piece of poetry, history, and literary historiography in sections, in various literary magazines around the world, and I'd hunt them down whenever they'd drop from the various corners of the internet. I was intrigued, and baffled at the fact that he was able to create robust arguments about the trends of poetic production, within a structure of blank verse iambic pentameter. Ryan is a very prolific literary critic who has published pieces on fiction, poetry, non fiction, and other genres of art in storied magazines around the world. He is also the author of the novel The Zero and the One, and the forthcoming book of essays Ringbahn, a psychogeographic exploration of his adopted home-city, Berlin. We touch on his other work, but this conversation centered upon his latest work, Context Collapse. The book's argument teases out ideas that are commonly not regarded in the study of literature: He places poetic works in conversation with media theory to elucidate how the environments of capitalism, and technological evolution influenced the works, and in several instances, helped bring them into existence. It's funny, the line of poetry that is always running through my mind is from W.H. Auden's “In Memory of W.B. Yeats”: “Poetry makes nothing happen.” The various meanings and wit behind that line have been interrogated in english classes around the world, so I'm not going to do that here; but in a time when poetry and literature seem to be the last thing in everyone's minds, I wanted to give it some time; and what came of this conversation were some pleasantly surprising arguments that reaffirm what literature can do; and cements its place an art form of the now, and constantly articulating the core ideas and sentiments of the present. On a cold spring day in May 1982, two friends, Ann Lee and Margaret Johnson, set off for what would be their final dogwalk together around a familiar area of common land to them in the town of Aldershot, in Hampshire.Their final walk, because during it, Ann and Margaret met a crazed killer.Yet, within hours of the murder, had their killer called police and given his name and address? And when this wasn't acted upon, had he then called again just over a year later, to confess to the killings?I'll tell you, in the first of a two part story. The episode contains details and descriptions of crimes and events, including descriptions of injury detail, that some listeners may find disturbing or distressing, so discretion is advised whilst listening in. He was born in 1926 and lived to be just 98 years old, having played in public well into his 80s. Donaldson was an alto saxophonist who began his career as a disciple of Charlie Parker, with whom he played, but, as part of the group of young players recruited to Blue Note Records in the 1950s he developed a more soulful sound. In the hour-long tribute to his music, we sample that great era of jazz, “Hard Bop” in which Donaldson was so important. The annual U.R. Ananthamurthy Memorial Lecture, 2024, hosted by Bahuvachana, Rujuvathu, and BIC, features Prof. Harish Trivedi delivering a talk titled How (Not) to Write the History of Indian Literature. The talk will explore the challenges that complicate any effort to write a history of Indian literature. It will self-reflexively examine several such histories, including a recent volume, Indian Literary Historiography (published by the Sahitya Akademi, 2024). Prof. Trivedi will propose some radical ideas for writing a popular history of Indian literature in about 250 pages. The lecture will also discuss a short history authored by the speaker, which deliberately sets aside pedantic conventions. In this episode of BIC Talks, Harish Trivedi delivers a talk. This is an excerpt from a conversation that took place in the BIC premises in December 2024. Subscribe to the BIC Talks Podcast on your favorite podcast app! In this soulful episode of Dem Vinyl Boyz, we dive into The Allman Brothers Band’s sophomore album, Idlewild South, released in 1970. Widely regarded as one of the greatest Southern rock albums of all time, Idlewild South solidified the band’s reputation for blending blues, rock, and jazz into a sound that was entirely their own. Produced by the legendary Tom Dowd, this album features standout tracks like "Midnight Rider," "Revival," and "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed." Each song showcases the band's incredible musicianship, from Duane Allman’s mesmerizing slide guitar to Gregg Allman’s soulful vocals and poetic songwriting. With its mix of emotional ballads and high-energy jams, Idlewild South set the stage for the band’s meteoric rise in the early 70s. Throughout this episode, we’ll explore the stories behind the songs, the creative process during the recording at Capricorn Studios, and the album’s lasting impact on Southern rock and American music. We’ll also discuss how Idlewild South became a crucial stepping stone for the band as they prepared for their iconic live album, At Fillmore East. Abu Abraham's career as a cartoonist, columnist and artist spanned over 50 years, from the late 1940s to the early 2000s, during which his work appeared in a range of newspapers and magazines in India and the UK. Throughout this period of significant political change and upheaval, he critically responded to the political landscape, producing a rich and complex oeuvre that reflects these shifts. The centenary exhibition, “Abu's World,” brought together, for the first time, the breadth of Abu Abraham's work as a cartoonist and journalist across six decades. Through Abu's political cartoons, drawings, caricatures, and writings from the late 1940s until his passing in 2002, viewers can journey through a lively political history of India and the world. In this episode of BIC Talks, a panel of cartoonists, journalists, and a historian will explore the impact and significance of Abu Abraham's work in their respective fields and its relevance in contemporary times. This is an excerpt from a conversation that took place in the BIC premises in August 2024. Subscribe to the BIC Talks Podcast on your favorite podcast app! Find any powerful story in Scripture—then look closely. Past the obvious. Behind the headliners. You will likely read about a woman or man, perhaps a servant or onlooker, who contributes a line, a word, or a gesture. The servant girl who offers a word of advice to a king. A face in the crowd that sparks a ministry. Those secondary stories that represent the minor key in the symphony. Every one of them important. In this series, we will consider the unsung, unnoticed, often unnamed characters in scripture without whose contribution the music may never have been heard. The sermon today is titled "In Memory of These Women." It is the fourth and final installment in our series "Supporting Cast: Minor Characters, Major Lessons." The Scripture reading is from Mark 14:3-9 (NIV). Originally preached at the West Side Church of Christ (Searcy, AR) on August 11, 2024. All lessons fit under one of 5 broad categories: Begin, Discover, Grow, Learn, and Serve. Lingthusiasm - A podcast that's enthusiastic about linguistics
When you order a kebab and they ask you if you want everything on it, you might say yes. But you'd probably still be surprised if it came with say, chocolate, let alone a bicycle...even though chocolate and bicycles are technically part of "everything". That's because words like "everything" and "all" really mean something more like "everything typical in this situation". Or in linguistic terms, we say that their scope is ambiguous without context. In this episode, your hosts Lauren Gawne and Gretchen McCulloch get enthusiastic about how we can think about ambiguity of meaning in terms of scope. We talk about how humour often relies on scope ambiguity, such as a cake with "Happy Birthday in red text" written on it (quotation scope ambiguity) and the viral bench plaque "In Memory of Nicole Campbell, who never saw a dog and didn't smile" (negation scope ambiguity). We also talk about how linguists collect fun examples of ambiguity going about their everyday lives, how gesture and intonation allow us to disambiguate most of the time, and using several scopes in one sentence for double plus ambiguity fun. Read the transcript here: https://lingthusiasm.com/post/748141442230272000/transcript-episode-91-scope Announcements: In this month's bonus episode we get enthusiastic about the forms that our thoughts take inside our heads! We talk about an academic paper from 2008 called "The phenomena of inner experience", and how their results differ from the 2023 Lingthusiasm listener survey questions on your mental pictures and inner voices. We also talk about more unnerving methodologies, like temporarily paralyzing people and then scanning their brains to see if the inner voice sections still light up (they do!).
