128: You Owe It to Yourself to Try: Training for a Marathon She Almost Didn't Start w/ Alyssa Newman

My First Marathon

Alyssa didn't grow up as a runner. After graduating college in 2023, she found herself with free time and a Planet Fitness membership, and slowly worked her way from the weight machines to the treadmill to a half marathon finish line. A run club and a few convincing friends later, she was signed up for her first marathon, telling herself that if she'd already done 13.1, she might as well see what 26.2 felt like. She put in 25 weeks of training, ran up to 20 miles in the Florida heat, and showed up to Space Coast race morning with her stomach in knots. The nerves won that day, and she dropped to the half. But she drove home knowing she hadn't given herself a real shot, and that feeling stuck with her. So she found a race two weeks out with no half option to fall back on, toed that start line, and run-walked her way through every loop until she crossed the finish line a marathoner. This episode is a lesson that sometimes the race you were meant to run isn't the one you originally signed up for.Follow along with Alyssa: @alyssasrunsFollow along with the show:

From the first note of the national anthem to the final word on the 2028 Democrat clown car, the Marc Cox Morning Show delivered four hours of truth, fire, and conservative common sense that no other show in St. Louis will give you. The show opened with a moving Memorial Day tribute that reminded every listener why freedom isn't free — and called out the Americans, the media figures, and yes, even a sitting mayor who chose to dishonor the day. Marc dismantled Megyn Kelly's claim that MAGA is dead with a scoreboard that says otherwise, while Lt. Col. William Swenson put a CBS anchor in her place with the most patriotic answer in recent memory. Kim on a Whim exposed a radical New York school discipline bill and dropped a bombshell update — the man in Planet Fitness's women's locker room was a registered child sex offender. John Lamping broke down Missouri's ballot bombshell, Andy Baker made the case for Amendment 4, and Sgt. Betsy Brantner-Smith connected the dots between defunded police, teen takeovers, and a generation nobody taught to respect the law. Todd Piro weighed in on Iran, Jackson Dart's bold Trump introduction, and why sports and politics make uneasy bedfellows. And Christian foster parents Shane and Jennifer DeGros proved that faith still wins in America — if you're willing to fight for it. This was the Marc Cox Morning Show at its very best — and we'll be back Wednesday at 5. During “Kim on a Whim,” Kim and Marc unload on Planet Fitness after a New Hampshire woman claimed her gym membership was canceled for reporting a biological male inside the women's locker room. Kim details how the woman allegedly raised safety concerns after seeing a transgender-identifying individual in the shower area, only to later receive notice that her membership had been terminated for violating the company's non-discrimination policy. The conversation expands into broader frustration over transgender locker room policies at gyms, schools, and organizations like the YMCA, with Marc arguing corporations fear discrimination lawsuits more than backlash from regular customers. Kim questions why accommodations for a small percentage of the population should override the comfort and privacy concerns of women and young girls, while both hosts criticize school administrators and businesses for, in their view, punishing people who object rather than addressing the underlying conflict. The segment closes with debate over whether public pushback, lawsuits, or organized protest is the only way these policies will change. The discussion moves into a “Kim on a Whim” segment centered on Planet Fitness, where a woman claims her membership was canceled after reporting a transgender-identifying individual in the women's locker room, fueling a broader argument over corporate gender policies, liability fears, and women's safety in shared facilities. The hour escalates further into a political rhetoric debate after a viral video of an Atlanta activist calling for laws that could justify executing political opponents under expanded terrorism statutes, prompting concerns about rising extremism and normalization of violent language in politics. The hour then pivots into a heated “Kim on a Whim” discussion centered on a Planet Fitness controversy tied to gender policy disputes in locker rooms, followed by commentary on a viral claim of extremist rhetoric in political spaces and growing concerns about normalization of political violence and institutional bias. Hour 2 shifts to Missouri-focused legal and political developments, including scrutiny of St. Louis County Executive Sam Page and questions around alleged employment conflicts and prosecutorial recusal. National issues follow, including Medicaid fraud concerns, immigration enforcement debates, and renewed COVID-era accountability discussions tied to Fauci testimony and origin narratives. The hour closes with a sports-heavy segment covering Cardinals roster outlook, Mizzou updates, and regional sports developments including soccer and PGA Championship storylines. The hour also covers sports injuries and roster updates before closing with a discussion on AI privacy after on-air “unhinged bio” prompts reveal how much personal data can be inferred from digital behavior. Hour 4 opens with anticipation of major Supreme Court rulings expected to drop during the broadcast window, setting up potential national legal impacts. The Griff Jenkins segment highlights a National Law Enforcement Officers Day event where no Democratic lawmakers were observed in attendance, fueling debate over political polarization around policing. Welcome to the latest episode of LIFTS, your bite-sized dose of the latest fitness industry trends and stories. In this episode, hosts Matthew Januszek and Mohammed Iqbal explore one of the most overlooked drivers of growth in the fitness industry: member frequency. Joined by JJ Creegan, Principal at Creegan Co., the conversation dives into why many gyms plateau despite strong demand and continued industry growth. While headlines suggest the fitness industry is thriving, with rising revenues and participation, a deeper issue is emerging beneath the surface. Many operators are still focused on acquisition and utilisation, while overlooking the single metric that ultimately determines long-term success: whether members consistently show up. Drawing on experience from brands such as Planet Fitness, Orangetheory Fitness, and Purpose Brands, JJ shares a practical framework for understanding where businesses break down as they scale. From reliance on "founder energy" to fragmented systems and inconsistent execution, the discussion highlights why early success can often mask deeper operational fragility. The conversation also explores how operators can better understand their lead funnels, improve execution across teams, and build systems that drive behaviour, not just short-term results. JJ introduces his "SCREAM" framework as a way to evaluate business health across systems, culture, relationships, execution, action, and management. As the episode develops, the panel reinforces a critical insight: growth is no longer just about getting more members through the door. It's about ensuring they stay engaged, build consistent habits, and remain active within your ecosystem. For operators, founders, and investors, this episode provides valuable insight into the shifting dynamics of the industry, including the "disappearing middle," changing consumer behaviour, and the increasing importance of retention in a more competitive landscape. In this episode, we cover: Why frequency of visit is the most important metric in fitness The hidden gaps in the lead funnel (book, show, close) Why "founder energy" doesn't scale The SCREAM framework for building stronger operations The "disappearing middle" of the fitness market How consumer behaviour is shifting towards performance and data Why retention is becoming harder—and more important than ever

Whether you're interested in entrepreneurship, fitness, or learning what it takes to build a genuine community, this episode promises valuable insights from the frontlines of gym innovation. When Saxby opines on the truth about some franchise ownership situations, he pulls no punches. "One, they're often hyper-unaffordable for the regular person, you need like an investment group. Two, they're not really a gym. Their job is marketing. Their job is reselling you equipment every three to five years at full market while they're getting it for a lot less. That was something that we would never sign, my wife and I." Key themes discussed Building community-centric gyms over traditional gym models Challenges and lessons in franchising and selective growth Differentiating W.O.L.F gyms from competitors on amenities and size Importance of grassroots, local marketing and B2B partnerships Flexible pricing structure based on regional real estate Franchisee empowerment and fit for the W.O.L.F brand Upgrading tech and CRM systems for scaling operations A Few Key Takeaways 1.Community First, Gym Second: Tony emphasized that the W.O.L.F franchise is focused on building genuine community connections before building gyms. They prioritize engaging in grassroots efforts, fostering relationships with local businesses, and hosting regular open houses to embed themselves in neighborhoods. 14:09 2. Unique Franchise Approach and Accessibility: Unlike many fitness franchises, W.O.L.F aims for affordability and accessibility for regular individuals, not just large investment groups. Saxby's goal is to find "100 cool people" to run gyms defined by core values like honor, integrity, community, and commitment, rather than simply expanding numbers. 04:16 3. Selective Franchise Growth: Tony also talked about the hard lessons learned from early franchise expansion, admitting that saying yes to everyone led to some early failures. The brand has since become highly selective, investing in vetting and strong systems to ensure only the right people join. 05:19 4. Differentiation in the Market: W.O.L.F distinguishes itself from brands like Planet Fitness and Crunch not by undercutting prices, but by capping memberships for a better member experience, offering premium amenities (like red light therapy, cold plunge, and soon hyperbaric chambers), and (wisely!) resisting the race to the bottom on pricing.   5. Adaptability and Member Loyalty: The story came full circle with Saxby sharing examples of strong member loyalty, such as community support during COVID and gratitude over continual gym improvements. These reinforce W.O.L.F's commitment to being more than just a gym. It's very much a valued piece of members' daily lives. 21:54 Resources:  Tony Saxby: https://www.linkedin.com/in/tony-saxby-b120982a3  W.O.L.F. Who Is Vincent Mauri? How A Self-Coached Running Shoe Store Employee Ran 2:05 In His First Marathon

“No clocks on the course. I had average pace and current pace on my watch, nothing else. I popped into the finishing stadium and I thought the clock said 2:09. Then two seconds later I realized it said 2:05. I was like: what is going on today?”My guest for today's episode is Vincent Mauri. You're probably wondering: Who?! Well, we'll answer that question in the next hour.On Sunday morning in Toledo, Ohio, the 24-year-old biomedical engineering graduate and shoe store employee from Youngstown ran 2:05:53 in his marathon debut. He has no agent. No sponsor. There's no half marathon results on his resume. No coach. His last tracked competitive result was a 5K at the ACC Championships in 2025 where he got lapped by Ethan Strand and Gary Martin. And the race he ran on Sunday only existed because the one he originally signed up for got canceled three days out.Vinny trained himself, entirely, averaging 110 miles a week, two big sessions, a long Sunday run and a double threshold Tuesday, a lot of work on treadmills at Planet Fitness through a brutal Ohio winter and doing almost all of it in non-super shoes. He built his training philosophy from fragments of five different college coaches, leaned heavily on weight training and fueling discipline that had broken him in college. On race day, ran a race with no clocks, no pace group, no rabbit, and no idea he was running 2:05 until the finishing stadium clock told him so. Vinny walks through the entire arc from his time at Arizona State and Notre Dame, the coaching changes, the injuries, the post-college reset at the shoe store, the training block that nobody was watching, and the race itself. We also get into the immediate aftermath with people online trying to process this in real time, him reaching out to USADA himself and what he thinks he actually needs to take this from a stunning debut to a sustainable elite career.____________Host: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavezGuest: Vincent Mauri | @vinny.mauriProduced by: Jasmine Fehr | @jasminefehr____________SUPPORT OUR SPONSORSXENDURANCE: When you finish a hard workout, the work isn't actually done. We recap the DTF St. Louis season finale "No One's Normal. It Just Looks That Way from Across the Street" and agree it's strikingly bleak, debating whether the show was ever truly a mystery and whether the finale spends too long on last-minute suspects before revealing Floyd's death as suicide/self-neglect. We discuss how the ending impacts Carol, Clark, and their families, the show's underdeveloped female perspectives (especially Emmy), and moments that both humanize Carol and feel like plot devices. We also talk about how true-crime narratives can distort investigations, drawing on Sona's experience with wrongful-conviction compensation and law-enforcement tunnel vision. Finally, we share the loose real-world inspiration from the New Yorker article “My Dentist's Murder Trial,” involving a bizarre Planet Fitness meeting, a dental sedative, staging details, and unresolved coincidences. The wind in Oklahoma isn't background noise. It's a loud, invisible bully that yanks car doors, knocks you off balance, and somehow makes you question your entire personality. I'm outside trying to record in peace when a fisherman sets up nearby, and it spirals into a bigger thought about what people do for fun, what we pretend to understand, and why “self-sufficient” always seems to end with somebody asking, “You guys want Dominoes?” Then the real chaos hits: customer service culture. I walk into a Waffle House polite and hungry, and the vibe is instantly hostile like I just interrupted someone's personal break ritual. Getting told to “fuck off” as a running gag sounds funny until you're stuck in that awkward space where you can't clap back, you still tip, and you leave wondering why spending money feels like you're bothering people. It turns into a brutally honest rant about tipping culture, manners, and how exhausting it is to try to be normal in public. We also hit Planet Fitness for a snapshot of modern gym life: rules posted everywhere, zero enforcement, and an oil-covered dude making the equipment feel like a slip-and-slide. I try the hydro massage chair hoping for relief from sciatica and walk away realizing expensive gadgets can still deliver disappointment with perfect confidence. By the end, the jokes get quieter and the point gets sharper: people are going to be people, adult promises don't hold, plans fall through, and the only move left is choosing how I see it and how I breathe through it. If you like raw comedy, travel rants, Waffle House stories, gym absurdity, and real talk about anger and perspective, press play, subscribe, share it with a friend, and leave a review so more weirdos can find us.Support the showhttps://www.patreon.com/c/DiscombobulatedwithBobbyJaycox

Send us a text if you want to be on the Podcast & explain why!Picking a gym is not a vibe check, it's a career decision. We build a March Madness bracket of the best places to get hired as a personal trainer in the United States and tell you what the bracket is really measuring: income potential, quality of clients, coaching “reps,” interview standards, and how fast you can grow from new trainer to highly paid professional. If you've ever wondered why some trainers struggle to break past low session rates while others climb into premium training fast, the answer is often environment. We compare budget-friendly, high-volume gyms like Planet Fitness and LA Fitness with higher-end clubs where clients expect more and pay more. We talk real numbers on session pricing, why 30-minute training models (EOS, Anytime, and similar clubs) can sharpen your coaching quickly, and why improving brands like Crunch can be a strong stepping stone. Then we put the two giants head-to-head: Lifetime versus Equinox, including how scheduling and weekly hours can impact your first-month income and your ability to stay in the industry long enough to build a book of business. We also share a practical challenge: aim for the best gym you can realistically access in your market, especially in major fitness hubs, and surround yourself with strong trainers so your standards rise. If you're serious about turning fitness into a profession, hit play, share this with a trainer friend who's job hunting, and subscribe and leave a review so more coaches can find the path faster.Want to become a SUCCESSFUL personal trainer? The Power of Physical Checklists: Inspired by aviation, Atul Gawande's The Checklist Manifesto, and Daniel Kahneman's Noise, I've been experimenting with printed, physical checklists for repetitive tasks — from producing this show to running one-on-ones. The rigor of writing precise procedures carries over into clearer communication with both humans and AI agents. Small Interventions, Big Returns: A Brother P-Touch label maker. Reorganizing scattered hobby gear. 3D printing organizational tools with a new Bambu Labs P1S. None of these are revolutionary on their own, but the compounding effect of better organization — essentially building a fast index for your physical life — pays back over and over. Context Shapes Focus: Switching from a home gym to working out at Planet Fitness with my brother-in-law was one of the best focus interventions I've made. The change in environment eliminated the procrastination and context-blending that came from being steps away from my computer. If you're struggling with a habit, sometimes the environment is the variable to change, not your willpower. The Reading List: Good Strategy, Bad Strategy by Richard Rumelt (and its follow-up The Crux), The Art of Action by Stephen Bungay (a great framework for thinking about agentic workflows), How to Know a Person by David Brooks, and my top recommendation: 4,000 Weeks by Oliver Burkeman — a book that will help you stop looking for the productivity hack that fixes everything and start thinking about what actually matters. Learning as a Habit: Right now I'm learning to drive a stick shift on a 1983 Bronco. The point isn't the skill itself — it's staying in the beginner's seat. Intentional practice, setting small goals, refining through repetition. Keeping this habit alive is more important than ever when the industry demands rapid adaptation. How I'm Actually Using AI: Claude Code for one-shotting tools with clear boundaries, local environment improvements, and terminal troubleshooting. OpenClaw for experimental agents like a personalized trip planner and Home Assistant automations via YAML. Claude Co-Work for file system management and screenshot organization. Obsidian as the connective tissue — a markdown knowledge base that gives AI agents personal context to work with. And at work, spec-driven development is showing real promise for shaping agent output quality. A Framework for Thinking About AI's Role: I break AI use cases into categories: automating existing workflows (where most gains are today), operational restructuring (what happens when you free humans from a task), execution of complex technical work (agents on the front lines), iterative consulting on intent and goals, and the emerging frontier of exploratory connections and strategic synthesis. What You Should Actually Do: Be action-oriented — the cat is out of the bag. Invest heavily in planning and specification before sending agents off to work. But more importantly, invest in mindful change: understand your own values, figure out who you want to be when you look back on this moment in 10 years, and let that guide your decisions about adoption, learning, and career direction.

Guggenheim Analyst Simeon Siegel: Why Revenue Matters More Than Hype in Retail + 2026 Stock Picks

Retail earnings season just wrapped, and the headlines are telling one story while the data tells another. Consumer sentiment is dismal. Tariffs are squeezing margins. Geopolitical uncertainty looms. Yet average retail revenues grew 7-9% in Q4, and consumers keep spending. How do you reconcile these contradictions? Simeon Siegel, Senior Managing Director at Guggenheim Securities and one of Wall Street's most data-driven retail analysts, cuts through the noise with a simple philosophy: "The first thing I look at is revenues. Because it's very easy to conflate growth rates with revenue sizes."In this episode of The Retail Pilot, Ken sits down with Siegel to dissect what's really happening in retail beyond the sentiment surveys and macro doom-scrolling. From Nike's "dying" $47 billion business to Gap's viral comeback, from the D2C myth to why NPS scores should be banned from boardrooms, Siegel brings his signature contrarian analysis backed by hard numbers. This isn't about feelings—it's about what consumers are actually doing with their wallets, which stocks are positioned to win, and why the retail industry's most cherished beliefs might be leading CEOs astray. In this episode you'll learn:Why consumer spending remains strong despite abysmal consumer sentiment—and what that divergence really meansThe revenue vs. narrative disconnect: How Nike can be "dying" with $47-49 billion in salesWhich retail subsectors are winning and losing in the K-shaped economy (hint: it's a market share story, not a demographic one)Simeon's top stock picks for 2026: Why he's bullish on Nike, TJX, Ross, Birkenstock, Planet Fitness, and CapriThe real impact of tariffs on Q4 earnings: What retailers passed through vs. what they absorbedWhy Gap Inc.'s comeback under Richard Dickson is working—and whether it's sustainable beyond the hypeThe one KPI Simeon wants banned from retail boardrooms: Net Promoter Score (NPS) and why it misleads executivesWhy "D2C is not all it's cracked up to be": The data-driven case for wholesale distributionHow the Iran conflict could impact consumer spending, gas prices, and petroleum-based athleisure costsThe department store survival blueprint: What Macy's, Nordstrom, and off-price retailers are getting rightWhy TJ Maxx's lack of e-commerce is actually an asset for moving premium brand inventory "invisibly"Don't forget to subscribe to The Retail Pilot podcast for more conversations with retail industry leaders and visionaries shaping the future of commerce. If you missed our last episode, where Terry Lundgren (former Macy's CEO) and Jan Rogers Kniffen dissect the Saks Global bankruptcy, predict the future of department stores, and reveal why some retailers will survive while others won't, be sure to tune in.Connect with Ken:-Follow Ken Pilot Ventures on LinkedIn, Instagram, and YouTube.Hosted on Ausha.
