He's Greg "Cowboy" Casteel. I met Greg earlier this year and instantly knew there was more to the story of a cowboy opening a unique barber shop just outside the East Gate of Hot Springs Village. At the beginning of HSV Inside Out, we recorded conversations with people involved in building Hot Springs Village. Capturing their stories was important to record the history of HSV and their history related to this place we love. Hot Springs Village is full of characters with unique experiences. I've met people from all walks of life in the past few years. Cowboy is the first in-depth conversation to showcase how diverse and interesting people are inside Hot Springs Village. Expect more in the future. Greg became "Cowboy" when he was 13 and met his first professional bull rider. Within a few days, he was aboard his first bull. He's been riding bulls ever since. Today, he's a record-setting bull riding champion. And he's not finished yet. Next year, he'll aim to set a new record at 63 years old. He also owns Cowboy's Country Club Private Barber Club, next door to Renaissance Homes' corporate office, just outside the East Gate. You can call them at (501) 226-7793. I hope you enjoy his story. About Lynn Lynn Casteel Harper is an essayist, minister, and chaplain. Her debut book, On Vanishing: Mortality, Dementia, and What It Means to Disappear (Catapult, 2020), was named a New York Times Book Review Editors' Choice and a Chautauqua Literary and Scientific Circle selection for 2021. On Vanishing appeared on the Gold Foundation's 2021 Reading List for Compassionate Clinicians.  Lynn's essays and interviews have appeared in Kenyon Review Online, Salon, The Paris Review, North American Review, The Christian Science Monitor, NPR's Think, The Sun Magazine, and elsewhere. She is a Barbara Deming Memorial Fund grant recipient and the winner of the 2017 Orison Anthology Award in Nonfiction. A graduate of Wake Forest University Divinity School and Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital's chaplain residency program, Lynn has served as the Minister of Older Adults at The Riverside Church in the City of New York and as a nursing home chaplain. Lynn lives and writes in Bridgeport, Connecticut, where she is the pastor of Olivet Congregational Church UCC. Key Takeaways On Vanishing: Mortality, Dementia, and What It Means to Disappear explores why those of us who don't have dementia are vanishing from those who do, and why dementia brings up so much fear and dread. The larger culture and educational system assume people living with dementia are not only diminished in capacity, but in their essential selves. Their humanity fades away. We internalize the idea that to be loved, we need to approach perfection. Releasing that allows for more fun and creativity.

Last month we ran an interview with the Oregon based regenerative wine maker Mimi Casteel about fixing America one sip at a time. In addition, we recorded a KEEN ON America segment with Casteel about her life-long love affair with the American land. Filmed at her family's beautiful Hope Well Winery, Casteel spoke with an infectious passion about the natural beauty of America. However you think about the current state of the United States, you'll be inspired by Mimi Casteel's faith in the regenerative quality of American nature and its land. Strongly recommended. Mimi Casteel is the daughter of Ted Casteel and Pat Dudley, co-founders of Bethel Heights Vineyard. Growing up working in the vineyard and winery, Mimi gained such an appreciation for the industry that she promptly left home after high school. Armed with a BA in History and Classics from Tulane University, Mimi spent the next year working in various National Forests across the west. Her adventures fueled her passion for studying botany, forestry, and ecology. Mimi earned her MS from Oregon State University in Forest Science, and spent the next several years working as a botanist and ecologist for the Forest Service, living in the backcountry. She could never get past the longing for the vineyard, and working with the vines. Mimi returned to Bethel Heights in 2005, along with her cousin and childhood best friend Ben to take the helm as second generation winegrowers and owners. In 2015 Mimi left Bethel Heights and began her Hope Well journey, building an island of biodiversity and resilience on her own 80-acre farm, growing grapes for others to support the farm, and making wines to give a voice to the process of regeneration. Firmly convinced that moving from conventional to regenerative agriculture on working lands is the most powerful tool humanity has to reverse climate change, the mission of Hope Well has been to help spread the word by example, one farm at a time. 2020 changed everything. In 2020 the climate delivered a clear personal message that there is no time left for a one-farm-at-a-time strategy to address the climate crisis. In 2021 Mimi made the hard decision to move Hope Well, the wine, the sheep, the chickens, the children, the philosophy, the entire ethos, to a much smaller, integrated farm that allows for the time and personal capacity to do the work that needs to be done now, building strategies and networks that can transform agriculture on a global scale while there is still time.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. In addition to presenting KEEN ON, he is the host of the long-running How To Fix Democracy show. He is also the author of four prescient books about digital technology: CULT OF THE AMATEUR, DIGITAL VERTIGO, THE INTERNET IS NOT THE ANSWER and HOW TO FIX THE FUTURE. Last month, we were in western Virginia talking to the pioneering regenerative farmer Joel Salatin about how American can fix itself one bite at a time. Today we are on the other coast, in western Oregon, talking to another regenerative farmer, Mimi Casteel. In contrast with Salatin's Polyface Farm, Casteel's beautiful Hope Well vineyard focuses on the production of wine. And yet, as Casteel explains, she and Salatin share a faith in the regenerative role of the soil in reinventing American agriculture. This is the first part of a two part conversation with Casteel. Next week, in a KEEN ON America interview, she talks more expansively about her love of American nature and her responsibility, as a citizen, to pass it on to future generations of Americans. Mimi is the daughter of Ted Casteel and Pat Dudley, co-founders of Bethel Heights Vineyard. Growing up working in the vineyard and winery, Mimi gained such an appreciation for the industry that she promptly left home after high school. On this week's program, your host, Justin Mog, puts on his overalls for a chat with Purdue University professor of agronomy, Laura Bowling. Laura is the hydrologist working in collaboration with others at Purdue's Agronomy Center for Research and Education (ACRE) (https://ag.purdue.edu/department/agry/acre/index.html). The team is addressing an issue that Midwestern farmers are increasingly facing with climate chaos: drought tolerance. Adequate rainfall has spared most of the Midwest from drought conditions (https://www.drought.gov/) so far this summer. However, in the future, farmers must be prepared, placing an importance on tools that manage dry periods throughout the growing season. Purdue's Drainage Water Recycling project (https://transformingdrainage.org/), based at (ACRE), works to capture drainage water to prevent downstream flow and redirect it back to fields during drier conditions later in the growing season. Through drip irrigation–lines that run directly beneath crop rows–water and fertilizers are placed precisely as needed. Laura Bowling, professor of agronomy, estimates that the program will reduce nitrate going downstream by 30-40%. While Shaun Casteel, professor of agronomy, notes that soybean production has increased around four to six bushels since the project's beginning. This collaboration has resulted in major developments for the reutilization of runoff, the moisture stability of corn and an increase in crop production.
