** PLEASE SUBSCRIBE ** Featured in WYGYFF Episode 11: Musician and host of the long-running "A Funk Above the Rest" radio show, Denver's Skip Reeves, a.k.a. "The Funktologist." Starting out as a drummer in the 1970s, he worked with artists like The Marvelettes, Mitch Ryder, The Platters, The Coasters, Buddy Miles, Alphonse Mouzon and The Drifters. In addition to providing a platform for popular and lesser-known funk & soul music, "A Funk Above the Rest" has featured interviews with Otis Williams of The Temptations, Teena Marie, Rare Earth's Peter Rivera, The Four Tops' Abdul “Duke” Fakir, Jeffrey Osborne, Emilio Castillo of Tower of Power, Jimmy Castor, Klymaxx's Cheryl Cooley, comedian Sinbad, ex-Michael Jackson guitarist Jennifer Batten and Mothers Finest. Reeves' distinguished career includes several other media projects, many of which continue today. RECORDED OCTOBER 2024 Hosted by Scott "DR GX" Goldfine — musicologist, author of “Everything Is on the One: The First Guide of Funk” and creator/host of the popular TRUTH IN RHYTHM podcast — "Where'd You Get Your Funk From?" is the latest interview show brought to you by FUNKNSTUFF.NET. Where'd You Get Your Funk From (WYGYFF) is an open format video and audio podcast focusing on the here and now, with a broad range of creative and artistic guests sharing fascinating stories, experiences, and perspectives. WYGYFF is a welcoming avenue to newer and independent musical acts as well as established and still active musicians of any genre; authors; filmmakers; actors; artists; collectors and archivists; radio & podcast personalities; journalists; scholars; sound techs; promoters; photographers; and other creative people. A common thread, is the show's standard opening question: Where'd you get your funk from? This is much deeper than it may seem as the answer need not be strictly about funky music, as not everyone has found the funk. It could hit on whatever type of music touches their soul or pleasure centers. Additionally, the question extends beyond music. Paraphrasing George Clinton, funk is whatever it needs to be to get you over the hump. Thus, guests can explain where they got their grit, perseverance, inspiration, talent, creativity, character or other qualities that shaped them into who they are today. This serves as a springboard into candid, in-depth and engrossing conversations. LEGAL NOTICE: All video and audio content protected by copyright. Cheryl started guitar lessons at the age of 11. She went onto learning music composition, orchestration & arranging at Crenshaw High School in Los Angeles, then onto earning a degree in commercial music at Los Angeles City College. While her then-brother-in-law, Hubert Laws was on tour with Latin Artist, Mongo Santamaria, she accidentally tuned her toy guitar to play a television theme song. When her sister heard it she suggested to their mother that Cheryl should take guitar lessons. From their Cheryl continued to broaden her studies in music classes all through out her school years. After graduating college, Cheryl was playing in various local bands. When she was rehearsing at a studio in Hollywood, she was approached by some girls that said they had been getting together an all-female band called KLYMAXX (AFB) and wanted her to come and start rehearsing with them. Cheryl was apprehensive about the musicianship level as to which they might have been, but agreed to come and rehearse and check it out, anyway. The energy and fun that the girls were having pulled Cheryl into continuing to develop the band and with that they appointed her to be the musical director. While working in a bank and rehearsing with the band, Cheryl was telling her supervisor about this all-female band called KLYMAXX she was in. Her supervisor, Linda Pate, told Cheryl that her uncle, Johnny Pate, was a producer for Artists like, Pebo Bryson and Minnie Riperton; and that if Cheryl would bring her the band's demo tape, she would give it to her uncle to see if he could help the band. When Johnny Pate listened to the music he was not impressed but happened to have lunch with an A&R executive named, Margret Nash who worked at Solar Records and he gave it to her. She loved the idea of an all-female band and the musical direction she could hear in KLYMAXX's demo tape. Margret took the tape and idea to Dick Griffey who was the president of Solar Records. He went to hear and see the band rehearse and signed the band immediately to a contract with Solar Records that would spawn 5 albums. Cheryl wrote the music to the demo song that got KLYMAXX the record deal and was the first single called, "NEVER UNDERESTIMATE THE POWER OF A WOMAN" #InternationalWomensDay #ExpertTalkWithTGo #ExpertTalkXtra #TalkShow #LivestreamInterviews #WomenFromAroundTheWorld #TheresaGoss #ExpertTalkFM #Roku #PodNationTV #talkshowtv #talkshowbisnis #talkshowonline #talkshowhost #talkshowexpert #talkshowguest #podcast #motivation #television #broadcast #listennow

The Benefit of Consistency with Cheryl Cooley “Don't feel ashamed of where you've been in life.” — Cheryl Cooley Will the constant pursuit of happiness lead to a meaningful life? If you are persistent, you will get it. If you are consistent, you will keep it. In this episode, we are joined by Cheryl Cooley to talk about the benefit of consistency. Part One of ‘The Benefit of Consistency with Cheryl Cooley’ Cheryl Cooley is an actress known for Klymaxx: The Men All Pause (1984), Klymaxx: Man Size Love (1986), and Klymaxx: I Miss You (1985). KLYMAXX, the all-female band (AFB) with the 80’s R&B/Pop musical hits, “Meeting In The Ladies Room”, “The Men All Pause”, and “I Miss You” Billboard magazine’s #3 song of 1986, as well as into the ‘90s with the #4 R&B hit, “Good Love” now performing with a new revealing experience of professional high energy, commanding funky rhythms and sensual melodic movements that is a musical journey you will never forget! “Be willing to follow your vision and stay persistent even if it feels like it isn't happening.” – Dianne A. Allen Cheryl’s parents always gave her a toy guitar every Christmas when she was a kid. At age eleven, she got involved in guitar lessons, which she felt comfortable about. She had a dream about being on stage playing an electric guitar, the lights were on, the entire audience was screaming, and she was getting ready to step to the microphone. But even if she already had it in her DNA to play the guitar, consistency played a huge factor in her success. There is a lot of misunderstanding from the average person about what it takes behind the scenes with consistent focus, effort and work to produce a three to four minutes song. There’s so much planning involved before getting up on stage and doing that one-hour show. The technical things, travel preparation, rehearsing consistently, contract signing, hotel accommodation, venue, sound system, lighting, safety, security, and many more! Most people only witness the climax part, but behind those are months of blood and sweat. The lesson here is, everything takes dedication, consistency, and perseverance no matter what your job is. Part Two of ‘The Benefit of Consistency with Cheryl Cooley’ As a woman, Cheryl shares that some women have family issues to deal with as they continue to strive for success. They usually have to deal with children, husbands or parents. Many times, those people will not be supporting because they have a fear that something might happen. Sometimes, someone will give negative remarks, “Maybe you should go home and be a housewife. Maybe you should pick a safe job. Why do you want to be up on stage and you got all these strange people running after you?” As a woman, she believes that we have another layer of obstacles that we have to get over. “Be a good steward of the resources that come. Don't blow it, thinking that it's an endless pipeline.” – Dianne A. Allen There was a time when she told their band manager, “I don’t want to do this anymore.” But she finds herself waking up the next morning feeling motivated and ready to face the challenges again. Her fans also motivated her to keep moving forward, especially when someone says how much her song or interview inspired them. Music is her life. She describes it as something that’s like a source of oxygen for her. Whatever it is that lights up your world more than anything else, hopefully, this episode will help you keep that magic of consistency that will take your dreams to greater heights! Klymaxx speak with Carl about the joys of being the first black female band with major pop success. Klymaxx is an American all-female pop/R&B band from Los Angeles, California. The band was composed of members Bernadette Cooper, Lorena Porter Shelby, Cheryl Cooley, Robbin Grider, Lynn Malsby and Joyce "Fenderella" Irby. Klymaxx was created and formed in 1979 by Bernadette Cooper (producer/drummer/vocals), the other original members included Lorena Porter Shelby (lead vocals), Cheryl Cooley (guitar), Robbin Grider (keyboards) and Lynn Malsby (keyboards). Joyce "Fenderella" Irby (bass/vocals/producer) joined the band later, before the recording of their debut album. The women involved developed their core sound in rehearsal, with Cooper providing "funky diva" vocals on faster songs, and Irby adding a "pop sensibility". Their debut album Never Underestimate the Power of a Woman was released in 1981, and their second album was Girls Will Be Girls. However their first album to achieve national recognition was the 1984 released Meeting in the Ladies Room, which the band self-composed and self-produced.

Honored Guest: Cheryl Cooley Klymaxx is an American all-female band created, formed, and then given their name by drummer, singer Bernadette Cooper. Klymaxx's uniqueness is due to the all-girl band's ability to play instruments, and their sound, influential mainly because of Cooper's comedic presence and their women-power themed music. Klymaxx's original members are (vocalist, drummer, founder) Bernadette Cooper, (vocalist) Lorena Porter (Shelby/Stewart), (guitarist) Cheryl Cooley, (keyboardist) Lynn Malsby, (keyboardist) Robbin Grider, (guitarist) Ann Williams, (percussionist) Judy Takeuchi and later after the band signed to Solar Records, (bassist/vocalist) Joyce Irby was added. In 1981, Klymaxx was signed to Solar Records by Dick Griffey. Griffey enlisted Lakeside member Otis Stokes, who brought in fellow member Stephen Shockley to produce the group's debut album which was entitled "Never Underestimate the Power of a Woman." The debut LP unfortunately produced no hits so they were back in the studio to record their second album, "Girls Will Be Girls." This album also contained songs produced and written by Stokes and Shockley, but also included songs written and produced by the newly formed production team of Jimmy "Jam" Harris and Terry Lewis of the Time. Klymaxx was one of the first acts to work with Jam & Lewis. The team wrote one song, "Wild Girls" and produced other songs for their second album. Klymaxx remains the only female self-contained R&B/pop band to achieve platinum status.

Cheryl started playing guitar at age 11 and went on to study her tushy off in school and in bands. Cheryl is one of the original co-founders of KLYMAXX an 80’s and 90’s funk band with hits like, Meeting in the Ladies Room” and “The Men all Pause”, and she has kept the band relevant for a long time, which is no easy feat in the world of music today. Took a left turn and became an electrician and a minister but never gave up on her path.
